Ranking the 10 Greatest Point Guards in NBA History

The 70 best point guards were ranked based on several evaluations, including championships won (particularly if they were key cog on team), individual accolades (MVPs, All-Star appearances, etc.), win shares, statistical production, longevity and overall reputation. For active players, metrics were used such as how they have performed compared to others at the current stage of their careers. Also, it’s worth noting that some players (such as Allen Iverson) were viewed more as shooting guards despite playing some point guard in their careers. Therefore, players who fit into that category were not ranked in this list.

One reason we waste time worrying and fretting is because we don’t really know about our inheritance in Christ. Yet another reason for our worrying ways is this: We don’t believe in our inheritance. That was the problem of Joshua’s ancestors. They really didn’t believe that God could give them the land of Canaan. The victories of the Hebrews could have begun four decades earlier, a point God alluded to in His promise to Joshua: “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses” (Joshua 1:3). The reminder? I made this offer to the poeple of Moses’ day, but they didn’t take it. They chose the wilderness. Don’t make the same mistake. Joshua didn’t. Much to his credit he took God at his word and set about the task of inheriting the land.

But Dick’s owns dozens of its Field & Stream stores, where there has been no such ban in place. In a letter released Wednesday, Stack wrote, “’’We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens. But we have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America -- our kids.” Nickolas Cruz, the gunman who killed 17 people in Florida, mostly students, had purchased a shotgun at a Dick’s store in November 2017, Stack said. “It was not the gun, nor type of gun, he used in the shooting,” Stack wrote. “But it could have been. Clearly this indicates on so many levels that the systems in place are not effective to protect our kids and our citizens.” Stack on Wednesday called on elected officials to ban assault-style firearms, bump stocks and high capacity magazines and raise the minimum age to buy firearms to 21. He said universal background checks should be required, and there should be a complete universal database of those banned from buying firearms. He also called for the closure of the private sale and gun show loophole that waives the necessity of background checks. Stack said on “Good Morning America” that Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. is prepared for any potential backlash, but will not change its policies on gun sales. Walmart Inc., also a big gun seller, stopped selling AR-15 rifles and other semi-automatic weapons in 2015. I lok for others store to follow suite

Jerry Jones still fighting with the NFL and Goodell

ith the support of many N.F.L. owners, Commissioner Roger Goodell is prepared to escalate his public feud with Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and long one of the most influential people in the league, by ordering him to pay millions of dollars for his efforts to derail negotiations to renew Goodell’s contract and for his outspoken defense of a star player who was suspended, according to five league officials with direct knowledge of the situation. The punishment will be issued in the coming weeks by Goodell, who will declare that Jones’s actions were detrimental to the league, which rarely shows such acute signs of acrimony among owners and the commissioner’s office. Goodell has been reluctant to be seen as exacting retribution for the way Jones tried to sabotage his contract talks, but he was urged to bring the penalties by several owners who believed that Jones had crossed an unspoken boundary by threatening his colleagues. In November, Jones hired the high-profile lawyer David Boies and said he was prepared to sue the six owners on the league’s compensation committee, which had been working for months on extending Goodell’s contract. Jones also lobbied loudly for running back Ezekiel Elliott not to be penalized, and reportedly tried to influence league officials deciding his case. Elliott had been suspended by the league for six games before the season after the N.F.L. investigated domestic-assault allegations. Jones will be ordered to pay the legal fees that the committee incurred defending itself, as well as the legal expenses the N.F.L. spent defending its decision to suspend Elliott. A spokesman for the Cowboys said the team was unaware of the impending penalties and did not immediately have a comment. A spokesman for the N.F.L. said the league had no comment. The genesis of the issue dates back about a year. In the months before Elliott, the Cowboys’ star running back, was suspended in August, Jones said publicly that his player did not deserve to be penalized after a former girlfriend accused him of domestic violence in an incident that predated his entry into the N.F.L. Jones also tried to influence one of the league’s top investigators, according to ESPN. Elliott was not arrested or charged by prosecutors, but the N.F.L. used statements by a former girlfriend of Elliott’s, along with photos of injuries he was accused of inflicting upon her, to justify the suspension. After Elliott was suspended, Jones continued to support him. Elliott took his case to federal court, where his appeals were ultimately denied. At the same time, Jones, who was a nonvoting

March 1 - March 8, 2018

member of the compensation committee, tried to persuade many of the league’s owners that Goodell’s contract extension should be far less generous than the one that was being proposed. Jones was aware as early as August that only about 12 percent of Goodell’s compensation was guaranteed, and the rest would be based on whether he and the league met a variety of financial targets. Jones, however, continued to argue that Goodell was being overpaid. Though some owners were sympathetic to his stance, many of them backed away from supporting him when he threatened to sue the members of the compensation committee. The compensation committee includes some of the most powerful owners in the league, and close confidants of the commissioner. The members are the owners of the Chiefs, Falcons, Giants, Patriots, Steelers and Texans. Soon after Elliott exhausted his appeals, Jones hired Boies, who has over the years represented the N.F.L. In early November, Jones told the six owners on the committee that he had hired Boies and was prepared to take them to court to stop them from finalizing Goodell’s deal. That set off an embarrassing volley of letters between lawyers for the compensation committee and Jones, and turned the issue of Goodell’s contract extension into a public talking point just as the league was grappling with the fallout from player protests during the playing of the national anthem. Jones ultimately backed down on his threat to sue, but the ill will remained. At a league meeting in Irving, Tex., in December, Jones was upbraided for his behavior by many owners, including some who rarely weigh in strongly on league issues. At the same meeting, with the support of most owners, Goodell was given a five-year extension. Under its terms, he has the possibility of earning as much as $200 million.

Mavericks Under Fire, Hire Cynthia Marshall as Interim CEO

M

ark Cuban is used to being in charge. He’s built his larger-than-life reputation on being a hands-on personality, taking pride in knowing the minutia of his projects and especially that of the Dallas Mavericks. Monday afternoon, however, when newly-hired interim CEO Cynthia “Cynt” Marshall was introduced at a press conference, it was clear that Cuban wasn’t in charge. Marshall was.

