PACE PROGRAM CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY The Central Baptist College Professional Adult College Education (PACE) program will celebrate its 15th anniversary in the fall of 2015. The program began in 2000 with 39 students and has had more than 1200 students participate.

PACE provides the working adult the opportunity to work full time and obtain a college degree by offering courses in the evenings in Conway and North Little Rock as well as online.

CBC will be celebrating the anniversary with events throughout the year. At the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce Administrative Professionals Day luncheon in April, CBC awarded six $1,000 scholarships to Conway businesses to kick off the PACE celebration. Two other $1,000 scholarships were awarded at the

Conway Leadercast event hosted at CBC in May. Other events include Lunch & Learns, radio remotes featuring PACE graduates, and special events during Homecoming 2016.

PACE offers an Associate of Arts in General Education and an Associate of Science in Military Technologies degree. Bachelor of Science degrees offered are Human Resource Management, Leadership, Leadership and Ministry, Liberal Studies, Management Information Systems, Organizational Management, and Psychology. CBC also offers a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

Online degrees offered are an Associate of Arts in General Education, a Bachelor of Science in Leadership and Ministry, and a Bachelor of Business Administration. ✝

What did you like most about PACE? Amy - I love the smaller class sizes. The instructors are very hands on. The students have had similar life experiences and I made friends with people that I never would have met had it not been for the PACE program.

Donnie - I enjoyed the adjunct instructors because they were teaching from a real world point of view. They were teaching what they lived every day.

How did you hear about PACE? Amy - I was in the Faulkner County Leadership Institute with Sancy Faulk and she talked about the PACE program. Donnie and I had always wanted to finish our degrees. This program sounded like a perfect fit.

What was your biggest reservation about going back to school? Both: Our age and the fact that we are pretty busy with our church and community involvement. We also have two girls that are in college. Our entire family was in college at the same time.

How did the PACE program fit into your schedule? Both: We had to figure a routine and once we got used to it, it would change again in 5 weeks. We were committed. We weren’t in this to just finish, we wanted to finish well.

What are you doing now with your Degree?

Amy - I want to encourage others through my job here at CBC. I want to see students succeed. I tell them, “I am your #1 cheerleader!!!! I will be here from when you enroll until you graduate.”This decision can be scary, even for Adult Learners.

Donnie – I have been at Cintas for 19 years. I have worked my way up without a degree, but now I can be considered for promotions that require a degree, even at age 49.

Who was your biggest fan? Both - Each other and our girls They now have parents who didn’t quit. We are both the first college graduates in our immediate families. This has been a sweet ride.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT VISION 2020 UPDATE Vision 2020 is a plan to complete 10 major construction projects over a 10 year period to accommodate an enrollment of 2,020 students. Vision 2020 was publicly launched in February of 2011 and since that time the first three Vision 2020 projects (David T. Watkins Academic Building, Story Library, and Dickson Hall) have been completed and over $16 million has been contributed toward the Phase 1 goal. Central Baptist College would not be where it is without the prayers and financial support of so many of you who are reading this right now!

Work still continues toward completion of Vision 2020! On September 9 & 10, 2014, a group of 25 individuals, including administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, board members, and community business leaders met off-site to begin work on a revised three to five year strategic plan for Central Baptist College. On January 29, 2015, another group of 25 individuals, some from the first group and some new, met to continue the work. Final revisions to the strategic plan are being made over the summer.

From the strategic plan will come a revised campus master facilities plan. Strategic priorities established for the college will guide construction and renovation of our remaining Vision 2020 projects. What is known, however, is that Project #4 of Vision 2020 will address athletic needs. We are praying about, thinking about, and studying the most appropriate way to address our athletic needs that makes the best use of our resources and will continue to meet athletic needs of the

institution for the future. With with over half of our traditional students participating in ten intercollegiate sports programs, meeting this need is a top priority.

