Midget C Hawks All-Ontario OMHA Champions

Sports - Tweed - Returning to Tweed with two wins in hand in their final series with the Tavistock Titans, the Midget Hawks knew they could end the three-out-of-five series on Friday night.

With five minutes left in the game however, and trailing 3 - 1, it looked like the Hawks would have to meet the Titans the next day for game four.

Then in the final minutes of play in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Tweed-Hungerford Arena, the Hawks demonstrated their remarkable comeback abilities and with three quick goals in succession won the OMHA championship.

Fans’ sinking hopes rebounded with a short-handed goal by Tyson Cassidy, assisted by Ty Tebo with less than five minutes remaining in the third period.

Cheers shook the rafters when a minute later assistant captain Dylan Elson scored the tying goal with an assist by captain Dustin Maines. When Aaron Please see “Hawks” on page 2

Purvis, assisted by assistant captain Braden Allore got the go-ahead goal with a little over two minutes remaining, pandemonium erupted in the stands.

The game was fast and physically rough. Tavistock, stung by their back-to-

back home losses came on strong in the first period, getting past Jacob Cockins in goal for the Hawks with a high and hard shot into the corner of the net. The Hawks were able to kill the one boarding penalty they took in the first period.

The hits got harder and both teams

got scrappier in the corners and around the nets in the second period. A Hawks player hurtling into the Titans net left their goalie lying on the ice for anxious moments as he was checked over by his trainer. He was able to get back in the game without leaving the ice. The aggressive style of play was reflected in total penalty minutes: 18 minutes for Tweed, most of them in the third period, versus ten minutes for Tavistock.

Tavistock made it 2 - 0 early in the second period. Tweed was able to respond with only a single goal by Nate Broek, assisted by Dylan Elson and Tyson Cassidy. The Titans regained their advantage with another goal in the first few minutes of the third period and many fans were resigned to a fourth game on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks seemed to kick into gear and the Titans barely had a shot on net for the rest of the period. In a series of furious attacks the hard-working Hawks showed what they could do in a pinch and with three quick goals became the 2015 AllOntario Midget CC OHMA Champions, beating Tavistock 4 - 3 and taking the series in three straight games.

“There are no quitters on the Hawks,” said head coach Jeff Thompson.

News - Madoc - Mayor Tom Deline received good news at the Hastings County Council meeting March 26. A new doctor has been secured for the medical centre.

Dr. Laura Vance is expected to join the team sometime in late summer. Vance was recruited through the Hastings County Family Physician Recruitment Program.

Vance is originally from Tweed.

She completed her doctorate at McMaster University in 2013 and will be eligible to practise after completing her residency at Queen’s University. She is expected to join the Central Hastings team in late summer.

The regular council meeting in Centre Hastings March 25 was brief, as most staff and two council members were on vacation.

The mayor with Councillors Bob Hadley and Eric Sandford were in attendance with the interim fire chief and administrative staff.

There were no staff reports, but discussion ensued on two recommendations from the Parks, Recreation and Cultural committee considered “urgent,” asking council approve purchase of the items soon so they can be installed before the park opens in May. The first request to replace dam-

aged equipment in the splash pad at a cost of $9,565 plus shipping and installation costs was approved.

Their second request, air conditioning for the arts centre at $6,500, was deferred until budget talks.

Hadley brought up concerns over $220 spent to cater an emergency planning meeting at a local business. He stated there was more than adequate food for those in attendance with much left over.

He noted there is not a policy on such things and motioned staff work to develop a “hospitality policy” covering purchase of gifts, souvenirs, and working luncheons. The motion passed.

Sandford drew attention to a letter from the Ontario minister responsible for senior affairs announcing the 2015 Senior of the Year award program for municipalities. Sandford feels this information should be made public and that Centre Hastings sends out the call for nominations from within the municipality.

He noted there are many seniors in the community who should be acknowledged.

April 7, at 8 a.m. a closed meeting is scheduled to hire a new chief administrative officer/clerk. Mayor Deline said there was a good response to the hiring post with seven interviews conducted.

News - Stirling - Police charged a 29year-old Stirling man with assault with a weapon and uttering death threats following an altercation outside Mac’s Milk last week.

Stirling-Rawdon Police report that shortly before 5 a.m. last Wednesday the victim, who was a patron of the store, left the building and entered his vehicle alone. The suspect, who was also a patron of the store, approached

the victim’s vehicle and a conversation ensued. The suspect then produced a knife and attempted to stab the victim through the driver’s side window as it remained parked. The victim drove away, however, and the suspect followed on foot.

The man, who was apprehended and arrested later in the day, also faces charges of mischief and breach of recognizance.

I have worked as a volunteer for most of my adult life and have never experienced working with such a wellrun and cohesive group of volunteers.

Many people within the community have no idea that Memorial Park was the brainchild of the Lions Club here in Marmora: Brian Goodchild had a dream and the Lions Club has tried to carry it out. Each year the club has been funding about $20,000 to the park and a lot of volunteer hours, besides paying for one full time employee. Many other projects, such as the Crowe Valley Jamboree and the monthly jam sessions, raise funds for this community. A lot of volunteer hours go into each of these projects; kudos to

bands and singers at the jam sessions who mostly volunteer their time.

Many dollars are donated each year to hospitals for specific fundraising programs, some examples being Campbellford, Trenton, Belleville and Ottawa. The Lions Club also supports the food banks through direct funding and food drives at the Santa Claus parade.

Many other such donations are bursaries for six different schools, for sight dogs, hearing dogs and dogs for autistic children. When the Community Centre required new tables and chairs, the club purchased these items, plus several new tables and benches for the Memo-

rial Park. They support Easter Seals, the Lions Club Home for the Deaf, several disability camps for kids and support for the Almost Home hospice. This past year the club helped fund repairs to the town clock, and gave the sled dog races a substantial grant. They sponsor a St. Patrick’s Day Irish Stew dinner, plus a fish fry each fall, which is usually sold out well in advance. These are just a few of our fundraising projects.

At the last jam session of the year, a free luncheon is put on by the Lions Club to thank attendees for their support yearround. Music in the Park throughout the summer months is also organized by the

club and sponsored by local merchants approached by the Lions Club. Thanks to those community merchants for helping the Lions Club as this could not be done without their help.

In closing, I would like the community to realize that the Lions Club has only 38 members, but nothing is impossible if we work together to make things happen for our community and the good of all people. My husband and I would like to say thank-you for the privilege of being members of this vibrant club.

Dear Editor, We have received in rapid succession, a series of flyers from MP Daryl Kramp, letting us ignorant voters know just how well he and the Conservative Government are taking care of us. One might call this flood harassment, comparable to the pesky sales calls from India.

Our streets are safer because the perpetrators will be locked up for good–but not before they have made the streets unsafe. Our government is delivering tax relief for the suffering families in the upper 15 per cent income bracket. Four million hard-working families can soon enjoy an enhanced and expanded Universal Child Care Benefit.