Resources and chief diversity officer at AT&T before she retired in 2017 to launch her own consulting firm. With more than 30 years of telecommunications experience, in addition to HR, she has held positions in operations, network engineering and planning, and regulatory/external affairs. Admittedly, however, Marshall says she has never experienced sexual harassment herself. “From the minute I walked into AT&T in 1981, when it was just ‘the phone company,’ safety was critical to the culture,” Marshall recalls. “It took precedence over all else. We need that same kind of mindset everywhere in corporate America. Some think it’s just the nature of work, the nature of companies, for members of certain groups to be harassed and made to feel uncomfortable or compromised in some way. No! It is not. In almost 36 years of work, I never felt I was being sexually harassed. That is how I know it is possible.”

Marshall joins the Mavericks with the mission of cleaning up the organization as faces its biggest internal challenge. Last week, Sports Illustrated released a scathing report detailing a pervasive culture of alleged sexual assault and domestic violence within the Mavericks’ offices. The report names three employees—president and CEO Terdema Ussery, vice president of human resources Buddy Pittman, and Mavs.com beat writer Earl K. Sneed—as primary purveyors of a “toxic culture.” None of them are with the team any more. (You can read all of MMB’s coverage of the scandal here.) Even though Marshall’s tenure with the team just began, she is already hard at work. ”Although we are in the early stages of our response, we’ve identified three immediate areas of focus: the investigation, culture transformation, and operational effectiveness,” Marshall said in a prepared statement Monday with Cuban by her side. “Independent investigators are in the process of conducting interviews with current and former—we’re covering both—current and former employees. The purpose of the interviews is to make sure all issues and allegations are surfaced and addressed. We need everything to come out. Allegations will be thoroughly investigated and any required disciplinary action will be administered swiftly.” Marshall joins the Mavs after 36 years with AT&T, most recently as senior vice president of human resources and chief diversity officer before her retirement from the company in 2017. Her no-nonsense language in the press conference speaks to her career with AT&T. While there, Marshall led efforts to overcome unconscious biases, develop women leaders, and create a highly lauded culture of diversity and inclusion. “Cynt is not coming in here to be the savior of the world,” Marshall said, speaking in third person. “What I have learned is that it takes a team, it takes a village, and we will get this done. We’re talking about 140 people. But a culture transcends even beyond just our workplace.” This speaks to her overall attitude on how workplaces should function and her approach to fixing the Mavericks. That, as well as a conversation with leadership at AT&T, is what drew Cuban to Marshall and led to him calling her. After talking on the phone, the two eventually met in person. After that meeting, it wasn’t long before Marshall agreed to come on board because she was convinced the Mavericks aligned with her beliefs. “This is my opportunity to be part of the solution with a lot of other people who are trying to help with this issue,” Marshall said. “…And I told [Cuban], ‘I have to think about this. I have a brand. I worked very hard for the brand I have, and I can’t attach my brand to something I can’t trust, and something that is not reliable, and something that’s—I don’t mind flawed, because we’re all flawed to some degree—but if it lacks integrity I

6

ANSWERING THE CALL FROM CUBAN A San Francisco Bay area native, Marshall was on a visit to her hometown when her phone rang. It was a former colleague, calling on behalf of Maverick’s owner, Mark Cuban, who was eager for the opportunity to speak with her directly. Cuban was facing a crisis, the colleague told her, adding, “You are uniquely positioned to be helpful to him.”

can’t attach my brand to it.’ And by the time I left his office and spent the day with some folks, I said ‘I absolutely will attach my brand to this organization.’” Marshall also met with head coach Rick Carlisle for 15-20 minutes Monday, and he introduced her to the players as well. After the meeting, it was clear that she left a positive impression on the Mavs coach. “She’s going to be great,” Carlisle said. “She’s dynamic, she’s charismatic, and she’s extremely smart. And she’s intolerant of any bullshit. That’s pretty clear.” For his part, Cuban sat mostly silent during the 24 minute press conference, a stark contrast to the boisterous persona that he has cultivated since purchasing the Mavericks in 2000. He meekly deferred repeated questions about his knowledge of events to Marshall while offering that everything will come out once the investigation, headed by Evan Krutoy and Anne Milgram of Krutoy Law, is complete.

In a week dominated by headlines on the horrific Parkland, Florida, school massacre and Russian indictments, Marshall had not yet heard about the scathing expose on the Mavericks organization published by Sports Illustrated, tipping off the latest sexual harassment scandal in corporate America—and one of the worst. The results of a monthslong SI investigation paints the Mavericks environment as one of the most outrageous and egregious exposed to date. While one former female employee reportedly likened the organization to “a real-life Animal House,” more than a dozen current and former Mavericks employees corroborated the comparison, illuminating it in great detail with jarring accounts of a culture that was at best uncomfortable for women, at worst untenable—and that had gone unchecked for far too long. Not surprisingly, most SI sources went unnamed due to fear of humiliation or retaliation. However, the characterization of a misogynistic corporate culture riddled by both subtle and overt inappropriateness, as well as outright predatory and abusive physical and sexual behavior, quickly became clear.

“I am determined, and Mark is determined, that the Dallas Mavericks will be the standard,” Marshall said. “We’re laying out a vision that says by 2019 the Dallas Mavericks will be the standard. We will be leading the way in inclusion and diversity.”

Now living in Dallas and immersed in running her own consulting firm, Marshall has never worked in sports and didn’t know the Maverick’s owner. “I don’t even watch Shark Tank,” she noted. But she took Cuban’s call and was immediately impressed by his candor.

CHANGING WHAT IS POSSIBLE

“He was as sincere as he could be about wanting a culture change in the organization,” she said. “Everything he told me in that first call came out in the press over the next few days. He was completely transparent.”

Named as one of the Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Corporate America by BE in 2015, Marshall is a quick thinker, straight talker, and highly respected leader who was senior vice president, Human

The Sport Specific Approach to Strength Training Programs - By: Jillian Anderson

port-specific strength training programs are fundamental to an athlete’s development and success. Long gone are the days when coaches shunned weight lifting for fear that it might hinder the performance of fine skill and correct technique. It’s now accepted that high levels of strength are a prerequisite to superior speed, power, strength endurance and overall sporting performance.

