Tweed – Die-hard fans of the King of Rock and Roll flocked to the village of Tweed once again last weekend.

For the seventh year Tweed’s annual Elvis Festival proved to be a giant success, attracting guests from all over the world to experience the one-of-a-kind event in the town known for harbouring Elvis himself.

Lisa Lesage, the Executive Manager of the Tweed Tribute to Elvis Festival, said the allElvis weekend was a complete success, partly in thanks to some new additions.

“The weekend started out really great,” says Lesage.

“We started with a wine tour on Thursday afternoon, and then we went on to Addison’s Restaurant, then the Emporium off of Highway 7 for some retail therapy and lunch which everyone really enjoyed. This was new and our guests are asking for it to happen again.”

The festivities started Thursday night, where ETA’s – Elvis Tribute Artists – got to meet and greet with early comers to the festival at the Tweedsmuir. Friday afternoon opened up with the competition round, featuring both junior and senior competitors as well as non-professionals and professionals.

“We started with our competition rounds Saturday morning, after the parade,” says Lesage, who was thrilled to be driven down Tweeds main strip in a bright red convertible.

“Saturday’s rounds kicked off with both the junior youth and senior youth events, and then we went to our regular pros and non-pros.

They competed and that was an elimination round.”

Saturday night featured a performance from last year’s winner Oliver Steinhoff, an ETA all the way from Germany. The Tweedsmuir also played host to the King Idol competition, which was open to the public for anyone to

Lesage says that attendance was unmatched this year, and though the final numbers haven’t yet been calculated, the 2017 attendance was up.

“I know we have over 1,500 day passes sold on Saturday, and the total attendance of last year was around 2,500. I know we’re up this year, and I’m hoping for at least 2,700.”

Bruno Nesci, this year’s champion ETA, will be going on to Memphis to represent the Tweed Tribute to Elvis Festival at the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest in Memphis, Tennessee.

Marmora — The Marmora Fair Board is dealing with “unforeseen blow” to its plans for this weekend’s event as they learned Monday that COPE amusements has pulled out.

“The company COPE Amusements, who we had partnered with to bring in the midway rides and games, contacted the fair board today to advise they will not be continuing in business for the balance of 2017 as of today,” Margriet Kitchen, fair board director/secretary told the Central Hastings News Monday.

A call to COPE amusements located in Simcoe, was met with the phone message “mailbox full.” An email to COPE today asking why they cancelled their commitments was not met with any response as of Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile the Marmora Fair Board has jumped into action to save the fair.

“We just really hope that this message will get across the fast action taken by the fair board on such short notice, as well as the great history behind the fair, and what it means to the community,” said Kitchen.

The Marmora Fair celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1990 and the board is not giving up on this year’s fair and is surging forward with new plans to replace the amusement company’s rides and games.

“Running a fall fair for a community is a lot of work, and comes with a ton of challenges,” said Kitchen, remaining positive in the face of the news.

“Even though we are faced with this serious dilemma just one week before the fair we will not even contemplate cancellation of the fall fair, as with 127 years of history, we need to do everything we can to keep our great event going.

We cannot fail those who have worked so hard over the years, many of those whose children will now be visiting their favourite fair,” Kitchen said.

According to the Madoc and District Chamber of Commerce, the Madoc Fair Board expected to have an emergency meeting Monday to discuss how this might affect that event.

Celebration of Hope a new event to fundraise to fight cancer

Campbellford — Organizers of the Relay for Life event are moving toward a new event celebrating cancer survivors — Celebration of Hope. The event will support the Canadian Cancer Society. “Events such as Relay for Life usually have a few years lifespan and we, as a committee, felt that we had reached the end of ours at this time,� said Mary McTaggart, one of the committee volunteers. “The direction of Relay changed a few years ago and while we had always had a strong focus on our survivors in Trent Hills, we weren’t able to individualize our Relay any longer. We wanted to create an event that would take us back to celebrating our survivors, and that is what we have done,� she explained.

This celebration will be held Sept. 8 from 6-9 p.m., rain or shine, on Trent Drive in Campbellford, on the field by

Each member of the committee has been part of Relay, most since its inception. They have put in hours and hours of hard work, dedicated days of preparation and planning and are the reason why it has been such a success.

This year’s event will feature a cancer survivor, not once but twice. Maureen Dikun will give a brief talk. She will answer questions anyone might have as well.

People are asked to bring their own lawn chairs to the event. There will be a fundraising barbecue (proceeds to Cancer society, tax receipts available), live music, luminaries, and a small ceremony to honour all those who have battled cancer. The event will wrap up with a candlelight walk by the canal for those who are interested and able.

People can reach the committee for a pledge sheet through their Celebration of Hope Facebook page or by contacting the Canadian Cancer Society, Peterborough Chapter at 705-742-3823.

Luminaries will be for sale and pledge sheets will be available at Forgrave Financial Services and Bennett’s Home Furnishings.

Donations will be accepted that night.

Norwood — Norwood was in the national spotlight on Aug. 22, taking a star turn in the popular CBC show Still Standing.

The Friendly Township was the featured community in comedian Jonny Harris’s acclaimed series, with a strong shout-out to Norwood District High School and visits to unique attractions like the Indian River Reptile Zoo, where the Pouch Cove, N.L., native fed animals; and Entomo Farms, where he chowed down on proteinrich crickets.

Harris grew up in a small town and has an empathetic heart for the struggles these communities face. It is, as he says, “Canada against the ropes, but still hanging in there.�

Filmed last summer during a weeklong visit, the Norwood episode aired nationally on Tuesday night; but, it also had a special public viewing at the Norwood Town Hall, where applause and laughter ruled.

It was a happy crowd, much like the one that filled the hall last September for Harris’s standup comedy show. “When you see something like that, you want to rush home and tell your friends,� said Doug Barrett. “It’s very inspiring and you feel pride in your town.�

“It was great,� added Vicky King, who guided Harris around town and talked to him about the Norwood Millpond and Norwood District High — which she fears losing because of declining enrolment. “He was funny and very personable,� King said. “He had a lot of interest in Norwood and asked me a lot of questions. He was really interested in the town and how we got along, and in the potential of Norwood High closing. So, he took a real interest in that and seemed saddened by that. He knew what would happen if it closed. “(The episode) fully encompassed what Norwood was all about. I’m glad now that we’re a little bit further out of the woods in keeping our high school. A lot has changed over the last year. I hope everybody watched and learned a little bit about Norwood.�

Fire Chief Darryl Payne also got some screen time taking Harris to the Eastern Ontario Fire Academy, where the TV star helped put out a vehicle fire. “He cares about these small towns.

He genuinely wants to help these places out,� said Payne. “He’s a small town guy and he recognizes issues. It was a great thing. He’s bringing exposure, and I think, in the future, it’s going to help us out.�

Afghanistan: An endless war In 2010, Barack Obama’s vice-president, Joe Biden, vowed that the United States would be “totally out” of Afghanistan “come hell or high water, by 2014.” In 2014 Obama said that he would leave about 8,000 US there after all, Gwynne Dyer troops and made an agreement with the new Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, that extended their stay “until the end of 2024 and beyond.”

Donald Trump wasn’t having any of that.

Back in 2013 he tweeted “Our troops are being killed by the Afghanis we train and we waste billions there. Nonsense! Rebuild the USA.” But it looks like the generals have now got to him with what passes for military wisdom.

On Monday Trump announced that he would be sending more US troops to Afghanistan – probably around 4,000 – and that they would stay as long as necessary. He has a clever new strategy, too: “We are not nation building again. We are killing terrorists.” (I bet George W. Bush and Barack Obama wish they had thought of that.)

There is a strong temptation at this point to haul out the hoary old line: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Trump is, indeed, proposing to do the same old things again, ostensibly in the hope of achieving different results.

Peak US troop strength in Afghanistan was 100,000 in 2010-11. If that did not deliver victory then, how likely is it that boosting US troop numbers from 8,500 to 12,500 will do it now?

Neither the Soviet Union nor the British empire at the height of its power were able to overcome Afghan resistance to a foreign military presence, and we now have sixteen years of evidence that the United States cannot do it either.

Both the British and the Russians were able to maintain a military presence in the country as long as they were willing to take the casualties that involved, but in neither case did the regimes they installed long survive their departure. Whatever their merits, those regimes were fatally tainted by their foreign sponsorship.

The United States now finds itself in precisely the same situation. Ashraf Ghani’s government is certainly not the worst that Afghanistan has had to endure, but it lacks

legitimacy in the eyes of Afghan nationalists because it depends on foreign troops and foreign money.

