DISTRICT DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
I am thrilled to contribute to the Central Colombo Toastmasters Club Newsletter.
In today's dynamic world, opportunities abound As humans, we encounter different opportunities every day, and as Toastmasters members, we are presented with various opportunities, such as leadership roles or delivering speeches. It is up to us to have the courage to continue despite failures and doubts and seize these opportunities to create our future. As Winston Churchill wisely said, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that count "
I am pleased about the progress of the Central Colombo Toastmasters Club over the past few years, and I extend my best wishes to the club and its members as they strive for even greater success.
Let's overcome our doubts and limitations and realize the full potential of tomorrow, as Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today." Let's continue to embrace new opportunities, learn from our experiences, and create a future that we are proud of, both individually and as a team.
In conclusion, let's keep pushing ourselves to seize opportunities, overcome challenges, and create our own future in our Toastmasters journey. As we continue learning, growing, and supporting each other, I am confident we will achieve remarkable success
Let us transform together as a team

DIVISION DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Appreciation and recognition are important aspects of a leader as they can help to create a positive and motivated environment. My dear friends, when toastmasters feel valued and appreciated for their contributions, they are more likely to be engaged and productive in their goals Here are some ways that Toastmasters clubs can show appreciation and recognition to their members.
Acknowledge achievements: Toastmasters clubs can acknowledge the achievements of their members by awarding certificates, pins, or other forms of recognition for milestones such as completing a level or achieving a particular speaking goal This can be done at a club meeting, through an email, publicizing on social media or any other form of communication.
Celebrate successes: Toastmasters clubs can celebrate the successes of their members by organizing events or activities to mark milestones or achievements. This can include holding special club meetings, recognizing members at district or regional events, or creating a club newsletter or social media posts to showcase member achievements.
Show gratitude: Toastmasters clubs can express gratitude to their members for their hard work and dedication by thanking them for their contributions to the club. This can be done through simple acts of appreciation, such as saying thank you, or through more formal recognition programs, such as member of the month awards or club officer appreciation events.
By bringing in the importance of appreciation and recognition in our club culture, Toastmasters can create a supportive and motivating environment for its members, leading to higher engagement, participation, and overall club success
Central Colombo is a dynamic club that has members from different professions. Being a young club, I’m happy to witness the members supporting the area, division and district. I wish the Central Colombo Toastmasters Club, a great year ahead, and let us spread appreciation and recognition to all the members.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hello CCTMC!
It is my great pleasure to pen these few words for the latest issue of The Central Point as the President of Central Colombo Toastmasters Club. Their hard work has truly made a difference in the quality of our meetings and the growth of our members Our club is just two years old, but we have accomplished many things. EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Dear Reader,
The journey of the Central Colombo Toastmasters Club so far has been exceptional, with many achievements, hardships overcome, and bonds created. It was a tough job highlighting a few and sorting through the many memories we have had during our journey
With that in mind, taking on an editorial perspective for our 2nd-anniversary edition was a privilege. I want to thank all those who contributed and took the time to share their thoughts and messages for this edition It would be remiss of me not to thank the rest of the extended PR team for their excellent assistance in transforming our club literature into a work of art.
So when you are flipping through these pages, I am sure you will see our vibrant members and well-wishers' thoughts reflecting through the written paragraphs and also get a glimpse into the family here at CCTMC.
Wishing you a Good read!

TESTIMONIAL
While I knew a handful of the members of CCTMC with a few interactions outside the club, I saw what the club really is when I was the CJ for their club Humorous Speech and Evaluations contest in 2022 Convincing members to compete is never an easy task. Yet, they had ten contestants for each contest, and all of them were doing their best quite confidently
For a club that’s so young, it is remarkable how engaged and cohesive the members of the club are. They have a truly passionate group of individuals who have become great friends through the club itself And that’s a sign that the club will surely reach greater heights soon.