While Mr. Kramp is wondering, after bragging with these remarkable achievements whether he is in the right track, I was wondering where that leaves poor little old me. The tough-on-crime legislation will be challenged in the SSC, income splitting is out of the question, and the kids have grown up.

So it was just in time that Daryl Kramp, Chair of Public Safety and National Security has caused the postal service to deliver a huge poster to my mailbox: Tax Time...Fact Time, to eliminate all my doubts about the wisdom of neo-conservative fiscal politics. There are potentially so many more goodies– exactly $56,850.00 worth, which are

begging to be picked up. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa! From now on I will make a conscious effort to not notice crumbling infrastructure, the underfunded and under-equipped Armed Forces, the cancellation of research laboratories, increased user fees for citizenship and passports, just to name a few.

I can, however, not ignore the ridiculous statement that we “continued to live within our means,” because $56,850.00 multiplied, looks like a lot of wasted government income. Just ask the Canada Revenue Agency, as Mr. Kramp suggests.

Dear Editor, My husband and I joined the Marmora Crowe Valley Lions Club in early 2012 and since this time we have seen more work done in this community than most people could even comprehend.

This work is being done by people who are very busy supporting families, and people who have already raised families and want to see a thriving community for their grandchildren and where our youth of Marmora would want to raise their families.

Through the various programs, the Lions Club raises and spends approximately $42,000 a year in this community. Many of our volunteers put in as many as 1,000 hours a year to these projects, some as few as 50 hours, but it all counts in the overall. Intergalactic pirates again Editorial - I really liked the furious debate that broke out recently among astronomers about whether we should send out signals to the universe saying “we’re here.” It implicitly assumes that somehow, if your science is really advanced, then interstellar travel is possible.

I like it because I Gwynne Dyer hate the idea that the human race will never be able to go beyond this little planetary system “far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy,” as Douglas Adams put it in his Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

We need somebody to do to Einstein’s physics what Einstein did to Newton’s. But while we’re waiting for that, it’s good to know that some quite grown-up scientists (astronomers, not physicists, admittedly, but I’ll take whatever I can get) think it’s worth having a debate about whether we should take the risk of letting all the aliens know we are here.

I missed the debate when it took place at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual conference in San Jose last month because I was on Mars at the time. (Well, somewhere that felt quite like Mars, anyway.) But here are a couple of quotes to give the flavour of it.

“Any society that could come here and ruin our whole day by incinerating the planet already knows we are here,” said Dr. Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer and Director at the Center for SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute in California.

Not so fast, said space scientist and sciencefiction writer David Brin. “The arrogance of shouting into the cosmos without any proper risk assessment defies belief. It is a course that would put our grandchildren at risk,” he said. If we send them messages, they may come here and enslave us. Or just eat us.

Now, the traditional way to shut this debate down is to point out that we’ve already been sending out radio and television signals for a hundred years. Therefore, any intergalactic pirates within a hundred light-years of here already know where we are. But it turns out that this isn’t actually true: our radio and television signals begin to fade into the background radio static beyond about one light-year away.

years away, there’s not much chance that the Klingons or Vogons or whoever you’re worried about knows we’re here yet. (And there goes the plot of Galaxy Quest.)

On the other hand, powerful radar signals of the kind that we have been using to map the surface of other planets and moons in our own system travel a very long way, and we’ve already been sending them out for over 20 years. They don’t carry much information–they just say “somebody here can generate microwave radiation”–but just that might be enough to attract unwelcome attention.

This new debate is actually about “active SETI.” We have been doing “passive SETI”–listening for messages from civilisations around other stars– for more than 40 years already, using large radio telescopes that can pick up very faint signals. But there are quite strict rules about who should reply if they do get a message.

The First Protocol, drafted by the International Academy of Astronautics SETI Panel in 1989, says that “no transmission in response to a signal or other evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence should be sent until appropriate international consultations have taken place.” But the advocates of “active SETI” want to scrap that and send out an “all call” to the universe.

One of the reasons the debate has got more heated is that we now know planets are as common as dirt. It’s only 20 years since the first confirmed discovery of an “exoplanet,” but now we know of 1,906 of them, mostly orbiting relatively nearby stars and a very small proportion showing Earthlike characteristics. (But the actual number of Earth-like planets may be much higher, since it’s a lot easier to find gas-giants like Jupiter or Saturn.)

There are probably hundreds of thousands of planets in our vicinity (there are 260,000 stars within 250 light-years). If even a mere few thousand of them are Earth-like, then it is imaginable that somebody might come calling in response to the messages we send–if, and only if, it is possible to travel at near- or trans-light speeds.

Nobody knows how light-speed travel could be done, and our current understanding of physics says that it can’t be done. But this would be a very silly debate if scientists were really all convinced that there is no possibility of getting around the current speed limit.

They will never say that it might be possible, because they cannot suggest how it might be done and the risk to their reputations would therefore be extreme. But they are quite happy to engage in a debate that would be totally irrelevant if they didn’t think there is a chance that we or some other civilisation in our galactic vicinity will eventually figure out how to do it. And that cheers me up considerably.

My MLB prediction: Jays end season in morgue

By Stephen Petrick Editorial - A few weeks ago I wrote in this space about the dysfunction of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Now I thought I’d pen my thoughts on the team that keeps Ontario sports fans miserable for the other six months of the year.

Normally this time of year I’m looking forward to the start of the Major League Baseball season, with hopes that the Toronto Blue Jays can finally end their playoff drought.

Not this year. Thanks to a Greek comedy-like sequence of blunders the Jays season is over before it has started.

It started in late February when newly acquired Canadian outfielder Michael Saunders tripped over a lawn sprinkler while fielding fly balls at the team’s spring training facility in Dunedin, Florida. It continued days later when their best pitcher, Marcus Stroman, suffered a season-ending injury during a bunt drill. Days later outfielder Kevin Pillar was shut down from baseball activities for a week when he injured himself from–wait for it– sneezing. Can’t make this stuff up.

Slugger Edwin Encarnacion, closer Brent Cecil and infielder Maicer Isturiz have also spent time on the disabled list during spring training. If the rest of the team can make it to September standing on two legs, the season should be considered a success.

So here’s my prediction on what else we can expect from the Jays in 2015.

The team’s best player, Jose Bautista, will miss time after poking himself in the eye with a straw during a Booster Juice commercial.

Newly acquired star catcher Russell Martin will miss the season after Quebec sovereignist rebels kidnap him during the team’s upcoming trip to his native Montreal. (They want to claim him as their own.) Jose Reyes catches an infection when a robin builds a nest in his long beard. New prized third baseman Josh Donaldson will injure himself when a stray R.A. Dickey knuckleball hits him in just

the wrong way. The entire bullpen ends of needing Tommy John surgery. By August, the whole team will say screw it and just head to Cancun.