Since those foreign troops dwindled from 140,000 in 2011 (including non-American troops from a dozen other Western countries) to only 13,400 now, the Afghan government has lost control of about 40 percent of the country. And the process is accelerating: onethird of that territory was lost in just the past year.

So what would happen if the foreign troops all left and the Taliban became the government again, as they were in 1996-2001? Would the country become a breeding ground for terrorism? Would more plots like the 9/11 attacks be hatched there? Probably not.

The Taliban are essentially a nationalist group. Their extremely conservative take on Islam was not seen as a problem by Washington when they were fighting the Russians, and most rural Afghan males do not see it as a problem now. (Nobody asks the women.)

Most urban, educated Afghans are terrified of the Taliban’s return, of course, but they are a small fraction of the population. And many foreigners see the Taliban as the least bad alternative to the US-backed regime. As Zamir Kabulov, the Russian special envoy to Afghanistan, said in early 2016: “Taliban interests objectively coincide with ours.”

What he meant was that the Taliban aren’t interested in foreign affairs at all. They do not dream of a world Islamic empire; they just want to run Afghanistan. Indeed, they are the main military rivals to the jihadis of Islamic State and al-Qaeda who are currently trying to establish a foothold in the country – and by and large they are winning those little private wars.

But what about 9/11? There is good reason to suspect that Osama bin Laden and his mostly Arab companions of al-Qaeda, then guests of the Taliban, did not warn their hosts before they carried out that atrocity, since it would clearly lead to a US invasion and the overthrow of the Taliban regime.

Obviously, few of these considerations will have occurred to Donald Trump, but does that mean he really thinks he can win in Afghanistan? Not necessarily.

Maybe, like Obama, Trump has simply decided that he doesn’t want the inevitable collapse of the Western-backed regime in Afghanistan to happen on his watch. He’s just committing enough American troops to the country to kick it down the road a bit.

Editorial by Chris Malette They’re in most small towns and cities. Ostensibly, they’re a venue for homegrown, homemade goodness – beets from the farm field, local sweet corn, tomatoes when in season, jams, jellies, flowers and more.

Farmers markets and farmer’s roadside stands are all about the goodness of the earth, right here in our own backyards, aren’t they?

Well, not always.

You see, some market vendors make a weekly, sometimes twice-weekly or more trek to the sprawling Ontario Food Terminals in Toronto where several hundred large-scale produce vendors sell to neighbourhood green grocers, some small supermarket chains, restaurants, caterers and, yes, market vendors who then re-sell their produce as their own.

Oh, if you ask, the honest ones will tell you they purchased such and such out of local season, but in cases where some market and roadside vendors make their living off the volume of their produce sales, many more will just as soon tell you those sparkling red peppers you’re buying in early July surely did come from their own fields, picked by their own hands.

It’s created animosity and accusations that are not just bubbling in places like Peterbrough’s historic market, it’s downright boiled over there.

Romeyn Stevenson, owner of Ashburnham Farms near Peterborough, has been standing up to the farmers’ market board in Peterborough, according to the Metroland MyKawartha. He’s been selling his locally-raised beef and vegetables at the market for almost eight years.

He is a member of a group of vendors who have hired a lawyer to represent them. They have banded together to reform the management and governance practices of the Peterborough District Farmers’ Market Association. Stevenson says the market needs to foster small farmers by limiting the number of booths given to larger vendors – many of which are suspected of reselling produce purchased at the Food Terminal – and craft vendors. Stevenson says this could encourage more people to farm if they have a place to sell their produce.

“In a perfect world (the market) should be operating within a 50-mile radius with farmers first and then others from outside,” says Stevenson.

In Belleville, most who have had market stalls for many years know who’s buying and re-selling too much produce from the Terminal as their own, but no one raises much of a fuss. There are the traditional, habitual offenders but the honest vendors are only too willing to boast about where, how and when they’ve grown their produce.

More should emulate their honesty.

Formally, Belleville Farmers Market was established in 1816.

In the market handbook, the “guidelines/rules and regulations stipulate: “The market will sell and promote local farm produce and food products for the benefit of the Belleville community, local farmers and businesses… offering seasonal, fresh, locally grown produce in a manner that supports and increases traffic for the Belleville Downtown businesses. The Belleville Farmers’ Market will be an important ecologically sound social and cultural addition to Belleville; a place for the local community to purchase locally produced products and to establish direct connections with the surrounding farming community.” (Italics are editor’s) And: “To create a place where local farmers can sell their produce and food products at prices which reflect the costs of production and a fair return for their efforts.” We assume that doesn’t mean loading the cube van with produce at the Ontario Food Terminal and building the cost of gas and a little bump for pure profit into the mix from a vendor who’s selling Leamington hot house tomatoes to you in June.

Market rules get murky, then, when the selection process for vendors includes the following rule: “The Belleville Farmers’ Market is producer-based; therefore, applicants selling goods which they have produced themselves will have priority. A producer may sell additional produce grown by a relative, a neighbour farmer or an approved association or farm. Absolutely no peddlers will be allowed in the Market.”

Sure, there’s a little wiggle room, but do all vendors on the market adhere to the policy that says: “At a MINIMUM, 65 % of all produce/ product sold is to be grown/made by the vendor and 100% is to be grown/produced in Ontario.”

In no way is this whole lesson intended to sully any of the mostly honest vendors out there.

But, sketchy practices have been around for long enough and consumers deserve to know better about where their produce is grown.

Do us all a favour, then, if you own a market stall wherever you set up, be it in a town or village market, on the roadside or on a street corner – be straight up with where that produce comes from. If it’s all from your farm, or that of your uncle or neighbour, proudly post that where all can see it.

Otherwise, if we’re eating peaches in June, we sure as heck expect to see or be told where they come from.

Farm 911, The Emily Project, launched to help save lives

Quinte West — In an effort to improve emergency services throughout rural communities with additional 911 signage on rural properties, Farm 911 The Emily Project has launched.

Farm 911 committee members launched the project during a special ceremony at the Hastings County Plowing Match and Farm Show on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

The project is named in honour of Emily Trudeau, who died at the age of seven in a farm accident in Tweed on Aug. 29, 2014.

Mark Slack, committee member and friend of the Trudeau family, spoke about the difficulties first responders can face when trying to locate farm accidents in remote locations, including Emily’s, which happened on a remote farm property away from the home farm.

“The entrance wasn’t marked with the 911 number, so when the accident happened, they called in the accident to emergency services, but there was no

way for them to relay where the entrance was, so the emergency services vehicles drove past the entrance of the farm and they had to be flagged down,” he said.

“It took longer than it should have.”

Slack said Farm 911 The Emily Project came about after Emily’s parents Scott and Angela Trudeau approached him about one year ago and said they thought 911 signs needed to be at all farm entrances.

With the application process to have 911 signs already in place in municipalities, Slack said the committee is advocating for rural landowners to apply for signage for all entrances to farm or recreational properties, hunting camps, sugar bushes, entrances to four-wheeler trails and wood lots.

“If it’s a 911 sign on a municipal road, it gives a starting point, even if an accident happens further into the property, at least this gives starting point for the emergency services to be at, minutes count in this sort of world,” he said.

day of the project was very emotional and overwhelming but a happy day too.

“It seems like yesterday it just happened,” he said. “It’s amazing really because I think it’s a great tribute to Emily, to help other people. It’s a good way to keep her name going and what wasn’t available at the time for her may be available now.”

The need for additional signage is clearly there, said Trudeau, along with the support for the project.

“Farming is one of the most dangerous jobs to begin with, and then not having the tools to keep you safe when you’re already doing an unsafe job, it is silly in a way and it’s definitely just going to catch on, people are going to want it and realize that they need it,” he said.

Belleville fire Chief Mark MacDonald spoke during the project launch and described the current dispatch system and how heavily first responders rely upon an address and very good information to get to the scene as soon as possible.

“Unfortunately, in the emergency services, it takes a tragedy for us to realize there’s a gap, there’s a gap we need to fill, and that’s what The Emily Project identified, was the next gap in 911” he said.

“This is going to be a game changer for the first responders because, as Mark said, there’s nothing more helpless a responder feels, that they’re driving around, they know there’s an emergency somewhere, but they can’t find it.”

MacDonald said he thinks the project is really going to help reduce wait times and makes a great difference.

Hastings — Lennox and Addington MP Mike Bossio and Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis spoke during the event, relaying their support for the project.

Bossio said he couldn’t say enough about the Trudeau family, commending Scott and Angela and the family for their strength and commitment to bringing about a positive change from a tragedy.

“Out of that, submissions have gone into the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes to adapt this into some kind of policy, a national policy that can then be utilized by other jurisdictions to create a policy that will exist across all government jurisdictions across the country,” he said.

