s we are in the thick of March Madness, now we understand how the name came about. It’s madness this time of the year in college basketball. 64 team and it’s anybody’s game.

Over the years, we have seen our fair share of David beating Goliath. Upsets are going to happen, and the best thing about them is they occur when you least expect it. For the fan with no ties, these are some of the greatest moments in sports history. Even more so for the fans of some of these teams, as these are the events that they still live for to this very day.

That tradition is still alive in The Power of 3. We are comprised of Ester Davis, Dr. Linda Amerson and I [Valder Beebe]. Ephesians 5:25-28 “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. Wife Ephesians 5:22, 23 “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.” Wives are told to submit to their husbands. By them submitting to their husbands they are showing a proper relationship to authority. When they submit to and respect authority, it will help children understand their need to submit to the authority over them. My Wife, Son and I were having a conversation about roles and responsibilities as it relates to the Husband and Wife. I think this can also translate to business, but for now I will just stick to the family. The Husband is the head of the houeshold and everything in it. Now, when I say everything I mean everything. He leads his family according to the guidance of Jesus. So, it starts with a relationship with Jesus that puts the man on the right road. So to start if there is not a relationship with Jesus the family is already starting off on the wrong foot and the order can get disrupted easy. Not to say that it will but you are not giving yourself a good chance to lead your family right. This is the beginning of building a good fondation. Remember, God walked with Adam in the Garden of Eden, there was a relationship. God gave Adam his first Job.

Once that relationship is established then God helps that man to his helpmate. We have to understand one thing about this process. Proverbs 18:22, He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord. This is still God driving tis ship through man. It’s not a women find a husband it’s a man finding a wife. And for us men God directs our path and not ourselves. Another part of this is God brought Eve to Adam.: Genisis 2:22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. This interesting part about this process is the title of the woman before she was given a name is Suitable Helper. These are two words that should not be taken for granted. the first word is Suitable meaning right or appropriate for a particular person, purpose, or situation. Every woman that a man encounters is not suitable. The first question we need to ask ourselves is did God bring them to us. Remember, God brought Eve to Adam. The second word is Helper meaning a person who helps someone else. Is the person you are looking to be helping you or are they watching you doing things by yourself. Now does a helper take over and lead or do they follow. Because the helper needs to understand which direction to go. Then they can understand how to be a better helper. As I started writing I realize that this is not something I can just leave to just one week, this subject has more legs that I could imagen so I am going to take my time. This is the first stop on this joureny of staying in your lane. This has so many relms and levels of staying your lane. Starting with the family, the role of the Husband, the wife the kids and even the sibilings. You have a lane to stay in at work, you were hired to have a role and you must play that role for the betterment of the company or things could get complex. In your community, there is a lane you have to stay in. So once we understand our lane it might make it better. Think About it Cedric E Lyons clyons@411sportsnews.com

How good are the Rockets?

he Houston Rockets have all but locked up the top seed in the Western Conference. They lead the Golden State Warriors by four games, and own the tiebreaker. Even if the Warriors win their final 11 games, the Rockets would need to have their worst stretch of the season just to make things interesting. So the question isn’t weather or not Houston will have a better regular season. That question has been answered. The question is instead: How good are the Rockets? The statistically-minded folks at FiveThirtyEight sought to answer that question by comparing them to the team that began the current Golden State dynasty. The result: The Rockets are obscenely good.

Since 1983-84, this year’s Houston team ties for 20th among all teams in net rating (the difference between points scored and points allowed per 100 possessions) through 71 games. That’s a bigger deal than it may seem, for a few reasons. First, the teams ahead of this season’s Rockets are immensely accomplished. They include four Michael Jordan teams, three Tim Duncan teams, two Laker teams — one Shaq and Kobe, another Magic and Kareem — one Kevin Garnett Celtics team and, of course, the past three versions of the Golden State Warriors. In general, teams at Houston’s level at least win the conference. The teams that didn’t make the finals tended to have extenuating circumstances. The 2012-13 Thunder, for instance, were the top seed in the West but lost Russell Westbrook in the first round and fell to Memphis in the second. The 2011-12 Chicago Bulls lost reigning MVP Derrick Rose in the first game of the first round. And the 2015-16 Spurs faced an exceptionally high level of competition, losing in the second round to a Thunder team that went up 3-1 on the Warriors. What does this say about their ability to compete with the current iteration of the Warriors? For the most part, we’ll have to wait and find out, though the article rightfully notes that, “Nothing the Rockets could do this season would make them meaningful favorites to most NBA fans against a healthy Warriors team in the playoffs. Nothing the Warriors could do would do that, either.” For what it’s worth, their model (which pretty much only focuses on how the team has per-

