The Mattie Allen Broyles Inaugural Research Chair was established in 1994 to provide new faculty members with a reduced teaching load or funds to support research at the earliest stage of their appointment at Centenary College. In a taxing period of adjustment to a new environment, the chair assists the faculty member in establishing a research program and/or accomplishing specifically research-related tasks such as preparing a grant proposal to fund the faculty member’s research/joint research with students or to help fund the research itself.
Broyles 2023-2024 Recipient:
Dr. Christine Martin
Assistant Professor of English
Dr. Martin was awarded the 2024-2024 Mattie Allen Broyles Inaugural Research Chair to pursue the reexamination, rewriting, and reconstructing of her manuscript, “Redshift” for publication as her first collection of poetry. “Redshift” examines the construction of chronic illness and disability, specifically focusing on how pain intersects with other spaces such as popular culture, gender expression, sex, religion, and geography.
Centenary College is fortunate to have so many talented and devoted professors. Each year students and faculty members select a professor who epitomizes the “best of the best” in teaching ability, excellence in advising, College service, mentoring ability, and campus leadership.
Outstanding Teacher 2023-2024 Recipient:
Dr. Rebecca Murphy
Associate Professor of Biology, Mary Amelia DouglasWhited Eminent Scholars Endowed Chair of Neurobiology
Dr. Murphy is Associate Professor of Biology at Centenary and has taught at the College since 2012. She teaches lecture and lab courses in cell biology and genetics in addition to upper-level biology elective courses while continuing to pursue her own research in plant biology, including ongoing work as a DuPont Pioneer and as a visiting research scientist at the University of Arizona School of Plant Sciences in the summer of 2019.
Centenary College provides annual Research Awards to facilitate academic and artistic research, writing, exhibition, or performance for both individual faculty members or faculty-student teams. Each year, the Faculty Development Committee and the Provost review proposals and select recipients, with the President confirming selections.
These awards are supported by the C. M. Hutchinson Family Professorships for Outstanding Scholarship.

The Charlton H. Lyons Research Award is gifted annually to a scholar in the entire range of academic or artistic fields to engage in research, writing, exhibition, or performance. Each year, faculty members are eligible to submit competitive proposals that hold the reasonable promise of publication or presentation at a scholarly conference, production of an original work of art, or significant enhancement of the applicant’s knowledge or teaching skills.