Bodybuilding and Olympic weightlifting programs still dominate many athletes’ training regimes. While these types of training have their place, strength training for sport consists of a more refined approach than simply lifting heavy weights as many times as possible. This article outlines the concept and the benefits of a periodized strength training plan. This is the most effective approach to strength training for sport. Not only does it help in the prevention of over training, it gives the athlete the best chance of peaking physically at the right time. The principle of specificity states that training should mirror the demands of the sport as closely as possible (1). This applies not only to way the

body’s energy systems and neuromuscular system is taxed (through manipulation of intensity and rest intervals etc) but also to the movement patterns of each exercise.

Bodybuilders tend to isolate a muscle group and work it to exhaustion. Athletes on the other hand should train movements rather than muscles. A simple example is the vertical jump. The muscles involved in this action (calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteals etc.) could be trained separately with exercise choices such as toe raises, leg extensions, leg curls, kickbacks and so on. A more appropriate exercise however is a barbell squat, which closely matches the movement pattern of the vertical jump. Taken a step further, jump squats are even more specific to jumping and it’s not surprising that they increase vertical jump performance to the greatest extent (4). Athletes must divide their time and energy amongst various types of training – endurance, strength and power, speed and agility, tactical etc., and find the time to recover! By choosing only the most appropriate resistance exercises volume can be kept to a minimum saving energy for other types of training.

Many of the sample strength training programs within this section of the website consist of relatively few exercises. This is deliberate and while it may seem unbalanced at first glance, it takes into account other training the athlete is expected to complete. Basic Strength Basic strength training programs adapt the body for more strenuous resistance training later on. It’s objective is to prepare the body by targeting all of the major muscle groups, tendons, ligaments and joints helping to prevent injury (2). The less experienced an athlete is, the more time they will need to spend developing foundational strength before progressing onto more advanced forms of resistance training. But even experienced athletes should set aside some time during the year to complete a phase of basic strength training. It can help to redress some of the muscle imbalances that inherently occur with competitive sport. For more on this article www.sport-fitness-advisor.com

What We Know About Each School Implicated in the FBI’s College Basketball Investigation

T

he college basketball world was turned upside down on Sept. 29 when the the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York laid out findings from an F.B.I. investigation that uncovered mass corruption, bribery and wire fraud involving some of the sport’s top programs.

• Munish Sood — the founder of Princeton Capital, an investment services firm that, among other ventures, manages professional athletes’ money.

Four assistant coaches were charged with varying violations: Tony Bland of USC, Emanuel “Book” Richardson of Arizona, Lamont Evans of Oklahoma State and Chuck Person of Auburn. No universities nor head coaches have been charged, but the investigation is ongoing, and multiple schools (most notably, Louisville) have been implicated even if no individual from the program has been charged...yet.

• Jonathan Brad Augustine — Program director for the Orlando-based (and Adidas-sponsored) 1Family AAU team.

It’s a massive story. The U.S. House’s Energy and Commerce Committee has even requested a briefing on the matter.

Also important to note is the fact that there are three different criminal complaints.

First, let’s outline who the notable non-coaches named in the various suits are. Each of the following men are facing federal charges relating to bribery. • James “Jim” Gatto — Adidas’ global sports marketing director for basketball. • Merl Code — a former player for Clemson who is now affiliated with Adidas.

• Christian Dawkins — Former agent for ASM Sports

• Rashan Michel — Founder and owner of Thompson Bespoke Clothing, a high-end manufacturer based in Atlanta. He was reportedly indicted by a federal grand jury Nov. 7.

• United States of America v. Lamont Evans, Emanuel Richardson, Anthony Bland, Christian Dawkins, and Munish Sood • United States of America v. Chuck Connors Person and Rashan Michel • United States of America v. James Gatto, Merl Code, Christian Dawkins, Jonathan Brad Augustine, and Munish Sood The scandal has received an overwhelming

amount of coverage, with every piece focusing on a different aspect of the investigation. The legal documents outlining the situation are filled with legal jargon. This is an attempt to compile the most important information pertaining to each university and present it in a digestible way. LOUISVILLE - What the complaint says “In or around May of 2017, at the request of at least one coach from University-6, DAWKINS, James Gatto, a/k/a “Jim,” MERL CODE, MUNISH SOOD, the defendants and other agreed to funnel $100,000 (payable in four installments) from Company-1 to the family of Player-10. Shortly after the agreement with the family of Player-10 was reached in late May and early June, Player-10 publicly committed to University-6.” And, later: “Shortly thereafter, Coach-1 left the room, and DAWKINS, AUUSTINE, UC-1 AND CW-1 proceeded to discuss the Player-10 scheme described in paragraphs 27 to 35, supra, and, in particular, the involvement of Coach-2 in securing funding from Company-1 for Player-10’s family. DAWKINS, who had been negotiaating directly with Player-10’s family, noted that Company-1 had originally agreed to pay a “certain number” to Player-10’s family, but that a rival athletic capparel company was “coming with a higher number,” such that DAWKINS needed to “get more” from Company-1

The Greatest Athlete From 10 States in America

W

hen you think of American athletes, often a professional team or a university comes to mind. But what about states? Where do the best athletes in American history come from? We’ve done the research and, after much debate, have picked the greatest athlete from every state in America. Don’t see your state on the list? Not to worry: We’re still in the process of completing the list, so make sure to come back frequently and check for updates.

By Brad Kallet from http://definition.org/ First-team All-Pro, and two-time Offensive Player of the Year.

4. Georgia - Jim Brown

He’s led the league in yards three times, touchdowns four times, and passer rating twice.

Jim Brown was born in St. Simons, Georgi, before moving to Manhasset, New York, when he was 8 years old.

HONORABLE MENTION: Tiger Woods, Cheryl Miller, Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Mark Spitz, Barry Bonds

We just know there will be plenty that you don’t agree with — after all, there’s no right answer! — so make sure to let us know what you think we got right, and what you think we got wrong. And what about your state? Did we pick the right athlete? We’re interested to hear if you agree. When you’re finished, make sure to SHARE this compilation with sports fans from sea to shining sea!

