News - Madoc - Town was a little cleaner Saturday afternoon than it was Saturday morning. About a dozen youth participated in the Madoc Trash Bash on April 26. The group consisted mostly of members of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets 385 based in Madoc, along with a couple of community volunteers. The group met at the Kiwanis Centre on St. Lawrence Street at 9 a.m. and then removed litter from areas in and around Centre Hastings Secondary School before moving to the west end of town. The Trash Bash has been hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Madoc for about ďŹ ve years, President Jim Denison said. It ďŹ ts with the club’s mandate to serve the community. And the Madoc cadets have been the event’s most loyal participants, as it helps them meet the requirements of their good citizenship program. “It certainly shows that there’s some major dedication,â€? Denison said, shortly after the cadets, decked in orange vests, hit the streets with garbage bags and gloves in hand. The bags were donated by Maunco. Gloves were supplied by Home Hardware. Tim Hortons supplied coffee and drinks and Foodland donated hot dogs for the post-work barbecue. Denison said the event typically results in a truckload of garbage, which Members of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps 385 pose for a photo with Kiwanis club members and community volunteers, during the Madoc Trash Bash. Despite the long winter that has just passed, the town of Madoc was in good shape heading into the weekend, Denison said. This may be because events like the Trash Bash are causing more citizens to think about cleaning up their neighbourhoods evBy Jack Evans “I can’t say there is major new The letter singles out local activists ery spring.