That’s okay. Other teams will have problems this year too. New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, fresh off his year-long suspension for performance-enhancing drug use, will injure his legs while running away from a Manhattan media thong. And Boston Red Sox newly acquired slugger Pablo Sandoval will be put on the disabled list after the team realizes he’s 95 pounds overweight. (That’s a pound for every $1 million of his contract.)

In the National League, all teams other than the Los Angeles Dodgers will cease to exist after the LA ownership buys every single player, just to ensure they win a league title. Then they’ll lose in the World Series to the American League winning Kansas City Royals, who are in the final for a second straight year, despite having one of baseball’s lowest payrolls.

On a serious note, more than a few people have asked me why I love baseball so much since, to many, it’s more boring than watching paint dry. There’s numerous answers to that question, and I won’t get to them all here. But one thing I’ll say is that to be a baseball fan, you don’t have to watch every game, every inning, or every pitch. The six-month-long MLB season plays out like a romantic-comedy sitcom. It involves countless storylines, dramatic moments that interrupt dullness and unpredictable ups and downs.

The Jays are more likely to end the season in the morgue than as World Series champs but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun watching, laughing or crying all season long.

The summer will still bring plenty of towering home runs and collisions at home plate. Hopefully, Canada’s lone team will be competitive or, at least, entertaining. Let’s just hope no one else sneezes.

Lifestyles - Madoc Township - Interest in the first annual maple syrup harvest at Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hara Mill Homestead and Conservation Area in Madoc Township was overwhelming according to volunteer reports.

The sale of a pancake and sausage luncheon may have been part of the draw, serving real maple syrup from local producers Stephen and Heather Needamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hara Sugar Maples.

The Needhams also brought in their collection of pioneer tools used for harvesting sap in the 1850s. Three teams of horses drew sleds full of visitors past boiling pots into the forest, March 28 and 29, as part of weekend activities.

Hot cider and chocolate, heating over a fire outside the cabin awaited their return, with a warm hearth inside to take off the chill.

Down the hill, between the old school and visitorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centre, diners were entertained by four bands over the weekend, gathered around another open fire. They seemed a hearty lot, musicians, volunteers and visitors alike, undeterred by Canadian weather.

Though the mornings were cold, the sun shone brightly, making a perfect day for travellers to visit from Bancroft, Belleville, points beyond and between.

Marty McGrath of the Ministry of Natural Resources spoke on the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP). He advised that managed forestlands in Ontario may qualify for The Ministry of Natural Resources’ (MNR) program. Woodlot owners may find their annual taxes reduced by as much as 75 per cent on the woodlot being submitted for consideration. Many applicants realize costs incurred through the application process are sometimes recovered in the first year, as taxes are reduced. Joey is a very handsome black lad. He was abandoned before Christmas of 2014. Joey was very thin when he was rescued and brought to us.

He has now regained his weight and looks great. Joey likes other cats and small dogs (I’m sure he would be fine with any dog when introduced properly) Joey is very sweet and loving. He likes to play and be up high so he can see everything that is going on around him. Joey loves his treats.

Susan Chan, pollination biologist, is an independent researcher with a special interest in the native squash bee, and is concerned about the effects of insecticides upon the health and stability of the pollination system. She manages the Native Pollinator Program for Farms at Work, a not-for-profit charitable project of Tides Canada which promotes good stewardship and best management practices.

The bees feed on the nectar of the trees’ flowers, and this is then passed on to the bee larvae, causing a decline in population of the bees when insecticides are involved. In managed woodlots, the areas of a forest that are harvested are replaced with the “fade” or area surrounding the edges of the remaining growth. Raspberries are the most familiar re-growth in the newly opened areas, and of course, open meadows produce

News - Marmora - The spring event of the Upper Trent Valley Woodlot Association was held in Marmora over the past weekend.

A full day of activities included three speakers, several exhibitors, and the annual meeting.

President Pauline Wilkins says, “The Upper Trent Valley Chapter of the Ontario Woodlot Association has been in existence for many years, giving chapter members the opportunity to meet and share views with other woodlot owners, especially at the spring and fall workshops, when speakers are invited to discuss a variety of topics that our members have asked for.”

Subjects covered included attracting wildlife, value of encouraging bees, maple syrup from small woodlots, and managed forest tax incentive plan.

Director Eileen Quinn said with a smile.

Quinn said the bed senses needs of the individual and has a special cover to remove moisture. It can be programmed to firm or soft, to rise, fall, and tilt, with a varying cycle from three to ninety minutes for maximum comfort.

hospitals serving local residents.

They also provide $500 for bursaries to two local high school students majoring in history, and to “Leave the Streets Behind” bursary of Toronto.

March council meeting notes News - Tweed - Remuneration to the mayor and council were among items tabled at council’s March meeting. The 2014 salary figures made public under the Municipal Act reveal that Mayor JoAnne Albert was paid $13,780.26, Deputy-mayor Brian Treanor $10,335.26, Councillor Justin Bray $8,480.16, Councillor Don DeGenova $9,186. 84, Councillor James Flieler $9,186.84 and newly elected Councillor Jamie DeMarsh $765.57. Expenses paid were in the $4,000 to $5,000 range with the exception of Councillor Justin Bray who received $7,110.22.

In his report Councillor Don DeGenova expressed concern about financial pressures affecting the Land O’ Lakes Curling Club, particularly hydro costs. He continues to be involved with the business expansion project.

Council approved two recommendations in the Public Works Manager’s report to issue a payment certificate to Crain’s Construction for the replacement of the Bogart Bridge and to extend the current snowplowing contract for one year with no R0013210425

News - Madoc - Each year, Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion receives applications for assistance through their charitable fund from service agencies across the province.

This year the Madoc region has received two large amounts for both the fire department and the Heart of Hastings Hospice to purchase medical equipment.

Since 2004 the Centre Hastings fire department has received $58,698 with which they purchased six defibrillators, ten first aid kits, 11 medical trauma kits, ten oxygen trauma kits, an ice water rescue sled, a thermal imaging camera, and now, with a grant of $3,691 they have ten oximeters, to test for oxygen in the blood, and two more defibrillators.

Chief Medical Officer Beth McBeath said ongoing support of the Royal Canadian Legion Command has been overwhelming.

“This equipment makes our job easier once on the scene. It is so important to have the right tools. The Legion has

Municipality hosts flood preparation open house

Over two dozen people attended a recent open house on flood preparation hosted by the municipality. Representatives of the “Control Group” which manages emergency response on county and municipal levels offered printed information and tips on flood preparedness. News - Tweed - Flood preparations and frustration with the provincial flood relief assistance program were two issues highlighted at council’s March meeting. Deputy-mayor Brian Treanor mentioned concerns he had heard from elderly people needing help dealing with flooding.

Mayor Jo-Anne Albert suggested contacting Volunteer Quinte. Based on advice from the county, “That’s probably their best bet,” she advised. In an ensuing discussion about insurance liabilities involved with recruiting volunteers, Albert remarked, “I think there’s a way around it. We’ve got to talk about this more.”