A three-sport athlete at Syracuse University, Brown excelled at football, track and field, and lacrosse. (Some consider him the greatest lacrosse player of all-time.) The big, bruising Brown played fullback in the NFL, where he was a Rookie of the Year, ninetime Pro Bowler, eight-time First-team All-Pro, and three-time MVP. The future actor led the league in rushing yards eight times and rushing touchdowns five times, and is in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. HONORABLE MENTION: Herschel Walker

3. Michigan - Serena Williams Though Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and lived in Compton, California, for some time, she spent most of her childhood in West Palm Beach, Florida.

1. Alabama - Willie Mays Arguably the greatest baseball player of alltime, “The Say Hey Kid” was born in Westfield, Alabama, and attended Fairfield Industrial High School in Fairfield. During his 22-year career in the majors, Mays was a 24-time All-Star, Rookie of the Year, two-time MVP, 12-time Gold Glove Award winner, four-time stolen base leader, and batting champion.

The most dominant female tennis player of the Open era — and probably of all-time — Williams is second only to Margaret Court with 23 major singles championships. She has earned career Grand Slams in both singles and doubles — Williams has won 14 doubles majors — and has spent significant time at world No. 1 in both. Serena also has excelled in Olympic competition, winning four gold medals (one in singles and three in doubles). HONORABLE MENTION: Deion Sanders

The center fielder was a prototypical five-tool player: He could hit for average, hit for power, run, field, and throw.

A decorated Olympian, Joyner-Kersee took home two gold medals at the 1988 Games in Seoul (heptathlon, long jump), and another gold at the 1992 Games in Barcelona (heptathlon). She also owns a silver medal (heptathlon, 1984) and two bronze medals (long jump, 1992 and 1996). From 1987-93, Joyner-Kersee also won four gold medals (two for long jump and two for heptathlon) at the World Championships and another gold medal in the long jump at the Pan American Games. Rounding out her remarkable athletic career, Joyner-Kersee played professional basketball for the American Basketball League’s Richmond Rage in 1996.

Mays is fifth on the all-time home run list with 660, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. HONORABLE MENTION: Bo Jackson, Hank Aaron

6. Indiana - Larry Bird Larry Bird was born in West Baden Springs, Indiana, and grew up in the nearby town of French Lick. He attended Springs Valley High School and played college ball at Indiana State.

2. California - Tom Brady New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was born in San Mateo, California and attended Junípero Serra High School.

An NBA and Celtics legend, Bird was a Rookie of the Year, three-time NBA champion, two-time NBA Finals MVP, three-time MVP, 12-time All-Star, and a nine-time All-NBA First Team selection. A member of both the College Basketball and Basketball

Brady, also a star baseball player who was drafted by the Expos in the 1995 MLB Draft, often is regarded as the most talented and accomplished QB in NFL history. He’s won five Super Bowls — and was the MVP in four of those games — and is a three-time MVP, 13-time Pro Bowler, three-time

Jahlil Okafor Should Be On Your Radar RIGHT NOW!!! JAHLIL OKAFOR CENTER / BROOKLYN NETS me embrace my creativity in that situation.

I

f you really want to understand me, we gotta start with Air Bud. See, most people, they know me as a Chicago kid. But when I was three years old? Nah. I was living in Moffett, Oklahoma. Middle of nowhere. Cows, horses, farmers — real, real country. This was around 1999. And around ’99 … guess what movie had just come out on VHS. Yup. The original. The all-time classic. Listen, Air Bud was like … Air Bud was like The Godfather to me as a kid. I’d run that VHS tape back maybe three times a day. A movie about basketball and dogs — two of my favorite things in the world? It didn’t get much better. And while we already had a ball around the house … we didn’t have a dog. So you know I was begging my mom for one all the time. Then one day, out of nowhere, my mom comes up to me and she says, “Jahlil — guess what’s arriving today?” (Dramatic pause………) “Your puppy. They’re dropping him off later.” I was going wild. You couldn’t contain me. I remember I was jumping up and down in front of the window, looking out at the street for the car to come. And I can still picture this little old lady, pulling up real slow — and then walking to the front door with this cardboard box. I see this little Great Dane puppy with its head popping out the top, like, “What’s up?”

Just picture growing up in Moffett, Oklahoma, with like 180 people in the whole town — and your mom is telling you, straight up, “You can be anything you want to be. You can be anything you want to be. You can be the first black president.” I was lucky, man. My mom truly believed in me. She believed in me no matter what. But then a couple of years later, when I was nine years old … something happened that changed my life. My sister and I, we were just chilling on the couch, watching TV. She’s three years older, so it was always this battle for the remote. She wanted BET. I wanted Animal Planet. After a while, we struck our usual compromise — flipping back and forth during the commercials. Could have been any other day. All of a sudden, though, my mom starts breathing really hard. Like, really hard. She had been saying she had bronchitis … but you have to remember, I’m nine. I don’t even know what that means. She keeps breathing harder and harder, and honestly we thought she was playing. She was constantly joking around — never in that manner, but still. I assumed it was one of her jokes. That was just her way, you know? Doing all kinds of stuff to make us laugh. Like I said, she was Queen Latifah.

So right on the spot, man, I just blurt out — “This is Hector.”

To try to call her out on her bluff, I threatened to eat her Oreos that were in the kitchen cabinet. That should do it, I figured. But she just kept breathing harder, and harder, and harder. Pretty soon, my sister and I began to realize she wasn’t joking. It was total shock.

I don’t even know where it came from.

Oh no. This is real. We have to call 911.

Turns out Hector was a girl. My bad. But I was so dead-set on the name, and my mom was so cool about everything, that she just let it go. All praise to my mom for letting

I just remember frantically screaming and running for the phone. But the thing was, the phone in our house wasn’t working at the time. So we had to run across the street to our neighbor’s house to call the ambu-

And I’m looking back at this puppy … and I’m so excited.

