INTRODUCTION

EARLY RISER ACTIVITES

Welcome to the UCL Annual Conference for Delivery Partners, 2025 This fourth annual conference has been designed to bring Delivery Partners from across our International Learning System together. This year, the conference will focus on ‘New Horizons’ and how we can enable curiosity, community and belonging in professional learning and leadership.

With a conference focus on community, curiosity and belonging this year, we are delighted to offer a range of ‘Early Riser’ activities that we hope will enable anyone interested to join and belong to a pre-conference community. These activities are not compulsory, and you may like to simply take time to enjoy a peaceful breakfast and some early morning peace and quiet instead, but we would love you to join in if you can.

As in previous years, there will be keynote input and facilitation from both UCL and Delivery Partner colleagues, many of whom have been involved in the design of the programme as part of the Conference Working Group.

Professor Qing Gu OBE FRSA FAcSS Introduced by Steve Welding, CEL Programme Leader Professor Qing Gu is Director of the supported by CEL Programme Leader Team UCL Centre for Educational Leadership and Professor of Leadership in 14.45 Concluding Thoughts Education. She is the Past Chair of the British Association of Comparative Ruth Smith, East London TSH and Hilary Adli, and International Education (BAICE), Programme Director - Teacher and Leadership a member of the Executive Committee Development, UCL of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES), an 15.00 End of conference and photo montage UNESCO Inclusive Policy Lab (IPL) expert, and a member of the Research Evidence and Impact Panel for the Leadership College for UK Government. She has directed and co-directed many government and research council funded projects in the areas of teacher professional development, school improvement, and systemic reform and change.

She was conferred the Award of Fellow of the Royal Society Arts (FRSA) in 2016 and the Award of Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) for her contribution to social science in 2022. In June 2024 she was recognised in The King’s Birthday Honours and appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to education. She features in Elsevier and Stanford University’s 2023 list of the world’s top 2% of scientists in the world.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Professor Christopher W. Day Cert. Ed, L.R.A.M., MA, D.Phil, Ph.D(h.c.); D.Litt; FAcSS.;PhD (h.c) F.R.S.A. Christopher Day is Professor of Education in the School of Education, University of Nottingham. He is Visiting Professor at a number of universities in Europe, South East Asia, and the Americas. He has worked as a schoolteacher, teacher educator and local authority schools adviser. During the last twenty years, he has led national, European and international research and development projects in the areas of teachers' work and lives, school-university partnerships, system leadership and change. Recent jointly authored publications include Educational Research and the Quality of Successful School Leadership.

Jose Emmanuel José is a language educator with experience in teaching, school leadership, and pedagogical development. Currently, he serves as the General Director of San José de Calasanz School in Algemesí and as a member of a pedagogical coordination team responsible for overseeing 20 schools across Spain. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English Philology, a Diploma in Teaching, and a Specialist Qualification in Infant Neuromental Development from the Catholic University of Valencia.

Over the past decade, he has led his school with a firm commitment to educational excellence, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

His professional journey includes previous roles as Head of Studies and as a trainer for in-service teacher development programmes organised by the Valencian Regional Ministry of Education.

He has participated in the Leadership Programme organised

by University College London (UCL - IOE, Faculty of Education and Society) in partnership with EduCaixa.

Currently, he collaborates with LID Barcelona as a facilitator in both professional training sessions and collaborative learning groups.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Evelyn Forde MBE

Andy Moor

Evelyn Forde MBE is a former President of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) and an esteemed headteacher. Recognised for her outstanding contributions to education, particularly in promoting diversity and inclusion in schools, Evelyn was awarded an MBE for her services to education. After concluding her tenure in formal leadership roles, she remains actively involved in the education sector, providing consultancy services to schools and educational bodies on issues of leadership, equity, and school improvement strategies. On 1st October she released her first book, Herstory – A leadership Manifesto.

Andy Moor is an experienced education leader. With a strong background in teacher development, leadership, and system improvement, Andy has played a pivotal role in shaping national policy implementation, including delivery of the Early Career Framework and National Professional Qualifications. Previously, he held senior leadership positions in both schools and multi-academy trusts.

Passionate about social mobility and educational equity, Andy brings deep insight into the challenges and opportunities facing today’s schools—and a compelling vision for how leadership development can drive lasting improvement.