March 27 - April 2, 2018

formed to this point) gives the team a 66% chance of making the NBA Finals, compared to just 17% for the Dubs. If not this year, what about next? Despite what the models say, most people still have the Warriors as favorites to repeat as champions, assuming they are able to reach full health. But even if the Dubs do emerge from the pack for the third time in four years, what happens down the line? Jason at Bballbreakdown decided to take a look at how a trade for Anthony Davis could be the key to other teams dethroning Golden State. He looked at potential trades for the Rockets, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, and Cleveland Cavaliers, to see if they could swing the superstar, and take over as NBA royalty. But if the Rockets somehow do land Anthony Davis, they will have the power to thwart the Warriors. Chris Paul and James Harden alone have mind-boggling numbers, and once you add in Anthony Davis, who should fit in perfectly, and you got a trio that can realistically beat anyone in the playoffs. With a good set of role players, on paper that’s enough to beat Golden State. Unfortunately, I doubt we’ll see any of those trades happen. Few teams have the assets to trade for him, and as fun as it would be to see Davis catch lobs from Chris Paul in Houston, New Orleans would be crazy to settle for that package. If he wants to win, he should go there; but if you want the ideal combination of trade assets with a team good enough to compete, dream of green in Boston. Figuring out the first round opponent Since the Warriors will have the second seed, they’ll face the seven seen in the first round of the playoffs. However, it’s impossible to know who that will be, given how tight the race is in the Western Conference. Anthony Slater of The Athletic broke down the candidates, to try and determine who Golden State would most like to face (not that they have a say in the matter). Slater seems to think the Denver Nuggets would make for an easy first round matchup, which I certainly agree with. They’re terrible away from Denver. They just lost in Memphis to a Grizzlies team that entered having lost 19 straight. If they somehow squeak into that seventh seed, it’d be an accomplishment for the franchise, their first playoff appearance since the pre-title, Mark Jackson Warriors beat them five years back. see Teams continued on page 7

The Cowboys are starting to make moves in free agency

he NFL’s free-agency window opened just a week ago but blockbuster moves have already been completed. High profile players have moved teams, eye watering contracts have been signed, Richard Sherman has negotiated a deal without an agent and franchises have tried to address holes in their rosters. The Dallas Cowboys, meanwhile, have sat by and simply watched it unfold.

Since placing a franchise tag on DeMarcus Lawrence on March 5 and releasing Benson Mayowa and Joe Vellano three days later, the Cowboys have done absolutely nothing in the free-agent market. Not joining the free-agency merry-goround in its first week is not a bad thing per se, assuming the franchise in question has a strong enough roster to cope without major additions. That, however, is not the case for the Dallas Cowboys, who have gaping holes in their ranks. Those deficiencies were exacerbated by the departures of linebacker Anthony Hitchens and cornerback Orlando Scandrick, who moved to the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Redskins respectively. However, the Cowboys entered the NFL’s calendar year with only $2 million worth of salary cap room, less than any other franchise. Data compiled by Spotrac.com shows Dallas is ranked fifth in the NFL in terms of cap space occupied by players no longer on the roster. The Cowboys are paying $14.8 million in so-

called “dead money,” only behind the Buffalo Bills, the Arizona Cardinals, the Chiefs and the

The Cowboys chose to franchise-tag the defensive end to prevent him from exploring the free-agent market but have until July 15 to negotiate a deal spanning over a few years to alleviate the burden on their cap. Zach Martin is entering the final year of his deal, and Dak Prescott and Ezekel Elliott will be eligible for renewal at the end of the season.

San Francisco 49ers. Hitchens moved to the Chiefs for a five year deal worth $45 million, which was out of the Cowboys’ reach, while wide receiver Sammy Watkins, the only high-profile free-agent the Cowboys were interested in, also moved to Kansas. The “dead money” issue is glaring in the case of Tony Romo, whose six year contract was worth $108 million and was restructured at various stages after he signed in 2013. Romo was forced to retire last year following a 2016 injury, but Dallas is still paying $8.9 million against the cap this year. As reported by Sporting News, the Cowboys could end up using approximately 10 percent of their 2018 salary cap by paying Lawrence, unless they can reach a multi-year deal.