It is so important to note that even though Vision 2020 is heavily promoted and much focus seems to be placed on developing and building physical infrastructure, the mission of Central Baptist College remains the same. In fact when the group of 25 met back in September of 2014, the mission of the institution was reaffirmed with just some minor adjustments.

The mission is now more succinct, but the heart of the mission remains the same. I hope you enjoy Central Baptist College’s newly revised mission statement (see below)! Please continue to pray for the transformational work being done by God through Central Baptist College!

CBC DAY FOR VISION 2020: SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 CBC Day for Vision 2020 is fast approaching! If you haven’t already, mark your calendars for September 20. On this day, churches are asked to take a one-time offering for Vision 2020 and/or make a pledge to give additional offerings over the 12 months to follow. If it’s not convenient to take the offering or make a commitment on this particular day, consider any Sunday in August, September, or October, the three months set aside by the BMA of Arkansas as special emphasis for the College.

CBC NEWS BURGESS AUDITORIUM RENOVATION BEGINS With graduation behind us, workers have begun to unbolt seats, rip up carpet, and order new sound and lighting equipment…all making way for a complete renovation of the Wassel L. Burgess Auditorium! The renovation will address five of the most critical needs in this facility: 1) new sound system; 2) professional lighting; 3) construction of a new sound booth; 4) paint and flooring upgrades; and 5) new curtains, backdrop and repair of the ceiling above the stage area.

Many consider the Burgess Auditorium the “spiritual hub” of the campus. The Burgess Auditorium is the home of the CBC Music Department, which now includes CBC Singers, Chamber Choir, Worship Band, Worship Choir, Women’s Chorus, and Hand Bells. The Music Department also produces a Madrigal Feast in the fall and a spring Musical. All of these groups use the Burgess Auditorium. The Auditorium also supports baccalaureate degrees in Music and Worship Arts and minors in Music, Music Theater, Renovations of Burgess Auditorium are underway with significant upgrades planned. and Worship Arts. EDUCATION NEWS CBC CHOIR SINGS AT DISNEY WORLD FOR THEIR ANNUAL TOUR

In the past, the choir has gone to places Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

like New York, Chicago, and even to Puerto Rico. This year thirty-seven students and Choir Director Jim Turner set off on their destination to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

But they didn’t just drive to Florida; they made several stops on the way. Turner called it the “Seven States Tour”.

The choir made their way to Mississippi where they sang at Second Baptist Church in Bay Springs and Lamar Christian School in Purvis.

The choir also went to the Duck Diner in Monroe, Louisiana and got to perform in the Duck Commander warehouse. Turner said that singing in the Duck Commander warehouse was fun and one of his favorite places that the choir performed.

After leaving Monroe, Louisiana, the choir sang at Union Christian Academy in Farmerville, Louisiana and then made their way to Navarre, Florida to enjoy the beach.

After the beach, the CBC choir finally made it to Disney World where they spent the next five days. They left Disney World only to stop and sing at one more church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Turner said, “It was the best choir tour since I’ve been here and I’ve been here ten years.” ✝

RUFUS & MILDRED CRAWFORD ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED Central Baptist College announces the establishment of The Rufus and Mildred Crawford Endowed Scholarship. Mrs. Crawford initiated the creation of the scholarship after Bro. Crawford’s passing on March 8, 2015. Bro. Crawford graduated from Jacksonville Baptist College, Stephen F. Austin University, and attended the BMA Theological Seminary.

He served with the Baptist Missionary Association of America for 67 years as an evangelist, teacher, radio speaker, pastor, and missionary to Brazil and Portugal. He also had a long tenure in the field of education as a teacher at a seminary in Brazil and as president of Columbia Christian School in Magnolia. All five of the Crawford children (Stanley, Diann, Kay, Dixie, and Telma) attended and graduated from CBC. The Rufus and Mildred Crawford Endowed Scholarship will give priority to licensed ministerial students majoring in Bible or Missions whose goal is to serve on the foreign mission field. “It is such a blessing that Mrs. Crawford chose to honor the memory of Bro. Crawford by creating a scholarship that will continue Bro. Rufus’ legacy by helping students Bro. Rufus Crawford whose goal is to serve on the foreign mission field,” said CBC President Terry Kimbrow.