8 THE CENTRAL POINT
My toastmasters journey began in 2020, filled with nervous excitement as I joined my home club, "The Colombo Toastmasters Club " Though unsure of what the experience would bring, I was hopeful and eager to take on this new challenge However, I was also apprehensive, fearing that I may have made the wrong decision in joining a club - a notion that had been ingrained in my mind as something only for adults and as a way to pass the time
Today, I am proud to have the courage to face competent speakers and have won multiple contests at different levels, all while developing my skills as a leaderserving as the VPE of the Colombo Toastmasters Club and charter president of the Fortude Toastmasters Club
It didn't take long, however, for me to realize how wrong I was. I was welcomed into an incredible community of talented and diverse individuals, and every minute spent with them was the most productive and fulfilling two hours of my life. Attending club meetings soon became a habit, and I was continuously amazed by the many things I learned through the various meeting roles and opportunities to deliver speeches.
Toastmasters truly embodies leadership and public speaking, and I am grateful for the countless lessons, opportunities, and relationships it has provided me
TOASTMASTERS
The Epitome of Leadership and Public Speaking
By Thilini Agalawatta President - Fortude TMC & VP Education - Colombo TMC
Becoming a toastmaster gave me an unparalleled sense of satisfaction, as I received acknowledgement and evaluations that proved my growth as a speaker and leader. Toastmasters taught me that weaknesses are not things to be avoided but areas to improve, and every contest was a valuable learning experience on how to compete gracefully and accept any outcome.
THE CENTRAL POINT 9
We asked a champion speaker what the secret sauce for success was. Here's what she had to say
"Where did your Toastmasters career start?"
An Interview with Lakalya De Silva 1st runner upDivision B - Humorous Speech Contest 2023
FROM CLUB
It all started in 2015, when the College of Chemical Sciences (ICHEM) decided to initiate a gavel club for its students. I remember attending the very first demo meeting conducted by Siyane Toastmasters Club and the Gavel Club of University of Moratuwa. I was given a Homecoming card as the table topic and I vividly remember rambling on very nervously for more than 3 minutes and finally ending my speech by saying, “coming home is coming back to your loved ones”. Since then, we, a bunch of first year students built a home in the Gavel Club of College of Chemical Sciences where I also served as VP Ed and President in subsequent years When I finally joined the Toastmasters’ fraternity in 2020, it truly felt like coming home, coming back to your loved ones
"What was your first attempt at a speaking competition?"
My very first attempt at competitive speaking was at Specchmaster organized by the University of Sri Jayawardena in 2015 I only got through to the semifinals. But my friend Samadhi from our gavel club went all the way and became the first runner up Attending her grooming sessions and helping her train was what taught me the ABC of crafting speeches Thereafter in 2017, I was among the top five of Speechmaster and became the first runner up of the All-Island Best Gavel Speaker Contest.
"How did you feel like placing at this competition?"
It felt great to stretch and test my limits But it felt greater to represent our club and my beloved members. It felt good to know that the community was regarding our club (which was only two years old at the time) in high esteem because of my speech.
O10 THE CENTRAL POINT
What lessons have you learnt in preparing speeches for competitions?
This is probably a bad question to be asked frommesinceI’mguiltyofunderpreparation
HoweverIdohaveafewpointers
PRACTICE
The more prepared you are, the more confident you become Preparing your speeches, not just for competitions, butalsoinyourpathwaysinculcatethe disciplineofconsistencyinyou Itisthisdisciplinethat willtakeyouplaces
BE GENUINE
A speech goes beyond a performance. It is primarily a connection one makes with the audience and the easiest way to make this connection is to be genuine withyouraudience.
GATHER EXPERIENCES
It doesn’t matter how eloquently you speak if your words are hollow I think it’s important that we live a good and full life outside Toastmasters, that we gather experiences and gain exposure to all facets of life It is these experiences that will enrich your story and give you unique content for competitive speeches
WORK WITH YOUR MENTORS
AsJohnCrosbysays,“Mentoringisabraintopick,an ear to listen and a push in the right direction.” It goes without saying that all my wins are because of my mentors and the people who cared enough to give mefeedbacktomakemebetter.
"Any advice for preparing a script for competitions?"
I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to script a speech During my gavel years, I would write my speeches word to word And this worked well because it helped me to practice a lot. But now I panic more when I have a scripted speech since I have the burden of carrying it out word to word. These days, before I give a speech, I usually make a speech outline in my head or on a notebook, with the key points and transitions Thereafter I freewheel the speech while navigating through my main points I would however try my best to write down the speech once the contest is over or in the middle of the contest just so it’s documented. I don’t think I’m the best person to advice someone on preparing a script I think it’s up to us to discover the methodthatsuitsusbest
"Is stage fright real?"
It is absolutely real! Though stage fright is probably another form of fear of rejection and fear of failure Because in that moment, when the spotlight is on us, what we are actually fearing is not the stage or the eyes on us – we are fearing what those eyes are seeingandhowthoseeyeswilljudgeus. My symptoms start about 10 mins before stepping on stage My heart would start racing at an uncontrollable pace, hands would quiver, voice would crack and tremble. Sometimes on stage, my hands tremble so much that I have to restrain them by my side without making grand open palm gestures. We all are a work in progress –whatmattersisthatwedon’tgiveup
"You can't win every competition - how do you reset your mindset to compete again?"
I think I’m at an advantage here because I never compete with the aim to win. So even if I don’t get placed, I don’t consider it as a failure if I feel like I gave a satisfactory speech/ connected with the audience I’m happy and ready to contest again because it’s an opportunity to convince myself that I’mbetterthanIwasyesterday.