After that … it’s all kind of a blur. I remember the ambulance finally speeding up to our house. I remember the paramedics ripping her shirt open. I remember them taking her away on the stretcher, and then putting her in the back of the ambulance. I guess I was too young to really know what all of it meant — but when they came, I just remember thinking to myself, Alright, they’re getting her help. This is crazy … but she’ll be O.K. Then we got to the hospital, and were sitting there for what seemed like hours — until eventually one of the doctors came out to the waiting room. And I’ll never forget how they said it: “She didn’t make it. Your mom … she didn’t make it.” I had this huge pit in my stomach. I was crying. I was experiencing all of these complex emotions that I had never felt before. And yet the memory that sticks out the most — it’s so simple and specific: I remember going into my mom’s hospital room, and rubbing her hair. Just slowly, gently rubbing her hair. I remember how soft it felt — and how I kept going in and out of the room … back and forth to her, lying there … just looking at her, staying with her, not wanting to leave. I remember how it felt like that was the one thing I could do in that moment to make things better — not leave. Because leaving, you know … that would be accepting that she was gone. And so I just kept on rubbing her hair. I stayed pretty much the whole night, until they took me home. I remember when we got back to the house, me and my sister were there with my two younger brothers … and it all felt empty. It felt so dark. At some point, I grabbed my basketball and I went outside. And I just started shooting.

Player Profile

That was my mom, though. She was so fun to be around. It’s hard to find the right words to describe her … but maybe picture Queen Latifah. Every time I see Queen Latifah on TV, I see my mom. Same personality. Same energy.

lance.

I don’t know why … I just did. We had an old basketball hoop outside the house, and I shot on it all night. I was on autopilot — and I didn’t stop. For months, pretty much, I didn’t stop. That was like … that was my sanctuary out there. Then the year after my mom passed, our family got split up. I went to Chicago to live with my dad, and my sister stayed behind to live with my grandma. Going from Moffett, Oklahoma to the South Side of Chicago was … well, it was exactly what you’d think. I had visited Chicago a few times before in the summer — but this time it was for real. It was permanent. It was pretty mind-blowing for a nine-year-old kid. I don’t know why this sticks out to me, but I just remember getting there and thinking, “Man, what’s up with all these cars?” See the rest of this story on 411sportsnews.com

Ranking the 10 Greatest Point Guards in NBA History The 70 best point guards were ranked based on several evaluations, including championships won (particularly if they were key cog on team), individual accolades (MVPs, All-Star appearances, etc.), win shares, statistical production, longevity and overall reputation. For active players, metrics were used such as how they have performed compared to others at the current stage of their careers.

Cover Story

Also, it’s worth noting that some players (such as Allen Iverson) were viewed more as shooting guards despite playing some point guard in their careers. Therefore, players who fit into that category were not ranked in this list.

#1 Magic Johnson Johnson won five NBA championships and captured three regular season and three Finals MVP’s. He also was a 12-time NBA All-Star, including in 1992 when he won the game’s MVP award just a few months after his startling retirement announcement. Johnson’s unique blend of size, vision, instincts, charm and leadership was unrivaled during his generation. Many feel Johnson’s Game 6 performance during the 1980 NBA Finals when he posted 42 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists as a rookie while playing center in place of the injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the single greatest performance in league history.

#2 Oscar Robertson Robertson is arguably the greatest allaround player in NBA history. He repeatedly stuffed the stat sheet – Robertson averaged a triple-double in his second year in the NBA and flirted with doing the same in four of his first five seasons – and he was a stifling defender. Robertson won an NBA title in 1971, earned the league’s MVP award in 1964 and was named to 12 NBA All-Star Games, three in which he claimed the game’s MVP trophy.

#3 Stephen Curry Curry is arguably the greatest 3-point shooter in NBA history. He’s about to move into seventh place on the all-time 3-pointers made list, and barring any unforeseen setbacks in his career will break the record currently held by Ray Allen. Curry already has two NBA titles and two league MVP’s under his belt, and he will make his fifth straight All-Star Game appearance this season. He’s also one of only seven players to shoot at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent from the free throw line in a season.

#4 Isiah Thomas Thomas was arguably the game’s most prolific player in the late 80s and early 90s. He reached his peak when Magic Johnson

12

and Larry Bird were slowing down and before Michael Jordan fully blossomed. That’s not meant to be a knock on Thomas, who was an All-Star in his first 12 seasons in the league and was one of the craftiest, toughest and most dynamic players in NBA history. He was the leader of two championship teams, and delivered one of the most inspiring performances in the Finals in 1988 when he played through a badly sprained ankle in Game 6 and scored 25 of his 43 points in the third quarter.

#5 Jason Kidd Outside of Magic Johnson and maybe LeBron James, nobody controlled the tempo of a game better than Kidd, who was a triple-double machine and had an incredibly high basketball IQ. He was special in the open floor and seemed to always make wise decisions. Kidd led the league in assists in five out of six seasons during the pinnacle of his career, and he guided the Nets to back-to-back NBA Finals in the early 2000s. He won a title with the Mavs in 2011 and was named an All-Star 10 times throughout his career. He is second all-time in assists behind John Stockton.

#6 Jerry West Basketball fans from older generations are probably reading this ranking and thinking

March 1- March 8, 2018

to themselves, how in the world is West not higher than No. 6 on this list? I’ve heard some people who watched West in person back in the day say they’ve never seen anyone more gifted in the history of the game. West certainly deserves to be in the discussion for a higher ranking considering he was an All-Star in all 14 of his NBA seasons, averaged better than 30 points four times and during the 1965 playoffs averaged 40.6 points per game.

nals in 1997 and 1998.

#13 Chris Paul #14 Gary Payton #15 Lenny Wilkens #16 Nate Archibald #17 Derrick Rose #18 Jo Jo White #19 Dave Bing #20 Dick McGuire #21 Kyrie Irving

#7 Steve Nash What really separates Nash from most of the other point guards on this list is that he was both an elite 3-point shooter and passer. He shot better than 40 percent from beyond the arc in 14 of his 18 NBA seasons, and he led the league in assists five times during a seven-year span. Nash also gets the edge over a few guys ranked behind him on this list because he was a two-time league MVP and was part of the 50-40-90 club a remarkable four times.

