A Day at Von Thun’s Farm: Pumpkin Adventure

The Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten classes had a fantastic time on their trip to Von Thun’s Farm! After an exciting bus ride, we arrived at the farm and were greeted by animals happily eating and playing in their pens. We saw chickens, goats, sheep, pigs, and donkeys. One of the highlights was listening to the talking pumpkin—yes, a talking pumpkin! After that, we hopped on the hayride for a bumpy journey to the pumpkin patch. The hayride provided a beautiful tour of the farm, where we enjoyed views of apple orchards and cornfields. Once we reached the pumpkin patch, we had a wonderful time exploring, and searching for the perfect pumpkin.
Fire Prevention Week
During Fire Prevention Week, preschool children learned the importance of knowing the emergency number 911. After reading the book 911: What Is Your Emergency? Each child had the opportunity to pretend to have an emergency by saying and identifying those numbers from the book. When the operator came on, the children explained their pretend emergencies, engaging in role-play scenarios where they would need to use this critical information. We also introduced the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” procedure through our fire safety books. This safety method teaches children what to do if their clothing catches on fire. Each child learned and practiced this important procedure.

Fall and Farm Week

Fall is in the air! With the leaves changing colors and the weather getting cooler, preschool children are exploring the season of Autumn. For a craft activity, we colored a tree brown and added the changing Autumn leaves by mixing red, orange, and yellow paint. Using a bundle of Q-tips, the children dabbled the colors onto their trees, creating beautiful fall scenes with leaves blowing in the wind.
Our week continued with discussions about farms and what we can find there. We read farm stories, sang “Old MacDonald Had a Farm,” and talked about the sounds different animals make. The children then created their own red barns, complete with farm animals that they colored.

Surprise Visitors in the Admin Office!

As part of their lesson on different occupations and the people who work at the school, the PreKindergartners took a fun field trip to the Administration Office. Their first stop was the Admin office, where they met Ms. Pizzapi, the school bookkeeper, and watched her work on her computer. Next, they marched over to Admissions Director Ms. Jones’ office, where Ms. Perez explained how they help families enroll at CHP. She even handed out stickers and two pen wands to all the kids! The little ones were especially excited to watch Ms. Kane work on newsletters, and their eyes lit up when they saw her design a layout in Adobe InDesign. Ms. Iyengar, who teaches coding to older students, engaged them with a fun, hands-on activity. They had a blast! Then, Ms. Rajagopal showed them pictures from previous newsletters, which the students found fascinating. The adventure didn’t stop there! They also visited Coach Tierney and Coach Francavilla, ending the tour with big smiles before heading back to their classrooms.

Celebrating Birthdays en Español
We take every opportunity to practice our Spanish in Lower School, and student birthdays are no exception. We sang Cumpleaños Feliz to our friends who celebrated birthdays in septiembre and octubre. Our birthday amigos sat in a special birthday chair surrounded by piñatas, wore a sombrero, and had their names placed on our Spanish birthday board. We also practiced our counting in Spanish by asking, ¿Tienes 1, 2, 3…? (Are you 1, 2, 3…?). Feliz cumpleaños to these amigos!

Lower School’s Vibrant Celebration of Hispanic Heritage

Lower School had a very joyful Hispanic Heritage Celebration this year. Students from Preschool to Grade Two spent weeks learning about the history of Hispanic Heritage Month and preparing for the celebration that took place on October 15. Our very proud first graders ensured that we were full of facts surrounding the history of Hispanic Heritage Month. They shared that Hispanic Heritage Month was initiated by President Lyndon B. Johnson and later extended to a full month by President Ronald Reagan. The first graders explained that the month is so named because several South American countries gained their independence during this period (September 15 to October 15), among many other interesting facts. Our second graders tested everyone’s knowledge with a competitive trivia game based on the facts shared by the first graders, leading to prizes and surprises for participants. Preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten students kept the energy high by ensuring everyone was moving to the rhythm of Patty Shukla’s Spanish action songs: Salta (Jump), Mueve las manos (Shake your hands), and Para (Stop). Grade Two students not only entertained but also engaged the audience with the exciting action song Levántate, siéntate, gira (Stand Up, Turn Around, Sit Down).
