Weather Theme
Our youngest students in school are so enthusiastic when participating in science experiments and observing the outcomes. During our Weather Week, the children participated in making a rain cloud. We filled a cup with water and topped it with shaving cream. Then we dropped some food coloring on top until it started to rain. The students absolutely loved it!

Read Across America

Read Across America is a day when we celebrate how much we love to read! Our Preschool children were very excited to listen to stories read to them by Mrs. Kotasthane’s 3rd grade class. Then, each Preschool child partnered with a 3rd grade student who read to them – which our students enjoyed so much.
Thank you, 3rd Graders!!
St Patrick’s Day
On St. Patrick’s Day, all of us at CHP were Irish for the day! The children in Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten paraded around the school wearing shamrock hats, green clothing, and necklaces while playing bell instruments. The older students came out of their classrooms to cheer them on!
After lunch, when the Preschoolers returned to their classroom, they were surprised to see their room had been disheveled by a sneaky leprechaun. He wrote on the tables, knocked over some chairs, and threw toys around. We think he came in through the open window. But, while he was wreaking havoc, he also delivered some gifts! The leprechaun left all the children bubbles and gold coins. What a mischievous gift-giver!

Pre-Kindergarten (A) Read Across America Celebration
On March 2nd, Pre-Kindergarten A celebrated Read Across America Day. We talked about the importance of reading and being read to by someone else. The children had fun telling their friends what their favorite book is. Also, we enjoyed having our very own 3rd Grade class join us to read some of their favorite stories!
Read Across America Celebration in Pre-Kindergarten (B)
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
—Dr. SeussOn March 2nd, Pre-Kindergarten B celebrated Read Across America Day. We had guest readers from 3rd Grade who read their favorite books to us. We talked about the importance of reading and being read to by others. We also decorated our ‘Cat in the Hat’ top hats and wore them the whole day!

Five Senses
The Pre-Kindergarten class had a great time learning about the five senses! We discovered that each sense works together with our brain to get a specific job done. Students did a fun activity with popcorn to learn more about the senses. After tasting the popcorn, students worked together on a chart describing how corn popping in the microwave feels, smells, looks, tastes, and sounds.

Pre-Kindergarten (B) St. Patrick’s Day Celebration!
Pre-Kindergarten B celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in a big way! We wished everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day as we paraded around and visited our friends at the Middle School building. Later, we had our special class party with lots of green food! We also found out that a visiting leprechaun had left our classroom in a mess –but he left us some bubbles to play with, so we forgave him!

Preschool - Kindergarten St Patrick’s Day Parade

Every year on March 17th, many of us celebrate Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods, and a whole lot of green. This year Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten children had their own parade celebration! 1st and 2nd Graders waved to the students from their classroom windows! Principal Seeley was there too. Students took the parade into the Middle School building and got high fives as they wished everyone a very happy St. Patrick’s Day! To the student’s surprise, a leprechaun visited the classrooms and messed some things up. But the leprechaun left special treasures for everyone in their shoes. It was very exciting and magical! The children created their own paper leprechauns to remember our special visitor. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Big Jeff Music Show

The Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten classes enjoyed a visit from “Big Jeff.” He came to visit Cedar Hill Prep and put on an amazing show. The students were engaged and entertained by his fun and creative songs! Big Jeff made sure the children had fun dancing, singing, and thinking with his interactive show!
Kindergarten Learns about Ramadan

Both Kindergarten classes gathered together to learn all about Ramadan. Omar’s mom came in and read two books, Ilyas & Duck and Ramadan. The children colored pictures, made picture frames, and received goodie bags. They learned that Muslim people observe Ramadan by praying, reading the Koran, doing good deeds, and fasting. Muslim people believe their past sins will be forgiven if they participate in Ramadan. While those observing Ramadan will fast every day from dawn until dusk, most children don’t fast until they are in Middle School. Muslims spend time with family and friends while helping people who are in need. We learned that “Eid al-Fitr” takes place at the end of Ramadan and is the festival of breaking the fast.

Grade 1 Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day

Friday, March 17th was a very eventful day in 1st Grade. We made leprechaun “wanted posters” with a written description of the mischievous creature. Students learned about St. Patrick, did an Irish Spring Soap experiment, and had a yummy St. Patrick’s Day Feast and party!