Noting a QWS memo on the topic of “orange boxes” for hazardous and electronic waste, Councillor DeGenova explained they were meant to be kept at home to store such waste until designated collection days, and suggested

Keene noted that Quinte Conservation and Hastings Emergency Management “just advises and reports. We provide them with knowledge of what’s happening.” Quinte Conservation in concert with the provincial and federal governments monitors seven gauges on the Moira River system.

“We do a lot of our own internal modelling. We have a computer model that predicts the depth in millimetres of runoff, based on forecast temperatures and precipitation,” Mr. Keene advised.

Community Services Officer Alana Deubel of the Central Hastings Detachment of the OPP was “personally not much involved” with the previous year’s floods but observed that “We have a marine unit with a boat on Stoco Lake to check on residents’ wellbeing.” The OPP were involved in traffic management on flooded provincial highways, notably on a section of Highway 62. “We offer Spring Water Safety [presentations] in schools,” said Deubel. “You have cold, fast-moving water and

Evaluating the success of the response to last spring’s flooding, Bryon Keene, Water Resources Manager for Quinte Conservation, observed that municipalities bear the greatest responsibility.

“Last year every municipality responded the way they had planned.

We certainly were in communication with them all, but the public really are the ones to judge, based on what

the municipality distribute and use them.

The committee has asked staff to create a streetlight cost comparison on the effect of switching to LED lights and to generate a hydro cost comparison on municipal buildings.

“I told him that it is impossible. We have tried everything except going out and forcing people to be on a committee.

I don’t think I should put my name to any agreement I don’t agree with … we waited and waited, they can wait for us.”

Regarding the $60,000 figure, “That’s the first time I’ve seen that and I was shocked,” Albert stated.

“So we would have to fundraise,” responded Deputy-mayor Treanor.

Councillor Jim Flieler said, “They’re not showing the people due diligence.

They’re dragging their heels … to get that 60,000 bucks we’ve got to raise $20,000 or

we have had calls about kids out on creeks. We’ve been speaking to school classes and parents.”

Leanne Latter, Emergency Management Co-ordinator for Hastings County brought pamphlets and displays of flood preparation materials and procedures.

“I think things went well [last spring]. It was a huge deal. We had three municipalities declare a state of emergency and two others activated their emergency plans. We don’t declare a state of emergency but we try to co-ordinate when there’s a multi-municipality emergency. Speaking from a county perspective, I think it was very wellmanaged.” She thought the open house was “fantastic. Anything you can do to get information out and increase public education and awareness is important.”

About two dozen members of the public visited the two-hour-long open house and Acting CAO/Clerk Betty Gallagher said she was pleased with the public turnout. “I feel it was a success and the consensus seemed to be that we won’t experience such serious flooding again this year.”

News - Tweed - “It was very tough for our department last year,” said Public Works Manager Al Broek.

He was discussing last spring’s severe flooding at a recent open house aimed at preparing residents for future floods. “We had long hours, numerous flooded roads, having to deliver sand and sand bags to various locations. It was a very tough time.”

As was the case last year, sand will again be stockpiled at the Marlbank Road Public Works site, as well as at Actinolite and in the village.

“If we get calls we take sand [to residents] but we don’t have the resources to take sand to everybody.

We have thousands of sand bags and sand, but the big thing is the proper filling of the bags and the use of plastic vapour barriers.”

Considering flood dangers this season, Broek said, “The biggest worry is an ice jam, if it gets up against the bridge abutments. We had a bit last year and had to use excavators to clear them.”

Harmonica giant wows Tweedsmuir crowd

Entertainment - Tweed - A sizeable crowd of music lovers gladly paid the $25 cover charge recently to hear legendary harp player Carlos del Junco and his band, the Blues Mongrels, perform at the Tweedsmuir Tavern. The Cubanborne musician built his career in Toronto and has lived in Port Hope for the past eight years. With sidemen Eric St. Laurent on guitar and Henry Heillig on bass, del Junco takes audiences into the realms of blues and jazz and beyond into mesmerizing, at times almost free-form improvisation.

Carlos del Junco is an eight-time winner of the Maple Blues Harmonica Player of the Year Award. He has several JUNO nominated recordings and a raft of awards including Now Magazine’s Blues Award for 2005 and two gold medals from the Hohner World Harmonica Championship in Germany.

His style has been called “simultaneously sophisticated and raw, blurring the boundaries between blues and jazz.”

“I started out primarily in the blues scene,” he comments. “Now what I do, it’s roots music that sort of delves into the jazzier side of blues. It’s still kind of blues-based. Half of the stuff we do is instrumental, sort of very funarranged tunes. The vocal stuff is the more straight-ahead blues stuff.” This performance is del Junco’s third visit to Tweed, the first time appearing with

Valdy and the other two times with his band.

Carlos appreciates the warm reception and appreciative audiences he finds in Tweed and also likes playing the festival circuit but “you need a new product for that. So until I get another record out … I’ve certainly played for about every jazz and blues festival in Canada and a lot of folk festivals too. Because what I do is very eclectic I get to cross borders, musically speaking.”

Carlos del Junco is reputed to have mastered harmonica techniques which few others have and he discusses his instrument. “For the lay people who don’t play an instrument, everyone knows what a piano looks like. When you have a little ten hole, what they call a diatonic harmonica–that’s the one that Bob Dylan plays–it’s like having the white notes on the piano at your disposal. Intermission was complemented by a small troupe of ballet dancers from the Madoc School of Dance Arts, dressed in purple tutus, full of energy and willing to please the audience.

Board of directors chair Curt Brinkman encouraged the audience to spread the word about CHSN. “We are now in the old medical centre, right beside the Kiwanis, and we have plenty of office space for other service agencies.”

Brinkman said the agency is hoping to rent out the remaining office areas and will be partnering with the Kiwanis Club to create a community garden in the green space between the buildings.

Friends of Stirling support local library

News - Stirling - The Friends of Stirling, a local charitable organization that has supported community and sports programs for more than 20 years, includes the Stirling-Rawdon Public Library on its long list of benefactors and recently pledged to donate $1,000 to the institution.

Friends representative Caragh O’Neill-Lewis stopped at the library last week to present a cheque for $500 to Chief Librarian Sue Winfield. Another cheque for the same amount will be delivered in the coming months. Winfield says in light of recent budget cuts the do-

nation is a timely one and will provide some additional help that is badly needed.

“We really appreciate this,” she said.

The funds raised by the Friends of Stirling are primarily derived from an annual golf tournament hosted at Oak Hills Golf Club, explains O’NeillLewis, and plans are currently under way for the 2015 event, scheduled for August 21. The day includes friendly competition on the course, prizes, raffles, live and silent auctions as well as dinner and opportunities to socialize with many other friends of the Friends of

Stirling. And once again this year, the proceeds will go to organizations and programs in the immediate area and organizers are accepting submissions from any groups in need of support. In the past, and with generous help from sponsors, supporters and regular participants, the Friends have contributed to dozens of different causes over the years and O’Neill-Lewis says there are no plans of slowing down.