Central Baptist College has over sixty endowed scholarships representing over $2,000,000 in contributions. Endowed scholarships serve as a lasting tribute, and as with all of the endowed scholarships at the institution, the initial donation will be placed in the permanent endowment.

The principal will never be spent; only the interest will be awarded as scholarships. The scholarship will be awarded by vote of the CBC Scholarship Committee, taking into account the qualifications and eligibility of the applicants as detailed in the scholarship agreement.

HOMECOMING 2015

Homecoming 2015 blitzed the town blue! We welcomed back alumni and friends, as well as launched the new Mustang Chili Cook Off. During Homecoming weekend faculty, staff, alumni and local businesses battled for the right to call their chili the best!

On Saturday we welcomed back CBC graduates from the classes of 1963, 1964 and 1965. After the Half Century Club Inductions guests attended the Alumni Luncheon where we honored Luis Ortega as the Outstanding Young Alumnus and Phylis Hoffmann as our Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Saturday afternoon we welcomed back former Homecoming Queens for a tea, and heard a message from our 1994 Queen, Kristen (Glover) Riddle. Saturday’s festivities concluded with the crowning of the 2015 CBC Homecoming Queen, Lauren Eyre. Congratulations!

A highlight of this year’s Homecoming activities included the induction of the second class into the Half-Century Club. Seventeen graduates from the years 1963, 1964, and 1965 were inducted into the Club in a special ceremony Saturday, February 21, 2015 in the Ronald V. Mitchell Lecture Hall. Family and friends watched as each inductee was presented a medallion bearing the official Central Baptist College seal. Daniel (Dan) C. Raines, Class of 64, and James (Jim) E. Caroline “Norma” (Harris) Crass (1963) Norma worked as a secretary for Conway Public Schools for 24 years.

Vivian (Gregory) Guthrie (1963) Vivian has worked as a high school teacher, Adult Education Teacher for CCUA, Trainer for AR Migrant Education, and as an ESL Instructor for CCUA and UACCH. Barbara (Zellner) Simmons (1963) Barbara has worked as a secretary for the U of A Cooperative Extension Service in Faulkner County for 31 years.

John Henry Allen (1964) John has worked as a CPA for Douglas Walker & Co. CPA’s and John Allen, CPA. Sharon (Hoover) Daniels (1964) Sharon worked as an administrative assistant for Ministers Resource Services for 31 years.

Rachel (Boren) Frey (1964) Rachel worked as a registered nurse for 45 years in various hospitals across the state.

Phylis (Haden) Hoffmann (1964) Phylis worked in the Registrar’s Office at CBC for 37 years, and served as registrar for 16 years. Phylis was also the 2015 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Jack Hornaday (1964) Jack has worked five years as an elementary school teacher, ten years as a vocational evaluator at Hot Springs Rehabilitation Center, 27 years as director of the BMA or Arkansas Children’s Home, and six years as a maintenance supervisor for Methodist Family Health.

Lawrence (Larry) A. Miller (1964) Larry has worked as a meat cutter at Safeway and Kroger for five years. He was with Affiliated Foods for eight years and a key account salesman for Bryan Foods and Armour Swift Errich for 20 years.

Teddie Faye (Woodruff) Raines (1964) Teddie has worked as a teacher for 34 years.

Daniel (Dan) C. Raines (1964) Dan worked as an educator for Russellville Public Schools for 40 years. He has worked as a teacher, building principal, and district administrator.

JoAnn (Wells) Ratliff (1964) JoAnn taught as an elementary school teacher for 28 years.

John R. Way (1964&1966) John has served churches in the BMA and ABA for over 50 years.