Westbrook’s spectacular 2016-17 season catapulted him into the top 10 of this list. He set the record for most triple-doubles in a season with 42 of them and became the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double for an entire season. Westbrook is arguably the most explosive and agile point guard in NBA history, delivering jaw-dropping plays on a nightly basis. He will play in his seventh All-Star Game this season, already earning the MVP award of the midseason classic twice before. He has a league MVP under his belt (2017), and helped the Thunder advance to the NBA Finals in 2012.

#22 Larry Costello #23 Chauncey Billups #24 Tim Hardaway #25 Dennis Johnson #26 Penny Hardaway #27 John Wall #28 Mark Jackson #29 Maurice Cheeks #30 Isaiah Thomas #31 Sam Cassell #32 Earl Monroe #33 Mark Price #34 Michael Ray Richardson #35 Rajon Rondo #36 Kevin Johnson #37 Damian Lillard #38 Steve Francis #39 Norm Van Lier #40 Deron Williams

#10 Bob Cousy

#8 John Stockton Stockton is the NBA’s all-time assists and steals leader, so it’s understandable if some think he should be placed higher on this list. Not winning a title or capturing a league MVP probably hurts his ranking a tad, but that doesn’t take away from just how special he was throughout his storied professional career. Stockton led the NBA in assists nine straight times from 1988-1996, and played all 82 regular season games in 16 of his 19 seasons. He was co-MVP with teammate Karl Malone in the 1993 All-Star Game, and played in back-to-back NBA Fi-

#41 Terrell Brandon

Nobody has more NBA titles on this list than Cousy, who won it six times during his illustrious career with the Celtics. He also was the league’s MVP in 1957, and was named an All-Star 13 straight times. Playing on those stacked Boston teams that also featured Bill Russell, Sam Jones, Tom Heinsohn and Bill Sharman helped make the game even easier for Cousy. But, that doesn’t subtract from all that he accomplished. Other guards that didn’t make the top 10 but are well respected: #11 Tony Parker #12 Walt Frazier

Black History Moment: Notable African American Men in Entertainment By Shellye Lyons

A

s with the notable African American women in entertainment, our men dominate the industry in music, film, and TV! The following represents some of the most notable African American men in entertainment as described in Anythinklibraries.org, biography.com, and Wikipedia.

1. Louis Armstrong was a trumpeter, bandleader, singer, soloist, film star and comedian. Considered one of the most influential artists in jazz history, he is known for songs like “Star Dust,” “La Vie En Rose” and “What a Wonderful World” and his graspy voice and stage personality are almost as easily recognizable as his trumpet sound. He was nicknamed “Satchmo,” “Pops” and, later, “Ambassador Satch.” An all-star virtuoso, he came to prominence in the 1920s, influencing countless musicians with both his daring trumpet style and unique vocals.

2. Ray Charles, the Pioneer of soul music, was completely blind by age 7. It was at this time that he also developed his talent as a singer and pianist. Musicologist Henry Pleasants writes

March 1 - March 8, 2018

of him: “Ray Charles in a master of sounds. His records disclose an extraordinary assortment of slurs, flides, turns, shrieks, wails, breaks, shouts, screams and hollers, all wonderfully controlled…”

3. Sam Cooke, a founder of American soul, his music helped pave the way for other iconic black musicians such as Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Cooke also founded a record label and publishing company, taking an active role in music business. He was a trailblazing recording artist who helped shape the soul and pop scene with hits like “You Send Me,” “Chain Gang” and “Sad Mood.” Working with other artists on his label, Cooke helped develop the careers of Bobby Womack and Billy Preston, among others.

4. Duke Ellington – You can’t discuss jazz without discussing Duke Ellington. An originator of big-band jazz, Duke Ellington was an American composer, pianist and bandleader who composed thousands of scores over his 50-year career. A major figure in the history of jazz music, his career spanned more than half a century, during which time he composed thousands of songs for the stage, screen and contemporary songbook. He created one of the most distinctive ensemble

sounds in Western music and continued to play what he preferred to call “American Music”, rather than jazz until shortly before his death in 1974. His influence in the jazz genre is one of the strongest.

5. Nat King Cole was an American Singer, Actor, Television Personality, Television Actor, Film Actor, and Pianist who first came to prominence as a jazz pianist. He owes most of his popular musical fame to his soft baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres. In 1956, he became the first African-American performer to host a variety television series, and for many white families, he was the first black man welcomed into their living rooms each night. He has maintained worldwide popularity since his death in 1965. He’s best known for his soft baritone voice and for singles like “The Christmas Song,” “Mona Lisa” and “Nature Boy.”

6. Gordon Parks was a prolific, world-renowned photographer, writer, composer and filmmaker, a self-taught artist who became the first Af-

HE SAID; SHE SAID

How important is it that your partner have their own purpose to pursue or is it OK if they just support yours?

By: Winter Harris Andre McCarthy: My response is very much so case specific..based on my experiences and observations I think that too many are focused solely on doing their own thing.... And miss out on the fulfillment of collaborative efforts... Just my thoughts Da’Shaun Joseph: Apologies I got side tracked. My stance comes from being in relationships where I was always supported but was never able to return the favor. It actually made me quite uncomfortable. Andre McCarthy: No worries. I was doing the daddy/daughter pick up/snack/fold clothes/etc (some of us are real single daddy’s) but I digress. That’s an interesting angle. Was your man annoyed by your lack of support? Da’Shaun Joseph @Andre McCarthy I didn’t lack support, I didn’t have anything TO SUPPORT. As great as I think I am , having someone always supporting and attending my events and not being able to do the same made me feel very awkward. Heck I wanna get dressed up and be YOUR PLUS ONE or brag on YOU. I didn’t like it always being about me ( believe it or not lol) Andre McCarthy: Ahhh... Thanks for the kind clarification... Gotcha... Well I was in a..situation..and the lady I was with never (besides the obligatory services) came to see me play. The different programs, alone. So I guess I want that support to be throughout the relationship... proudly support and humbly expecting the same... Does your man have something to support now?

