Colรกiste ร anna Farewell to Class of 2013

Message from principal

T

o all that is past, I say, thanks. To all that is yet to come, I say, yes. These are the words of Dag Hammarskjöld, who our History students will tell us was Secretary General of the United Nations in the 1960s and who many Irish people may remember because of the Irish soldiers who served in the Congo from 1960 to 1964 and indeed remember the word Baluba, which became a term of abuse because the Baluba were one of the tribes that attacked and killed 9 Irish soldiers in that peace keeping mission. To all that is past, I say, thanks. To all that is yet to come, I say, yes. Gentlemen, tonight is about looking back and looking forward. Looking back and saying thanks. Thanks for what? I hope it is thanks for all that you learnt at Coláiste Éanna. The book learning will fade but the other learning will remain with you for the rest of your life. The important learnings are values you first learned at home and were reinforced in Coláiste Éanna. The notion that we recognise and reject bullying behaviour, that we respect all people, for they like us are made in the image and likeness of God. The notion that you don’t give up. When you’re playing in a match and there’s minutes left that you keep the head up and play harder. The notion that friendship is to be valued and not taken for granted. The notion of being mindful of the need for spiritual reflection is important. For all that is past, thanks, for all that is yet to come, I say, yes. So what is to come? The Ireland and the world you are moving into is troubled and uncertain. You are our future and I am confident that our future is in safe hands. My confidence in you is reinforced by how you have risen to the challenge that we put before you in Sixth Year and previously. That you always strive for excellence. That you always try to improve on your previous personal best. You have done that in academics, in sports, in being a decent good person. My confidence in you will be copper fastened if you believe in yourself, if you believe in the values you learned in Coláiste Éanna. I wish you every good fortune in the Leaving Certificate Examinations. You have prepared well for these exams, your teachers have worked hard to help you, your parents have supported and encouraged you. I hope you have the self belief to turn all that effort into success (and of course the right questions come up on the papers!). I particularly want to mention those students who have made it to this point who may have found school difficult for a variety of reasons. You have shown resilience and perseverance and these are tow qualities that will stand you in good stead in the future. To the Class of 2013, thank you for the courtesy and respect you have shown me over the past two years I wish you the very best in the future.

Letter from Year Master

Message from Mr. Johnstone

A

s we enter the final phase of the school year you are all busy preparing in earnest for the Leaving Certificate Exam. As young men you are very different from the boys who

were in first year just 5 or 6 years ago and yet in some ways the very same. You have developed spiritually, socially and academically and everyone in Coláiste Éanna has played their part in contributing to those developments. The rest, as they say, is up to you. You face a future full of promise and opportunity; make the most of your many talents and gifts, be true to yourselves and others, lookout for each other and for goodness sake be on time!

Jimmy Johnstone

Reflection

Our Greatest Fear Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, Our presence automatically liberates others.