Marmora Girl Guides host fundraising craft fair for July trip

News - Marmora - Saturday, March 28, the Girl Guides and Pathfinders at Marmora were joined with several crafts vendors at the Marmora Legion to present a varied selection of handmade crafts, foods, and services during their second annual Craft Show. This event highlighted one of the fundraising efforts by the 1st Marmora Guides as they prepare for the Alberta outing in July for ten of the girls with their leaders and chaperones. Of course, the famous Girl Guide Cookies were featured front and centre.

Further fundraising will include a viewing of the new movie Home at Trenton Theatre, (tickets available through Barb Davies, 613-243-9609), Guides and Pathfinders gathered at the Marmora Legion for their second annual fundraising Craft Show. After arriving in Calgary, the itinerary will include the Calgary Zoo, opening day of the Calgary Stampede, a stay at Banff, and a camp out at Red Deer, the Hoodoos and Dinosaur Museum at Drumheller, and then further to Edmonton where the Guides will visit the 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Army Edmonton, West Edmonton Mall, and the Telus World Science Centre.

Further activities for the girls will include “Pitch In Canada” from April 19 to May 2, and the weekly Tuesday gatherings at the Marmora Community Centre above the arena.

Sports - Stirling - Last weekend marked the 25th consecutive year that the Skins Bonspiel has taken place in Stirling.

International Truckload Service of Belleville, title sponsor this year, along with more than 60 other sponsors, helped make the Skins in Stirling the premier menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bonspiel of the year.

A total of 24 teams from across Ontario and New York State flocked to Stirling in search of the big prize being offered at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bonspiel. Because of huge generosity from the community and surrounding area, Stirling Curling Club was able to offer the largest cash purse in the area this season. The ITS Skins was able to provide, for the second year in a row, a total cash purse of $10,244 for the weekend. The lucky team that made it to the A Event final would be playing for $200 per end or skin.

The 24-team field began Friday evening using the skins format.

Each team is on the offence at all times; defence is very rarely used.

It is great to watch that many rocks in play and it always comes down to a teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last rock of each end before the skin can be decided.

There is very rarely a shot to be made to take the skin. The team

without last rock only needs to score a point, while the team with last rock must score two or more points to get the skin. If this does not happen then the end is carried over at which time the nerves can get quite stretched because each shot could decide the game. A three-game qualifying round was held on Friday night and Saturday.

Sports - Tweed - On the way to their Midget OMHA Championship the Hawks showed amazing tenacity as well as top quality hockey skills. The Hawks were in a strong position going into the

finals with no losses and two ties in their regular season. They dealt handily with the Bancroft Jets in their quarter-final series, but then hit a bump, dropping their first two semi-final home games to the Wasaga Beach Stars.

Sports - Madoc - It was an exciting finish to the 2014-2015 season for the McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Atom A Grizzlies. The team travelled to Mount Forest on Sunday, March 29, after staging an impressive comeback to tie the CC OMHA final series at two. The Grizzlies worked hard throughout all three periods but could not seem to catch a break on the scoreboard.

Numerous times the puck travelled along the goal line or deflected off the posts but the Grizzlies could not put one in the net.

The teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defenders played an outstanding game and Anna Belle Phillips allowed only one goal as she turned aside numerous scoring attempts by the Mount Forest Rams.

Leonard summarized his teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our team fought hard to make an All-Ontario CC final and then somehow tied the series after losing the two opening games. The coaching staff and parents couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be more proud of this group of nine- and tenyear-olds. We allowed only two goals in the final three games, but still lost the series. You have to be proud of the fact that we never gave up and we showed a ton of class and character throughout the playoffs. A big huge thank you to all the fans who made the trip to Mount Forest to cheer us on. The Grizzlies association has a lot to be proud of.â&#x20AC;?

Even though the team dropped a 4 - 2 decision to South West in game five of the series, the players showed true grit by pushing through adversity and numerous challenges. Captain Karsten Leonard opened the scoring for Centre Hastings in the first period when he unleashed a slap shot from the blue line that the South West goalie could not handle.

Stirling skaters wrap up season with Showcase

Sports - Stirling - In the last big event before the ice was removed from the Stirling arena, hundreds of spectators arrived to see the entire membership of the Stirling Figure Skating Club congregate for the yearend Showcase.

Officials and volunteers were kept busy throughout the afternoon last Friday as more than 80 skaters took to the ice in a series of programs highlighting the skills of athletes ranging from the youngest of skaters to the most experienced competitors.

Club President Joanne Card was extremely pleased with attendance at the event, which offered free admission but asked for donations to the food bank, as well as the generosity of those in the crowd who helped fill a table with food and household products. Nearby, a small stage with a star-themed backdrop was set up for participant photographs following the pre-

sentation of various medals.

The 2014-2015 Showcase provided an opportunity for skaters to show friends and family the skills they have learned throughout the season, Card says, and the crowds had plenty of applause for the on-ice performers. Individual routines from skaters Shirley Deck, Elaine Jeffs, Shelby Holmes, Mackenna Dunkley, Madison Myers, Jamie Potts, Katie Steele, Chloe Choinard, Grace Duncan, Courtney LaPalm, Renada Barnable, Mackenzie Lapierre, Amber Orr, Julianna Cooney, Madelyn Thompson and Jacqueline Foley were presented along with duets by Emily Parliament and Natasha Moore, Alexis Stewart and Isabella Rosborough, and Avery Scriver and Brooklyn Moffatt as well as several other larger group performances.

With the help of some of the senior skaters, younger members of the club were also featured and provided many

memorable moments during the show. Also recognized for their support were coaches Leanne Rosborough, Sarah Carlisle, Kandis Kelly and Lindsay Newberry as well as power skating coaches Jason LaPalm and Nick Myers.

Club members and guests had plenty to celebrate this season with many notable achievements at various competitions including a pair of medals earned at provincials by skaters Madison Myers and Chloe Choinard. The club also hosted its first Special Olympics qualifier during the 2014-2015 season as well as a visit by Kurt Browning and Doug Haw offering tips to dozens of skaters.

And while the skating is over in Stirling, the club is currently preparing for its Potluck Banquet and annual general meeting, scheduled for Sunday, April 19, beginning at noon.

Arena Manager Richard Dean was impressed by both the attendance and the show

provided by the participants, noting it was a fitting way to wrap up the season.

With the ice on its way out, he says, arena officials are

now preparing for a range of summer activities including sports and community events and a pair of upcoming municipal trade shows.

Vet clinic receives training to care for injured turtles

News - Belleville - For turtles, nesting season is around the corner and that often comes with deadly consequences.