However, the Cowboys are finally making moves in free agency. As expected, it’s on the smaller scale. The Cowboys and wide receiver Deonte Thompson reached a one-year, $2.5 million deal on Thursday. Thompson’s agent, David Canter of DEC Management, announced the signing on Twitter. Thompson joins linebacker Joe Thomas as the only free agent signings so far for the Cowboys. They’ve lost three players in free agency in linebacker Anthony Hitchens (Chiefs), fullback Keith Smith (Raiders) and linebacker Kyle Wilber (Raiders). Per Overthecap.com, the Cowboys must have at least $7.7 million in cap space before the draft to sign their rookie class of 10 picks.

How good are the Rockets? He goes on to predict that the team will instead face the Utah Jazz which, not surprisingly, is pretty low on the list of teams they’d like to meet. Behind JaVale’s improvement

They’d probably be in celebratory, this-seasonwas-already-a-success mode when Game 1 tips off. Much more playoff experience and hunger exist on other rosters. Entering Wednesday, the Nuggets’ had a defensive rating of 108.9, the fifth worst in basketball. Since Jan. 1, it’s 111.3, better than only the Suns and worse than the Knicks and Bulls. They’ve been a horrendous defense since the start of 2018. Horrendous defenses don’t exactly match up well with the Warriors in the playoffs.

JaVale McGee wasn’t supposed to have this kind of success with the Warriors. He was a training camp invite in 2016, who somewhat surprisingly made the team, and ended up being a factor in the Warriors run to the title. This year he started deep on the bench and was on the trading block, before eventually shaping out an important role. So how did he do it? Justin at Nylon Calculus has a pretty simple answer: Honestly, what’s helped his game the most is having great teammates. They can cover his

screw-ups on defense, and his threat as a lob target is immensely valuable with the Warriors. Opponents are obviously so concerned about shooters like Kevin Durant, and the floor is spaced so well, that there are many plays like this where he can just dive straight to the rim for an easy dunk. He’s a great target too — it’s not just luck. But he’ll still have weird plays, like this driving hook shot (who does that?) he slings at the backboard awkwardly. Defensively, his length, unparalleled outside of giants like Rudy Gobert, is a huge deterrent, and the dude can stuff LaMarcus Aldridge or a 3-pointer from Damian Lillard. But he is still not good defending in space, and he has poor footwork. I can understand why the team wants to limit his minutes, but he’s so useful on this team it would indeed be wise to reconsider how large of a role he has — and that’s a strange thing to admit about McGee. Sounds about right. Rainy day audio Most Warriors fans are caught up in some serious storms right now. If you’re stuck inside and need some entertainment, a few great Warriors podcasts came out this week. There’s Marcus Thompson II talking to Kevon Looney about Looney’s emergence this season, and Tim Kawakami talking with Steve Kerr about facing the Rockets in the playoffs. Both are well worth the listen.

3. New York Jets: Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming Allen completed 56 percent of his passes for 3,203 yards with 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions that season. The 6-foot-4, 237-pound Allen has a great skill set with tons of upside.

5. Denver Broncos: Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame Denver landed Case Keenum rather than Kirk Cousins at quarterback this offseason. Nelson would reestablish Denver’s rushing attack and help Garett Bolles protect its veteran signal-caller.

Washington Redskins: Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama Payne (6-2, 311) is a run plugger with a lot of potential to grow. Scouts were already raving about Payne’s potential in the preseason. Payne (6-2, 311) is a run plugger with a lot of potential to grow.

6. Indianapolis Colts: Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. State Chubb totaled 73 tackles with 25 for a loss, 10 sacks, three forced fumbles and two passes batted in 2017. Chubb dominated the competition in 2017, playing like a top-10 pick.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Derwin James, S, Florida State Derwin has a great athletic skill set with tremendous speed, instincts, and strength to hit. He is fast and long with coverage skills in the deep middle of the field. He can be the eighth man in the box and tackle.

Arizona Cardinals: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame flashes heavy hands to push defenders out of their gaps and open holes for his back. He also has a nice ability to bend at the knee, and that in combination with his feet, keeps him from having to reach after edge rushers.

8. Chicago Bears: Minkah Fitzpatrick, S, Alabama Fitzpatrick is an instinctive center fielder, covering receivers deep downfield. He is also fast in pursuit, tackles well in space at the second level, can come down into the box, and is able to play man coverage against tight ends and slot receivers, plus help out his cornerbacks.

Baltimore Ravens: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama Ridley reeled in 63 catches for 967 yards and five touchdowns in 2017.