Bossio said he was unsure if the commission was going to adapt it, but he’s hopefully and will continue to lobby on behalf of the project.

“Let’s face it, at the end of the day, what value do we put on a life?” he said.

Marmora and Lake Fire Department’s open house was the hot spot

Marmora — The Marmora and Lake Fire Department was the hot spot to be on the weekend when the firefighters hosted their annual open house.

“We try to do this every year. It’s to educate the people about what we do ... a chance to bring the kids out so they see who is on their fire department and get knowledge of what all the equipment does," said Deputy fire Chief Bob Murphy, who has been a firefighter with the volunteer department for the past 40 years.

The fundraising event featured Sparky the safety dog who greeted visitors and made friends with the youngsters. Hotdogs, burgers and fries were served up by the firefighters throughout the daylong event on Saturday, Aug. 26 which featured demonstrations, games and more.

Amber Brownson was there offering face painting for the kids.

A ladder truck on loan from the Trent Hills Fire Department was a popular attraction for kids, moms and dads who were able to get a ride in the bucket for free.

Jerry May, a volunteer firefighter with the department for the past two years talked about the truck noting the ladder can go 98 feet into the air for the taller buildings in case of fire.

Wendy Bateman and her son Daniel, four-years-old, were among those who took a ride in the bucket.

“Today is about people seeing what we do and it’s great public relations,” said May as he helped Daniel on board. “And it’s about seeing that smile he has on his face right there.”

Noah Robertson, an auxiliary cadet in training was operating the ladder truck.

Mike Parisi of Toronto who was visiting with his wife Shanya and their two children, Alyssa, two-and-a-half and son Nathan, five, said he liked the idea of an open house. “It’s good to know about fire safety,” he said to his five-year-old son Nathan.

Chad Reid, a volunteer firefighter for the past five years, provided tours of the department’s fire house set up as an educational tool.

A table was set up with fire safety literature as well.

Hastings — After a lot of travel and years of pooling ideas, patient planning has paid off for Crovalley Holsteins near Hastings which has unveiled its new $2.5 million, six-row free-stall barn and robotic milking system.

The barn also features calving pens and a special area for awardwinning show and classifying cows along with two Lely robots for milking, with room for a third when they increase the number of cows for milking. They currently milk 110 cows with around 300 animals in total on the fifth generation farm belonging to the Crowley family – John and Cynthia and their children Christina,

“We can tie them off and show them off for classifieds or tours,” says Justin. “We get a lot of tours in to see our genetics.”

Crovalley recently hosted a group from Ireland.

“The cows are more comfortable and freer moving and they can choose when to get milked as opposed to us going to them,” Justin says. “It took three or four people to do chores in a tie stall barn, now it takes one person in the morning.”

The robots may be there but there’s still “a lot of hands on as well,” he stresses. “You still have to be here.”

But, he admits, “there are more and more ways to help farmers get a job done in a day.”

“It’s life changing,” his dad John adds.

“There’s no more milking at 5 a.m. They milk themselves. I’m amazed at how these robots keep milking the cows the way they do.”

With the new barn and system he says they could be milking between 175-180 cows in 10 years.

“Farmers milking 50-100 cows can’t expand because tie stall barns are so determined. You can’t milk extra cows.”

Hastings — The Elizabeth Gardens apartment project is taking shape in Hastings.

The two six-plex units on Elizabeth Street are expected to be finished and ready for occupancy in February and March of 2018 and represent a dream come true for owner-developers John and Jennifer Little of Hastings.

“We’re excited. This is a big project for us,” says Little. “We’ve built several houses for our own use but this is the biggest project we’ve taken on.”

The Littles bought the first lot in 2012 and then acquired the adjacent lot.

“We started laying plans for it back then,” says John, the vice president of engineered wood products for Taiga Building Products. “I’ve always wanted to build an apartment building. I’ve designed and supplied a lot of apartment buildings throughout Canada and I’ve always wanted to build one myself.”

He and his wife started working on plans about two years ago “having contests at the kitchen table with drawings (and) trying to get the best configuration we could for the space allotted.

We’ve been planning very seriously for about two years.”

Last summer, they started working with an architect to “bring our plans to something more professional”.

The properties received rezon-

ing approval from Trent Hills last fall. Dalren Contracting of Cobourg is overseeing the project.

The two buildings — the Rose and the Lilac — are 6,392 square feet each, with three units upstairs and three downstairs.

They are “rather unique”, says John. “Rather than have a centre hall, we have private entrances for each unit.”

“You’re not going into a common area. Everybody has their own door. They come in privately,” adds Jennifer.

The buildings are the “reverse of each other” and everyone has their own balcony or patio.

“We thought of how we would like to live if we lived in it,” said John.

All the units are about 1,000 square feet and have two bedrooms with a large kitchen opening into a family room. Each has their own laundry room, furnace, and air-conditioning — six appliances in all.

They’d be called “stacked townhouses” if they weren’t being rented as apartments.

“The demand was there when people learned it had been rezoned successfully," says John.

"That’s when we started getting people coming and applying. Everybody’s been optimistic for this building when we started planning it. The first thing they said to us is 'this is very needed in this area.'”

Hills and Lines the theme of artist’s Dancing shoes and cleats welcome at CD release party new exhibit at Ah! Centre

Warkworth — A move to Keene and a home in the hills are two things that inspired local artist Jane LowBeer.

Her newest exhibit Hills and Lines opens Sept. 1 at the Ah! Arts and Heritage Centre.

According to the press release LowBeer “began to notice the concept of line in the country landscape, straight, curved and diagonal,” created by the formation of trees defining the fields, well kept lines of corn and other crops and lines of bushes, branches and hills.

“In land lines I reflect on the horizon seen in the rural landscape, the rolling hills, forests and fields of southern Ontario,” she wrote.

For her the first impression of these collages “may suggest floating islands, strange creatures or sea-less ships.”

In the making they consist of overlapped monoprints sewn and cut out in eccentric horizontal forms.

“These forms are caught and skewered on the wall like taxidermied trophy fish.”

But a closer look reveals something else, what she calls sanctuary, places of peace, “wellsprings of lyric, dreams and poems.”

For LowBeer the grass, trees, fence lines, pastures and hedge rows reveal the land as layers of lines constantly shifting with wind and light.

Her work is primarily drawing. She focuses on line as the medium for expression although the pieces are multimedia.

Her works use the traditional technology of dry point on semi-transparent Japanese paper.

LowBeer creates mantles of lines from numerous printings, textured renderings that are glued and sewn to slowly build into their finished shapes.

The exhibition begins Friday, Sept. 1 and continues until Oct. 8. The opening reception is Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. at the centre.

Warkworth — The John Cleats Band CD release party invites everyone to bring their dancing shoes or cleats to celebrate and raise money for Ah! Arts and Heritage Centre.

“The music is about identity, gender and LGBTQ issues,” said singer-songwriter Dimitri Papatheodorou.

Orlando, the first track on the album, is about the 2016 massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

The John Cleats Band members include Papatheodorou, Stephen Rapos, Ron Masil, Jonah Allen-McLean, Olivia Rapos and Ruth Shaw; all music personalities the village knows well.

The album was recorded at Wheatland Records and mixed and mastered by Stephen Rapos at Crooked House Studios in Warkworth.

Wheatland Records is named after the historic stone farmhouse in Warkworth, Wheatland Farm.

“Jamie and I moved here four years ago. The house has a small performance space that seats about 45 people,” Papatheodorou explained.

The band had its debut performance at Karfest in June in Warkworth.

The name of the band is a play on the Monty Python actor John Cleese, and the album cover depicts a pair of rugby cleats covered in jewels, representing gender and orientation fluidity and ambiguity.

Knights, fairies, dragons at Hastings Medieval Festival

Hastings – There will be swashbuckling knights, dragons and fairies at the second annual Hastings Medieval Festival Sept. 2-3 at the Hastings soccer fields.

Hosted by local the Hastings-based medieval re-enactment troupe Blades of Glory, The Brotherhood of the Sword will bring together seven well-established sword fighting groups as well as the Mary McGillis Fairy and Dragon Festival.

The second annual Hastings Medieval Festival will be held at the Fowlds Millennium Park soccer fields Sept. 2-3.

The event will give visitors a close-up look at the evolution of sword fighting from ancient days until now. The Peterborough Fencing Club will be on hand to demonstrate the modern approach to sword fighting.

This is the ensemble’s second Hastings festival and organizers say it will be “much bigger” than last year’s event at the Hastings ball park.

The popular Fairy and Dragon Festival, staged last year in Lakefield, will take place Hastings Sunday, Sept. 3.

Events will run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days.

