Transformation is An interview with Gareth Thomas The essential being, to an artist’s canvas, is for the artist to make some form of statement or observation. This can of course vary from way out abstract at one end of the scale, to detailed fine art at the other. Gareth has spent the past 24 years or so painting here in the Algarve. Producing art for his Gallery has been the main thrust of this work, using a wide variety of subjects and styles, though various large commissions have also had their place in his repertoire. At a stage in his life where he can be free from a daily work routine, he has decided to go purely into commission work, as he says, “ When I have a commission, I can devote all my time to it without interruption, and when I do not, I can work on new techniques and materials, without needing to produce work for my Gallery”. The idea of concentrating on one particular client, is born from attention to detail. Gareth goes on at length, with regard to the attention to detail both Architects and Designers take in their clients’ requirements. Yet with art, so many have to search around for suitable art to complete the house. “Why not commission the art, to go hand in hand with the architectural and decor style that has had so much effort put in to it?” To this extent, he has produced a stunning portfolio of past commissioned works. Five star apartments in London’s Canary Wharf. An incredible commission that took, off and on, over eight years to complete in Newcastle. A diverse range of paintings, including an Italian Restaurant, Business Reception area, Bars, Corporate meeting rooms and a three floor entrance hallway. The interview ends with Gareth saying “If it is something I believe I cannot do justice to, I will not take the work on. If I believe I can, then my total energy will be given to making a success of it.” I think that anyone who is seriously looking to complete their project with style, needs to make sure they have a look at the portfolio and talk to him.