411 SPORTS NFL Mock Draft 1.0 Los Angeles Chargers: Joshua Jackson, CB, Iowa Jackson (6-0, 196) enjoyed an excellent 2017 as a dangerous ballhawk for the Hawkeyes. He put an exclamation point on the year with a three-interception game against Ohio State. Seattle Seahawks: Carlton Davis, CB, Auburn Davis is a physical defender who really competes, but he does struggle with deep speed. The junior notched 36 tackles with 11 passes broken up, one forced fumble and an interception in 2017.

Atlanta Falcons: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida Bryan (6-5, 291) broke out in 2017 with 40 tackles with six tackles for a loss and four sackks

Dallas Cowboys: Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU The 6-foot-4, 218-pounder has size to him, and in 2015, he showed big-play ability by averaging 17.6 yards per catch. For the year, the redshirt freshman totaled 862 yards and nine touchdowns on 49 receptions.

New Orleans Saints: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville Jackson has a great athletic skill set, including a powerful arm that can make all throws the NFL requires and some rare passes. While his tremendous running ability gets a lot of attention,

Detroit Lions: Sony Michel, RB, Georgia The 5-foot-11, 214-pound Michel averaged 7.9 yards per carry in 2017 for 1,227 yards with 16 touchdowns.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama Evans totaled 74 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, six sacks, one forced fumble and three passes broken up. The 6-foot-2, 232-pounder possesses an impressive skill set with size and speed.

Cincinnati Bengals: Billy Price, OG, Ohio State Price (6-4, 305) impressed NFL evaluators, both with his work in fall training camp and in the games of the 2017 season. They say that Price plays within himself. They like his awareness and call him an above-average athlete.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina Hurst totaled 44 receptions for 559 yards and two touchdowns in 2017. He also rushed for a touchdown. Team sources have raved about Hurst and think that he has a first-round skill set.

Buffalo Bills: Donte Jackson, CB, LSU The 5-foot-10, 178-pounder is athletic to run the route and prevent separation, Scouts tell me that Jackson is talented, but has a ton of issues to work on, and that might include some hard lessons versus pro receivers.

Minnesota Vikings: Will Hernandez, OG, UTEP Hernandez (6-2, 340) has overpowering strength. He is very strong at the point of attack with a heavy base to help him get movement at the point of attack.

Los Angeles Rams: Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas-San Antonio Davenport (6-5, 264) possesses an excellent skill set with speed and agility. He has length and athleticism to play on the edge in the NFL, but needs to learn more pass-rushing moves. Carolina Panthers: Sam Hubbard, DE, Ohio State The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder has a great skill set, but never produced up to it. Hubbard possesses a serious combination of size, speed, and athletic ability that should help him to rise during the pre-draft workouts,

Philadelphia Eagles: Kolton Miller, OT, UCLA Miller has good length to him, athleticism, and the agility to stay on the edge in the NFL.

The main objective of a shooting guard (or “SG”) is to put up points for his team, and some of these NBA shooting guards have put up more points in a season that other shooting guards will hope to score in their whole career. Future hall of famers like Dwayne Wade are currently giving legends like Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler a run for the title of top NBA shooting guard, but for now, Air Jordan still reigns supreme on the roster of the NBA’s best shooting guards. Who are the best shooting guards in NBA history? What skills do the greatest shooting guards have? Are shooting guards the best players in the NBA? This greatest shooting guards list takes the opinions of NBA fans and attempts to name one man the greatest NBA shooting guard in history.

Michael Jordan also known by his initials, MJ,is currently the principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets. Jordan played 15 seasons in the NBA for the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards. Jordan joined the Bulls in 1984 as the third overall draft pick. He quickly emerged as a league star, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, demonstrated by performing slam dunks from the free throw line in slam dunk contests, earned him the nicknames Air Jordan and His Airness. He also gained a reputation for being one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a “threepeat”. Although Jordan abruptly retired from basketball before the beginning of the 1993–94 NBA season and started a new career playing minor league baseball, he returned to the Bulls in March 1995 and led them to three additional championships in 1996, 1997, and 1998, as well as a then-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995–96 NBA season. Jordan retired for a second time in January 1999, but returned for two more NBA seasons from 2001 to 2003 as a member of the Wizards. Kobe Bryant played his entire 20-year career

He led the NBA in scoring during two seasons, and ranks third on the league’s all-time regular season scoring and fourth on the all-time postseason scoring list. He holds the NBA record for the most seasons playing with one franchise for an entire career and is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Bryant is the first guard in NBA history to play for at least 20 seasons.