The sight of injured or dead turtles on the sides of roads is common in May and June, as female turtles often cross roads in the spring to find dry sand to lay eggs in, only to be hit by cars. Fortunately, for friends of the hard-shelled species, a Belleville veterinary clinic has formed a partnership with the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre that will hopefully save some turtle lives. It’s an important step because seven of eight turtle species found in Ontario are considered at risk and one of the biggest threats to their existence is road deaths, said Sue Carstairs, the executive director of the Trauma Centre. Carstairs visited Bay Regional Veterinary Hospital in eastend Belleville on Thursday, March 25, to train two vets, Dr. Linda Hack and Dr. Naomi Scromeda, on how to treat injured turtles. Now, the vet clinic can take in injured turtles (at no cost) and give them basic treatments before delivering them to the Trauma Centre, located just outside Peterborough.

Scromeda and Hack said they found the training interesting and hope they can contribute to preserving turtle species this summer. They feel it will benefit turtle lovers in Belleville, who may not be able to take an injured turtle up to the Trauma Centre directly. One of the messages all three women want to get out is that turtles are worth saving, even if they seem close to death. “They can recover from things that no other species can,” said Carstairs. They pointed out that as long as there’s a head to turtle, there’s a chance it can be saved. And even if the turtle is dead, it’s still worth bringing in, as eggs from a dead female can sometimes still be harvested.

Castleton couple lands another award for kale chip business

News - Colborne - It’s been one award after another the past three months for Adrian and Draupadi Quinn.

It all began last December when the couple won the Premier Award for AgriFood Innovations for growing kale and turning the leaves into air-dried chips high in fibre at their Kaley Acres farm near Castleton.

Since then Brandneu Foods Canada Inc., the grassroots company they created in 2014 with Ecoideas Innovations Inc., in Markham, to produce and distribute the chips across Canada and into the United States, has collected three more awards.

Northumberland County was the first to honour them locally. The Town of Cobourg and Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce followed suit early in March, and, last Friday, Cramahe Township made it three in a row by naming Brandneu Foods the municipality’s best new business at its Business Achievement Awards.

“Out of all the awards they’ve won this has to be the most recent,” Mayor Marc Coombs quipped in making the announcement at the Ontario Agri-Food Venture Centre in Colborne.

“These folks have come a long way,” winning awards at the regional and provincial level, Northumberland-Quinte West MPP Lou Rinaldi said. “That’s something to be proud of.”

Foods, said he and his wife were “honoured and a little shocked and in disbelief to be getting so much acknowledgment for kale.” They never imagined that was in their future when, “a little bit crazy,” they bought a “semi-derelict” former tobacco farm in 2010, during “tough economic times.”

Their venture grew into Brandneu Foods, which now operates out of a

70,000-square-foot building in Cobourg and manufactures 12 flavours of nutrientrich kale chips.

“It’s very exciting times,” Quinn said of the rapid expansion his company has enjoyed to meet demand.

Last year it planted kale on 48 acres with the help of local farmers, and “we’re increasing that by 50 per cent this year,” he said, and the plan is to have “at least a

thousand acres” in production by 2019.

“Northumberland will begin feeding the world kale.”

Its success has been largely thanks to the employees, said Quinn, who pointed out they have been working six days a week to fill a big order from Bulk Barn.

The couple started out with Kokimo Candles, which is currently “in the middle of a facelift” in advance of its 20th

anniversary next year.

Quinn welcomed the advent of the Ontario Agri-Food Venture Centre, saying it will help his company diversify into other commodities and products.

“We don’t have space to develop those formulations in our own facilities,” he said. “We’re going to be doing a lot of work here with some of the new products [being planned].”

Agri-food Venture Centre given more funding as opening day approaches

News - Colborne - The Ontario AgriFood Venture Centre, just weeks away from opening its doors for business, has received an additional $225,000 in funding from the federal government.

Northumberland-Quinte West MP Rick Norlock, who made the announcement at the centre March 27, said the money is being provided by a network of Community Futures Development Corporations in eastern Ontario who “see the value” of a niche food small batch processing facility for vegetable and fruit growers in the region.

The grant, made available through the Eastern Ontario Development Program Collaborative Projects stream, raises

the total amount the corporations have provided for the project to almost a halfmillion dollars, Norlock said.

Northumberland County director of economic development and tourism Dan Borowec said the “pay-to-play” facility in Colborne’s industrial park ”will help in many ways create second-source income” for farmers” by acting as “a launchpad” for new ventures.

“We’ve been at this for almost five years,” beginning with the research and the development that went into preparing a proposal that all levels of government and the community supported, he said.

The 15,000-square-foot facility, the only one of its kind in the province, has been designed to process, freeze,

refrigerate, store, package and test foods as well as provide business support and educational and meeting space.

“We’ve been entertaining about a half-dozen requests on a daily basis,” from prospective clients, Borowec said, and conducting tours twice a day for individuals interested in using the facility.

Most of them when they leave “are very much in awe of what they can do,” he added.

Borowec said the centre has drawn attention from numerous entrepreneurs looking to “launch a product without losing their homes or investing everything they have in an idea.”

Partners include post-secondary

institutions such as Loyalist College and the Business Advisory Centre of Northumberland that can give them the support they need to get their plans off the ground.

The total cost of the centre “is about $2.2 million, of which 50 per cent has come from federal and provincial sources,” Borowec said in an interview.

Defence minister speaks to local Tories News - Norwood - Federal Defence Minister Jason Kenney met with Peterborough federal Conservative hopeful Michael Skinner during a party function at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre hosted by Northumberland-Peterborough South Tory candidate Adam Moulton.

Moulton received strong backing from Kenney during his bid to win the newly minted riding’s Conservative federal candidacy.

Moulton, 24, defeated former prime minister Brian Mulroney aide Paul Smith for the nomination and will face Kim Rudd (Liberal) and Russ Christianson (NDP) in the next

federal election.

The riding was created in 2012 during the federal electoral boundaries redistribution and now includes Asphodel-Norwood and Otonabee South Monaghan.

Michael Skinner is seeking the Conservative nomination in Peterborough riding.

The party has been without a candidate since the resignation of Dean Del Mastro.

During the Norwood meeting Kenney offered partisan support to party members extolling the virtues of the federal government.

Truth is, this war is going to cost us all very dearly

Dear Editor, One hundred and twenty two million loonies. $122 million.

I have a hard time wrapping my mind around such a big number. I have an even harder time imagining what my world

would be like if that amount suddenly landed in my bank account. Since I never buy lottery tickets odds of it happening are zero. However, I do wonder what 122 million loonies in a pile would actually look like.

