getting to know michael

@MPSchmidtAg How did Michael Schmidt, president of Central Illinois Ag and fifth-generation owner, develop an understanding of the equipment business, learn public relations, and continue to successfully continue his family’s Case IH dealership? Since 1898, Central Illinois Ag has been on the forefront of customer service, reliability, and trust. Michael Schmidt, president of Central Illinois Ag, takes pride in honoring the men and women who have shaped him into the person he is today. “I always knew I wanted to be in the equipment business,” said Michael. From mowing roadsides in grade school, washing corn heads late at night in high school, and today being President of Central Illinois Ag, Michael has the dedication and work ethic that has brought him to this point where he is at now.

Ag was rebuilding its location in Atlanta, IL, Michael used Terry’s help with the new building. There were a lot of small details in college that Michael still carries throughout his life. “You learn how to deal with people,”. The work ethic, years of experience, and countless teachings passed down from generation to generation have been the foundation of Michael Schmidt, president of Central Illinois Ag. Hard work, determination, integrity, and loyalty are the reasons why Central Illinois Ag has been in business for 120 years, and still continues because of Michael and the direction he is leading the company.

During the summer wheat harvest of 1998, starting in Vernon, TX and ending in Great Bend, KS working as Contact Michael at mschmidt@centralilag.com the Pro Harvest Support, Michael pushed himself to fully develop his understanding of how pieces of equipment operate in the field constantly working. “We put motors in combines, pulled rotors, rotor gear boxes, and drives. Michael recalls anything you can imagine we did,” says Michael. From earlier on in life to the point where he is at right now, Michael Schmidt has been there. He has worked through problems and he knows what it will Photo (above): take to get the job done. Through guidance from his predecessors and also starting a new path on his own, Michael is fully aware of what an implement dealership requires to keep it up and running to its full potential while upholding the company’s well renowned recognition, honesty, and customer service. Michael pursued a well-rounded education in Ag Science at Western Illinois University from 1995 to 1998. He took classes such as agronomy, ag law, a trading class, and ag econ. Michael can still remember Dr. Gordon Roskamp saying, ‘Bacillus thuringiensis’, because Bt corn actually came out while he was attending Western. He also kept in contact with his former Ag Econ professor, Danny Terry, after graduating. While Central Illinois

echnology has been and always will be a vital instrument in agriculture. Throughout our lifetime, we will witness tremendous amount of growth and an astonishing amount of change. “We must be ready for changes in technology because it happens constantly,” says Chad Colby, general manager for Central Illinois Ag. That is why Chad has always been on the forefront of new and upcoming technology in agriculture worldwide. “It’s a huge struggle on every farm and knowing how to adapt to change can be difficult,” says Chad. Chad brings an exceptional amount of experience and willingness to teach others about the updates and adjustments necessary to build a well-organized business. “I like helping people and at the end of the day, Central Illinois Ag, for 120 years has helped people. Without the finely detailed instructions, they got the job done. He was determined to get job done no matter the circumstances. “That is what makes us different,” says Chad. Referring to those lessons learned while tearing apart motors and tractors. Figuring out how different intricate pieces come together and creating a solution is a thought process similarly applied to Central Illinois Ag. If anyone has a problem, we will help. If anyone is having trouble with equipment, we will help. If anyone is having issues with technology, we will help. Central Illinois Ag will keep its word and we will work to the best of our ability to accommodate to your needs. “We teach people, and we help people,” says Chad. The options that Geringhoff provides are “top notch,” especially when calculating the costs of production. Every minute counts. ith the increasing demand of high efficiency and 24/7 assistance, AgriSync strengthens the reliability between a dealership and its customers. During tireless planting and harvesting, wasting just half a day for a parts run could be detrimental to some farmers and their crops. On-the-spot video calls and up-to-date information on how to fix problems while being in the field will eliminate frustration and time waiting on nonguaranteed solutions.