Dwyane Wade Jr. plays for the Miami Heat. After a successful college career at Marquette, Wade was drafted fifth overall in the 2003 NBA draft by Miami. In his third season, Wade led the Heat to their first NBA Championship in franchise history and was named the 2006 NBA Finals MVP. In the 2008–09 season, Wade led the league in scoring and earned his first NBA scoring title. With LeBron James and Chris Bosh, Wade helped guide Miami to four consecutive NBA Finals from 2011 to 2014, winning back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013. After 1½ seasons away from the Heat with the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers, Wade was traded back to Miami in February 2018. A 12-time NBA All-Star, Wade is Miami’s all-time leader in points, games, assists and steals, shots made and shots taken.

College career While playing at DePaul University, he averaged 24.5 points over three seasons with the Blue Demons, and in 1981 was The Sporting News College Player of the Year. He also was the USBWA College Player of the Year and James Naismith Award winner in 1980, and a 2 time member of The Sporting News’ All-America first team. As a freshman in 1978– 1979, he led the Demons to the Final Four, where they lost to Indiana State, led by future Basketball Hall of Famer Larry Bird. The Chicago native played on the same DePaul team as future NBA star, Terry Cummings, and found himself in the national spotlight during his three years at the university. He averaged 24.0 points as a freshman in 1978–79, and led the Blue Demons to the NCAA Final Four. Over the next two seasons he scored 26.8 and 23.0 points per game, respectively, and was named College Player of the Year in 1980–81. Aguirre was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic basketball team but was unable to compete due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott. He did however receive one of 461 Congressional Gold Medals created especially for the spurned athletes. Aguirre left De Paul

Beginning with the 1982–83 season Aguirre reeled off six straight campaigns in which his average topped 22 points per game. In the first of those seasons he scored 24.4 points per contest, tops on the team and sixth in the league. The Mavericks continued their ascent, bettering their record to 38-44 to finish ahead of Utah and the Houston Rockets in the Midwest Division. During the 1983-84 NBA season Aguirre averaged 29.5 points per game, second in the league to Dantley’s 30.6 ppg. He finished the season with 2,330 total points. Although Aguirre was the Mavericks’ main weapon, he was helped by the emergence of Rolando Blackman (22.4 ppg) and the contributions of role players Brad Davis and Pat Cummings. Dallas finished second in the Midwest at 43-39, and the team made its first playoff trip, beating the Seattle SuperSonics in the opening round before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference semifinals. In each of the next two seasons the Mavericks posted identical 44-38 records. In 1984–85 they made a quick exit from the playoffs, bowing to the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round; in 1985–86 they defeated Utah and then took the Lakers to six games in the conference semifinals. Aguirre averaged 25.7 and 22.6 points for those seasons. In 1986–87 and 1987–88 he made the All-Star Team and averaged 25.7 and

While Aguirre’s time in Dallas was full of high-scoring efforts and playoff visits, the Mavericks were postseason underachievers (their only Western Conference Finals visit was the 1988 loss to the Lakers), and Aguirre had repeated conflicts with coach Dick Motta and players like Blackman, Derek Harper and James Donaldson. Then-team owner Donald Carter was a huge fan of Aguirre and hoped he would remain in Dallas for his entire career, but eventually conceded that the gulf between Aguirre and the team was unbridgeable. Midway through the 1988–89 season Aguirre was traded to the Detroit Pistons for Dantley, who was also one of the league’s top scorers, and a first round draft pick on February 15, 1989. Detroit Pistons After Aguirre joined them, the Pistons won the NBA title in 1988-89 and repeated as champions in 1989–90. He showed he could blend into a successful team by taking fewer shots, playing hard on defense, and not complaining when Rodman’s minutes increased greatly over time. In the 1990 playoffs, which culminated with a five-game Finals win over Portland, Aguirre averaged 11.0 points. Aguirre played three more seasons with the Pistons in an increasingly limited role, due to both Rodman’s play and his own age and injury issues.

ark Aguirre was chosen as the first overall pick of the 1981 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks after playing three years at DePaul University. Aguirre played in the NBA from 1981 until 1994 and won two championships with the Detroit Pistons after being sent to Detroit from Dallas in exchange for Adrian Dantley. Aguirre was a three-time All-Star for Dallas.

