Message from principal

Dear Sixth Years,

I

t was with a certain trepidation that I addressed you in the first Sixth Year Assembly on Thursday 25th August 2011. It was the first formal introduction to each other, and while I was certain of what I wanted to say and the tone I wanted to set, I was unsure would my message be heard. Arriving as a new Principal into a school can be difficult. I was very aware of the stature of my predecessor, Mr. John O Sullivan, in the school. He would be a hard act to follow. My message was simple. That excellence should be at the core of all we do. That we should always push ourselves to achieve beyond our personal best. This Sixth Year group has done all this and more. The first main performance indicator was the October Report Score which was a ranked score from 1 to 5 from all your teachers. Over a third of the year group scored ‘a perfect five’. You will recall Mr O’ Keeffe and I met with you in November and suggested study methods which would help your revision and work. It was very heartening to review your Christmas results and note that so many of you have shown a substantial improvement on previous exams. The ‘Mocks’ results showed a year group that was anxious to do well. While ‘Striving for excellence’ appeared to be the choice of many, I am well aware that for some of you being at school and application to academic work can be difficult and I admire your persistence. It was with great pride I watched you progress though the football and hurling competitions. I was struck with the talent, tenacity and obdurate determination that I witnessed in the Dublin finals in hurling and football. This was further reflected in the Leinster hurling final on that wet Saturday afternoon in Newbridge. I always look to the Sixth Years for leadership. They are role models for the rest of the school. This is a challenge that you as a group rose to magnificently. On the occasions we were in the Parish Church for the November Service, the Carol Service and for Catholic Schools week you behaved with great dignity and respect. Your participation in the Edmund Rice Feast day Show in May was exemplary. I thank you for the courtesy and consideration you have shown me. Along with your teachers who have worked for you and with over the past years, I wish you every success in the Leaving Certificate and I pray that the values and principles you have learnt in Coláiste Éanna will stay with you and help you to make your world a better place. Yours sincerely,

Brendan McCauley (Principal)

Letter from Year Master

Message from Mr. O’Keeffe

M

ost of the pupils graduating from Coláiste Éanna this year started with us in 2006 with Mr Wall as Deputy Principal and Mr O’Sullivan as Principal. This group were looked after by Mr Power as Year Head and Mr O’Murchu took over in Transition Year; the other Group

began in 2007 and were cared for by Mr Cunningham and Mr Canon as Year Heads. I have been Year Head since. The mix of the two groups has evolved into a very interesting, determined group of young men who did well in their Junior Cert exams and have excelled on the sport fields among other things. I would encourage you to remember the good times you had here and to use the great friendships you made here as a support for yourselves in the future. Keep in contact with each other, keep an eye on the school website, and meet up with school acquaintances and friends as often as you can. Useful contacts can be made and good fun be had at functions arranged through the school. Volunteer to help out at our very successful career nights and turn up at functions for events like the India Immersion Project. All the best we wish you well, keep in contact and don’t worry, we won’t forget the Class of 2012. God bless,   Michael O’Keeffe