Among the sword groups coming to Hastings are Linnagond (Peterborough Amtgard) a Live Action Role Play (LARP) group; Canton of Petrea Thule of Peterborough, a Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) group; the Peterborough Fencing Club; Kingston’s Ironwood Sword School, an Historic European Martial Arts group (HEMA); Ottawa Swordplay, another HEMA group; the Viking re-enactment group Wulfthorpe from Waterloo and The Blades of Glory knights following the Medieval Armoured Combat Entertainment (MACE) style.

The festival will include, among other things, live music, plays, axe throwing, archery, food, interactive stations and face painting.

The Fairy and Dragon festival will include princess parties, dance and conga lines and Sparky the Dragon throughout the day. There will also be a Blades of Glory Sword challenge using foam swords, face painting with Razberry the Clown, balloon sword demonstrations and entertainment by singer Robin Hawkins.

Support for long-term care home

Havelock — Havelock-Belmont-Methuen’s (HBM’s) protracted campaign to bring a 128-bed long-term care home to the municipality was recently given a shot in the arm with endorsements from three neighbouring municipalities.

Asphodel-Norwood joins North Kawartha and Douro-Dummer in agreeing to send support letters to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, lauding the initiative HBM has been stickhandling since 2011, when it officially applied to the ministry.

Six years ago, there were 950 people on a waiting list for long-term care in Peterborough County-City; that number has grown to close to 3,000. As of January 2016, there were 1,058 licensed LTC beds in the city and county.

“Some people play the lottery. (We play) the ‘who’s on the long-term care wait list,’” HBM Mayor Ron Gerow said in a presentation to Asphodel-Norwood council.

The township owns an 18-acre zoned and serviced property south of the village, and has earmarked five acres for the longterm care home. They’re already working with Peterborough Housing on a 32-unit assisted living project at the site, which could accommodate a variety of seniorsrelated building initiatives.

“Our model revolves around a rural structure that differentiates us from some others,” says Gerow.

The Havelock facility would serve eastern Peterborough County, the northern Northumberland and eastern Hastings County, he added.

He also noted this area has one of the oldest populations in Canada, with over 35,000 people aged 55 and older living in the six municipalities alone. There are 975 people over 85, which is the average age of long-term care residents.

This “solidifies” the argument about the aging demographic, Gerow said.

“It’s a snapshot of the existing situation in this region. It’s indicative of what we’ve been saying all along that we have a very aging population.”

Gerow and HBM staff have met with Health Minister Chris Hoskins and are working closely with his staff. Petitions and a bus lobby to Queen’s Park have raised the campaign’s profile.

They had another conversation at the recent AMO conference in Ottawa.

“We think we’re getting pretty close to some resolution.”

COUNTY UNVEILS CONCEPT DRAWINGS FOR NEW GPL The vision for the new Golden Plough Lodge (GPL) long term care home was unveiled at the August meeting of County Council, as staff and consultants shared concept drawings for the replacement home, to be built by 2025. Council directed staff to move forward with hiring architect and project management services for the official design and build, which is anticipated to cost just over $40 million. “While this represents a concept only at this point, it is wonderful to see the new facility taking shape,” stated Warden Mark Walas. “This new home will meet best practices in long term care, and create an environment where our residents can continue to live with purpose, choice, dignity and respect.”

Ron Denyes a Mission to Guatemala planned by pastor of Volunteer of the Year Marmora Pentecostal Church

Marmora — A mission to Guatemala to help schoolchildren and moms in hospital is the focus for Pastor Alvin Peddle and his wife Glenda of Marmora Pentecostal Church.

Their trip is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 6 to Oct. 16.

They are taking quilts and school kits for schoolchildren there.

They will be joined by church member Deborah Pedersen and a member of Madoc Pentecostal Church, Marie Rooney.

“We each will be paying our own way and we’ll be joining Hector and Ruth Aragon, missionaries there,” said Pastor Peddle.

The church in Marmora has been supporting the Aragons in missions for more than 15 years.

“This is a program sponsored by the Pentecostal Assembly of Canada. We’re just one church in a series of churches that support them,” he explained.

“It started when Hector came and talked to us about how babies are delivered and sent home wrapped in newspapers. Our ladies at the church took that to heart and have been making quilts for babies ever since. They have done thousands,” said Pastor Peddle.

“Our church is doing it but people outside the church are helping as well. Last year, we sent 300 quilts to Guatemala.”

During their mission to Guatemala, the foursome plan on visiting hospitals and will be presenting the quilts to the mothers.

“It’s all very interesting. In hospitals in Guatemala, not even dads are allowed in while mothers are in hospital. No family is allowed.

The only person the moms will see is the missionary that gives them the quilts. It’s a special

The Aragons have been actively involved in Evangelism and administration for ChildCARE Plus since January 1997. There are 300 children in the program and the program is run in schools in several villages.

“We have been asking people to buy kits with

pencils, pens, an eraser, sharpener etc. at $5 per kit. We set a goal of 500,” said Pastor Peddle.

The children at the Marmora church’s vacation bible school (BVS) had raised about $450 at the time of the interview by purchasing kits.

Stirling—On Canada Day, the Township of Stirling-Rawdon honoured three of its Volunteers of the Year — but a fourth person was absent.

Council caught up with the missing honouree on Monday, Aug. 21, presenting Ron Denyes with his award at the start of the evening’s council meeting.

“I’ve known Ron for probably 40 years,” Mayor Rodney Cooney said, noting that Denyes was his baseball coach when he was a young teenager.

He said Denyes spent many years as a schoolteacher, principal and school superintendent, and was involved in the curling club, his church, the agricultural society and many other activities.

Denyes is currently working to come up with a solution to the lack of affordable senior housing in Stirling. But his love was, and is, dairy goats.

“He was always into the dairy goats,” Cooney said, adding that Denyes has judged goats in Canada and the USA for many years.

This year, Denyes has been named a judge at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, an honour Cooney compared to winning the Stanley Cup. “I thank you for helping to make our community what it is today,” the mayor said as he presented Denyes with a certificate from the Township and another from the province.

Denyes thanked all those involved in honouring him, and also had a message for everyone.

“I just want to throw a challenge to you,” he said. “There are a lot of young people in this community as well, and I know you look for chances to recognize them, but I want to pass along a comment that someone who worked with me years ago said. I like to look around and try to catch somebody doing (something) extremely well...and let them know. I just want to pass that along.

In this community, there are some young people that are going to replace us down the way, and we need to be encouraging them.

So, I toss that to you as a challenge that you can pick up. As community leaders, everybody looks up to you.”

He added that people don’t realize how much volunteer time is put in by elected officials, and he thanked the members of council for everything that they do for the community.

Celebrating history at miner’s day

Marmora — Panning for gold and kinetic sand made for a fun-filled miner's day thanks to an event hosted by the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance in partnership with Marmora tourism.

It was a Canada 150 event in celebration of the “Mines and Trans Canada Trail History,” and it was held Saturday, Aug. 26, at Marmora’s Memorial Park.

A bright yellow mining helmet with a miner’s light and a kit were all that the children needed to enjoy digging for gold and gems as parents gathered to watch.

Seven-year-old Cameron Wright thought it was an excellent adventure because, “I like to go for rocks.”

His grandmother Margaret agreed. “I think this is amazing. We just moved here a year ago and I love what Marmora had to offer.”

For Kaitlyn Murphy, summer student with Marmora tourism, it was her final day on the job and it was one she was enjoying as she handed out miner’s hats to the first 25 kids. The kids also got to take home some excavation kits.

Laurie Smith of Campbellford was there with her grandson Grayson Walker and her daughter Holly.

“Grayson’s great-great-great-grandfather had a gold mine in Larder Lake,” she said.

The family took a road trip to see the mine and she thought the miner's day was a great adventure too.

"The further you are from your history you lose it, so to bring it back and make it part of the town again is great,” she commented.

The event featured information on the history of the mines in the area and the Trans Canada Trail.

New ed director named for KPRD School Board

Peterborough — The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board has announced the appointment of Dr. Jennifer Leclerc as the board’s new director of education.

Leclerc has served as superintendent of education: teaching and learning since joining the board in January 2010.

The announcement was made Aug. 23.

She was appointed interim director of education in May. “Jennifer is an accomplished educator and provincial leader in student achievement. We feel incredibly fortunate that she will be able to bring her wealth of professional and administrative skills to her new role,” said Cathy Abraham, board chairperson.

“An innovative educator, Jennifer has extensive experience in developing and supporting strategies to ensure student success — the main priority for our board," she added in a press release.

A Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, Leclerc’s research focused explicitly on exploring the components of effective teaching practices,

beliefs about ability and disability, and the impact on teaching and learning using quantitative and qualitative research methods.