Aguirre averaged 20 points per game over the course of his 13-year NBA career. He was selected as the first overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1981 NBA draft and remained with the Mavericks until 1989. In his first season Aguirre was limited to 51 games and averaged 18.7 points, second on the team to Jay Vincent (21.4 ppg). The Mavericks improved by 13 games in the win column and finished ahead of the Utah Jazz, but were still twenty games behind division-leading San Antonio Spurs.

25.1 points, respectively, during the regular season. The Mavericks won more than 50 games each year. The 1987–88 edition of the franchise went 53-29, beat Houston and the Denver Nuggets in the first two rounds of the postseason, then extended the Lakers to seven games before losing in the Western Conference Finals. It was the longest postseason run in the Mavs’ eight-year history. Both Mavericks single-season scoring records still stand. His 13,930 points as a Maverick rank third in the franchise’s history, behind Rolando Blackman’s 16,643 points and Dirk Nowitzki’s 30,260 (updated June 14, 2017).

Los Angeles Clippers In 1993, the Pistons released Aguirre. After he cleared waivers the Los Angeles Clippers signed him for $150,000 for a partial campaign in 1993–94. Through the 1993–94 season Aguirre had accumulated 18,458 points for a career average of 20.0 points per game. He retired in 1994. Personal life Aguirre has been married to Angela Bowman since January 1988.[4] Aguirre, whose father was born in Mexico, at one point considered playing for team Mexico at the 1992 Olympics. The Greatest Upsets in Sports History

Cover Story

The game started defensively with the first half having four separate ties. UMBC would not lead until just before the midpoint of the half before a Virginia steal would tie the game up for the second time. Virginia would go on a 7–1 run over a four minute period hold a six point lead late in the first half before UMBC managed to tie the game at 16–16 before the final TV timeout of the half. UMBC would take the lead twice before halftime, but Virginia was able to tie the game up at both points.

A

s we are in the thick of March Madness, now we understand how the name came about. For the fans of the team that was upset, some of these tragic events still haunt them, making them only wish to never have to experience something as upsetting as that ever again. So, when a #13 Buffalo beats a #4 Arizona, I figured we have our upset of the year. That was not the case by far. A #13 Marshall beats and #4 Witcha State and I asked myself how much more can we take. Then the sky fell and this is what I consider the biggest upset in sports history. UMBC pulls off the first upset of a No. 16 seed over a No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament history with a historic 74-54 win

over Virginia. On March 16, 2018, during the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, the University of Virginia (Virginia) Cavaliers played a college basketball game against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Retrievers at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Cavaliers, who were seeded first in the South regional bracket and first overall in the NCAA Tournament, faced the Retrievers, who were seeded 16th in the South regional bracket and ranked 63rd overall (out of a field of 68). Virginia and UMBC would compete for the right to face ninth-seeded Kansas State, which had already won their first-round game against Creighton earlier in the day. The Retrievers defeated the Cavaliers by a score of 74–54, thus becoming the first 16-seed to defeat a 1-seed in the history of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. UMBC earned its first NCAA Tournament win in school history. With Virginia set as a 201⁄2 point favorite heading into the game, UMBC›s victory was the second-biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history behind Norfolk State’s defeat of Missouri in 2012 when 1 Missouri was a 21 ⁄2 point favorite. Virginia finished their season at 31–3.

www.411sportsnews.com

Coming out of halftime, the Retrievers would go on an early 7–2 run before Virginia would use their first timeout of the game. Another UMBC run of 10–4 would force the Cavaliers to use a second timeout to force the TV timeout. An 11–7 run by Virginia allowed for them to get within eight points before UMBC was forced to use their timeout to start another TV timeout. A 5–0 run by the Receivers within a minute would force Virginia to use their final timeout to receive a TV timeout. Despite the break, fouls by Virginia would contribute to UMBC making four free throws and scoring a layup on a missed free throw would allow the lead to be extended to 19 points. The final two minutes would see the Retrievers extend their lead by another point to finish with the game 74–54. The Cavaliers, who led the NCAA this season in scoring defense at 53.4 points per game, were outscored by the Retrievers 53–33 in the final twenty minutes. The twenty point loss was the largest deficit the Cavaliers suffered their entire season, as was the only time this season they allowed at least 70 points. UMBC’s Jairus Lyles, who scored 28 points while battling through cramps late in the second half, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. With that being said here are some other sports upsets that have taken the sports world by storm. Breaking the Color Wall Don Haskins will go down in history for many reasons, one of which will be when his Texas Western basketball team took down the Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA championship game. The team took them down 72-65, cementing themselves in college basketball history. Beating the basketball powerhouse wasn’t the only