Kenneth R. Colvert (1965) Kenneth served as a teacher for Lee Co. School District for 24 years, a principal for seven years, and served in the Lee Co. School District for 10 years. He has also served as the Arkansas State Galilean director for 27 years.

He is currently serving as the National Galilean director.

Tommy Guthrie (1965) Tommy has pastored churches in Arkansas, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.

James E. Hoffmann (1965) James has pastored churches in Arkansas, Missouri, Michigan, and Alaska. He has also been the editor of the Missouri Missionary Baptist Paper since 1989.

Oliver “ Douglas” Hoffmann (1965) Doug spent 28 years in the Pulaski Country School System. He won Pulaski County Elementary Principal of the Year in 1988, and Outstanding Principal of the Year Zone IX in 1988. He was named CBC Alumnus of the Year in 1997.

Gary D. Gray (1965) Gary spent over 40 years in the telephony field, the last 15 as the Regional Service Manager for the FAA. William Willis (1965&1966) William has pastored nine churches, in four states. He is currently the Pastor of Pinnacle Assembly of God. Nona Wilkinson Anderson (1963) Nona taught English and Spanish at Paris High, Dardanelle High, and Gurdon High over a period of 16 years. She worked as a bank teller for three years. In 1988 Nona began teaching full time at Ouachita Baptist University and taught there for 24 years.

Sondra (Lovelace) Gordon (1964) Sondra worked as a teacher for 13 years and then spent another 21 years working in civil service.

Laverl (King) Terry (1965) Laverl taught business education from 1969 until 1971. She retired from the University of Central Arkansas Human Resources Department in 2004.

Laura (Goodwin) Elrod (1965) Laura taught elementary and middle school for 23 years, and retired in 2006.

Brenda (Kirby) Hawkins (1968) Brenda retired after 41 years of service as the administrative-support supervisor at the Faulkner County Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture.

1970s

David Mitchell (1973) David Mitchell, associational missionary for Bartholomew Baptist Association in Warren, Ark., was named Arkansas Associational Missionary of the Year at a banquet held at Ouachita Baptist University.

1990s

Jennifer Bullock (1996) Jennifer Bullock has taken over as the president of the CBC Alumni Association.

2000s

Bonnie Holloway (2002) Bonnie Holloway was recognized as a finalist at the Administrative Professionals Day Luncheon hosted by the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce.

2010s

Jonathan Cofer (2011) Jonathan Cofer has accepted the full time Youth Pastor position at First Baptist Church Buna in Buna, Texas. He and his wife, Meagan, also welcomed their second daughter, Maddi Joy, into the world on January 8, 2015.

FACULTY & STAFF EMPLOYEES RECOGNIZED FOR DECADES OF SERVICE CBC recognized several employees for their many years of service to the institution during the annual Employee Awards Luncheon on Monday, April 13.

Serving 25 Years and receiving a CBC lapel pin with six point diamond plus a monetary award was Dr. Beth Cantrell, Associate Professor of Business and Chair of the Business Department. Serving 35 Years and receiving a CBC lapel pin with two diamonds and one ruby plus a monetary award was Dr. Dusty Bender, Professor of History and Chair of the Social Studies Department. Dr. Jesse Thomas was recognized for his 45 years of total service to CBC. Though Dr. Thomas retired from full-time service to the College in 2006, he has continued to teach on a part-time basis. ✝

LINN TO HEAD PACE AND ONLINE STUDIES Chad Linn has been appointed Professional Adult College Education department chair and director of online studies. In this role, Linn is responsible for scheduling and overseeing strategic planning for the PACE department, for policy development, and with developing new courses and degree programs that meet academic and local industry needs.

Linn has taught in the business department for the past three years. He holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant for the State of Arkansas.

Linn is a veteran of the US Air Force weather service and a veteran of the Conway Fire Department.

When asked how he felt taking over the PACE Department, Mr. Linn replied “I am honored to lead the non-traditional program at Central Baptist College. What an awesome work God is doing in these last days. If God is for it, no man can stop it.”