Grade 1 Poetry Day

On Poetry Day, 1st Grade presented a “Potpourri of Poetry” – an assortment of fun poems written by women authors to honor Women’s History Month. Each student memorized and recited their poem in front of an audience. They also memorized a group poem to present to parents. We are so proud of our 1st Graders! All thirty of them remembered their poems without guidance from their papers.

Grade 2 Poetry Day
Poetry Day was a fun celebration for both students and parents! Students memorized and presented their nature-themed poems and illustrations. Some students also researched and shared information about the poets. At the end of the celebration, all students surprised their families with either a haiku, word cinquain, or diamante poem that they had written. We appreciate the support from families at home that helped to make this day a success!
Grade 3 Reads to Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr. Seuss
March 2nd is Read Across America Day, a national celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The first Read Across America Day was held seventeen years ago! Since then, it has been celebrated in schools all over the country. Today, 3rd Graders read to the three and four-year-old classrooms. The younger children enjoyed listening to 3rd grade students read books such as Green Eggs and Ham, Wacky Wednesday, and Oh, The Places You’ll Go. Being the youngest students in the Middle School building, it was very special for the 3rd Graders to be able to show off their reading skills and be able to inspire younger students. They enjoyed wearing their colorful hats and even received Dr. Seuss stickers for the celebration! Great job, 3rd Graders!

Middle School Reads to the Elementary School Students

Cedar Hill Prep celebrated a month-long Read Across CHP event that celebrated the power of reading to open doors of opportunity and build greater awareness. It was heartwarming to see the Middle School students read fun and educational books to the elementary students. Reading takes young people to unique places in their imagination where they can embrace unfamiliar ideas, develop their own intellect, and spark creativity in their lives. A big thank you to all teachers for making this wonderful event possible!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Grade 3 Mystery Readers

On Friday, March 3rd, 3rd Graders were treated to a mystery reader – it was Risa’s sister, Anjali! She read a book entitled The Velveteen Rabbit. The Velveteen Rabbit is about a young boy who gets a stuffed animal on Christmas morning. As this young rabbit starts to befriend the boy’s other toys, he longs to be a real rabbit. And thus begins his journey of being transformed into a real rabbit through the love of his owner. Risa was pleasantly surprised to have her older sibling come join us and read to her and her peers. The children were entranced with the rabbit’s feelings of wanting to be different in order to be loved, but discovering he was perfect exactly as he was -- a feeling I think many of us can relate to! Thank you for joining us and making our Friday a little brighter, Anjali!
On Friday March 17th, 3rd graders were treated to a special guest on St. Patrick’s Day. It was Mahalakshmi’s dad! He read Chanakya: The Kingmaker Chanakya was an ancient Indian teacher and master strategist. The book described the events that led to the establishment of the Mauryan Empire in India. Chanakya established the empire under the guidance and assistance of Chandragupta Maurya, the first Mauryan emperor. Mahalakshmi was delighted that her dad read her favorite book to the class. Thank you, Mahalakshmi’s dad, for making our day even more fun!

3rd Graders Celebrate in True Irish Fashion!
On Friday, March 17th, 3rd Graders all became Irish for the day! Dressed in green with lots of Irish spirit, our students learned about Saint Patrick, why he is so important to Ireland, and how legend has it he drove all the snakes out of the country! In the afternoon, students got creative, making leprechaun traps, leprechaun binoculars, and St. Patrick’s Day bracelets. They rounded out the day by taking photographs of themselves posing with some special holiday props. We love celebrating St. Patty’s Day at CHP!

Ramadan Celebration in Grade 3
Ramadan, a traditional Islam holy month that includes fasting, prayer and reflection, begins March 22nd and will last into late April. 3rd Grade students read a book called My First Ramadan to their classmates. The book follows along with one young boy as he observes the Muslim holy month with his family. This year, the narrator is finally old enough to fast, and he shares his experiences of this special holiday in Islam. 3rd Graders loved the wonderful reading by their peers. The students also decorated beautiful lanterns which are displayed in the front lobby for all to admire and appreciate. The 3rd Graders also read the book to the 4th Graders who were very delighted to gain insight into the holy month of Ramadan.

Dental Visit
On Tuesday March 21st, 3rd Graders were treated to a special visit from Risa’s mom, Dr. Bordia, and her team to celebrate dental health month. They presented an engaging lesson on the proper way to brush our teeth followed by an interactive activity where the students received index cards with different foods on them. They then had to decide if the food they had was good or bad for their teeth. We learned so much (teachers included!) about the different vitamins and nutrients we get from all different foods. Finally, the presentation concluded with a reading of the book Mommy is a Great Dentist.