big thing that happened that day, as Haskins broke the color barrier by having African Americans starting in every position for him. And, as a side note Pat Riley played for Kentucky

but they came out and they fought that road. The game was not easy, but the Wolfpack came out on top, taking the title in a 54-52 victory for the ages. After gathering the ball nearly 30 feet from the basket, Dereck Whittenburg launched a desperation shot that fell short of the rim. Olajuwon hesitated in fear of a goaltending call, allowing Lorenzo Charles to catch the ball and dunk it for the 54-52 victory. One of the indelible images in tournament history is of winning coach Jim Valvano running onto the court after the game ended looking for Whittenburg.

Don Nelson was the former coach of the Dallas Mavericks, but eventually stepped down from his position to return to his position as general manager. After one season of sitting out, he came back to the coaching ranks and took over the Golden State Warriors. With the Warriors, he would take them into the playoffs during the 2006-07 season as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. Can you guess who No. 1 was? Yep, the Mavericks. The Warriors took out his former squad in six games. By the way the Mavericks had one of the best records in the NBA.

The NC State Wolfpack taking down Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and the Houston Cougars in 1983 is one of the biggest moments in upset history. Wolfpack coach Jimmy Valvano had his team marching into the NCAA championship game with a tough road ahead of them,

Of all the research I did, and from what I had set in my mind before going into this list, the United States hockey team defeating the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics topped every list. The Soviets were the favorites heading into this game, as they were a team full of tradition and experience. The Americans, on the other hand, were made up of a bunch of random players, most of whom were college players or nobodies. Still, somehow, they were able to take Lake Placid by storm and take down the mighty Soviets in what will go down as the greatest sports upset of all time.

Tyson takes it on the chin Going into his 1990 fight against Mike Tyson, Buster Douglas was a 42-to-1 shot to win the match, but all it took was a single shot from his first to knock out the big mean man. Tyson was by far one of the most feared boxers around, but Douglas was not afraid of the man that actually bit off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear back in 1997. Douglas took out Tyson, and then he took his heavyweight title. 72 Dolphins Sends Drinks to New York

The New England Patriots were looking to complete their perfect season, but it was the New York Giants who would play party pooper at the 2007 Super Bowl. This game of course had one of the most iconic catches in sports history, as David Tyree caught a pass by pressing the ball against his helmet. This catch would lead the Giants onto their game-winning drive, where they took the game with a 17-14 lead. started (12-point favorites), as this team was proven under coach Bill Belichick with quarterback Tom Brady. The Giants, on the other hand, were nobodies, but they became somebodies with this win. There is nothing more upsetting than losing a shot at perfection.

San Francisco had won four Super Bowls in the 1980s with Joe Montana at quarterback, and now wanted to establish its dominance in the 90s with Steve Young behind center. Young had guided the 49ers to a 14-2 regular-season mark and was poised to take his team to the big game, but along came a 13-3 Dallas squad that featured fiery head coach Jimmy Johnson and plenty of attitude. The Cowboys defense collected four takeaways, while quarterback Troy Aikman threw for 322 yards and Emmitt Smith ran for 114 yards, to engineer this road win. In Super Bowl XXVII, Dallas beat Buffalo for its first of three titles in a four-year span.

Portraits of African American Historical Figures, Part II

By Shellye Lyons

I

n the last issue, we shared some of the gentlemen who have portrayed historical figures in African American biopics. But what about the Ladies? We can’t forget them!! Here are some movies about African American women starring some of our favorite actresses:

was a singer, dancer and actress, but also a fierce advocate of civil rights and recipient of the Croux de guerre for assisting the French Resistance during World War II. Lynn Whitfield won an Emmy for her portrayal of this remarkable woman.

Guild Award for her performance.

The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992). Based on the life of: The Jackson 5. When the story of the Jackson family was ready to be brought to the small screen, producers of the miniseries realized they needed more than just two hours to tell the whole story. Based on Katherine Jackson’s autobiography My Family, The Jacksons: An American Dream focused on one of the most successful musical families in history and the massive success of the group The Jackson 5. With an all-star cast that included Vanessa Williams, Holly Robinson Peete, Billy Dee Williams, Angela Bassett and Terrence Howard, the miniseries remains one of the most popular musical biopics of all time. The Rosa Parks Story (2002). Based on the life of Rosa Parks. Angela Bassett is used to portraying real-life people for the silver screen. In 2002, CBS aired The Rosa Parks Story, which focused on the woman who refused to give up her seat to a white passenger and helped kick the Civil Rights movement into high gear with the Montgomery bus boycott. It also delved into her past and highlighted the segregation in the South, particularly in Alabama. Cicely Tyson played Parks mother in the television biopic. Bassett won an NAACP Image Award for her portrayal of Parks.