Here is some multiplication and division to help develop that mental picture. Ten loonies stacked up are two centimetres high. In 122 million there would be 12,200,000 stacks of ten loonies. Times two centimetres

gives you 24,400,000 centimetres. Divide that by 100 centimetres and you get 244,000 metres. The CN Tower in Toronto is 553 meters high. So, if you had 122 million loonies, and stacked them as high as the CN

The numbers game Dear Editor, A couple of weeks ago I pointed out that since the Liberal government came to power, the number of people on the provincial payroll being paid in excess of $100,000 per year had increased from 12,000 in 2003 to 88,000 in 2013. The figures are in for 2014 and the number has increased to over 111,000, an obscene 26 per cent increase in one year. I have read that Premier Kathleen Wynne and her finance minister are on top of this problem. I suspect the province will declare bankruptcy long before they do anything about it. I am also a little confused over numbers. If we only have had 1.5 per cent increases, how come my taxes went up by a substantially larger number?

There was talk of a 5.46 per cent increase, which seems to have been reduced to 4.88 per cent. Councillor Fred Kuypers is calling for a maximum of 2.5 per cent and Councillor Jim Alyea says, “4.88 per cent is too high.” They are both right.

Clinic launches new Low Back Pain Project

Our Defence Minister Jason Kenney stated $122 million is the number of our tax dollars which Stephen Harper spent bombing Iraq for the last six months. Kenney’s claim was challenged by the Parliamentary Budget Officer Jean-Denis Fréchette, who put the cost of the mission between $129 million and $166 million. The Parliamentary Budget Office is extrapolating costs because the Department of Defence refuses to give them any information. However, some mathematical realists at The Ottawa Citizen made “estimates derived from publicly available information about the number of sorties and departmental operating cost estimates of the different aircraft, including full costs of personnel salaries, general maintenance and equipment depreciation and came up with a full-cost of the six-month mission of between $178 million and $266 million taxpayer dollars.” Whatever the real number is one could build at least 441 piles of loonies as high as the CN Tower … or perhaps 800. Add the new year-long commitment to war Harper just made for us and we are likely up to 2,400.

When listening to the Harper Government so transparently telling us what we are paying to bomb foreigners, innocents and religious lunatics alike, remember these are the same guys who lied to us about the cost of buying those F-35 stealth fighter jets Harper wanted so badly back in 2011. Defense Minister Peter McKay told us $14.7 billion would buy them just before the 2011 election. Parliamentary Budget Officer Kevin Page told us $30 billion was the more realistic price tag. Kevin was soon out of a job. Auditor General Michael Ferguson consequently backed Kevin Page up with a $25 billion estimate. Conservatives

had to know what they were telling Canadians was a $10 billion lie. Can’t imagine that pile of loonies.

So why will anyone believe Harper’s Finance Minister Joe Oliver when he hands down a balanced budget sometime in April as part of the Conservatives’ delusional propaganda for the 2015 election?

Since gaining majority government power Harper has bent every environmental assessment rule and silenced every scientist while castigating anyone who stands in his way to sell all of the oil in Fort McMurray to the Chinese as fast as he can. Then the sheiks in the part of our planet Harper likes to bomb decided it was time to teach him a lesson in economic warfare. Oil is at $46 a barrel today and Conservative Alberta is fast being brought to its knees. Obviously incapable of controlling the Canadian economy and knowing that no wartime President of the United States has ever been voted out of office Harper takes us to war. Six months has just turned into another year. A year will turn into two … or ten like Afghanistan. Billions of our loonies will fall into the black hole called war.

For Joe Oliver to balance Harper’s budget for his 2015 election propaganda the provinces must get less cash. Provinces then cut transfers to municipalities after recently dumping all of the old provincial highways and other former provincial responsibilities on them. Toronto infrastructure crumbles. Stirling Council just slashed another $11,000 from our Library budget.

The buck stops here. Trickle down economics indeed.

Ducks Unlimited hosting 30th anniversary dinner and charity auction

News - Campbellford - What do an ornamental fire hydrant, grizzly bear sculpture, Savage shotgun/22Cal rifle, a flying waterfowl bench and a fire pit have in common?

These are just some of items among the dozens being featured at the 30th annual Wetlands Conservation Dinner and Charity Auction being hosted by the Campbellford Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC).

“The night will be filled with a silent auction, the sounds of a live auction and a mystery prize will add to the excitement,” said Jeff Weaver, who along with Wayne Buck, is a founder of the local chapter.

And to celebrate the 30th anniversary, he and Cathy Stephen, chair of the event

for the second year in a row, have plenty planned for a fun evening.

“We’re earmarking the 30th celebration with something special,” said Weaver.

“Our dress code theme this year will be ‘camo’ [camouflage] clothing,” he said with a big grin, all decked out in his camouflage outfit that he will be sporting that night.

Referencing the TV reality show Duck Dynasty, he talked about the growing popularity of “camo” clothing.

“It is becoming quite trendy. “ “Camo is something different and it allows those that do hunt to dress in the camouflage clothing although we also have a lot of non-hunting people who don’t need to wear camo outfits,” he added.

“To add to the night’s fun there

will be a prize for the best dressed camo outfit,” Weaver commented.

A duck and goose call set which features Buck Gardner calls, one mallard and one gander, and features the Ducks Unlimited logo, will be included in the auction.

In the 30 years the dinner and charity auction has been held the club has raised more than $487,000.

“We’re hoping to top the $500,000 mark,” Weaver said.

“And we will be having bigger door prizes this year, including a 22 calibre gun,” said Stephen.

Guns have always been a big draw for the club’s event, bringing people from miles around.

“The silent and live auction, raffles and door prizes are all part of the fun.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. for an “attitude adjustment” hour when the silent auction takes place. Dinner is a 7 p.m. and is being catered by Betty Wickman who has been cooking up a popular “smorgasbord of roast beef, chicken and turkey,” for the event for the past 15 years.

The $40 ticket includes a membership and the publication “Ducks Ontario.”

The Campbellford chapter has anywhere from 175 to 300 members any given year and new members are always welcome.

“The bottom line for all of us is the environment and conservation,” said Weaver.

The club uses its money to protect wetlands for future generations.

The dinner and charity auction takes place Saturday, April 18, at the curling club.

Lifestyles - Back in February, when we were facing a steady dose of bitterly cold weather and steady snowfalls, I wondered to myself if we’d ever see spring this year, but it has, indeed, arrived. The snowdrifts have finally subsided, the robins have returned, the maple syrup is running, and the annual tulip festivals are about to flourish.

At this special time of year, my thoughts always drift back to my past spring visit to the Netherlands, where I journeyed through one of the most magnificent displays of tulips to be found anywhere in the world,

Tiptoeing through the tulips offer displays of such varieties as azaleas, orchids, and lilies.