Kyle Wright, assistant service manager in Clinton, uses AgriSync to communicate with customers to diagnose issues and potentially solve them before sending a tech to the field.

The capabilities of AgriSync for service mangers like Kyle Wright, assistant service manager in Clinton, IL, allows him to properly address problems before heading into the field. “It saves us [technicians] and the customer crucial time to video chat before sending out a technician to fix the problem,” says Kyle. When logging into the AgriSync App, farmers can create a digital ticket alerting designated advisors to diagnose what parts, tools, and/or codes are needed to fix the issue. “It’s nice knowing that all of our conversations [customer and technicians] are saved with each person,” points out Kyle. Therefore several technicians are able to continue in conversations with the customer, instead of beginning with an initial diagnosis. Everything is saved into one central location, ensuring maximum efficiency when problems arise. Kyle also mentions the convenient capability of sending out videos and/or messages to all customers before the busy seasons arrive. “All I have to do is make a video or message about how to set the combine or planter,” says Kyle. This saves the farmer time from calling his/her service technician about questions that could be easily answered in the video. As work becomes busy in the field, rely on the quick and easy communication from AgriSync. It will increase efficiency and drive profitability for you and your farm.

Dave Steward has the experience to know when something works, and sometimes trusting something new cannot always be the easiest. “…it was the best decision I made. the value of family farming “F

amily, to me, is everything!” says Tina Friend, knows today about the farming lifestyle. Learning each wife and mother of two, “it’s my privilege knowing and every step of the way, she knew that this is where what we’re doing is feeding people.” She is proud to raise she wanted to be in life and raise her children. her two girls on the farm and instill work ethic in them. “It’s very important for her to set the example No one is able to put into words the amount of time and effort it takes being a wife, mother, and a farmer, but to her daughters, not only how to work but Tina Friend embodies what a woman should be. Even though she was not raised on a farm, Tina exemplifies hard work, humility, and honesty to those around her. Her father, who worked in a coal mine, instilled those core values as a young girl, and now as a mother, she passes it on to her children. “There is always something to be done,” says Tina. Whether it be driving to a volleyball game, cooking dinner for the family, or operating the combine during harvest season, Tina takes care of it. She dove right into agriculture about 20 years ago when she met Scott, a farmer from Bath, IL, now her husband of 19 years. Scott’s family farm taught her what she

how to be a wife, how to be a mother, and how to be supportive of a husband. She sets the example for how a woman should be. That being in a farming family is more than just being wife and a mother. It’s being the best of all of it, and she sets the example pretty high.” -Scott friend

m 17 · Central Illinois Ag · www.centralilag.com

Tina first began running the auger cart with an 8670. “I was in hog heaven,” says Tina. Being able to spend time with her husband and work alongside with him is why she enjoys farming even more. “Decisions on the farm are made together. There isn’t anything that the two of us don’t run by one another,” says Scott. From determining what type and how much of herbicide to use on a crop, to making decisions on purchasing new equipment, this family operates as a team. “We work together well and that’s how we’ve always done it,” says Tina. She’s not afraid to pull a mower into the shop, service the engine, and put on new blades. The work does not frighten her; if there is something to be done, Tina has it under control. Tina prides herself in being a role model and setting the example to her children that even though mom might not have an office job, she still goes to work. She values a strong work ethic and takes pride in the things she has. “I’m a stickler for clean equipment, so I go out and make sure everything is looking good before we head down the field,” says Tina.

Properly maintaining and servicing equipment is something she also highly prioritizes on the farm. Tina says, “It’ll pay off in the long run when it still looks and runs as good as it did when you first got it.” That’s why Tina and her husband Scott trust Central Illinois Ag.

Photo: Tina, daughter Tayden, husband Scott, and daughter Tori Friend.

