-W-hai- Is A Benefii- Auci-ion?

The Center for Photography at Woodstock, a not-for-profit arts and education organization, offers an annual sale of fine photographic prints in order to raise money for our creative programs. Founded by Howard Greenberg in 1977, the Center provides an artistic home for contemporary visual artists. Our purpose is to enhance dialogue and encourage inquiry about contemporary photography and related media through innovative programs in education, exhibition, publication, and services that create access to professional workspace, nourishing responses, and new audiences. All of the prints for sale hy living artists were donated and serve to affirm the importance of art in our culture and to advocate support for the quality programming and services that the Center has continued to present for the last 21 years.

Some of these artists' names are carved in the history of artistic traditions, some are not yet household names, but they are inspiring innovators. This is a crucial group effort to raise money for the Center's creative programs in education, exhibition, publication, and services for artists. We need you to take an active role-collect photographs ji-om the Center's Auction. The funds realized ji·om this sale will determine what we will have financially to produce our 1999 creative programs. The Phot:ography Collect:ions at: t:he Samuel Dorsky M'useurn of Art:

The urge to collect is thought to be instinctive. We only have to look at the gatherers of nature, and the history of humankind to observe this ubiquitous phenomenon. Collections, whether private or public, are created with different motivations and serve different purposes. Most museums collect to preserve objects of apparent value that otherwise might be lost to the future. Museum collections bring together objects so that they may be used, interpreted, and enjoyed. It is the collection that makes a museum unique.

The State University of New York at New Paltz has engaged in collecting works of art since 1939, pre-dating the existence of the College Art Gallery by almost twenty-five years. The collection at SUNY New Paltz became formalized in 1955 as an extension of a program started by a visionary Art Committee that mounted temporary exhibitions in the hallways and corridors of the College Union Building. As a matter of policy, the Committee acquired objects from each exhibition to augment a growing permanent collection. The Committee, believing deeply in the inherent educational value of art, sought to utilize original works in the collec-

thousand work~ of art by 1994. It was in October of that year that Samuel Dorsky, philanthropist, art collector, and long-time friend of the College Art Gallery, made a significant donation to create new exhibition space for the College's permanent collection. Dorsky's gift was matched by the State University Construction Fund, and again by an

Prior to my tenure as museum director at SUNY New Paltz, I taught photography, and worked as a professional photographer, and a freelance curator. Upon arriving at New Paltz in 1982, I discovered that the permanent collection of nearly one thousand four hundred works of art, included only two photogra phs-1 was appalled. The photographs, one by W. Eugene Smith and the other by Henri Cartier Bresson, were classic, but it was clear that the collection required development, a task that became one of my highest priorities. By 1995, the photography collection included close to two hundred objects.Although, clearly not a major collection, it is still an important one which includes fine examples of historical and contemporary photography and examples of diverse photographic processes and techniques. It is an important asset to the museum and our educational and interpretive programs.

One of the most significant elements in the development of the photography collection at SUNY New Paltz occurred in 1995 when the College Art Gallery and the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW) created a partnership, resulting in the tion or on exhibition, to enhance the College's teaching mission.

The College Art Gallery was established in 1964, and became the first museum in the State University system.

long-term loan of CPW's permanent print collection to New Paltz. The rationale for this arrangement was a practical one. Having been involved with the Center since 1979, I was quite familiar with the collection, and quite familiar with the challenge faced by the CPW staff. With a new museum becoming a reality at SUNY New Paltz it became feasible to consider storing their collection in the museum. The advantages to each institution were apparent.

A selection featuring collections of 19th and 20th century fine art photography which bring to light the magic of the medium.

The selections are made from four private photography collections, those of Susan Ferris, Douglas James, Colleen Kenyon/Marc Miller, and Harriet Tannin. All the collectors live in the Catskill mountain community and many have-in part-formed their archives through purchase at the Center for Photography's annual benefit auction (this year to be held on Saturday, October 10th).

If you look closely, each collection has an individual voice which is the fun of collecting and of looking at more than one collectors' treasures.

Photography is amazing. By the 1850s it was already changing the way we look at things. Immediate and accessible, it showed the truth frozen in time ... or did it?

These images span the 1900s. Each is as complex and full of information as an obelisk. Yet each retains a simplicity and integrity worthy of art.

Today we are on the threshold of a complete change in the form.As digital imagery becomes the standard, photographs from the twentieth century will be distinguished for their elegant and earthy materials (gold, platinum, silver, paper) and the hand-crafting that goes into each print as well as for their content.

When we began buying photographs, it was the natural outcome of our combined interests. Marc had been an art and antique dealer and an auctioneer, and I, a fine art photographer. We moved from looking at his domain paintings and drawings-to mine-photographs, both contemporary and historical.

Our purchases were made from the Center's own benefit auctions, commercial auctions in NYC, such as Christies and Sothebys, and from our friends and fellow artists. What began _asa casual endeavor soon became a true journey to form a collection.

We have found photographs showcasing our favorite concerns.fashion, surrealism, formalism, and fellowship.

Both of us believe in supporting contemporary image makers as well as those modern or historical photographers whose work echoes our own concerns in picture making. Our group of pictures has taken us over ten years to assemble, and it represents one of our common concerns - that of surrounding ourselves with the very best visual examples of what we both love.

An ongoing collection, we continue to look at work which brings joy and grace into our lives. -Colleen Kenyon and Marc Miller