With more than 30 years of experience in education, prior to joining the board Leclerc held a number of administrative and leadership positions with the Durham Catholic District School Board and York University.

She also previously served as a student achievement officer at the ministry of education, where she was instrumental in leading a number of large school boards toward improved student achievement and instructional leadership.

“I am incredibly honoured and humbled by this new opportunity the board has given me as director of education,” stated Leclerc.

"I believe this is truly an exciting time to be a leader in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board ... I greatly look forward to working in collaboration with the board, our excellent staff, supportive community partners, and most importantly, all our wonderful students and parents, as we pursue success and achievement for all."

She begins her new role Sept. 1.

Madoc — Madoc Public Library has closed the book on the TD summer reading program.

Making dreamcatchers became the focus of the final activity, giving the children who participated a new learning experience at the library.

Crafts, stories, games and more were all part of the program which started on July 6 and wrapped up on Aug. 24.

The program was held on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., for children age six to 11, and on Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., for children age three to six.

This year’s theme at the library was all about Canada and during the past few weeks the children have learned about the maple leaf, the beaver as a Canadian symbol, the Canadian Olympics, provinces and territories and most recently a week with a theme focused on Indigenous peoples of Canada.

Catrina McColl of Madoc, a student at Trent University enrolled in teacher education, has been running this year’s program at the library.

“I love my job here at the library, but I especially enjoy working with all of the children within my community. I look forward to each week and getting to share some of my own knowledge reading about Canada with them. It is never a dull moment and that’s why I am so passionate about becoming a teacher,” she told the Central Hastings News.

Each week McColl designed a program to correspond with a different theme. The children had the opportunity to read stories, play games, create artwork as well as use the resources at the library.

According to McColl, “After every lesson, we come upstairs where the children have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with all the resources the library has to offer. It is my goal to make reading a fun and enjoyable experience for all these youngsters.”

Library staff has been very impressed with the amount of talent in the community of Madoc. Each week McColl has hung up the children’s art and crafts for the public and the artists themselves to enjoy.

“The children’s art adds such a nice touch to the library. Everyone, including myself, loves to see all the passion that goes into creating every piece. Not to mention a little punch of colour is always nice to incorporate within the walls of the library,” said McColl.

Overall, it was evident to see that the children in this last week’s program have had both a fun and educational time creating their very own dream catchers and Inuksuks.

“Seeing all of their smiles at the end of each week reminds me why I want to be a teacher,” McColl concluded.

Cindy Nelles plays in three World Cup games

Belleville – Belleville native Cindy Nelles contributed to Canada’s fifth-place finish at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Ireland this summer, which concluded for Canada with a 43-12 victory over Australia on Saturday.

Nelles, a Belleville Bulldogs Rugby Club alumni who went on to star for McMaster University, was playing in her second World Cup. She was part of Canada’s silvermedal winning team at the 2014 World Cup in France, when she joined the team as an injury replacement.

Nelles played second row and finished the tournament with one try. She also had an outstanding 96 per cent tackle success rate, the tournament’s website showed. She also had 12 caries over gain line and carried the ball for a total of 71 metres.

Yet strangely – and this puzzles many local fans – she only played in three games.

Nelles suited up and contributed to Canada’s 98-0 rout over Hong Kong in the tournament opener.

But she didn’t play in subsequent games against Wales, a 15-0 win for Canada, and New Zealand, a 48-5 loss that eliminated Canada’s chances at a medal. She returned to the lineup for the fifth-place semifinal game against Wales, where she scored a second-half try en route to a 52-0 win.

Hastings Fiber Fest celebrates textile

New kind of business jazzes up downtown Hastings

Hastings – The Village Mercantile hopes to bring more life to downtown Hastings.

The business in the recently-expanded series of storefronts near the corner of Front Street West and Bridge Street brings together Foot Prints Foot Care, Colette’s Creations — featuring alterations, mending and dry-cleaning — a clothing section and the Galleria selling work by local artists and artisans.

“We’re hoping to cover pretty much everything,” says proprietor Collette McMurran, a talented seamstress and sewer who moved to the village in 2008 trading the bustle of Peterborough for a small-town lifestyle.

She opened the alterations store last summer and had thought about expanding across three storefronts — opening it all back up as it once was when it housed a grocery store.

“It’s been a big, challenging project. We’re very excited about this,” McMurran said.

“We’ve heard a lot of good things. People are happy to see us opening and like the idea of being able to shop in Hastings rather than travelling to Campbellford or Peterborough.”

The notion had been “percolating” since last July.

“We did a survey last summer and talked to a lot of people who came into the store and asked them what they wanted to see in Hastings.

“Things just fell into place and we were able to do it earlier,” she said of the significant interior renovations that have opened up the commercial unit.

McMurran loves Hastings and what the future holds for it as subdivisions build out and the 407 extension makes it easier to flee the GTA for Northumberland.

“There’s a lot of growth in Hastings. There’s so much growth potential and we’re happy to be part of it. The best part of it is that it takes me seven minutes to walk to work.”

Hastings-Roseneath food bank still needs volunteers

The demand on volunteers is slight, Kock stresses.

“We mostly require people to come on shift once a month.”

Volunteers don’t need to attend meetings if they don’t want to and there’s no heavy-lifting, she adds. “You’re helping your community and that’s one of the great satisfactions.”

Kock says they even have volunteers who’ve moved to Peterborough, but still return to help out. If you’re interested in volunteering call 705 696-1105.

Hastings – The Hastings-Roseneath Food Bank would like to find a few more volunteers.

“We’ve been looking for volunteers. I can say that this year,” president Brenda Kock said during the organization’s fourth annual summer yard sale at the Civic Centre.

The organization has 16 volunteers and operates every Tuesday (afternoons and evenings) out of Trinity United Church in Hastings. In February, the food bank shifted from space in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church when that church closed its doors.

It was full circle for the organization which first provided services to the community from Trinity United in the 1980s.

Hastings – The eighth annual Hastings Fiber Festival encouraged visitors to recall personal connections to textiles and the fiber arts.

“Textiles mean something to everyone,” says festival founder and organizer Skye Morrison who welcomed guests to the Civic Centre. “That’s what I want people to take away with them. Textiles are a deeply connected part of our culture. Everyone has a story to tell.”

She hoped the festival teased out some of those memories.

Bill Freeman/Metroland of a textile arts hub which Morrison sees as a fitting extension of the once thriving cotton mills that existed in Hastings and Campbellford. The festival has made a point of celebrating the variety that exists within the local textile arts community.

She began the festival as a tribute to the Hastings Knitters, a busy group of volunteer knitters from Hastings and surrounding communities who make garments for charitable causes.

“It’s so very much part of their tradition,” Morrison says.

Dr. Morrison is an artist and textile scholar who spends part of each year in India where she has lectured, conducted research and helped women’s groups establish viable textile collectives and businesses.

“Textiles are a sort of second skin (so) what we are doing its reconnecting to our second skin,” she says.

Indian women involved in textile arts and able to make a living through their work have been given a degree of autonomy, Morrison says, and that’s opened up travel opportunities within India and abroad. “Autonomy is extremely important.”

Textiles are viewed differently in North America, she adds, where its place in the economy is different than it is in India. “It isn’t an industry here while it’s the second largest industry in India.

It’s much easier to garner interest in India because of the scale of things.”

She hopes the festival has piqued interest the fiber arts, its variety, history and importance both locally and globally.

ment to his ankle – one of the OPP canine dogs reportedly bit him while he was on the loose and he may require stitches.

It will also allow time for police and the courts to get a better grasp on all the charges, Kort said.

He suspects most of the “violent” charges have been laid by police already, but there could be additional charges related to thefts.

By Thursday, “all the charges will be before the courts and we’ll know how we want to proceed,” Kort told Metroland Media, outside the courtroom.

As Vader appeared via video in front of Justice Sam Cureatz, he appeared tired and scruffy. Yet he understood the court proceedings and was given conditions to not contact two people, whose names are protected by a publication ban.

Kort said that Vader has agreed to be detained while the matter plays out in court.

He declined to shed light on conversations he’s had with his client, but said he expects the court proceedings to be complex, given that Vader is expected to soon be facing a long list of charges.

“It will take a while,” he said.

Belleville – The Trenton man who eluded local police for four days while on the run from what police allege was a violent encounter with his former girlfriend, was brought to ground Saturday night and appeared in court Monday, Aug. 28.

Richard “Richie” Vader had dodged police in a mad scramble to avoid capture since last Wednesday when police went after him in Quinte West to arrest him on an assault charge.

Ontario Provincial Police had their Repeat Offender ROPE squad on the case, canine and ERT specialists, a helicopter and more in the hunt for Vader, who has a long criminal record and was on parole for gun charges on which he was convicted in 2011.

