Police Chaplain

In my role as volunteer chaplain, 2021 resembled 2020 in regard to the Covid-19 pandemic and necessary safety protocols.

Chaplain Joel Heckman

Being an immunocompromised individual, I needed to follow CDC extra protection measures in carrying out my service to the officers and communities.

During the year, although my in-person involvement remained somewhat limited due to the pandemic, I was honored to participate in ride-alongs with three officers after their field training was completed. Additionally, officers requested my assistance during four death incidents in the community. As in the past, Fire Chaplain Rev. Patricia Clearence graciously assisted when needed if I was unavailable. Sharing a meal or coffee outdoors was more the norm during my interactions with the officers as I was blessed during September to mark ten years serving as department chaplain. As required by the BCA, I completed CJIS training to ensure compliance with confidentiality in having access to the department and work stations as a volunteer. While attending officer roll calls and visiting with officers and staff, confidential information may be seen or shared and my commitment to adhering to BCA guidelines is mandatory and documented. Thankfully, none of the officers were injured or killed when an individual fired at the department striking the building and a squad! I continue to uphold the officers, staff, and governing group in prayer, mindful that those who have dedicated themselves to protect and serve us need divine intervention as well as us caring for and supporting them in these arduous times.

Respectfully,

Chaplain Joel Heckman