Grade 3 Poetry Day
On Friday, March 24th, 3rd Graders, 3rd Graders participated in Poetry Day. Each student recited a poem by Jack Prelutsky, a very comical poet who made us all giggle. They all spoke with expressions and were very animated! Additionally, students authored three poems. These poems included a limerick, an acrostic poem, and an autobiographical poem. These poems will be part of a larger poetry booklet completed during the month of April. This event is always a joy for the students and parents to participate in. Great job, 3rd Graders!
Super Students
Every month, 3rd Grade students are selected as Super Students. They exhibit the qualities of exceptional behavior both inside and outside of the classroom. They complete a poster that showcases who they are, including their “Super Student power” and what they would do to make the world a better place.

The Super Students for the month of March were Snigdha, Aarush, Viraj and Ishana.
Snigdha describes herself as a tremendous team player! She wishes she could help homeless people and orphans and loves to draw in her spare time.

Aarush describes himself as a tremendous team player, a ravenous reader, and a stellar scientist among many others! He would like to fix gender discrimination in our world. He loves to read and play in his spare time.

Viraj describes himself as a tremendous team player, mighty mathematician, marvelous musician, and awesome athlete. He wishes there was no homelessness and loves to play soccer in his spare time. Ishana describes herself as a tremendous team player, marvelous musician, wonder writer, and a stellar scientist among others! She wishes adults could get work breaks in the summer and loves to read and play in her spare time.
Great job, 3rd Graders!
Plant Hunt
3rd Graders explored the different locations of the school yard and found the same plant in two different locations. They investigated whether plants of the same type have different locations. They observed each plant, they counted the number of leaves, they measured the plant height, and they measured the width of the largest leaf. Students then recorded the measurements in a table and discussed their observations. They concluded that the plants in the two different locations did not have the exact same characteristics. The plants were exposed to different amounts of sunlight and soil quality, so had different characteristics.

Grade 4 is All A-Flutter with the Coming of Spring!

March has been a very busy and fun-filled month for Grade 4! The month began with Read Across America. Keeping with tradition, Grade 4 was thrilled to put on their Dr. Seuss hats and visit the Kindergarten classes to read a selection of Dr. Seuss books to their Kindergarten friends.

Grade 4 enjoyed being read to by a couple of our Middle School students. Thank you to Sahith Mangu and Aakash Mehta for visiting Grade 4 and reading to us! That was a terrific treat!
Before we knew it, we were adorned in green as we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. The day’s activities included crafting shamrocks and leprechaun puppets, watching a video of St. Patrick, and catching a leprechaun in a jar! The day’s celebrations continued as Grade 4 had a chance to watch a St. Patrick’s Day parade by the Lower School students, many dressed in lovely outfits of green!

To commemorate the beginning of Ramadan, three of our 3rd Grade friends visited Grade 4 to read My First Ramadan to us. Thank you to Isra, Eesa, and Arham for sharing this tradition with us!

Many of our 4th Graders qualified to take part in the Regional Finals of the International Academic Competitions’ Geography, History, and Science Bees. These competitions began in February and will continue into the middle of April. At that time, we will announce all of the CHP students who qualified to advance to the National Finals in Arlington, VA this June. We will also be announcing students who qualified to attend the International Bees that will be held during the summers of 2023 and 2024.

Grade 4 had an opportunity to celebrate three March birthdays as two more 4th Graders were welcomed into the “Double Digit Club.” Happy Birthday wishes for Agasthya Mabbu and Zinnia Shirley on their 10th birthdays. And a big Happy Birthday to Mrs. Gadaleta!

During the 100th Day of School, Grade 4 had a competition to see who could make the most words from the two words “One Hundred.” Congratulations to Agasthya (Cherokee House) who came in 1st place with 53 points; Isha (Shawnee House) who came in 2nd place with 52 points; Yajur (Shawnee House) who came in 3rd place with 45 points; and Colton (Ramapo House) who came in 4th place with 44 points!