EARLY RISER ACTIVITES 6.45am. Not-Parkrun - Katie Dallender (East Manchester TSH) Pack your trainers and join me in reception at 6.45am for an energising 5km run along the docks. It will be an out and back route; all paces are welcome.

You don't need your barcode, and I can't promise any PBs, but we'll blow away any cobwebs (that may or may not have been brought on by the night before) and be back in time for a refuel at breakfast.

What better way to start the day!

7am. Walk the Docks - Nadia Dellagana-Campbell (CEL) Join Nadia for a morning chat and invigorating stroll of the Stanley dock, part of the wonderful port of Liverpool and one of the city’s most historic areas.

Our morning walk will take us along the water towards Liverpool city centre, and the famous Beatles statue of Albert Dock, before returning to the Titanic Hotel for a delicious breakfast.

So, don your trainers, grab a takeaway coffee and hope for good weather!

We can’t promise sunshine, but we can guarantee good cheer.

Meeting point is outside Titanic Hotel main entrance.

7am. Qigong - the five animal poses - Stephen Calladine-Evans (CEL) Better known as the Five Animal Frolics these movements originated in ancient China. They are ascribed to the Taoist sage and medical practitioner, Hua Tuo. Legend tells that he designed the practice to offer a balanced combination of exercises for each animal. Together, these exercises help us to cultivate health and longevity.

All of these gentle movements are standing. There is some balancing and rotation of the spine, so this is not suitable if you suffer from vertigo or have back problems. No special clothing is required as long as you can move comfortably. Supportive footwear such as trainers is ideal.

The session will last for 20 minutes and will take place in West Bay (Corner 1).

EARLY RISER ACTIVITES 7am. Pilates for Everybody - Joanne Calladine-Evans (CEL) Join me for a gentle and energising 30-minute stretch and movement session to ease you into your day!

I’ve been practicing Classical Mat Pilates for over 15 years, and teaching for the last two—ever since we thought we might lose our beloved instructor during the Brexit shuffle (spoiler: we didn’t, but I got certified anyway!).

This session is designed for every body—no special gear or outfits needed. Just slip off your shoes, loosen whatever you're wearing for the day, and bring yourself. We'll wake up our muscles, realign our posture, and sprinkle in a few handy tips to keep you feeling balanced and grounded throughout the conference (and beyond).

Joseph Pilates swore by the mind-body connection—and a good scrub in the shower. Don’t worry, we’ll skip the sweat and stick to feel-good movement. If you have any health concerns, just let me know beforehand so we can adjust things for you. Can’t wait to see you on the mat (or the carpet)!

7am. Mindfulness Meditation - A Guided Meditation Experience - Katie Small (Inspire TSH) I have a MSc in Applied Positive Psychology (the scientific study of human flourishing) and studied mindfulness meditation and its impact on wellbeing, longevity and happiness extensively.

I am no expert in mindfulness practice but enjoy incorporating it into my life and enjoy the benefits it brings me.

I have also delivered mindfulness sessions in schools to both children and teachers. This session will give you an opportunity to take part in three ten-minute guided meditation practices. The first will focus on a mindfulness meditation to reset. The second guided meditation will focus on mindfulness meditation to alleviate stress, and the third tenminute session will focus on a savouring exercise to highlight how we can incorporate mindfulness into every aspect of our lives. This is a great way to set you up for our conference day ahead.

No special clothing or equipment needed for this session.

The session will take place in West Bay outside terrace.

8am. ECTP UCL Extend Reveal – Mark Quinn and Vicky Devaney (CEL)

Come along to enjoy 30 minutes of gentle vocal exercises and soulsoothing harmonies to warm up your voice and clear your mind before the day begins.

We’ll aim to get you buzzing with resonance that will carry you through the day, and onwards! You don’t need any previous singing experience or musical expertise: the session won’t involve reading sheet music or any sudden solo singing spots. Instead, we’ll be focusing on close listening both inwards and outwards to attune ourselves within the group and collectively create some uplifting sounds (and a well-known tune or two!).

I’ve led vocal ensembles and been a choral director for all ages and experiences - from the under 8s to the over 80s in a range of musical genres and settings. I’ve always been inspired by what can be achieved when voices combine and wholeheartedly agree with Plato that rhythm and harmony find their way into the secret places of the soul: I’d love to have you with me on the journey.

The session will take place in West Bay reception area.

An informal session aimed at those who will be delivering the ECTP from 2025.
