NORTHERN Lights
EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC
Iceland’s natural wonders are world-famous but nothing quite rivals the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis These magical lights appear from late August through April as long dark nights set the stage for a show that’s completely free - though it requires a bit of patience and luck!
While Reykjavik does have a bit of light pollution there are plenty of spots for aurora-watching in and around the city For starters, one of the locals favorite is Grótta area, which is just a refreshing walk or a quick drive from the city center Here, you can cozy up along the darkened coast, enjoying the sounds of the waves while waiting for the lights to appear Another option is Perlan that offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city and the sky For a more urban option, check out Hljómskálagarður Park, which, despite being near downtown, offers a surprising amount of tranquility and is a good viewing spot for Northern lights
For those wanting to see the Northern litghts outside of Reykjavik, Iceland s countryside has some top-tier viewing spots About 45 minutes from Reykjavik is Þingvellir National Park that offers stunning volcanic landscapes and pitch-black skies - perfect for those ready to venture into the great outdoors The shores of Lake Kleifarvatn and the Reykjanes peninsula are also within easy reach, with wide open skies
To maximize your chances keep an eye on the aurora forecast from the Icelandic Meteorological Office (seriously it’s a lifesaver!) Dress warmly bring a warm drink (hot chocolate) and don’t forget your camera if you’re keen to capture those green swirls Many Reykjavik-based tour companies also offer guided Northern Lights excursions which can take some of the guesswork out of the hunt and make it a bit more fun
The Northern Lights are more than a visual treat they’re a magical

The mysterious Hidden Folk
Did you know that most Icelanders belief in elves and Huldufólk (hidden folk) - at least most of them wouldn’t dare to admit that they don’t believe
These mystical beings are said to live in the rocks, hills, and lava fields of Iceland, hidden away from our view Icelanders have long respected the “hidden folk,” and many still take special care not to disturb their homes In fact, there are stories of roads being rerouted to avoid areas where elves are believed to reside!
According to folklore elves resemble humans but are slightly taller and much more beautiful Huldufólk on the other hand are thought to live alongside us in an invisible world They’re known to be protective of their homes, so Icelanders are careful not to interfere with rocks and landscapes that might be their dwellings Some even say that those who disrespect the Huldufólk risk bad luck or strange occurrences!
The belief in these hidden beings runs deep, and it s not just ancient history Many Icelanders today still hold a respectful awareness of their presence
So, if you’re exploring Iceland’s vast landscapes, remember to tread lightly there might just be a hidden watcher nearby!
Kristófer and Svanfríður childhood friends from Akranes turned their lifelong bond into a shared dream of hospitality In 1994, they seized the opportunity to purchase “The Guesthouse Flókagata 1” in Reykjavík, marking the humble beginnings of Center Hotels - a family-run business that now includes 8 hotels and 1 apartment hotel in the heart of Reykjavík
Kristófer's father, Oliver, who worked as a live-in night porter at the guesthouse, played a key role in their early journey Their three children - Maron, Sara, and Anna Ólöf - have been involved from the very start and continue to contribute in various ways to the hotel chain today
Their journey began with Skjaldbreið in 1998, a former pharmacy on Laugavegur street, and continued with Klöpp in 2001, located in the old RÚV broadcasting headquarters Passionate about preserving Reykjavík s history, they transformed Þingholt, once the Morgunblaðið printing house, into their third hotel in 2006

In 2007 Arnarhvoll hotel became a part of the family that before used to be an engineer’s school and by 2008 Plaza became their largest hotel Miðgarður followed in 2015 bringing fresh energy to a building once designed for banking operations And then in 2019 Laugavegur joined the collection named after the historic path to hot springs

Despite challenges in 2020 they introduced Grandi a hotel that honors Reykjavík’s industrial heritage and later Þingholt Apartments, offering beautifully designed hotel apartments with Center Hotels’ signature touch
Every building has its story, and we’re proud to bring that history forward while creating memorable stays for our guests Here’s to 30 years and many more to come!

[TheYuleLads]
If you’ve ever thought Christmas needed a little more mischief Iceland has you covered! Forget about Santa’s elves or reindeer; here in the land of fire and ice we celebrate the holiday season with the Yule Lads 13 quirky brothers that have been making Icelanders laugh (and occasionally grimace) for centuries, each bringing their own unique flavor to the festive season
The Yule Lads are the sons of Grýla, a fearsome troll, and Leppalúði, her henpecked husband They live in the mountains with their parents and a particularly hungry cat known as the Yule Cat
Starting 13 nights before Christmas, each Yule Lad comes down from the mountains, one by one, to cause a bit of chaos and leave small gifts for children Icelandic children place a shoe in the window If they’ve been good they’ll wake up to find a treat; if they’ve been naughty well let’s just say they’ll learn to appreciate the value of a better-behaved tomorrow since they’ll usually only get a potato in their shoe

As if the Yule Lads weren’t enough, Icelandic Christmas also features the Yule Cat (Jólakötturinn) This enormous feline prowls the countryside, looking for people who haven’t received new clothes for Christmas According to legend the Yule Cat will devour those without fresh garments a not-so-subtle nudge to finish your knitting projects or indulge in a festive shopping spree!
While the Yule Lads were once seen as fearsome figures (used to scare children into behaving), they’ve mellowed over the years Today, they’re a beloved part of Icelandic Christmas traditions, bringing a mix of humor and nostalgia to the season
So, next time you hear a door slam or find your sausages missing, don’t blame your family chances are, one of the Yule Lads is nearby! And if you’re staying in Iceland this Christmas, keep your eyes open You never know what these playful pranksters might leave behind
