We want to make sure you have a fantastic experience at City College and the best person to ensure we are providing this is you. We will ask for your feedback in a number of ways including online surveys, tutorials and focus groups. To make your time at City College as productive and enjoyable as possible we will ask for your feedback and offer help where possible.

Life at City College is not all work and no play! Our Student Union building is the ideal place to hang out with friends, relax, listen to music, watch TV and play pool.

Student Council The most important person to our college is you, the student. You’re at the centre of what we do and we need you to tell us what we do well and what we can do better. City College has a Student Council of representatives led by a President who is voted in to post by the student body along with supporting Officers. They meet regularly to represent the students of the college and voice any concerns to senior members of staff.

Extra-Curricular Activities In addition to your course, we offer activities, competitions, trips and visits so you can discover new interests, develop new skills and ultimately have fun! Our extra-curricular activities will add to your CV and can enhance your university or job application.


english and maths English and maths are essential for virtually every career path and for progression to university or any other further training opportunity you may be considering, so it’s vitally important you work hard to secure these core qualifications. As a full-time student at City College your course will consist of your main chosen subject, English and maths, plus aspects of work experience. Having the right level of English and maths is crucial to ensure you successfully complete your course and are able to progress to university or into work. If your maths and English skills are below the level they should be it will stop you from achieving your potential. We will give you the time and support to develop your knowledge in these subjects.

work experience As a student at City College you will spend time on a work placement and/or work focused activities to give you hands on experience of the working world. We actively encourage our students to take part in Young Enterprise and other work based projects. Each year all of our subject areas host or take part in public displays, events and exhibitions. These include our annual awards night, industry week, art exhibition, fashion show and many more. We also regularly have students entering industry based competitions to showcase their skills and ability. We have some fantastic success in competitions showing the talent we have at City College.

information for parents Leaving school to come to college can be a big step for a young person. At City College we want every student to enjoy reaching their full potential whilst studying here. We provide an enjoyable and safe environment for students to study their chosen subject.

Study Programmes Our courses teach young people to be ready for university or work on completion. They will learn in real life working environments, using industry standard equipment delivered by industry experienced tutors. All full-time students will follow a study programme which consists of their main subject as well as English and maths and aspects of work experience.


We know from experience that students are most successful when the College works in partnership with parents and others who support our students. We value highly the input of parents and carers into students’ college experience. You can expect to be contacted if we have any concerns about the progress your son or daughter is making here, whether that be in relation to academic progress, attendance or behaviour. You can also expect us to celebrate your son or daughter’s successes and let you know when we think they have tackled something really well.

Learning Support

We support our students who may need financial assistance with our Bursary scheme. This can help with transport, food, college trips, equipment and uniform if required.

If your son or daughter requires extra support with their learning we have a team who can offer support and assistance to them throughout their time in college. For more information see page 14.

Progression to higher education or employment City College promotes the progression of students into higher education or employment following the completion of their course. Our dedicated team based in our on-site Futures Centre will guide students through UCAS and job applications, CV writing, interview techniques and much more.

personal tutor As a full-time student you will have a personal tutor who will focus on supporting you to achieve your best and help ensure that your time at college is a positive experience. Your tutor will monitor your progress, set targets and guide and support you with your studies.

learning resources You will have access to our online learning resource, Citybit, where you will be able to access relevant learning activities and materials, submit your assignments and have easy contact with your tutors outside of timetabled classes. Citybit will give you access to STaRS, our ‘student tracking and review system’ used to monitor and track your progress so we can ensure that you meet all of your goals that you set for yourself whilst at college. Our Learning Centre offers you a wealth of library resources (printed, electronic and audio-visual), printing and scanning facilities, extra computer access, as well as group and quiet study zones. Drop-in sessions are also available if you need extra support with your assignments.

it’s easy to get here We have excellent local transport links with buses, trains and ferries all serving the city centre. Limited pay and display on-site parking is available however there are nearby pay and display car parks.


We are a 10 minute walk from West Quay and the High Street, so any bus route that goes into the city centre will be able to get you to City College.

Southampton Central railway station is a 20 minute walk (approx) from the College. Alternatively, Woolston Station is a 5 minute walk from our Marine Skills Centre and 20 minutes from our main campus.

The Hythe and Red Funnel ferry terminals are a 15-20 minute walk to the College.

We have bike huts on campus so you can secure your bike or moped safely.

There is limited on-site pay and display parking, however there are nearby pay and display car parks as well as onstreet metered parking bays.
