Montreal is an incredible place in which to have the privilege to make theatre. It has such a rich and unique story of its own.
Long before Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence and encountered a nation of Iroquoian people in a place called Hochelaga, the island that the European settlers chose to call Montreal had been a point of conflict, conference, creativity and exchange since time immemorial for many Indigenous peoples including the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabeg, Huron-Wendat, and Abénaki Nations. The people of the Kanienkéha:ka Nation known in English as the Mohawk — are now considered the caretakers of the unceded land and water around Montreal. In their language, this island bears the name of Tiohtià:ke, which means “broken in two,” because of the way the river breaks around it.
It is striking how the Kanienkéha language identifies the island as part of the river because it reminds us that we are all in the flow of a much larger story. This mighty river has for centuries carried people here from all over the world in search of new opportunities and new lives, and the Lachine Rapids that sit just off the western tip of this island have given pause to many of those journeys. The river has made contemporary Montreal into a vibrantly diverse city. We find that diversity inspiring because it is by telling each other our stories that we build bridges between our different cultures and languages.

January in Montreal can feel like the cruelest month. The combination of frigid weather, icy streets, world events and (of course) construction is enough to make anyone lose hope. But I heard someone say once that hope is a moral obligation. I think it is a fitting sentiment for this particular moment. Playwright Evelyne de la Chenelière has embedded hope right into the title of her charming play Strawberries in January; strawberries aren’t possible in the middle of winter without a kind of reckless hope – and what better way to express reckless hope than with music? This beautiful musical adaptation of the original play by Fred Bélanger and Audrey Thériault allows the wonderful optimism that is already threaded through the piece to really take flight.
The characters break into song as they search for the one person in the world who will love them for who they really are. Despite all the missed opportunities and lost connections that the story throws at them, François, Sophie, Léa and Robert are able to keep their reckless hope for love alive with music. May it inspire you to do the same. Thank you so much for joining us on the adventure!
Bon spectacle! Enjoy the show!
January 2002. Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui.
I was barely 20 years old and, for the first time, came upon the words of Evelyne de la Chenelière. I left the theatre with a lightness in my heart and an urge to love and to say I love you.
Strawberries in January is about all of us. Our dreams. Our hopes. Our aspirations.
And the seemingly insignificant little moments that, when strung together, make up a lifetime.
And if only everything were possible... if only we could stop deliberately complicating our lives. If we could finally learn to talk with each other. To communicate. To cherish our loves.
Eda Holmes and I have dreamed of this show for a long time. Tonight, we
offer you a taste of the sweetness this play has given us over the years – I hope it will do you as much good as it's done us.
Thanks to my faithful accomplices Audrey Thériault, Sarah Balleux and Francis Farley-Lemieux.
Thank you to the composers, actors, musicians and designers for their incredible talent. We wouldn't be here if you hadn't believed in our crazy little idea to create this musical.
Thank you to the Centaur team for welcoming a French-speaking artist into this legendary space and ensuring that together we can dream theimpossible. Our conversations in two languages uniquely, beautifully, and improbably montréalais – have both moved and inspired me. I'm eternally grateful. Bon spectacle!