Da’Shaun Joseph: @Andre McCarthy Ha! Very smooth transition. I am single so I am my support. I guess my point in all of this is there should be a healthy balance of both. Picking one or the other may not keep anyone happy but for sooo long. Andre McCarthy: Inquiring mind was wondering... But I’m no where near close enough to even really be talking bout much more than this thought provoking, positively discussed post. What do you have going on in the DMV? Stefan Reggie Sanders: LaToure BOTH Winter, and same goes for me. NaTasha Houser-Pendleton Very. I want us to both have goals and visions and we grow individually and collectively! I was married to a dream killer for 17 years. He had no motivation and he wanted me to only work my office job and never grow. I am 40 and finally pursuing my goals and I pray that the man that finds me will be just as motivated. Derek Callier: I want my Partner to have their own goals...own money...and we have a shared account...I want them to be independent... GOD forbid something should happen to me! Cordele Rolle: Doesn’t matter to me, just raise our children right and have dinner ready. Cookie-Queenin Kim Person: Great question. I’m generally satisfied with where I’ve gotten in life. Purpose-wise, mine will be connected with the future partner’s purpose or vision. My goal/purpose is to help make his vision happen.L Winter Harris: I dont believe in having a kept man, so imma need you to be doing something major with your life. Otherwise, I will be bored out of my mind. Mutual support is the standard.

HE SAID; SHE SAID Tobie Famusipe: @Winter for me I’m a strong advocate for supporting your lady or Man, in her goals and dreams and it’s reciprocated back to him. I don’t agree with the notion of one sided goals. When two people are together in my opinion that’s a team and players have to support each other to attain the team goals and individual goals. Dee Morris: A little of both Gabrielle-Esther Unique Love: Its Very Important to me because I Know that God didnt Create the BOTH of us with alllllll of these Gifts,Anointings,Talents, and Passions just to SIT on them and Not PURSUE,Advance, and Occupy THEM.So we’ll BOTH Need to be Pursuing our Purpose while Building,Supporting,Encouraging, and Lifting each other up in Love Selflessly. Roger Grant: As a man either is fine. A woman should be a helpmeet. For a woman I’d think it’s a must. Sub-mission means to come under a mission. If a man doesn’t know his purpose/mission what exactly is a lady submitting to? I think it’s critical for a man to know his mission... it’s hard to lead and to expect someone to follow if ya don’t know where you are going!

Derrick Hunt: Depends. Because all have a purpose..and sometimes one’s purpose is to support the other who a bigger purpose.. And if both have big purposes then the God I serve will ensure they compliment each other’s.. God is not the author of confusion..so if there is conflict.. one may need to go a question if they called and chose..OR Was it really God?..(but this is how I see it..even if not an opinion) Vanady Enjoli: Seeing as i don’t believe God bypasses people when it comes to gifts i need him to be pursuing purpose before Stevie R. Butler: Everyone needs a purpose. Don Nash: Very important!!! It’s too hard to be with with someone that is still searching for the purpose of their existence. So many times people abandon their own purpose and hide behind supporting you. Stephanie Hart: It’s ALWAYS important to support one another but still be great on your own. Brooke Fairley: It’s super-duper important!! God gave us both purpose & it has to be fulfill weather we single or married. Jennifer Sutton: They need to have their own as well as I have mine. The Greatest Athlete From 10 States in America Halls of Fame, Bird also won a gold medal with the U.S. men’s basketball team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. 7. Iowa - Dan Gable A legend in the state of Iowa, Dan Gable grew up in Waterloo before attending Iowa State University. In addition to his prowess on the mat during his high school years, Gable also was an allstate swimmer, an excellent baseball player, and a quarterback. In three years at Iowa State, Gable established himself as perhaps the greatest collegiate wrestler of all time. He went an almost unthinkable 181-1 — his lone loss came in his final match — for the Cyclones and led the team to two NCAA titles. Gable also won a gold medal at the 1971 Wrestling World Championships, and a year later he won an Olympic gold medal in Munich in the lightweight division. 8. Kansas - Barry Sanders When it comes to raw talent, there may have been no one better at the running back position than Barry Sanders. Sanders, who stood just 5’8″ but was built like a truck and could fly, was born in Wichita, Kansas, and attended Wichita North High

School. In a 10-year NFL career — following a brilliant stint in college in which he won the Heisman Trophy — Sanders never missed the Pro Bowl. He was a Rookie of the Year, a six-time First-team All-Pro, an MVP, and a two-time Offensive Player of the Year. He led the league in rushing yards four times and in rushing touchdowns once.

10. Louisiana - Bill Russell Another Celtics legend on this list, Bill Russell was born in West Monroe, Louisiana, and he lived there until his family moved to Oakland when Russell was 8 years old. Standing 6’10” and weighing 220 pounds, Russell

Kentucky - Muhammad Ali In addition to being perhaps the greatest boxer and competitor of all-time, Muhammad Ali was a cultural icon. Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky, where he attended Central High School. Famous for his speed, power, and trash-talking abilities, Ali backed up his bold words in the ring. He posted a career record of 56-5, including 37 knockouts, and became the first fighter to win the heavyweight title three times. In 1960, as a light heavyweight, Ali took home the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Rome.

Black History Moment: Notable African American Men in Entertainment rican-American photographer for Life and Vogue magazines. He also pursued movie directing and screenwriting. In 1969, Parks became the first African American to direct a major Hollywood movie, the film adaptation of The Learning Tree. He wrote the screenplay and composed the score for the film. Parks’s next film, Shaft, was one of the biggest box-office hits of 1971. Starring Richard Roundtree as detective John Shaft, the movie inspired a genre of films known as blaxploitation. Isaac Hayes won an Academy Award for the movie’s theme song. Parks also directed a 1972 sequel, Shaft’s Big Score. His attempt to deviate from the Shaft series, with the 1976 Leadbelly, was unsuccessful. Following this failure, Parks continued to make films for television, but did not return to Hollywood. Parks has published several memoirs and retrospectives as well, including A Choice of Weapons. 7. Singer and bandleader Cab Calloway learned the art of scat singing before landing a regular gig at Harlem’s famous Cotton Club. Following the enormous success of his song “Minnie the Moocher” (1931), Calloway became one of