For example, I happened to be in the Willem-Alexander Pavilion at the time of its presentation of the world’s largest lily show, and I also visited the Juliana Pavilion where I found a fascinating history of the tulip, the Bulb Information Pavilion, the Beatrix Pavilion with its several varieties of orchids, Azalea Lane, Beech Tree Lane, Japanese Garden, Natural Garden, Inspiration Gardens, Zocher Garden with its stepping stones within a pond, Keukenhof Castle with its art exhibition, Children’s Paradise Inside the Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands. with its playground, maze, and City,” and it puts on a really big place between May 2 and 9, and show, with a great variety of you can expect to find lots of parades and events. The above tulip festivals are all worthwhile destinations, but, of course, we don’t have to journey far away at all to enjoy springtime tulips. After all, our very own “Canadian Tulip Festival” takes place in nearby Ottawa, and this year’s festivities occur between May 8 and May 18. Many of us are already familiar with the fascinating historical details that led to the “Gift of Tulips”; in the fall of 1945 Princess Juliana of the Netherlands presented Ottawa with 100,000 tulip bulbs, a gift that was given in appreciation of the safe haven members of the exiled royal family received in Ottawa during World War

II and in recognition of the role which Canadian troops played in the liberation of the Netherlands. Since that time, the tulips have proliferated in Ottawa, and they now serve as a symbol of peace, freedom, and international friendship.

If you do decide to take in our major tulip festival this year, I’d recommend a drive along the designated “Tulip Route,” which connects several national institutions through Ottawa and Gatineau. And one of my favourite ways to see these tulips, in past years, has simply been to cycle along the area’s magnificent paved recreational paths. I’ve had the good fortune to ride on all these interconnected trails, and I’ve found them to be a great addition to our capital city and a great way to view those stunning tulips.

If you want to experience a large tulip festival out of our country but closer to home, I’d recommend two U.S. destinations. Washington State’s “Skagit Valley Tulip Festival” runs through the entire month of April, and it offers over 300 acres of brightly coloured tulips in the northwest corner of the state, near the British Columbia border. It’s said that “more tulip, iris, and daffodil bulbs are produced here than in any other county in the U.S.,” and a visit here will provide you with inspirational views of these spring flowers. You can enjoy a drive by the fields for free, but I’d recommend stopping at both Roozen Gaarde and Tulip Town, the beautiful display gardens.

Closer to home, I’d recommend a visit to Holland, Michigan. This rather small Dutch settlement to the west of us is often referred to as “Tulip

in the Keukenhof Gardens. After all, this destination in Lisse, near Amsterdam, is known as “The Garden of Europe,” and it has been said to be “the most beautiful spring garden in the world.” Millions of tulips are planted within this 32-hectare park every year, and I was able to enjoy the incredible floral display by simply walking along some of the destination’s 15 kilometres of footpaths. I was also able to get a better appreciation of the entire area by cycling through the region, past the nearby fields of tulips in full bloom. What an incredible sight.

This year’s “Keukenhof Tulip Festival” is already in progress, for it runs from March 20 to May 17, and it features about a thousand varieties of tulips.

You’ll also find spectacular displays of other spring flowers here, too, including crocuses, hyacinths, and daffodils. There are also beautiful shrubs, statues, waterfalls, lakes, fountains, artistic works, and pavilions on this property, and the pavilions

Dan Clost Lifestyles - Gentle Reader, I had decided to write a column about our Canadian farmers and in my opinion, the unfair and unfounded negative publicity they were enduring. The latest issue is the bees. The uproar about the specific type of pesticide being used to treat seeds in some crops was the tipping point. There is no argument on anybody’s part that pesticides kill bees and other insects; that’s their purpose. However, it ain’t necessarily the “neocons” that are causing the problems.

As you might imagine, the North American gardening press is all over this topic; it is absolutely astonishing the disparity between the learned opinions being put forth both on the Internet listserves and in their various publications. Similar to what you’re

Do take a moment to investigate both his credentials and any motivations he might have to write this article.

One last comment on bees and this is purely speculative on my part. What is the correlation, in Canada for sure and in many other parts of the world, anecdotally gathered from other garden writers’ comments, that the areas where the bees are enduring the most difficult times in both Colony Collapse Disorder (simply put: the foragers leave the hive and don’t come back) and bee death, are those that are the most heavily populated and industrialised?

Currently, there are television ads, which talk about a restaurant chain using 100 per cent Canadian beef that is hormone free. The two implications are 1.) Other restaurants don’t; and 2.)

Not all Canadian beef is hormone free.

If you go to their website (A&W) you’ll note that this disclaimer “Our 100% Pure Beef Guarantee means that all of our beef is raised without any added hormones or steroids …) Folks, I have nothing against A&W and I think their campaign is true and effective. You can also go to McDonald’s website and read From Beef to Burger.

The challenge with this type of advertising is that many Canadians (who

I think are clever, intelligent and wellmeaning folk) just don’t know enough about agriculture and farming. There can be little discernment when there is little knowledge. I think it would be great if the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) got on board with national campaigns to explain just how good and safe our food is.

GR, long-time readers of this column know that I worry about the loss of connection between ourselves and this good earth which sustains us. I approach it from the perspective of gardening, which today means horticulture more than agriculture, although I try to slip in as much as I can about vegetables and farmers’ markets. The gap has reached such a distance that our Canadian farmers are resorting to their own national campaigns. This week many newspapers had an insert entitled, The Real Dirt on Farming. I hope everyone reads it and follows up on the links to the websites <www.RealDirtonFarming.ca> and <www.FarmCareFoundation.ca>.

We have the safest food on the planet and the cheapest food on the planet and we owe that to our Canadian farmers.

The two best things we can do are to continue to support them by purchasing Canadian foods and equally important, informing ourselves about agriculture.

Machine gun restoration project under way

News - Harold - A pair of 100year-old German guns, taken as souvenirs at the end of World War I, will be temporarily removed from the cenotaph on Highway 14 to be refurbished thanks to the efforts of the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Stirling-Rawdon Historical Society.

Silenced in 1918, the guns will never fire again says society member John Lowry, but they will be cleaned up and returned to their original colours, perhaps even solving a few mysteries along the way. Lowry explains that significant research has been done on the weapons, a pair of Maschinengewehr 08 machine guns captured by 2nd Division CEF troops at the end of the war, but there are many unanswered questions as well.

It is known that the weapon on the north side of the cenotaph was captured in 1918 during the Battle of Arras, Lowry says, but the story behind the gun on the south side is less certain.

As well, the Arras weapon appears to have been disabled by a sniper’s shot and the restoration may lead to a conclusive answer, he adds, “if we find a .303

bullet in there.” Lowry says that the guns, capable of firing 500 rounds per minute, were watercooled using a chamber that surrounded the barrel and marksmen would deliberately aim for it hoping to quickly overheat the weapon rendering it useless.

The guns in Harold are among three examples of war trophies that are still on display in Hastings County, Lowry says, and they represent an important part of both local and Canadian history. But the remaining local pieces, which also include a trench mortar in Madoc and a field artillery piece in Trenton, are only a small fraction of the enemy weapons that ultimately arrived in Canada after World War I. Research suggests nearly 15,000 weapons including rifles, machine guns, mortars and field pieces were brought to Canada by the Canadian government during and after the war and many of those were distributed and displayed in communities across the country. A significant number, Lowry says, were scrapped during World War II, including a pair of machine guns received by the village of Stirling. The fate of a similar Please see “Gun” on page B19