Class 2012 - Farewell Speech

A

chomhscoláirí, a thuismitheoirí agus a mhúinteoirí. My name is Jamie Desmond and I have been asked to speak on behalf of the class of 2012 who will graduate tonight. This evening, we find ourselves at the end of our journey through secondary school. I don’t think that there is any doubt that it has been a very positive time in our lives. My six years in Coláiste Éanna have been an amazing experience, filled with many highs and lows. During this time I have developed many friendships which I know will last for many years. We have all grown, not only as students, but as individuals, mostly thanks to our hardworking teachers and parents. They have supported us 100% along the way and always want the best for us. On the 28th August 2006, we came together as shy first years (some of us anyway), many of us not knowing one another. Ireland was at the height of an economic boom at that time. Much has changed during our years together here in Coláiste Éanna. Over the past 6 years we’ve gotten to know each other, not only as classmates but as friends. Each of us has grown and matured into sophisticated, young adults (well, some of us!) Personally, we each share our own highlights and laughs, some of which I would like to share with you now. My very first memory is my first day here in Coláiste Éanna. This entailed an interesting and slightly terrifying initiation with the gentleman that is Mr. Kieron Durney. He might have scared me at first , and well all of us in A2, but he most certainly taught us some manners, something I’m sure our mothers are eternally grateful for. We have experienced many great moments with our teachers. When I reflect on the most memorable moments over the past number of years, the memories which most often spring to mind are those of Transition Year. Under the ever ‘’administrative’’ eye of Mr. Sean O’Mhurchú, we got the privilege to undertake many new activities, such as Bridge. When I mention Bridge, many of you will think of it as a rather plain card game for the elderly. One student in particular really took to this game. Owen Lewis developed a habit of breaking into his version of the song ‘’The Ace of Spades’’. This happened at any given opportunity, even when playing against students from other schools. Other funny memories include Mr. Darcy’s love for Doctor Dre Beats, especially when he tried out John McCarthy’s ones in class! Or his destruction of several rainforests through his relentless use of the photocopiers. Anytime he sent you on a message he would say , ‘’if anyone asks, I didn’t send you… tell ‘em Conway did’’. Many of us will remember one teacher’s accidental shredding of 25 CV’s. Mr. Kenneth Henry helped prepare me for the exams with his famous ‘exam conditions’ that were truly essential this year. What I find to be quite astonishing is how well we and our teachers have gotten to know each other. One staff member who we cannot forget and I know we won’t, is Mr Dave Grant. We have all enjoyed great moments with this man. Quite frankly, this guy is a legend, and there’s no doubting that! There is little this man can’t do, from caretaking to offering us advice on dealing with troublesome girlfriends. He’s one man Coláiste Éanna would not be the same without! I’d like to pay particular thanks to Mr. Colm Brady whose legendary quotes in Irish class will never be forgotten. In 5th and 6th year, we have been guided by the hardworking Mr. Michael O’Keefe, or as we like to call him,

‘’The Chief’’. This man has a brilliant understanding of what we are going through. I’d also like to thank all of our tutors, the lovely Ms. Denise Donlon, Mr. David Darcy, Mr. Pat Carey, Ms. Caroline Egan and Mr. Gareth Hayden, who have always been there to offer us a helping hand. I’d like to thank Mrs. Susan McCabe for putting up with all of our antics. We will always be grateful to Mr. John O’ Sullivan who was our principal from 1st to 5th year and also to Mr. Brendan McCauley who has guided us this year. I wish him the very best in his years ahead as principal of our school. Sports have played a pivotal role in our school days. I myself have been lucky to enjoy success on the sporting field. This year we won the Dublin Hurling Championship against arch rivals, St. Colmcilles. I will never forget the support we had that day, especially with all the lads starting the Poznan behind the goals! Of course, we have to thank our mascot Saifullah, who always kept our spirits high! Although this win was slightly damped by the loss of the Leinster Final, It was a personal highlight of my school year. I’d like to say a huge thank you to both Mr. Paul Conway and Mr. Colm Dalton, or Dalto as he’s known, whose hard work helped us bring home some silverware! I’d like to thank Mr. Conway who has been coaching us since 1st year and who we consider as both a friend and a teacher. I have had the privilege of playing under the two Mr. Dowlings, Brian and Ronan, who have also helped us along the way, and are currently in charge of the younger teams. Mr.Dowling taught me Biology over the past two years. He might prefer if I resisted the temptation to quote some of his finer sayings. Our footballers came inch-close to a county title this year, led by the ever competitive Ms. Julian Scanlon and the passionate Mr. Kenneth Henry, who was as hungry as a shark for silverware. Besides football and hurling, it’s important to note that this class group have also experienced success in both athletics and basketball, including a number of Dublin Championships and even an All-Ireland. The lads really couldn’t have done it without Ms. Karen Hogan, who never failed to organise a bus to the matches, even though she’ll insist to this day that she wasn’t, ‘’the organiser’’! The time we have spent here in Coláiste Éanna is something we will never forget, and I know we will all look back on it with fond memories. While looking back at all these good memories, it’s important to look forward, especially at this time of our lives. The Irish economy is only a shadow of what it was in 2006. However, armed with the confidence and skills we have developed during our time in Coláiste Éanna, we are well prepared to face any obstacles which are put in our way. We have only a very short time left before we sit our Leaving Cert. I hope everyone achieves their full potential so that they can go ahead and follow their dream. Our paths will cross many times in the future and we will always remember our days here in Coláiste Éanna. Go raibh mile maith agaibh agus go néirí an t-ádh libh go leir sna scrúdaithe. Thank you.