Vader was the focus of an extensive search that went from Quinte West to Thursday Campbellford, on to Stirling-Rawdon, into and out of the city of Belleville and finally ended when the OPP canine unit ran him down in a field outside the hamlet of Wallbridge, in Quinte West.

Vader had the town of Campbellford virtually on lockdown when he crashed a stolen vehicle near the World’s Finest chocolate factory, fleeing on foot into the brush and toward Ferris Provincial Park last Thursday. When night closed in he had still not be located and later police said Vader made his way to a farm south of Ferris Provincial Park where he allegedly stole an ATV. That ATV was then recovered (still running) in a field in the Hoards Station area of Stirling/Rawdon. He then stole a truck, police said. By Saturday morning, he had made his wayinto Belleville, where he once again stayed ahead of police who had spotted him in the city limits.

“The domestic related charges that he is wanted for stem from an incident in the Quinte West area as well as several other charges incurred recently,” said Const.. Stephen Bates, media relations officer with the Northumberland OPP. Social media postings have kept Vader’s pursuit alive on the Internet. Vader is no stranger to jail – or guns

Richard Allen “Richie” Vader has a long criminal history, not the least of which involves a serious arrest in 2010 for possession of a small arsenal of weapons while he was restricted from so much as owning a BB gun.

His criminal past goes a long way to explaining why OPP pulled out all the stops to bring him to ground over the past week, using SWAT style teams, dogs and helicopters in the hunt.

Vader’s latest major criminal run-in came in 2010 when he was arrested while living in Cobourg for possessing an array of firearms and knives.

During a routine traffic stop for a burned-out headlight, in October, 2010, police stumbled on what would turn out to be a large cache of weapons and ammunition in Vader’s possession and in a later search of his home.

During the stop, an officer noticed a metal ammunition box on the passenger floor, checked the box and found it was full of shotgun shells, said police. A subsequent search of the truck revealed three shotguns, four rifles, a revolver, more

than 322 rounds of ammunition and two knives.

At the time, police said Vader, was arrested and, when they later searched his apartment, they seized a “fully-loaded revolver, ten boxes of assorted ammunition and seven more knives. At the time, he was under a court order not to possess weapons.

The manhunt for Vader, now 33, was reminiscent of the spree almost 20 years ago when the infamous Ty Conn, who in

1999 managed to be one of very few criminals to escape from Kingston Penitentiary, stole vehicles in the Oak Hills area (near where he grew up on what is now Foxboro-Stirling Road) while on the run.

Conn, a repeat offender and bank robber, eventually made his way to Toronto while on the lam and either killed himself or was shot in a basement apartment while police surrounded his location. His death was subject of books and a television documentary at the time, but while

Woman pleads guilty to animal cruelty involving horse NORTHUMBERLAND NEWS

Brighton - A Brighton woman has pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty after investigators discovered an Arabian horse in distress at her property.

On March 26, 2016, an Ontario SPCA agent responded to a call about a German shepherd type dog with a serious facial injury.

An inspection of a property led the agent to find several dogs and horses at a Brighton property.

On May 27 of that year Linda Reddall, of Brighton, was charged with six counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act. The charges include two counts of permitting distress to an animal, two counts of failing to comply with standards of care — fail to provide adequate and appropriate medical attention, and two counts of failing to comply with standards of care — fail to provide care necessary for their general welfare.

On June 19, 2017, Reddall pleaded guilty to one count of permitting an animal to be in distress.

According to the OSPCA, Reddall, as an owner or custodian of an animal, did permit one Arabian type horse named Daisy to be in distress.

The horse was examined by a veterinarian and found to have a Body Condition Score (BCS) of 1 out of 9, rain rot on her back, severe dental issues, 10 times the normal parasite load and a grade 2 systolic heart murmur due to malnutrition.

Due to the severity of her health, Daisy was humanely euthanized under recommendations from the veterinarian.

Reddall was sentenced and is prohibited from owning or caring for any equine until such time as equine training courses are successfully completed as offered by the University of Guelph.

She is also prohibited for a period of two years from owning, caring for or living with more than six canine animals.

On July 31 of this year Reddall surrendered 11 horses and one German shepherd type dog into the care of the Northumberland Humane Society.

“There is no excuse to let an animal go without proper veterinary medical attention,” said Kate Lennan, the general manager of the Northumberland Humane Society. “If you are unable to provide care for your animal, please contact the Northumberland Humane Society to discuss available options.”

Dirt biker dies after collision north of Havelock BILL FREEMAN

Havelock – A 36-year-old Scarborough off-road rider was killed after colliding with a tree on Devil’s 4 Mile Road about nine kilometers northeast of Havelock on Aug. 27.

Peterborough County OPP say that a group of off-road riders were travelling together along Devil’s 4 Mile Road and after arriving at their destination discovered that one member of the group was not there. Two members of the group retraced their route and discov-

ered their missing friend along the side of the gravel road.

The rider, David Spiecher, 36, of Scarborough was taken to Campbellford Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m.

Sunday afternoon.

Devil’s 4 Mile Road was closed for several hours Sunday while OPP investigators measured and documented the scene.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

A glimpse of the Group of Seven in Havelock BILL FREEMAN

Havelock– Children here have been travelling around the country – without leaving the library – thanks to the magic of books and stories.

The summer reading program celebrating Canada's 150th birthday has been teaching kids in HavelockBelmont-Methuen about the country.

Their most recent stop “stop” was the far north.

This bit of northern exposure was courtesy of local artist Sheila Johnston who gave them a glimpse of the majestic work of the Group of Seven and, in particular, its leader and financier Lawren Harris.

Johnston wanted to help the children understand “how important the Group of Seven was to Canadian culture.” She helped them create their own Group of Seven-inspired painting.

“There’s something about his paintings that are just glorious,” she says of Harris, the scion of the wealthy Harris Manufacturing clan. Harris’s paintings, particularly his northern landscapes, are vivid and defiantly modern and reflect some of things he absorbed during extended visits to Berlin.

“He went back to Europe a few times but he said he hated it because it was too crowded. He liked being up north in the wilderness.”

Harris eventually severed his connection to the affluent and bohemian Toronto arts world he helped establish, moving first to the United States then Mexico and later to Vancouver while his work grew in stature.

Harris died in 1970 at age of 84. His paintings have sold for record prices most notably 'Mountain Forms' which sold for $11.2 million in 2016.

Canada didn’t have a real painting heritage until the Group of Seven, Johnston says. Artists painting just before them often mimicked established styles.

“That’s what people did. They copied. (The Group of Seven) was a real break in terms of style and subject.”

Johnston is inspired by their tradition if not their style.

“It gives be a sense of place and I’m just proud.

Quinte area will have a better view of 2024 eclipse

Belleville – If you enjoyed the spectacle of the Aug. 21, 2017 eclipse, mark the date of April 8 in your 2024 calendar.

That’s the date of the next significant eclipse to pass through North America and for the 2024 edition, the path of totality, as the complete eclipse is known, will pass directly through the Quinte region.

The Aug. 21 eclipse’s path of totality passed through a stretch of the United States, from northern Oregon to South Carolina. In places along that path, news footage showed, darkness fell suddenly over the sky for a few minutes, giving cheering spectators a view of an awesome phenomenon ¬– one not rivalled on the continent since a similar event in 1979.

But, eclipse fans in Belleville on Aug. 21 saw only a partial eclipse, as the moon only partially covered the sun when the eclipse hit its maximum at 2:34 p.m. Although some observed a faint drop in temperature, there was no obvious difference in the surrounding sky.

On April 8, 2024, the eclipse’s path of totality is expected to travel north in a path that will take it over major U.S. cities such as Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo. Toronto will be on the outskirts of the path of totality, but the Quinte region will be right in the path, according to several Internet sources.

The path will continue to travel through major centres in Quebec and the Maritimes, including Sherbrook and Fredericton.

If the interest in the Aug. 21 event is any indication ¬ ¬– and if it turns out be a clear day ¬– the 2024 event will get plenty of people outside to witness the rare sight.

A viewing party at Belleville’s Market Square on Aug. 21, organized by the Belleville Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, drew hundreds of people, who starred into the sky through telescopes, special glasses and even homemade devices.

“I expected 20 to 30 people,” said Donald Town, who organized the event, as a lineup of people gathered around his telescope. “Looking around, I’m seeing close to 500.”