Grade 4’s Poetry Presentations highlighted poems that are reflective of the American landscape. Grade 4 students researched their respective poets and wrote the introductions for their poems. These narrations provided the audience with some insight into the lives and motivations of these poets — which were then highlighted by the students’ original artwork that reflected the messages within their poems. Congratulations, 4th Graders, for your wonderful performances!
Grade 3 and 4 NJIN Farm Trip

On Tuesday, March 28th, 3rd and 4th Grade students took a trip to the NJIN farm. The students enjoyed a Spring Scavenger Hunt where they looked for different items of nature including a budding flower, a lake, dew, and insects. After enjoying the brisk sunshine during lunch, students took their sketchbooks and drew a specific tree, bush, or flower of their choice. They also created a map showing the location of this item. When we all return in April, students will observe the same tree, bush, or flower to see how it has changed. 3rd and 4th Grade students worked harmoniously on all activities and loved their time in nature!

Bravo debaters!!!

The topics for the debates were as follows:
1) Energy drinks do more good than harm
2) ChatGPT does more harm than good
3) Abolish the UN Security Council
4) Space exploration must be privatized
NAQT
On Saturday, April 1st, CHP’s Academic Team represented our school at the regional NAQT academic competition. The NAQT competition tests students’ skills in literature, physics, biology, chemistry, algebra, geometry, history, geography, current events, and culture. This year, it was held at the Edison Academy Magnet School for STEM. Our team had a number of our 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders compete. Students who competed were Deetya Tandon, Meghana Indupuru, Aditi Prabhakaran, Ayan Joshi, Sahith Mangu, and team captain, Mahadev Menon. The team was coached by Middle School science teacher, Denise Galiano. Our students did us proud by coming in 6th place overall with an average of 186 points per game. Our team captain did amazing with 455 total points, ranking Mahadev #5 out of all participants in the competition. CHP is already studying for next year’s event. Way to go, Wildcats!

Pi Day
March 14th was our annual Pi Day Celebration in Middle School. Even the science class got involved. We love to prove things in science, so grade 6 proved Pi using marshmallows! They experimented with mini marshmallows, normal size, and jumbo marshmallows in their experiments. Regardless of the size of the treats, Pi still proved to be within an acceptable deviation range of 3.14. For these young scientists, proving Pi was a piece of cake – or should we say a piece of pie!
Pi Mathematics Competition
A value of π to 40 digits would be more than enough to compute the circumference of the Milky Way galaxy to an error less than the size of a proton.
Sir Isaac NewtonEvery year in honor of Pi Day (3/14), the CHP Middle School students challenge each other to recall the most digits of Pi. Two winners from each grade then compete against one another and our winner for this year was 6th grader, Meghana Indupuru, who recited 311 digits! Students and staff watched in awe as she calmly recited the digits, making no errors. While Meghana was our clear winner, she was followed by our 2nd place winner, 7th grade student, Ayan Joshi, with 137 digits. Congratulations to Meghana and Ayan, and to all the homeroom winners who participated: Nico, Samaira, Vihaan, Arjun, Siana, and Motunrayo.

Beehives
Grades 5 and 6 are getting ready for Spring at the NJIN farm! They are excited that the farm will house two new beehives this spring! One is a traditional style hive while the other is the new Flo Hive. Students spent a full day outside painting the hives, racing through a scavenger hunt trying to find bee facts, and feeling more and more excited for Spring. The hives came out beautifully and students’ ears are buzzing with excitement talking about their new fascination with our friendly pollinators. The honeybees will enter their NJIN homes at the end of April. What a sweet addition to the farm!

Grade 6 Partners with the Kindergarten Class for a Science Lesson!

Mrs. Galiano’s 6th grade science class teamed up with our Kindergarten children for a fun-filled science lesson! 6th Grader Ava read the Eric Carle book, The Mixed-Up Chameleon. The chameleon’s life becomes hilariously exciting when it learns that it can not only change its color but also its size and shape! It was hilarious! The children were given a white chameleon glued to a specifically unique background and, with the help of their 6th Grade buddies, they decorated their chameleons in colors that would help them camouflage themselves in different environments. It was so much fun!

Grades 7 and 8 NJIN Trip
The 7th and 8th Grade students went to the farm on March 7th. An inch or two of fresh snow blanketed the rolling hills at the farm. While there, the students began the site analysis for their permaculture design. This exercise taught them to slow down and observe their surroundings on a deeper level. Ultimately, the students will design the area to enhance ecosystem functions and services, to increase biodiversity, and to improve the habitat for the keystone species there. This helps our students learn how to apply science and creativity in a real-world scenario. The NJIN farm is our living lab! In addition to the scientific study at the farm, the students made time for recreation by and going sledding. The farm trips are a highlight for the students every time. Each visit is the perfect combination of fun and learning!

