Anniversary
Gala

Educating Students Since 2003

Message from Our Founder, Nandini Menon, Ed.D.

Cedar Hill Prep School is a boutique educational institution that caters to parents and a community who recognize that education and skills provide their children with opportunities and a pathway to success. In an era where schools and colleges are no longer the sole gatekeepers of information, and where we no longer limit children in terms of what they can learn and achieve, Cedar Hill Prep stands out.

Today, schools and educators play a vital role in understanding the skills that industries demand from students and in serving as skilled mentors to help students develop these skills. Cedar Hill Prep is dedicated to providing opportunities that align with every child’s interests, with the overarching goal of nurturing and guiding students towards competitive high schools and colleges.

Every spring for the past decade, I have had the privilege of meeting with parents of rising 8thgrade students, graduating 8th-grade students, and, in recent years, many high school alumni. During these meetings, I share my research findings about the current paradigm for gaining admission to top institutions. It is an honor that many students still reach out to me for letters of recommendation, and I am deeply gratified that they continue to consider me relevant to their academic journey.

Poetry Day at Cedar Hill Prep: A Delightful Success!

Poetry Day at Cedar Hill Prep took place on May 1st, and it was a truly special event. Our preschool and pre-K classes beautifully performed their poems while their parents watched with excitement. The children practiced their four poems daily, and their hard work shone through in their performances. They were all amazing!

A Magical Journey in Our Preschool Classroom

Our preschoolers embarked on an incredible journey as they witnessed the magical transformation of caterpillars into beautiful butterflies right in their classroom! Over the course of a few weeks, they delved into the stages of a butterfly through firsthand observation.

It all began with the arrival of 11 tiny caterpillars in a jar, complete with food. Day by day, the children watched in wonder as the caterpillars voraciously feasted and grew. Soon, they witnessed the remarkable moment when each caterpillar formed its chrysalis. With anticipation bubbling, the chrysalises were carefully moved to a net, and the children eagerly awaited the next phase of the transformation. Their excitement reached new heights when they returned to school a few days later to find vibrant butterflies fluttering inside the net.

To nourish their newfound friends, slices of orange and watermelon were lovingly placed inside the net. Then came the poignant moment of releasing the butterflies into their natural habitat. As a creative touch, the children crafted their own colorful butterflies using paint and coffee filters, capturing the beauty and wonder of this unforgettable experience.

Celebrating Wellness

In May, our Exercise Study concluded with a joyous celebration! Mrs. Patel, a certified yoga instructor and Kindergarten teacher, led the festivities by demonstrating various yoga poses alongside the children, emphasizing the importance of mindful breathing.

Blooming Love

The preschoolers' excitement was palpable as they crafted heartfelt cards and planted vibrant marigold flowers in personalized cups for their beloved mothers. With each card written and every flower planted, an abundance of love bloomed, a special gift for Mom to cherish.

Growing Green Thumbs

Recently, our pre-kindergarteners participated in a seed study, growing their own saplings from seeds. These enthusiastic young scientists then donated their saplings to the rain garden and learned how to plant them. This hands-on project not only taught them about plant growth and ecology but also instilled a sense of community and environmental stewardship.

We are proud of our budding gardeners!

Kindergarten Celebrates Memorial Day

In kindergarten, we delved into the significance of Memorial Day through reading a book, engaging in discussions, and watching a video. We discovered that Memorial Day in the United States commemorates the memory of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the nation’s wars. It’s a day when Americans come together to honor these heroes by attending parades, church services, and various social events. Additionally, people pay tribute by adorning soldiers’ graves with flowers and flags.

To express our gratitude for their service in keeping us safe, the kindergarten students crafted special American Flags—a heartfelt gesture honoring those who have bravely served our country.

A Magical Day with Magic Bob!

We are delighted to share that Magic Bob recently visited our preschool through kindergarten students and performed an array of mesmerizing magic tricks! The children were in splits of laughter as Magic Bob dazzled them with his enchanting performances, including an unforgettable trick where he made a jump rope disappear!

Adding to the fun, Magic Bob’s talented balloon artists crafted creative balloon shapes, providing delightful souvenirs for the kids to take home. It was truly a memorable day filled with wonder and joy.

We are grateful to Magic Bob for bringing magic and laughter into our school, making it an experience our students will cherish for a long time.

May Finds Grade 4’s A-Buzzing!

May found Grade 4 pulling out their craft supplies as they created Mother’s Day gifts…keepsake boxes and cards. We hope all of our Grade 4 moms enjoyed a wonderful celebration of their special day!

Grade 4 had a chance to celebrate four more double-digit birthdays this month! Happy Birthday to Esha, Kaelan, Indigo, and Nandini!!! Additional May celebrations found Mrs. Yurman and Grade 4 the recipients of the Literary Leadership Excellence Award from BriBooks for our amazing participation in the National Young Authors’ Fair! Then, during the Memorial Day week, two of our 4 the graders, Aaryan and Vallabh, received awards at the National Finals of the International Academic Competitions for advancing into the quarterfinals of the National Geography Bee! Congratulations to both!!!