Our children gave us a wonderful gift of a relaxing day in the country at Ste. Anne’s Spa in Grafton, Ontario. Our all-inclusive package included the entire day at the spa, with a choice of treatments and group wellness classes, including yoga, meditation, hiking, and/or a stretch class. Plow judge says Hastings plowing match one of the best

Typical of the season, a downpour of rain the previous day and night left plenty of muddy tracks despite efforts to cover it with fill, especially on opening day Wednesday. And to reinforce its point, the rain came back with another brief downpour in the middle of the afternoon. Despite that though, Thursday’s main roads and streets through the exhibitors village were much dryer.

One man who had little time to take in the glitz of the exhibitors was Dale Drake from the hamlet of Woodville, near Lindsay. A man “born to the plow” he participated in plowing matches for many years, but for the past several years, because of failing health, he has been a judge.

“The only similar event bigger than this in Ontario is the annual International Plowing Match,” he affirmed with some knowledge. ‘This draws a strong interest by horse-drawn plows and plowmen from across Ontario.”

He assessed the field on the Sandercock farm as “quite good” for plowing conditions, but he added: “I feel sorry for the young people plowing up at the top. There’s a lot of rock up there.” That area was also used by media, senior and politician competitors during the event.

But as long as there is a plowing match somewhere in Ontario, he remains game to be “outstanding in his field” with score chart and pen.

but he learned plowing and all other farm skills when his Irish grandparents bought a farm near Toronto when they came here. “It was just like being a hired hand,” he said of his youth-hood at his grandparents farm, ”only it was free labour.”

As he tucked away his tractor and plow on a trailer and prepared to head to Ottawa for yet another

plowing match, Roberts reflected on the Trenton event. “I’ve done better and I’ve done worse.”

He added: “There are 18 different points of judging, including straightness, depth, not too deep, not too shallow, no tractor tire marks where they shouldn’t be and more.” He noted that the huge field being used was once many small fields and the old fence rows underneath can cause a lot of problems, even heavy combining equipment going over it.

Even under normal conditions, the plow blades get bounced around and must be readjusted every other furrow or so.

He agreed that interest in the plowing competitions is waning, mostly because of the current trend toward “no till” farming. It helps conserve the soil, saves a lot of time for various processes to plow, disc and harrow and also extra equipment. But there remains a tradition across the province for most counties to hold their own separate plowing matches with participants eligible to enter the all Ontario, also called “International” plowing match.

Surprisingly, the Hastings event drew a good number of horse-drawn entries and traditionally, always has. This year’s roster included a team of mules, recently purchased in Tennessee. Their proud youthful teamster, Trevor Boutilier of Belleville, said; “This is my first time to plow with mules, but I’ve used Belgians before. I think mules can outwork horses.”

One particularly proud competitor was Dan Sandercock on whose family farm the event was being held for the second time. At the age of 90, he placed first in the senior plowman category, using his own antique tractor and antique plow.

There’s more to plowing than making a furrow

Quinte West - If you turn over a patch of soil with a plow, you make a furrow.

But, competitors in plowing matches know there are furrows and then there are furrows.

Plowing competition enthusiast Winston Roberts comes from Toronto, but his Irish immigrant grandparents bought a farm near Toronto when they came and that’s where he spent his youthful years.

Judges will note whether the furrow is dead straight, not too deep, not too shallow, no tire tracks where they shouldn’t be and various other points in the 18 points of judging.

Most of those participating admit that regular plowing competition interest seems to be dying off. At one time, every county in Ontario held its own local plowing match with participants then eligible to enter the all Ontario match. But, modern “no-till” farming methods designed to enhance conservation and save time and money on extra equipment have meant regular plowing is not used so much.

“No-till is killing regular plowing,” said Roberts. Plus, there is less interest in general by working farmers, especially younger ones.

Despite being a Torontonian, Robert said he loves the plowing competitions and does it as a “hobby.” He is a member of both the Ontario Antique Tractor Plowmen’s Association and the Ontario Plowmen’s Association.

He usually takes part in several plowing matches across Ontario every year. He has also competed in the Prairie provinces and the east coast.

Families encouraged to boost veggies and fruit intake The Healthy Kids Community Challenge Hastings Prince Edward will be encouraging local families to Choose to Boost Veggies and Fruit this fall, and emphasizing the importance of making vegetables and fruits part of their diet every day.

We want to thank Dan for his many years of timely, informative, humorous columns on all things about The Good Earth and wish him well. Stay tuned for our new gardening columnist, appearing in the Sept. 7 edition.)

O&S #1 Trees and Grass If you live in a newer subdvision where you are establishing both a lawn and some future shade trees, you face a challenge. Often the top layer of soil has been scraped away and returned (reinstated would be the word on some contracts); however, the soil has very different properties. The many, many years of establishing various layers or zones have been nullified. Aeration is gone, the micro-organisms no longer have their preferred micro-zones, cation exchange capacity (one function is the ability of the sail to manage nutrients) and, perhaps the most important, drainage is seriously compromised. In short, you no longer have a vital soil; you possess a flattened pile of dirt with a big box on it.

Growing grass in these conditions is relatively easy: lots and lots of water. Unfortunately, this is an expensive way to successfully drown any newly planted trees surrounded by the sward. What often occurs, and this observation is a direct result of many “tree checks” that I have carried over the years, is that the only loose soil on a subdivision’s property is the hole into which the tree was planted. Because of the poor drainage, this hole

will become saturated as excess water collects during lawn irrigation.

There are many options but here is my suggestion.

Let’s suppose you want five mature maples and you are budgeting $500.00 per tree spread over five years. This is a very common plan. Buy the smallest trees you can afford...to look at. So, five trees at $100.00 each is the better option. A smaller tree will establish itself much more quickly than a larger tree; it will use less water; and, if it does succumb, you’ve minimized your loss.

Hastings County Planning Committee last week approved two large lot separations in Tyendinaga Township, but not without prolonged discussion and stiff opposition by a neighbour farmer.

Resident Oliver Haan opposed the lot separations proposed by his neighbour on grounds that it could interfere with his family’s right to continue farming. He accepted setbacks the province considers adequate, but will probably still lead to friction with his swine operation. But he is particularly concerned with water quantity.

“We sit on top of a limestone shelf and we have seen other incidents in the neighbourhood of new dwellings overloading the water source,” he said.

He stressed, “I’m not talking about my future.

My children are here and they are interested in keeping the farm going. It is their future that is at stake.”

He reminded the committee of council as a whole that protecting “right to farm” is entrenched in its policies, but they don’t seem to stick. He said real farmers across Hastings County are all “frustrated” at the lack of protection for their right to make a living. Newcomers from the city continue to threaten and complain about nearby farming practices, cattle getting out and more.

His remarks drew support from several members who suggested hydrological studies to analyse the water table and registering a warning on the deeds about right-to-farm protection.

Planning chief Justin Harrow, said the size of the two lots at over four acres each, negates the water source threat and a hydrology study could cost thousands of dollars. Other members figured

it could trigger a policy commitment to have studies done on all lot separations at tremendous cost.

Both lots have tested and approved drilled wells; the land involved is not prime agriculture, but marginal and the extra setbacks meet right to farm specifications, members figured.

In another land division hearing, Haan himself was applying to separate an existing house from a portion of his land. That was approved with little comment.

Much of the meeting also involved the county’s economic development department. Director, Andrew Redden, reported on various new developments and procedures following a consultant’s study.

Director of Planning and Development Justin Harrow also announced that because of the increasing activity in economic development, “I want a meeting set aside just for economic development. We will hold a special meeting on Oct. 27 following the regular meeting of county council.” That too was approved.

Dates for public meetings for input on the county’s new Official Plan were also announced.

The first will be Monday, Aug. 28 from 9:30 a.m. through noon at the Hastings Highlands Municipal Offices at 33011 Highway 62 at Maynooth.

Wednesday, Aug. 30 is 3 p.m. to 5 p,n, and 6 ti 8 p.m. at the Dungannon Recreation Centre at L’Amable. Thursday, Aug. 31 the sessions move to Tyendinaga Township Rec Centre from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and finally, Tuesday Sept. 5 from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. in Township of Madoc Hall, 15651, Highway 62.

Harrow also announced full details on the plan on the county’s website plus input through that means.

Worrisome night for Campbellford residents

Campbellford – Elderly neighbours in Campbellford breathed a sigh of relief at news of the arrest of fugitive Richard Vader last Saturday.

Two women who live in Campellford, near where Vader had fled from police last Wednesday, said they felt lucky to have made it through the night without mishap.

Marlene Harris and Judith Wilkinson said they saw the police cruisers and heavily armed officers on their street, which leads to one end of nearby Ferris Provincial Park, and there was a helicopter overhead.

At first they had no idea what was happening.

“I had been watching the police helicopter circle around Ferris and I thought ‘well there’s something going on,’ but we were all in awe and didn’t know what was happening, and that’s worse because your mind starts playing tricks.”

