MP a letter from

Minister for veterans and people
Having served in the Royal Marines for 24 years,
I have a fair appreciation of the ups and downs of service life on forces personnel and their families.
I am also acutely aware of the vital role that families play in supporting loved ones in uniform; and underpinning their service that makes Britain secure at home and strong abroad.
So as both a veteran, and a Minister, I thank everyone involved in putting on the Celebrating Forces Families Awards. And I congratulate all the nominees and winners for their resilience, and their passion, creativity, and skill. I regret that prior arrangements prevent me from joining you this evening.
I regularly speak to people outside of the armed forces community who are unaware of the unique challenges faced by service families. So awards like this are not only a well-deserved acknowledgement of the commitment and achievements of our fantastic forces families, they also help educate the public about the barriers we face, and how we can overcome them.
But I didn’t go into politics to offer forces families warm words, I want them to have a fair crack of the whip.
That’s why the government is working to expand the Armed Forces Covenant, and establish an Armed Forces Commissioner, who will be an independent champion for our armed forces community.
It’s why we’ve expanded our Wraparound Childcare Scheme to support those overseas.
And it’s why we’ve launched an online Families Hub, to signpost organisations, guidance, and support to help navigate service family life.
It is a huge privilege of my job to spend so much time speaking with extraordinary people from all parts of our military community, and hearing the stories, and seeing the support, that make it so special. I hope, and trust, you will all have a great evening.