“When we need something they’re [John Coers] just a phone call away,” says Tina. “When we bought our new 2150 planter, Michael Schmidt himself came out with John [Coers] to set that planter and make sure everything was going to be right. I’ve never once had an owner come out to our farm; and that impressed me. That builds a relationship,” says Scott.

In farming, trust means everything. Building those relationships and learning from others that this job isn’t easy, but the values and lessons taught are priceless. “Be patient, learn as much as you can because it’s changing daily, and enjoy the ride!” Tina suggests to all of the woman eager to learn and ready to work. “I come from a coal mining family living in a little town. 30 years ago, I’d never thought I would be doing something like this, and now I can’t see myself doing anything else.”

In 1868, George McBride began farming in De Land, Illinois. After five generations of the McBrides, daughter Dorothy McBride married Don Hermann, father of Ken Hermann. For the next 66 years, the name Hermann Farms presided over the farm. In 2011, the Hermann and Hogan families formed a partnership and became, Frontier Farms. The newly-combined family farming operation kept its traditions as being on “the front edge of farming,” says Brett Hermann.

In 2012 Travis, with Brett as a partner, started his own aerial application business called Flying Illini Ag Service, LLC. He began spraying for Frontier Farms and later expanded the operation to include commercial application out of several locations. “We are always seeking opportunities,” says Brett. “Opportunities to grow, to learn, and to educate others about taking care of that which has been entrusted to us.”

Frontier Farms’ leadership now consists of Brett and Janelle Hermann, Travis and Melissa Hermann, and Ken and Chris Hermann. Travis and Melissa have four children: Naomi (6), Isaiah (4), Titus (2), and Silas (1). Brett, son of Ken and Chris, graduated from Greenville College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. Travis recalls the time when he was 8 years old, driving a 4020 and getting pulled over by a cop. “The cop wasn’t able to tell if there was anyone driving so he pulled me over and went straight to my dad (who was right behind him),” Travis remembers. Even at the age of 14, both Brett and Travis were running combines on the farm during harvest. The history and longevity of memories and stories to tell will last generations, and Frontier Farms will continue to operate with the highest level of integrity and transparency. They respect others and are always willing to lend a helping hand. With great success comes great responsibility, and Frontier Farms keeps their responsibility held high.

At Frontier Farms, Case IH equipment has been prevalent for several years now. For the past eight years, “We choose CASE because of the value when buying power and support. The entire line provides that long term for our overall operation,” says Brett. Frontier Farms takes pride in maintaining an up-todate inventory of equipment. They have continued for the past eight years because of the loyalty in Central Illinois Ag and Case IH. The partnership Frontier Farms experiences between sales, service, and financing has been the fuel behind the continuation in Case IH equipment. “Meeting the expected workload, unexpected repair, demands, and economic needs of Frontier Farms, Case IH has earned our loyalty,” Chris noted. There are several advantages when operating Case IH equipment, such as: ▶Designs are producer-driven to include features that enhance safety and comfort. ▶Power level choices accommodate multi-function needs in tractor units. ▶Consistency in design across models and units makes operator transitions smooth.

The reliability, durability, and cost efficiency in Case IH equipment outnumbers the competitors. Brett says, “We find our line of equipment to be quite reliable during peak demand seasons, with the support to keep us running no matter what it takes.” At Central Illinois Ag, “The service is high quality, parts and supplies are conveniently located, and they aim to accommodate their customers,” says Brett. Frontier Farms trusts the reliable, affordable, and durable machinery from Case IH, knowing that with Case IH equipment, they will continue their legacy of being earnest stewards of the land while feeding the world.