They were later told, by an OPP officer to: “Go in your house and lock the doors. Somebody has escaped and is up here to do harm.”

Wilkinson’s reaction when told was, “Oh my gosh here I am in the middle of this, gotta shut everything down, close my drapes and lock my doors. . . . I phoned my friends and told them what was going on in case anything happened.”

Harris took the same precautions.

According to police Vader made his way to a farm south of Ferris Provincial Park where he stole an ATV. That ATV was later recovered (still running) in a field in the Hoards Station area of StirlingRawdon. Police allege Vader then stole a truck to further his escape, Judith Wilkinson, left, with her dog Billie, and her neighbour Marlene Harris, with Teddy, both live near Ferris Park in then into its third day.

He was eventually arrested in the Wallbridge area of Quinte West, Campellford, where the manhunt for Richard Vader was happening.

Local teacher’s union won’t support controversial Sir John A. motion

Belleville - The local ETFO President says he won’t support his own union’s motion to call for the renaming of schools named after Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister.

Dave Henderson, the president of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario’s Hastings-Prince Edward chapter, spoke about the issue with the Belleville News, days after the union made headlines for the motion, passed at its recent Annual General Meeting.

“The people who put this motion forward talked about it being about reconciliation,” he said. “But reconciliation is about forgiveness and moving forward.

This is about finding scapegoats.”

The official statement, released by the ETFO on Aug. 24, says “the motion recognizes that Macdonald has been celebrated based on an incomplete version of Canadian history. As a central architect of the Indian Act and residential schools, Macdonald played a key role in developing systems that perpetuated genocide against Indigenous people.

“Passing this motion recognizes the impact this history has on all of our students, but specifically on Indigenous students, parents and educators.”

The motion plays on the momentum going in the southern United States, where there’s new and intense discussion about removing statues of Confederate heroes, given that many of them fought for slavery and don’t properly pay tribute to African American’s contributions to the country.

The same issue was at the heart of the recent violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Henderson was at the meeting and voted against the Sir John A. Macdonald move.

He said it was passed towards the end of the day when many delegates had left. Despite that, he recognized that a clear majority were in favour of it. But, he told the union’s president he would not support the motion publicly.

Henderson also wrote to Hastings Prince Edward District School Board officials and asked them to ignore any calls to action as a result of this motion.

That likely means there won’t be a push to name the Sir John A. Macdonald School, an elementary school located in Belleville’s west end.

Henderson, who teaches history at the senior elementary level, says he’s in favour of teaching Canadian history truthfully “warts and all” but he feels a more appropriate way to better honour Indigenous communities would be to make an effort to name more schools after important First Nations leaders.

“This motion is not in the spirit of reconciliation or the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on residential schools. While it is an historical fact that Sir John A.’s government carried out a policy which ultimately was judged a failure and which left First Nations communities badly damaged, it is also true that all successive governments until the 1990s continued this policy.

That list contains other prime ministerial giants such as Laurier, Borden, Mackenzie King, and Pierre Trudeau. That is a lot of renaming to do.”

also concerned about how the story is impacting ETFO’s brand. He’s been reading online comments on the issue and observed that “99 to 1” seem to be against it.

He said the motion will have to stand until next year’s AGM, when union members could potentially vote to rescind it.

However, he’s not worried it will lead to significant change, as the renaming of a school is a very public process that would involve input from trustees and the public.

“I would think if trustees polled the public they’d find people don’t have an appetite for it,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Hastings

Prince Edward District School Board is staying clear of the issue for now.

“We are aware of a resolution that the provincial ETFO passed,” said the board’s communication director, Kerry Donnell, in a statement.

“We need to gather more information and connect with a number of different parties before any additional statements can be made, and that will take some time.”

Standing by for possible refugee influx

Hastings County has signalled its willingness to work with the federal government and other agencies to help shelter the increasing number of refugees, especially from Haiti, in recent days.

Emergency Medical Services Chief Doug Socha appeared at a meeting of the county’s finance committee meeting Thursday to report he had been contacted to prepare for further details should more space be needed, and added space at CFB Trenton might be considered. If it comes to that, he said the county might be needed for assistance by paramedics and ambulances, medical, public health and shelter participation.

As for the possibility of refugees being housed

at CFB Trenton in cadet training quarters or elsewhere, enquiries Tuesday showed there is little to no information forthcoming there.

Public affairs officials at 8 Wing said the official line from Ottawa’s National Defence HQ is as follows: “At this point there has been no formal demand to the Canadian Armed Forces, but we are working with our partners at Public Safety Canada in order to find alternative solutions if there are more asylum seekers than available lodging at the current sites. Right now we are conducting checks at various bases…”

Hastings County CAO Jim Pine said staff will be prepared if and when needed. Socha noted a meeting was scheduled for the following day to consider whether the base might in fact be needed.

Birthday wishes from around the globe

Belleville - One lucky girl is going to have quite the birthday surprise, thanks to the help of social media.

Meet Sarah Doucette: a local 22-year-old media student and documentary filmmaker who just needed a birthday present for her younger sister, Hannah who will be turning 21 in September.

“Her birthday is coming up September 3, so I was trying to think about what I could get her or do for her. Our family is one to not go crazy on big purchases, but do more-so homemade stuff and get creative,” says Doucette.

“I don’t honestly know how the idea sort of struck me, I come from a background of film and TV so I thought maybe a video or something. So, I ended up having the idea of having people send in videos of themselves saying Happy Birthday Hannah from whatever country they’re from.”

According to Doucette, her sister Hannah, who is on the Autism spectrum, is in love with destinations.

“She loves people, and she loves different cultures -- she’s very curious and outgoing and she’s constantly talking about where she wants to travel, so I thought it would be a cool idea for her. She might love seeing all these different people from different places.”

Doucette says the amount of responses she has received has been completely unexpected.

“I wrote up a message and made a Facebook post, just thinking maybe that I’d get it in the local area or in some of the bigger cities like Toronto and Ottawa,” says Doucette.

“And then one thing led to another and the first video that I got was from Australia. My friends shared with their friends and the whole community sort of took it from there and it just blew up. The first ‘wow’ country I got was when

I got one from Saudi Arabia. It’ really strange to think about how far it’s spread.”

Since the Facebook post, Doucette says that she’s received over 100 video submissions.

“I thought it might last a couple days, but I keep receiving videos daily, through the morning and the afternoon and into the night. My inbox is completely full.”

Doucette says her and her sister are extremely close, and this project was one way she could fulfil her sisters unwavering curiosity.

“Hannah has a very colourful personality. She is very social, I’d say, for someone with autism, with the limited social interactions. She’s very, very smart and very skilled with numbers and calendars. She’s actually a calendrical savant,” says Doucette.

“Mainly, she just loves travel.

That’s always something I’ve associated with her, she loves going to big cities, she loves meeting different people. As soon as I’m talking to someone she may not recognize,

she’ll ask them their name, where they’re from, when they were born.

She wants to know everything about them.”

Once the compilation video is complete, Doucette says she plants to upload it to YouTube for the unveiling.

“Once I have it finished, I’m going to put it on YouTube, and then from YouTube, I’m going to share it on Facebook and whoever has that link can do what they want with it.”

Doucette says she’s thankful for the support that she’s received to help complete the project.

“My family and I are so thankful for everyone’s’ help in this. Especially in such a time where it is so easy to be hurt by people, it feels really good to see what people can accomplish together in a positive way.”

Loyalist College’s renamed Indigenous Resource Centre honours heritage Belleville – Loyalist College is dropping the word “aboriginal” from an important college facility and replacing it with the word “indigenous.”

The facility, once known as the Aboriginal Resource Centre, will now be known as the Indigenous Resource Centre.

“We strongly encourage the use of the word ‘indigenous’ in lieu of the term ‘aboriginal’ in all instances,” said Paul Latchford, co-ordinator of Indigenous Services at Loyalist. “Using the correct vernacular will help us create a more positive learning environment for our First Nations, Inuit and Métis students.”

The semantic shift to ‘indigenous,’ as the preferred term for the original inhabitants of Canada, follows the federal government’s 2015 decision to change the name of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs to Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.

The indigenous reference is more commonly recognized internationally, perhaps most notably in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The centre was established in 1996 to provide friendship, assistance and services to Indigenous students. Today it continues to ensure appropriate support for Indigenous students on campus and acts as a liaison between college administration, Indigenous communities and government agencies.

The centre provides pre-admission counselling to prospective students about admission, transcripts, funding and program planning; orientation for new students; academic and individual counselling for students enrolled at Loyalist.

It also provides a study space and access to computers, printers, Internet and email, circle events, and indigenous newsletters and papers.
