Dear Friend of The Center,

We want to say ‘thank you’ to you, the entire Center community for the role that each of you has played in helping us successfully serve our island community, visitors and businesses over this past year. It was indeed a memorable one in which we saw record numbers of memberships, foot traffic through our doors, and volunteer hours, each of which played a role in the successful year we just completed. Truly the saying, “Many hands, make light work,” applies here!

• 308 average monthly (annual) memberships (up 28%)

• 28,097 annual “check-ins”

• 780 total participation in league sports

• 1,274 volunteer hours

The Center’s mission

The mission of The Center of Anna Maria Island is to enhance the overall wellbeing of individuals of all ages, while preserving a sense of community through creative programs and partnerships.

The Center Report 2021 - 2022.indd 4 03/11/2022 21:16

YOU MAKE US BETTER CHARTING A COURSE 2.0

The Board of Directors and administration of The Center are actively working with the community to establish a plan for the fall of 2023 that sustains the day-to-day as well as the long term financial stability of The Center.

Increasing revenues from memberships, programs, sponsorships, and grants all are critical to reducing dependency on “soft donations” to fill out The Center’s operating budget each year. We feel executing the plan we have outlined, enhanced with the vision and support of community and business leaders, will help us meet this goal.

In this past year our targeted efforts along these lines have seen program revenues rise by 65% with average monthly memberships up 68! We will release a more detailed account of our efforts to grow the successes of The Center in the coming months. We want to hear from you!

Please contact Director of Development, Jim McDaniel at jim@centerami.org for more information as to how you can get involved and share your thoughts on the proposed outline. Make us better!

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS/FITNESS

Many thanks to Gabe Fenton of the Robert and Kathleen Dobkin Intuitive Foundation, whose donation in 2021 drove numerous of the following improvements:

• New outdoor Fitness Area with Turf, freeweights, and an array of equipment designed to facilitate outdoor, heavy lifting workouts!

• Upstairs there have been new pieces of equipment added such as a Peloton bike, Ski Erg machine, a Matrix Krank Cycle, and a Precore Cable Machine.

• And….Pedaling for Parkinson’s is back after a hiatus due to the pandemic!

A grant from the Selby Foundation initiated the upstairs bathroom renovation project that will leave The Center with a new ADA compliant shower and bathroom facility! Many thanks to the Selby Foundation on behalf of the Anna Maria Island Community!!

Our $10,000 annual donors are catalysts for improvement, serving both as the backbone of our operational fundraising revenues each year while stimulating new programs.

These entrepreneurial leaders motivate other donors with challenges and often target individual areas like Concerts, Beyond the Classroom or our Seniors’ Program, helping create new offerings or enriching existing programs.

Pickleball at The Center

The Anna Maria Island Pickleball group, that calls The Center it’s home, is active year-round six days a week. The courts use a ‘round robin’ system of play which is open and inclusive. Indoor (3 courts) play renders varying weather conditions a nonissue, but outdoor play is available for the sun seekers (2 courts). As with all island activities, the player

Camp and after-care numbers were at recent highs with staff, volunteers and administration rolling up their sleeves each day to guide the group through safe, active and educational programming.

numbers vary by month and season ranging between 4 and 40!

Pickleball is the nation’s fastest growing sport and interest and participation has grown exponentially over the past several years! To learn more, visit https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Pickleball

WHAT IS

PICKLEBALL?

Pickleball is a paddle sport played with a hard wiffle ball, a net, and on a badminton sized court. Two to four players are required; four being most common. It is regularly stated that Pickleball is a cross between tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is an obsessive, social sport that emphasizes fun and camaraderie while getting your ‘buns in motion’! We invite you to come to The Center and see what all the Pickleball hype is about.