Along with the flowers that bloom in May, Grade 4 students have been blooming, as well! It was during this month, as the students were taking their graduation photos and completing each day’s classwork, that they began reflecting on all that they have accomplished since September! The feeling shared among all is how aware they are of all that they can now successfully accomplish in one day and how much more independent and confident they have become since September! Congratulations Grade 4 as you are heading towards Graduation and Middle School!

For the first time since COVID, Grade 4 was able to rekindle our annual trip to Trenton! During our visit to the NJ State House, the students participated in the interactive “Make a Law” program. After being introduced to bill No. 1783, that was pre-filed for introduction in the Senate this year, the students had an opportunity to debate whether or not handwriting should be mandatory in public school education. Convincing arguments were presented from both sides. It will be interesting to see how this evolves in the Senate. Our next adventure was to tour various historic points of interest in the State House, including the Senate and General Assembly.

After an outdoor lunch at the NJ State Museum, we walked over to the Old Barracks Museum where the students did a little time travel as the recruiter inducted them into the Continental Army. They then met with a soldier, who explained what to really expect once you were inducted into the army, and a nurse, who explained the different types of smallpox that they could potentially catch, as well as the importance of receiving a vaccine. After demonstrating the technique of dispensing a smallpox vaccine in 1777, the nurse offered to vaccinate the new recruits, but no one accepted the offer!

Celebrating CHP’s 8th Graders’ Victory at the Junior Solar Sprint Competition

We’re thrilled to announce that our 8th-grade students have achieved an outstanding triumph at the Junior Solar Sprint competition! Their innovation and dedication led them to clinch the coveted 1st place in the upcycled materials category. From design to execution, their sleek ride demonstrated both creativity and engineering prowess.

One unique aspect of our Solar Sprint team is that the middle school science teachers encourage the use of upcycled materials in their projects. Upcycling involves taking items that would otherwise be discarded and repurposing them for better use. This approach not only promotes sustainability but also challenges our students to think outside the box and be creative with their material selection.

CHP goes a step further by requiring the entire solar car to be built from upcycled materials—a practice that sets our team apart from others. This emphasis on upcycling not only instills environmental consciousness but also fosters innovative problem-solving skills among our students. Let’s extend our heartfelt congratulations to our talented students for their remarkable achievement and for exemplifying the spirit of innovation at CHP!

Rain Garden

We are thrilled to share the success of our recent "Go Green (Flag) and Go Home" rain garden planting event, which took place on May 11th. Around 20 enthusiastic teachers, parents, and students joined forces to build community and construct a vital rain garden.

The idea for this project stemmed from the keen observation of Mr. Deisher, our dedicated 7th and 8th-grade science teacher. He noticed significant erosion occurring during rainfalls near the sidewalk. "Every time I looked out my window during rain, I saw soil being washed away. I knew that we needed to do something about it," remarked Mr. Deisher. After months of meticulous planning and fundraising efforts, the Green Team, in collaboration with the New Jersey Water Supply, organized the event to address this pressing concern. Together, we worked diligently to construct a rain garden and plant a variety of tree cuttings and erosion-controlling plants along the riparian buffer zone.

The riparian buffer zone plays a crucial role in managing the watershed by controlling erosion. By strategically planting native vegetation along this area, we create a natural barrier that helps to stabilize the soil and prevent runoff from carrying sediment and pollutants into nearby waterways. This not only protects our local ecosystem but also contributes to the overall health of our watershed. For those who may be unfamiliar, a rain garden is an eco-friendly solution designed to reduce soil compaction and erosion. By excavating the land and replacing nutrient-poor soil with a blend of leaf compost and topsoil, we create a sustainable habitat for native plants with deep taproots. Not only do these plants help to prevent erosion, but they also attract essential native pollinators, fostering biodiversity within our ecosystem.

The success of this event would not have been possible without the unwavering support and participation of our dedicated volunteers. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and resources to make this project a reality.

As we witness the transformation of our school grounds into a thriving oasis, let us continue to champion sustainability and environmental stewardship within our community. Together, we can make a tangible difference for generations to come.

Thank you once again for your commitment to our shared vision of a greener, healthier future.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting as students bonded over their shared experiences and aspirations for the summer ahead. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with each other and with school leadership in a casual setting, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

As the discussions flowed and laughter filled the room, it was evident that Pizza with the Principal was more than just a meal—it was a chance for students to unwind, share stories, and create lasting memories with Mr. Seeley!

CHP Junior Olympics 2024: A Day of Fun, Team Spirit, and Unforgettable Moments

The Junior Olympics on May 31st was a smashing success at Cedar Hill Prep School! From enthusiastic preschoolers navigating obstacle courses to the entire school community engaging in exciting games like tug of war, the day was filled with laughter and joy. Even the staff joined in on the fun, making it the perfect day for everyone involved.

The Junior Olympics is a cherished tradition at CHP, celebrating team spirit and camaraderie among students, teachers, and staff. This year was no exception, with each event highlighting the importance of working together and supporting one another.

Of course, the most anticipated moment of the day was when the entire school had the chance to dunk water on Mr. Seeley! No other principal could match his spirited participation, literally and figuratively, making the event even more memorable.
