Room to Grow.
Some students arrive at Centenary knowing exactly what they want to study, but many do not – and that’s ok! Centenary’s liberal arts curriculum gives you plenty of opportunities to explore courses and subjects that help lead you to your passions and, eventually, your major.
At Centenary, academic exploration is encouraged and rewarded. Your Centenary education includes 20 elective hours that count toward graduation, so as you work to find the perfect major or field of study, you’re still making progress toward your degree and gaining invaluable experiences for your career.
Haleigh Gangloff
Pearland, Texas
Major: Psychology
“As I was working to choose a major, I took classes that I normally would try to avoid because I knew that I would find new likes and dislikes. That process helped me find the right major for me. I also had several professors who allowed me to shadow them, which helped me experience firsthand what they do.”

Haleigh’s Tips:
• Don’t feel pressured to choose a major right away - you have time!
• Everyone moves at a different speed - don’t compare yourself to friends or peers!
• You will grow so much during this time in your life - changing your mind is ok!
Dr. Chris Ciocchetti is a professor of philosophy at Centenary and a first-year advisor.
“When I work with students who are ‘undecided,’ I encourage them to approach the decision in a different way. Rather than ask, ‘What do you want to major in?,’
I ask, ‘What problem do you want to work on? Have you witnessed an injustice that bothers you? Do environmental issues worry you? Are there people who have been forgotten that you might be able to help? What really interests or excites you?’ From there, we can really answer the question of what a student wants to do.”
