Groundhog Day Excitement
On February 2nd, Groundhog Day marks a tradition where if the groundhog sees his shadow, it signals six more weeks of winter; if not, spring is imminent. After immersing themselves in the delightful tale of "Wake Up, Groundhog," the preschoolers eagerly anticipated the groundhog's prediction. The verdict? Six more weeks of winter! Despite the chilly forecast, the excitement of the occasion resonated throughout the classroom, sparking curiosity and wonder among the young learners.
Spreading Love
Valentine's Day was celebrated with an abundance of love and kindness at preschool. Children adorned themselves in Valentine colors and crafted their own "Love Bear" Valentine bags to hold the cards they exchanged with their friends. Each child also had the delightful opportunity to decorate their cookie with pink icing and colorful sprinkles, culminating in the best part - savoring the delicious treats together!

Empowering Young Minds

During Black History Month, our preschoolers joyfully commemorated by showcasing their projects featuring renowned African Americans. Dressed as their chosen figures, they arrived at school adorned in character. With parental assistance, each child crafted a poster highlighting a notable inventor, athlete, scientist, or celebrity. Sharing their projects with classmates, they beamed with pride embodying their selected personalities, articulating the reasons behind their fame.
From Fashion to Foundation: Exploring the World of Building in Preschool
Our preschoolers transitioned from fashion designers to builders as we embarked on our next study. Exploring the diversity of buildings within our community, we observed the varying shapes, materials, and functions they serve. Rectangular, square, brick, different roofs, and numerous windows—all contributing to the essence of shelter.
During our investigations, children shared pictures of their homes, discussing the layouts, doors, windows, and personal spaces like bedrooms. Armed with paper bags and colorful paper pieces, they unleashed their creativity, constructing unique houses, some even featuring skylights! In the following weeks, we collected boxes of various sizes, encouraging teamwork as children collaborated to build structures. Inspired by the tale of the 3 Little Pigs, we deliberated on the strength of materials used in construction. Through discussion and exploration, the children concluded that bricks stood as the sturdiest option.

Chinese New Year Delights in Preschool
Chinese New Year, also recognized as Lunar New Year, is celebrated this year on Saturday, February 10th. In the Chinese zodiac, it marks the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. During our festivities, Chloe’s mom graciously shared her family’s traditions with the children, presenting them with a colorful poster illustrating the 12 zodiac signs and explaining their significance. With guidance from their teachers and Chloe’s mom, the children collaborated to assemble a stunning illuminated lantern, adding a touch of beauty to our celebration.

Diving into Dino Discovery

Preschoolers embarked on an exciting journey into the world of dinosaurs through storytelling and interactive play with plastic dinosaur toys. They grasped the concept that dinosaurs no longer roam the earth; they are extinct. Inspired by Aliki’s book “Fossils Tell of Long Ago,” the children eagerly dove into creating their own fossils. As a collective, we followed step-by-step instructions to craft dinosaur fossils. Mixing flour, salt, and water, we formed dough balls, which each child then flattened. With great care, they pressed small dinosaurs into the dough to leave imprints. The dough was carefully placed into a warmer to dry overnight, anticipation bubbling among the children to see the results of their fossil-making adventure.
Nurturing Healthy Smiles
“Brush, brush, brush your teeth, brush them twice a day!” echoed the chant of our preschoolers as they enthusiastically embraced the importance of dental care. During Dental Awareness Week, our young learners delved into the significance of maintaining healthy teeth through proper brushing, flossing, and dietary habits. Dr. Sheth, a parent and dentist, graciously visited our school to impart invaluable lessons on dental hygiene to our preschool and Pre-K classes.

With infectious enthusiasm, Dr. Sheth conducted an engaging demonstration elucidating the significance of flossing and brushing teeth correctly. Accompanied by her trusty sidekick, Dexter, she illustrated the proper techniques of brushing, making the learning experience both informative and entertaining. Through interactive sessions, our children also gained insights into discerning between healthy and unhealthy food choices for maintaining pristine dental health.

Living History Celebration

Throughout the month, students have been working on their Black American Living History presentations. Each Grade 4 student’s performance was a celebration of the many Black American inventors and scientists who have made important contributions to our society.

In preparation for the event, the students learned to do online research, collect and organize data, document their research, write a speech to inform in the 1st person, and create “museum” displays that included presentation boards highlighting each inventor and artifacts that were symbolic of the inventors’ accomplishments. In addition, the students learned some public speaking techniques and wrote Bio Poems about their subjects. An air of excitement filled the gym on February 22 as the students delivered their presentations to the many parents and other guests who visited their individual “museum” tables. Congratulations Grade 4 for your outstanding presentations!

Exploring Earth’s Waters
In fifth grade this month, we delved into Earth Science and explored the world of Earth's waters. Combining mathematics with our understanding of the Earth, we highlighted the startlingly small percentage of freshwater compared to the total water on our planet. Did you know that only 3% of all Earth's water is fresh water? And shockingly, just a tiny fraction of that is actually clean!
To reinforce this concept, we embarked on a practical exercise, calculating the staggering amount of water wasted by a single leaking faucet in a day, a month, and a year.

The results were eye-opening – over a million milliliters of water are lost every year from that one faucet alone! It's truly astonishing how quickly it adds up. Let's make a difference and fix those leaks!