CHERRY HIRED AS VP OF FINANCE

Paul Cherry, VP of Finance

Mr. Paul Cherry has been hired and began duties as the vice president for finance at Central Baptist College on February 18, 2015. He provides strategic leadership and oversight of the college’s finance and accounting functions, business services and auxiliary enterprises, human resources, and physical plant operations.

Cherry previously worked at First National Bank in Hot Springs, Ark. for 22 years serving as CEO, CFO, and legal counsel. Cherry has also been employed by Lovett and Foster, Certified Public Accountants for three years and the Arkansas attorney general’s office and division of legislative audit for 15 years.

Cherry received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law. Cherry is presently enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program at Southern Arkansas University.

Cherry is a CPA and an attorney. He is involved in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Arkansas Bar Association, the Gideon’s International, the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, and The National Society of Leadership and Success.

MUSTANG ATHLETICS CBC BASEBALL QUALIFIES FOR NCCAA WORLD SERIES

With the CBC Mustangs runner up finish in the National Christian College Athletic Association’s (NCCAA) Central Regional Tournament in Conway on May 15-16, the CBC baseball team received an invitation to play in the NCCAA World Series.

The Mustangs won four straight elimination games to reach the championship round against Oklahoma Christian and to secure a national tournament berth. OCU won the title with a victory over CBC. This is the first ever CBC Baseball team to qualify for a World Series event. The World Series was played on May 20-23 in Mason, Ohio.

While the CBC baseball team went 1-3 in the tournament, the Mustangs have had a great season and have made us proud. ✝

BRISTER HITS 200TH WIN MARK

Dr. Aaron Brister

Dr. Aaron Brister, in his second season with Central Baptist College, notched his 200th career win with a 9-6 victory over Henderson State on April 6, 2015. He also posted a school record of 31 wins in his first season as the Mustangs head coach.

Originally from Searcy, Dr. Brister was an honor student at Crowley Ridge College in Paragould, where he played both baseball and basketball. After finishing his Associate of Arts degree, he transferred to Harding University in Searcy to play baseball. Dr. Brister was an Academic All-American all four years of playing collegiate sports and graduated Magna Cum Laude 1996 with a major in kinesiology and a minor in psychology. In 2001, he completed his Master of Science in education at Harding University and obtained his Ph.D. in kinesiology from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 2004.

Before coming to CBC, Dr. Brister lead the Emmanuel College (Ga) Lions, where his 2012 team ranked 3rd in the nation. He had three consecutive years of 20 plus wins, went to the NCCAA Regional Tournament and the NCCAA World Series. ✝ 10

MUSTANGS JOIN AMERICAN MIDWEST CONFERENCE Central Baptist College is pleased to announce its move to the American Midwest Conference beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year. The move should reduce travel significantly for the Mustangs and unite it with fellow Arkansas schools, Lyon College and Williams Baptist.

“We are excited about joining the American Midwest Conference — a stable and committed conference that excels in academics and athletics,” CBC Athletic Director Lyle Middleton said.

The Mustangs will begin AMC competition with men’s and women’s soccer, and volleyball. Central Baptist also offers wrestling, making the AMC a complete conference in wrestling, along with men’s and women’s basketball in the winter season. This spring season, Central Baptist will compete in men’s and women’s golf, as well as baseball and softball.

“Joining the American Midwest Conference brings a new level of competition that will benefit our student-athletes and strengthen our overall athletic program,” said Central Baptist President Terry Kimbrow.

Southern members of the AMC are Williams Baptist, Lyon and Freed-Hardeman in Henderson, Tenn. Other members are: Benedictine (Springfield, Ill.), Columbia College (Columbia, Mo.), Hannibal-LaGrange (Hannibal, Mo.), Harris-Stowe (St. Louis), Lindenwood (Belleville, Ill.), Missouri Baptist (St. Louis), Park University (Parkville, Mo.), St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Stephens College (Columbia, Mo.), Williams Woods (Fulton, Mo.). ✝