CHP Collaborates with Rutgers University’s Landscape Architecture Department

A collaboration between Rutgers University Landscape Architecture Department, the New Jersey Institute of Nature, and Cedar Hill Prep School has been taking place since February 7th. First, the CHP and Rutgers University students learned to read landscape architecture during a visit to NJIN in February. Each group of students learned about “Planting Design with Permaculture ‘’ during a slideshow presentation that Mr. Deisher gave two weeks after the initial site visit.
On the 7th and 8th Grade students’ March visit to NJIN, the students began a site analysis and learned to measure scale by counting their steps between landmarks. The next step in the process took place on March 21st at Rutgers University. The Rutgers Landscape Architecture Department students presented their rain garden and outdoor classroom designs for the New Jersey Institute of Nature.
Due to the constraints of the classroom space at Rutgers, a small contingent from CHP will represent the school during the presentations. Accompanying Ms. Nan and Mr. Deisher to Rutgers University, the following students have been selected to take notes on the presentation and report back to their respective classes and the CHP Green Team. These students have demonstrated initiative and motivation in learning about permaculture, landscape design, and sustainable agriculture: Reina Fontaine, Aakash Mehta, and Ayan Joshi. Thank you so much to everyone for the support of this one-of-a-kind endeavor between Cedar Hill Prep School, New Jersey Institute of Nature, and Rutgers University!
VEX IQ Robotics

VEX IQ is a robotics platform designed to transform the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) learning paradigm for young students. When students have the ability to snap robots together using an intuitive tool-less system, it can unlock a curiosity and a passion that will stay with them for life. The system naturally encourages teamwork, problem solving, and leadership for young students. Watching code come alive on a physical robot is the most engaging (and fun!) way to learn complex programming & computational concepts. CHP’s Vex IQ elective focuses on teaching students advanced building techniques and programming concepts, including the use of sensors. Through the 2022-23 season, the VEX IQ Team worked building robots for the SlapShot Challenge!

DRAMA Spring Play: School House Rock Live! Jr.

On Friday, March 31st, the Drama Department presented the 2023 Spring Musical “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” The Emmy Award Winning 1970s Cartoon turned 50 this year, so we brought these classic songs to the stage to celebrate!
The students worked diligently to learn their music and choreography. We are so proud of them and thankful for our community’s support!

ART
A Tricky Path for A Leprechaun
Students in Kindergarten A drew maps composed of pathways and mazes in the hopes of tricking their whimsical leprechaun who was searching for a pot of gold.

Roly Poly Leprechauns
During art class, students in Kindergarten B celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by creating drawings of “Roly Poly Leprechauns.” The characters looked quite jolly as they danced through the picture planes!

Otta Sight: Invention for Blind People
Using design process steps, students in Grades 3 - 8 developed inventions to help those who need assistance seeing.

Students created a presentation showing the 5 steps of the Design Process: 1. Brainstorming, 2. Rough Sketches 3. Engineered Drawings 4. Ideal View and 5. User View.
Some students made models of their inventions. Many of these inventions could possibly make a huge impact for the blind. Great job inventors!!!

Spanish Project in Grade 6

The 6th grade Spanish students created three projects about Spanish culture. The three projects were about cascarones, Los Premios Juventud, and Tex-Mex food. Cascarones are confetti-filled eggs that represent good luck and are used during celebrations such as Easter, birthdays, graduations, and parties. This group created a skit showing how cascarones are used at graduations by cracking real cascarones on each other’s heads! They also made a poster with different facts about cascarones. Students in the Los Premios Juventud project created an amazing poster and an informative slideshow explaining this famous awards show. The poster had disco balls, pictures, and a quote! Their slideshow was full of important and interesting facts. The third project on Tex-Mex and Mexican food explored the combination of traditional Mexican food prepared with ingredients in the way Texans like to eat it. Some of the Tex-Mex dishes include fajitas, nachos, and tacos. The students in this group created a slideshow and a poster showing different Tex-Mex foods, where you can eat them, and what they are. Great job, Grade 6!