Case IH farmalls get the job done Y

ou can do just about anything,” says Dennis Wilham of Chestnut, IL. From pushing snow in the winter to taking down trees in the summer, the Farmall 45c gets the job done! “I don’t let it rest. I keep it very busy and it can handle the work,” says Dennis. With the four attachments ready to be hooked up to his 45c, the possibilities are endless. Dennis uses the L360A front loader, the BHA90 back loader, a Bush Hog single rotary cutter, and a fork lift for his projects. The 45 horsepower CVT Farmall insures that the operator has constant power at all times. With 9.7 gallons-per-minute hydraulic flow, the back loader is ready for heavy lifting. “I’ve been able to take tree stumps out that were close to 16” in diameter,” says Denis.

tractors, Dennis knew that a Farmall was going to get the job done. “John [Coers, salesman] sized this for me and my needs. He came out a couple of times exactly tailoring a piece of equipment for the job I’m doing,” says Dennis. The affordable and reliable Farmall 45c was the perfect fit for his needs, tackling projects that some compact tractors wouldn’t have been able to handle. “I knew that John would take care of me. He is a good ambassador for Central Illinois Ag. He knows his equipment,” says Dennis. Ranging from 45hp to 53hp, with or without a cab, the Farmall C CVT gets the job done quickly and quietly feeling less like work.

The Case IH BHA90 back loader digs out tough ruts, pushes down trees, and levels ground for a desirable finish. Easily navigating through cluttered terrane, the Farmall 45c “…is the perfect size for the job,” says Dennis. For the past several years, he has been cleaning out a tree line behind his house. “Years ago, you wouldn’t have been able to set foot back there, but today it looks like a park,” Dennis says. “It’s been a lot of work, but the 45c has done a really good job.” The reliability and comfort in a Farmall will make any job feasible. operating with low sidewall tires

R

ick Boyer, crop specialist for Ag-Land FS Inc., has been operating his Magnum MX 380 CVT with LSW Technology for the past two years. Since then, the greatest improvements he has seen on his farm has been because of LSW Technology. “It makes a world of a difference, planting wise. You don’t even know that you’re running tires. It just does an amazing job,” says Rick. During planting season, you may not know the exact location of a wet spot until it’s too late and the plants ability to emerge out of the soil could be eliminated. With LSW Technology, it does not leave behind a footprint like conventional tires. With a 20% decrease in sidewall and increase in wheel diameter, Rick has been able to operate his equipment under difficult conditions. Even with the smallest changes, the overall productivity and efficiency of an operation matters tremendously. Prior to the addition of LSW Technology on his farm, the standard dual tires would not properly handle power hopping and road lope issues.

the soil surface. Rick also uses his MX 380 CVT to pull the auger cart during harvest season. “I can run through a field to catch the combine and not worry about the tractor bouncing. It absorbs the vibrations,” says Rick. The wide surface area of the LSW tire decreases the amount of slippage while stabilizing equipment through the field. LSW tires have been made to be the affordable alternative to conventional tires with the same performance capabilities as tracks. “John [Coers, Salesman] takes care of us and he does a phenomenal job doing so,” says Rick. As technology and equipment continue to increase in stature; comparing conventional to sustainable practices, LSW Technology upholds comfort for the operator while optimizing performance in the field.

ith the ability of a tire to resist sinkage into the soil, and the capability to withstand a heavy load without leaving a rut disturbing the soil texture, the LSW Muck Master Radial tire is the ideal choice for you. It’s a concern to most in loose, wet, or easily compacted soils to have a proper tire attached to his/her equipment. The Muck Master Radial tire has a large section for floatation, low profile for stability, massive lug design for higher loads, and a lug concentration near center for excellent road ability. When operating with these tires, it maintains the soils air and waterfilled pore spaces to allow root growth, transport of plant nutrients, and rapid absorption of rain water. The Muck Master Radial tire does an incredible job with compaction due to its flat surface area and carries its overall weight well. The tire will carry any given load at the lowest required inflation pressure while providing with the greatest flotation and least amount of surface area of disturbance and compaction. The unique radial bar design will also help with road lope, allowing for comfortable travel in and out of the field. Equipment will continue to increase in stature, and every track made through a field could harm the overall health of the soil for years to come. With the Muck Master Radial tires, made by Goodyear, you will be setting up the soil fertility for years to come.