Those of us who attended Ovation 2022 had the privilege of listening to the World Champion of Public Speaking 2014, Dananjaya Hettiarachchi deliver an epic educational session titled “What’s Your Story?” where he outlined the hero’s journey in storytelling
According to the great man himself, the hero's journey is a narrative structure that is commonly used in storytelling. It is a template that outlines the various stages a protagonist goes through as they embark on a quest or journey, face challenges, and ultimately achieve their goal or purpose. The hero's journey was first introduced by Joseph Campbell in his book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces "
The hero's journey typically consists of the following stages:
The Call to Adventure: 1
The hero is presented with a challenge or opportunity that calls them to leave their ordinary world and embark on a journey.
Refusal of the Call 2
The hero initially refuses the call to adventure, often out of fear or a sense of duty to their current life.
Meeting the Mentor 3
4
5 Tests, Allies, and Enemies
The hero faces a series of challenges, meets allies and enemies, and learns more about the new world they have entered
6 Approach to the Inmost Cave
The hero approaches the central challenge or obstacle that must be overcome to achieve their goal.
THE HERO'S JOURNEY
By Uditha Weerasinghe Winner - Area B1 International Speech Contest 2023
The hero meets a mentor or guide who provides them with advice, training, or resources to help them on their journey.
Crossing the Threshold
The hero leaves their ordinary world and enters a new world or environment that is unfamiliar and often dangerous.
12 THE CENTRAL POINT
7
Ordeal
The hero faces a major obstacle or challenge that tests their skills, abilities and resolve
8
Reward
The hero overcomes the ordeal and receives a reward, often in the form of new knowledge, a magical item, or a boon.
9 The Road Back
The hero begins their journey back to the ordinary world but must often face new challenges and obstacles along the way.
10 Resurrection
The hero faces a final challenge or obstacle that tests their newfound skills and abilities.
11 Return with the Elixir
The hero returns to the ordinary world with a newfound sense of purpose or understanding and may share their knowledge or experience with others
These stages can be applied to a wide range of stories, from epic adventures to personal journeys of self-discovery By following this structure, writers can create compelling narratives that resonate with readers and audiences and inspire them to embark on their own hero's journey. Many world public speaking champions have used this technique to create amazing speeches that amaze us today, and nothing is stopping you from doing the same.
Dananjaya Hettiarachchi's winning speech was a tribute to his late father, who had taught him the value of thinking differently and embracing failure He used the hero's journey to structure his speech, describing his initial reluctance to embrace his father's philosophy, the challenges he faced in school and his career, and the transformational moment when he realized the actual value of his father's teaching
"Many world public speaking champions have used this technique to create amazing speeches."
The hero's journey is a powerful tool for structuring a compelling and impactful speech, as it allows speakers to take their audience on a journey of transformation and growth. By following the stages of the hero's journey, speakers can create a powerful and memorable experience for their audience that inspires them to take action and make a difference in the world. You, too, can use this technique to craft more effective speeches
"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary."

As the Chinese proverb goes, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. When I decided to join a meeting of the Virtusa CMB Toastmasters Club a little over five years ago, that single step took me on a journey that I find pretty unbelievable looking back now. Being an introvert, my objective back then was merely to move out of my comfort zone, work on my public speaking & maybe expand my network. Gradually when I got accustomed to the drill, I aspired to speak at a ToastmastersSpeechContestandtodabbleabitin the leadership roles that Toastmasters offered. I wanted someday to become the VP of Education oftheclub, butthatwasallitwasgoingtobe!
ROAD TO DTM
However, within the first few months of my membership, I got to see two of the club’s members, DTM Shiham Nawaz and DTM Hingston Lovell reaching the milestone of the Distinguished Toastmaster Award, the highest level of educational achievement in Toastmasters In a club that was a little over 5 years old, they were the first and second DTMs in the club respectively At the time I remember thinking, “I wonder how much longer it will take for the next DTM of the club to emerge?” Little did I imagine that the answer to thatquestionwouldlayonmyownself
By Kasun Ilangaratne, DTM VP Public Relations Central
Being one of the first Toastmasters to start on the Pathways learning experience from the start, the journey ahead felt a little uncertain as not many of the senior Toastmasters were very familiar with the new educational program. However, I was very fortunate to have joined Toastmasters at the same time as DTM Hashini Silva because the two of us kept helping each other out when completing projects in the Pathways program, and in our Toastmaster Journey overall as well. I remember that she and I submitted our Level 1 completions of our first pathway on the same day! Not only that, but when I did eventually become the VP Education of Virtusa CMB Toastmasters Club, she wouldtakeupthesameroleatDIMOToastmasters Club. The same remained true for the following yearswhenItookuptheroleofPresidentandArea Directoraswell!