Lady Sings the Blues (1972) Based on the life of: Billie Holiday. Starring: Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams, Richard Pryor, James T. Callahan, Scatman Crothers. A musical legend in her own right, Diana Ross here portrays the life of Jazz royalty Billie Holiday. The film follows Holiday’s troubled adolescence as a cleaner and prostitute in a Harlem brothel to her rise in popularity as a night club performer, as she is propelled towards stardom. Based on Billie Holiday’s 1954 autobiography, the movie does not shy away from the performer’s battle with addiction.

hat’s Love Got to Do with It (1993) W Based on the life of: Tina Turner. Starring: Angela Basset, Lawrence Fishburne. Angela Basset won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as rock star Tina Turner. The film focuses on Turner’s infamous relationship with Ike Turner (cw for domestic abuse) and her battle to keep the rights to her stage name as she gains confidence as an independent performer.

HE SAID; SHE SAID Winter Harris You’re amazing until you tell them NO. Leon Pressley Well the trick to his rejection is to never talk to just One women i never do you don’t know if she is going to like you or not now if you talk to three women your chances of getting a yes is up 70 percent so at this point do you really care if the first women tells you no go somewhere heck no im like ok bye never put all your eggs in one basket thats how you set yourself up for failure hey i got to protect my heart ..so i talk to several untill one is really serious then the rest i just stop alltogether ..i just disappear without a trace lol Roger Williams There’s this misconception that’s been around for generations: that women never really mean it when they say “no.” That at the very least, a woman’s “no” really means “try harder” because they are “playing hard to get” or “they don’t’ know what they want.” I am here today, to tell you, Internet friends, that no ALWAYS means no. Raymond Pretlor Men don’t like to be rejected or turned away. I believe that’s the bottom line. It’s a sensitive element we live with and may trigger attack if he isn’t mature enough to practice self control. Roger Grant That’s a desperate mentality. They are just showing their true disposition. I’d be like bet!!! NEXT...IJS Cheyenne Bostock Men need to get better at mastering the art of persuasion. Women love to be seduced, but there’s a time and a place for everything. A man must know when that time/place is and when that time/place isn’t and be at peace with it.

Robbie Nelson @Winter some women crack me up I can care less personally, Im just getting back in the dating game and some don’t have no chill. Just like them I don’t want to talk to them either they are bringing me no value. So as I get in my Ferrari and ride away. Don Nash Some guys just take rejection hard... and then there are some women that demonstrate little grace when turning a man down. I think it’s one thing for a woman to decline an offer of “interest “ in which case he’s just got to deal with it. However, if he just wants to get to know you (assuming he’s not a weirdo, stalker, strange odd etc.) and the two of you share common grounds where your paths may cross - why not just define the boundaries? I only say that because... it’s one thing to reject his romantic interest but another thing to say, “I don’t want to know YOU!” Again, assuming he ain’t cray cray. Facebook and other social media platforms adds another interesting layer. When you are “high profile” and folks read your postings, watch your videos etc., they develop a false sense of knowing you from engaging with you daily. So to say, I don’t want to get to know you can show up to a man kinda harsh. I think when you have a dialogue about dating you set a welcome mat for people to learn and hopefully become more “datable.” That being said, weirdos definitely need to take their rightful place in that Wackadoodle bucket and be managed out. Im sure you get your share of those guys tho. ! Hoping I didn’t cross any boundaries that you’ve established for this dialogue. Respectfully. Winter Harris Thanks for your feedback Don Nash. I think at the end of the day, regardless of why a person say’s NO, no means NO. People don’t owe us anything. For the record, I’m nice the first time. I only get snippy when they get ugly. At that point, all bets are off. Again, no one owes us anything, not even a smile. I think the risk you run when people think you’re high profile, is safety. Even the most sane can be crazy. I have kids. Everybody doesn’t deserve access to you, I’m not sorry for having boundaries. If I’m kind, accept it, but that does not mean I have to entertain your inbox conversations or give you my number. If so, I would be talking to 100 or more people at a time. Aint nobody got time for that, LOL
