Statement by CER President Jeanne Allen on the Confirmation of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Washington, DC September 29,2005 Link to document On behalf of all the Directors, staff and supporters of the Center for Education Reform, I extend my best wishes to newly confirmed Chief Justice John Roberts and his family on this historic appointment. As the nation's leading education reform authority, CER helps translate ideas into action and much of that action over time has had legal implications that have reached the High Court. In addition, we believe that it is vital that all students understand the foundations of our nation's governing system and to that end, this is a major event that all schools should use to extend their students' knowledge base of civics and the political system. Ensuring our civil liberty depends upon knowledge. As the first U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Jay wrote:

"Let it be remembered that civil liberty consists, not in a right to every man to do just what he pleases, but it consists in an equal right to all citizens to have, enjoy, and do, in peace, security and without molestation, whatever the equal and constitutional laws of the country admit to be consistent with the public good." We wish Chief Justice Roberts and his new colleagues well. May they have the strength of courage and conviction to always keep paramount in all decisions the public good. ### Jeanne Allen is President of The Center for Education Reform (CER), which creates opportunities for and challenges obstacles to better education for America’s communities. Founded in 1993, CER combines education policy with grassroots advocacy to foster positive and bold education reforms. For more information, contact CER at (202) 822-9000 or send us email.
