Events Calendar Mushers hit the trail Saturday for the annual Eldorado Dog Sled Races. Sue Dickens/Metroland
BY SUE DICKENS
Madoc Township - Enthusiasm for the 3rd annual Eldorado sled dog race was palpable even though the event’s four mushers and their dog teams was half the number entered last year. The disappointing turnout didn’t stop the competitive focus of the main event, a 30-mile race, which was downsized to a 20-mile race due to warmer than usual weather conditions melting the snow. Marmora musher Shane Cox of Omiske Kennels, who revived the Eldorado sled dog race after a four-year hiatus, was the winner this year with a time of 1:48:47.
The morning of the race Cox talked about how important it is for him to see it continue. “It’s nice to have this race. There’s not a lot of sled dog races around anymore,” he commented. “It’s local and keeps everybody coming back here.” Mushers and their dogs arrived early on Sat. Feb. 18, for the 7 a.m. registration. Preparations were soon underway by the Lions Club for food and refreshments while volunteers set up a silent auction. A hand carved bear was up for grabs as well. Little Nippers races and more were part of family fun. “Sled dog racing is about just be-
ing out there with the dogs . . . because they really enjoy it too,” commented one of the mushers, Frank Horn of Elphin, Ont. “I’m single and by myself out in the bush so the social part of racing is something I like as well.” He reminisced about competing before the hiatus when the races used to be an “80-miler, then a 50-miler.” Saturday’s race started in a field across from the Madoc Township municipal offices, home base for the weekend. The mushers headed out at two-minute intervals along the Centre Hastings Heritage loop. The sounds of the excited sled
dogs in harness, Alaskan Huskies for the most part, echoed across the fields of snow. As each musher took to the trail the dogs stopped barking as they focused on the task at hand and all that could be heard was the woosh of sleds sliding swiftly across the snow. It wasn’t the 10-day 1,600 km Yukon Quest or the upcoming 2017 Iditarod, 1,850 km long, also known as the “Last Great Race,” and the field of competitors may have been fewer this year, but the Eldorado sled dog race was just as important to the dogs and mushers who continue to express their passion for the sport.
