News – Tweed – Council signalled at its March meeting a possible confrontation is looming with the provincial government over new legislation affecting municipalities. Mayor Jo-Anne Albert expressed particular concern over two new pieces of proposed legislation which would affect Ontario municipalities. She reported that at a recent meeting of the Ontario Good Roads Association, “many key issues were discussed,” including Bill 69, the Prompt Payment Act. “Bill 69 is very important for us,” Albert said. The act has been challenged by the AMO (Association of Ontario Municipalities) and AMO president Russ Powers has described Bill 69 as “flawed, constructed with-
out consultation ... and creates significant concerns for municipalities for the prudent management of public funds.” There appears to be widespread

News – Madoc – While the levy for Centre Hastings will increase by 2.2 percent, taxes on the average residential assessment will decrease for the municipal portion of the tax bill. The total current value assessment for the municipality increased enough to offset the budget increase and taxpayers will save a little cash. Treasurer for the municipality, Christine Martin says it sounds rather strange and complicated, but it means property
owners get about an $8 savings. She did make it clear that this is only the municipal budget. The budget for Hastings County has not yet been completed.
