Create the Space that Works for You

et’s face it, the way you feel about your kitchen will either make or break your feelings about the overall functionality of your house. Yes, kitchens are that serious for most home owners, and more importantly, for home buyers, if you are looking to sell in the near future. One of the most important things to consider when preparing for a kitchen remodel is, what is important for me in this space? A majority of those who are dissatisfied with their kitchens will all agree: the layout and workspace are the biggest issues. So, here we are going to explore five main layouts for a kitchen remodel that you can go through with your licensed general contractor to see which plan works best for you and your space.

• The Triangle layout, or as I like to call it, the Holy Trinity of any working kitchen is built strictly for only the most serious of

chefs looking for a practical and easy work station. The three main points of the kitchen are all conveniently located in the shape of a triangle: the range, sink and refrigerator. • A Barrier Kitchen or Zone Design is similar to the Triangle layout kitchen, but the main difference is that the Barrier or Zone design offers a sense divide between the kitchen and neighboring living space. This is most commonly achieved by utilizing a countertop which functionally serves as both a work space and divider, allowing the room to feel open and offering interaction while entertaining. • The Galley Kitchen is the ideal design if you want to maximize work space and have limited square footage for a kitchen work area. This shotgun style kitchen makes it the perfect way to maximize counter space for working, cabinet space for storage and room for all your appliances. The only real drawback is that the Galley Kitchen design traditionally does not offer space for a kitchen table. • The L-Shape design offers privacy when cooking because of the L-shaped wall that usually divides the entertaining room from the kitchen work space. If you are an entertainer and would like more interaction with your guests while you are in the kitchen, talk to your contractor about adding an island. A kitchen island is an excellent solution that allows some privacy to the kitchen,

adding practical work space and giving you interaction between you and your guests. • The U-Design Kitchen provides a massive counter and storage space as well as great flexibility. The U-Design kitchen is the ultimate one-cook kitchen, with the perfect workspace to spread out and it offers a more than adequate amount of storage space. With so much to consider when planning your kitchen remodel, you want to be sure that the general contractor you are working with comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience to design the perfect kitchen layout for you and your family.