the most popular entertainers of the 1930s and ‘40s. He appeared on stage and in films before his death in 1994, at age 86, in Hockessin, Delaware. During his lifetime, the standout musicians he performed with include saxophonist Chu Berry, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and drummer Cozy Cole. In 1993, President Bill Clinton presented Calloway with a National Medal of the Arts. 8. Gregory Hines studied dance from an early age and performed with family members at the Apollo Theater. In the 1970s he launched a Broadway career and later starred in movies including The Cotton Club and White Nights. Hines grew up as a member of Hines, Hines, and Dad alongside his father and older brothers. He studied dance with master tap dancer Henry Le Tang and spent much of his early career dancing at the Apollo Theater, gleaning knowledge from such fellow performers as the Nicholas Brothers and Sandman Sims. 9. Sammy Davis Jr. overcame prevailing racism

to establish himself as an entertainment legend, becoming a successful comedian, actor, dancer and singer. As part of the Rat Pack, with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, Davis was known for films like Ocean’s 11 and Sergeants 3 along with his partying ways. As his fame grew, his refusal to appear in any clubs that practiced racial segregation led to the integration of several venues in Miami Beach and Las Vegas. A Tony-nominated performer, Davis was also associated with popular recordings like “I’ve Gotta Be Me” and the No. 1 hit “The Candy Man.” 10. Chuck Berry, considered by many as the “father of rock ‘n’ roll,” was one of the most influential rock ‘n’ roll performers in music history. He’s known for songs including “Maybellene” and “Johnny B. Goode. In 1985, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. A year later, in 1986, he became the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s first inductee. Perhaps the best measure of Berry’s influence is the extent to which other popular artists have copied his work. The Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones and the Beatles have all covered various Chuck Berry songs, and Berry’s influences—both subtle and profound—pervade all of their music. He is remembered as a founding father of rock ‘n’ roll, whose pioneering career influenced generations of musicians. Other notable men in entertainment I look forward to researching are: Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier, Richard Pryor, Harry Belafonte, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, and Berry Gordy.

A historic voice in the civil rights movement, Malcolm X was and continues to be a fascinating yet controversial figure. He gave voice to the anger and frustration that African Americans experienced during the tumultuous 1950s and 60s, gaining a reputation for his fiery rhetoric and spellbinding speeches. THE LOST TAPES: MALCOLM X relives his pivotal years with rarely seen footage and audio tapes, including never-before-seen footage of Nation of Islam rallies and recordings made at the Audubon Ballroom on the day of his assassination. Jennings shared with the audience how the film presents insight into Malcolm X using media reports from the time, and the moments that ultimately shaped his legacy as one of the most important figures in American history. PIZZA HUT, NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE SCORE FOR FANS AND PIZZA LOVERS BY ANNOUNCING NEW OFFICIAL PIZZA SPONSORSHIP OF THE NFL

T

he Fun Begins with 2018 NFL Draft in North Texas The National Football League and Pizza Hut are getting an early start on celebrating the upcoming 2018 NFL season with news that Pizza Hut is the Official Pizza Sponsor of the NFL. The multi-year agreement will offer Pizza Hut a vast array of exclusive marketing rights, benefits and designations that will unmistakably connect the brand with the NFL and its teams, players, events, partners, properties and the many NFL experiences that capture the passion of consumers and football fans from all over the world. “We know many of our fans enjoy pizza while watching NFL games and we are thrilled to have Pizza Hut, an industry leader and one of America’s favorite brands, as an official league sponsor,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “With a focus on family, friends and fun, Pizza Hut has the creativity we are looking for in a partner and we look forward to working together with them to make the at-home NFL experience more exciting than ever for our fans.” Pizza Hut has a long-standing tradition of connecting with football fans via promotions, experiences and excitement that’s good for the whole family, and this partnership will bring more scale and grandeur to the relationship between the company and fans. The NFL partnership will first unfold for Pizza Hut, appropriately, during the 2018 NFL Draft to be held near its global headquarters in

North Dallas. “Pizza Hut has a history of bringing more entertaining food and experiences to the pizza occasion and we plan to continue that through our exclusive partnership with the NFL,” said Artie Starrs, President, Pizza Hut U.S. “NFL stadiums are packed every week but tens of millions of fans are also watching the game at home. We have an unmatched ability to bring those fans closer to the sport thanks to the power of our 7,200 restaurants and 150,000 football-crazed team members. The capacity for what’s possible is endless and that’s going to make this league partnership great fun for Pizza Hut, the NFL and everyone who loves pizza and football.” The Pizza Hut partnership with the NFL includes collective use of all 32 team marks. It also involves the NFL working closely with Pizza Hut to facilitate local, exclusive team partnerships. Pizza Hut will have the opportunity to leverage game tickets and unique fan experiences to all NFL games in marketing and promotional campaigns throughout each year. “The opportunity to align in an official capacity with the NFL is a tremendous opening for a brand and product that is so neatly aligned with the football-watching occasion like pizza and Pizza Hut,” said Andy Rosen, Pizza Hut franchise owner and Franchise Board of Directors Chairman. “Our system is aligned behind and thrilled about this part-

nership. No one better understands the essence of Pizza Hut, including our consumers, than our group of owners and team members.” Pizza Hut Innovation From game day to family game night, Pizza Hut is committed to making it easier for consumers to get a better pizza via digital and delivery innovations. Over the last year, Pizza Hut has introduced a number of digital enhancements, including a Delivery Tracker that allows users to track their pizza from order to delivery, and exclusively receive updates via text message. In addition, Pizza Hut fans can take advantage of one-button reorder functionality, visible promise time, and voice ordering through a variety of devices. More recently, Pizza Hut launched Hut Rewards, the only national pizza loyalty program that offers points for every dollar spent on food online. For delivery, the company developed a new algorithm that drastically improves the accuracy and reliability of deliveries, reimagined its delivery pouches to keep pizzas up to 15 degrees hotter and is currently the first pizza company piloting beer and wine delivery in the U.S. In January, Pizza Hut announced a plan to explore pizza delivery via self-driving vehicles. Pizza Hut has more than 7,200 restaurants in the U.S., and 16,700 worldwide in over 100 countries.