Iowa State studies show the majority of crop loss comes from the front of the head. Be sure your cornhead is working in optimum performance, making sure the parts are all lubricated and chains are greased before getting in the field this harvest. As you get your combine ready, make sure everything is in your favor. Spending time now will pay dividends in the busy season.

Autonomous agriculture really got started when Case IH released their concept in 2016. Equipment going across the field without anyone in the cab creates some questions and excitement. A company called DOT Technology Corp. They’ve developed a platform with power, RTK, and used with a remote control at the farm to drive and take implements on and off. More companies are looking to use this technology. Where will autonomy go next?

Transforming disbelief into necessity “I didn’t think I could ever justify to buying a Takeuchi TL12V2, but now we use it almost every single day,” says Brent West, cattle farmer and owner of West Sand & Trucking Company. Weighing the options when purchasing a new piece of equipment can be daunting: the price, the practicality, and the amount of work going to be put on the piece of equipment. That decision was made easy when Brent put to the Takeuchi TL12R2 to the test, “I was in disbelief that something like this could happen..the price was great and the customer service at Central Illinois Ag was outstanding,” says Brent. “Kip, service manager in Clinton, IL, is one genuine guy,” says Brent.

With the variability and power of a Takeuchi, it is able to turn a difficult task into a task completed with ease. “They are one fast machine,” says Brent. He commonly uses his TL12R2 to push manure and clear tree brush from fields within minutes. The speed of a Takeuchi turning an 8-hour job into a 4-hour job will save you time and money. This symbolizes the vast amount of detail, power, and organization Takeuchi is able to put into the machines. They are compact pieces of equipment, but “the visibility in a Takeuchi is great and it allows for me to work around difficult ground, especially because of the design of the door,” says Brent.

“I enjoy working on Takeuchi machines. They’re built to last. They’re big, they’re tough, they’re able to withstand a beating,” says Justin Hadler, Takeuchi Technician in farmer city. The design and weight distribution of a Takeuchi gives it an edge when comparing to a competitor. Built to last, and able to finish the job in a timely manner is the reason why so many customers keep on coming back. “I don’t see the issues on Takeuchi’s that I observe on other pieces of equipment,” says Justin. The constant speed and amount of dirt able to move, gives the customer the capability to trust his/her equipment. Time and time again, the ease and smoothness in machine operation, durability, visibility, resale and ability to deliver raw horse power into the tracks and buckets reiterates the value of a Takeuchi. Meanwhile wielding its power, the operator becomes fully concealed in safe effortless environment. The proof is in the machine and countless amount of customers who trust in Takeuchi. From excavators, track, wheel, and skid steer loaders, Takeuchi has perfected their product with lead design and operator efficiency.

Number of years at CIA: 4 Years Setting up combine software alone for the first time owner of CIA, Michael Schmidt, pulled up and spent time walking around the combine with the customer. It really helped me answer non-GPS questions that get asked around harvest time. I learned about AFS and Case IH equipment when working for a farmer and through a fertilizer company. I’ve had a lot of hands-on experience leading up to my role at CIA. The biggest priority is to get the problem fixed quickly so the customer has as little down time as possible. I am inspired by the daily advancements of technology. There are always new products and new ideas that make farming tasks more enjoyable and efficient. I share a birthday with my late great grandma and a younger cousin. Outside of the office you can find me racing sprint cars around the Midwest with a group of friends, or on the golf course.

It’s exciting to work in an environment where your customers are appreciative of your work. Seeing them happy when working after-hours to get them running creates a positive energy to continually want to help others no matter the time of day. I enjoy exploring different options that cause problems, then finding the solution in a timely manner. I learned how to work hard from my parents. My dad has owned a small business in Clinton, IL for over 33 years, and from that I’ve learned the value of work ethic as well as the value of your career and helping others.