Colombo Toastmasters Club
In the year that I was a Club President came one of the best experiences for me in my Toastmasters journey to date – the formation of the Central Colombo Toastmasters Club, under the leadership of DTM Arshad Nizam! I had never been so actively involved in the formation of a new Toastmasters Club, and I was blessed to be able to do it alongside DTM Arshad and DTM Hashini as the Club Mentors and to serve as a Club Sponsor alongside TM Sanara Premaratne. The experience I gained was truly rewarding.
The final hurdle was the DTM Project, which I satisfied through uplifting the IT skills of students at the Salvation Army Boys Home in Rajagiriya. The last two speeches I did to achieve my DTM Award were both based on this project and were evaluated by DTM Gadjen Suryakumar and DTM Hashini Silva respectively.
On the 15th of January 2023, I delivered my last speech titled “Frozen”, to a packed CCTMC Audience! That same day I got to know that after leaving the meeting, my speech had inspired one of our club members in the audience, to stop the vehicle that she was travelling in and help an old beggar on the street because my words about helping other people, had resonated with her That will forever remain one of the single greatest pieces of feedback that I have ever received about my speeches
Time passed by. When I was about halfway through the journey of becoming an Area Director, I had completed most of the requirements for becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster – completion of 2 Pathways, a Club Sponsor Role, and a Club Officer Role. I was midway through a District Leader role. What remained for me was to serve as a Club Mentor or Club Coach and to complete the DTM Project. The opportunity to serve as a Club Mentor came when DTM Hashini mentioned her interest in starting a new corporate club at her current workplace –North Technology Group. We were able to charter the club by June of 2022, and I was able to support the club as a mentor. In the meantime, I also got the opportunity to take the initiative in forming another Corporate Club with the support of TM Mazin, TM Chethana, DTM Hashini and many other wonderful individuals. I was able to take up the mantle of Club Mentor for the Fortude Toastmasters Club.
Five years ago, if someone were to have asked me, “Where do you see yourself in Toastmasters in another five years?” I don’t think I would have imagined doing even half of the things that I have done today. My road to DTM has been amazing, and I can only hope that the next five years will be even more amazing
As Tony Robbins once said, “The only impossible journey is the one you never begin” Are you ready to tread your road to DTM?

If anyone asks me what my favorite memory of 2023 has been so far, I'd say, hands down, that it was 'Moving from Speaker to Trainer 2023'
When our District Director, DTM Nisal Weerakoon said, Hashini, I want to organize "Moving from Speaker to Trainer 2 0", little did I know that this will not only become a highlight of my Toastmasters journey, but also my first step in spearheading an event of this caliber.
However, as Jim Collins points out in his book ‘Good to Great’, you need the right people on the bus before you work out where you want it to go. If not for the amazing Organizing team of ‘Moving from Speaker to Trainer’, this event wouldn’t have become a success The confidence to accept a challenge brought us together and the spirit of teamwork helped us to ensure that all aspects of the event were planned, organized & executed without deviations What is noteworthy to mention here is that TM Methsara Benaragama was also part of this amazing team, while DTM Kasun Ilangaratne was also present to support the team on the day of the event
ORGANIZING SPEAKERTO TRAINER'23
By Hashini Silva, DTM
Event Chair
Moving from Speaker to Trainer 2023
The panel of fantastic trainers did a great job in ensuring that all the participants had a good learning experience which was truly fulfilling, over the span of two days As amazing as the event turned out, the real highlight was how much everyone enjoyed and networked during the two days. TM Praveen Nanayakkara, TM Lakalya De Silva and TM Nathasha Silva who were participants of this program will undoubtedly bear testament to this.
I had numerous reasons to say NO to DTM Nisal when he asked me if I could spearhead this initiative. However, had I declined this opportunity given, I would’ve missed out on the best experience I’ve had in Toastmasters, thus far! Dear readers, when opportunity presents itself, don't be afraid to go after it. As Richard Branson once said, 'If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!'
