UNIVERSITY FAIR On Tuesday, October 15th, Cedar College, in collaboration with Education USA, held an university fair at the DHA campus, to assist Knights aspiring to study abroad. This event aimed to provide students with comprehensive information about international university options, specific to the regions of the USA. Following representatives from esteemed institutions of: Central Michigan University Suffolk University Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University University of South Dakota The University of Arizona University at Buffalo, State University of New York University of Northern Iowa DePaul University New Jersey Institute of Technology Kent State University Montclair State University The University of Tampa Hong Kong Baptist University University of Kansas Augustana College Iowa State University New York Institute of Technology Columbia College Chicago Pace University Foothill - De Anza College Western University

Students engaged with university representatives to explore their options and broaden their horizons.

Knights attending the fair were enlightened by the representatives regarding the fee structure, financial aid and scholarships, offered undergraduate programs and post-graduation career paths and job opportunities in the region of their respective universities.

These type of fairs and sessions are a great opportunity for graduating students to gain insight regarding their future choices and while the decision will remain in their hands, Cedar is dedicated to supporting and guiding students in their academic endeavors. We wish all applicants success in their university applications and look forward to our students achieving excellence.

STUDENT SUGGESTIONS College should have more gym equipment, besides just the rowing machine. A lot of students spend the entire day in college and it would be a good usage of free time if we could use the gym for our physical fitness, so the gym equipment should be inclusive of regular machines as well (e.g treadmills).

There should be a vending machine for students to get a quick snack and not having to walk all the way to the canteen for it. It could be time-saving and economical, just including packaged goods.

SPOTLIGHT - AMMARAH CHOUDRY Ammarah Choudry, one of our A Level students, has made Cedar proud by ranking #1 in Pakistan for Women’s Doubles in Badminton and #3 in Singles at the National Badminton Championship held in Lahore. Her zeal for sports and athletics is not just confined to badminton; she is equally passionate about volleyball, cricket, football, basketball, squash, tennis, and even table tennis, which she pursued professionally for 5 years, earning the title of Junior National Champion, before switching to professional badminton.

Coming from a family of sports enthusiasts, Ammarah grew up in an environment that encouraged and kindled her love for sports. Although she has several international, hard-players to look up to, her eldest brother has been her biggest inspiration, because he inculcated the love of sports in her as well.

What started as playing in the club for entertainment turned into a 6 am gym, running, and training sessions, all working towards leaving a significant mark in the domain, especially opening an opportunity for women interested in sports, a thought previously unconventional though slowly progressing into prevalence. Ammarah talks about the effort and exertion it takes her daily regarding her training, her day starting at 6 am with physical exercise, and ending by approximately 10 pm, during which she also emphasises how court training is not the only thing essential; mental strength and conditioning are equally important in her endeavour. A set goal, a determined mind, and knowing what she’s aiming for, build up her resolve and help her achieve her targets, along with her relentless training.

“Hard work is what gave me the title in the championship” she states. Her consistent efforts are not only limited to her athletic abilities, she simultaneously juggles her academics and A Levels study to create a balanced work day. She plans ahead for her coursework, knowing the demands of the sport and competitions that are bound to make her miss lessons, and so Ammarah tries to cover and comprehend the taught concepts in college as much as possible, attending her classes with complete focus and intent so as to not having to take out extra time to review taught material.

Ammarah continues to work towards her goals, nationally as well as internationally, preparing for two international championships in Vietnam and one ranking championship in Pakistan. However her broader aim is towards the 2028 Olympics in LA, for which she has started preparing already. We wish Ammarah the very best of luck and are sure she will continue to make Cedar proud!

PROUD PAKISTANI SIRBAZ KHAN

On 3rd October 2024, the passionate mountaineer Sirbaz Khan became the first ever Pakistani to successfully climb all 14 of the world’s highest summits, each soaring over 8000 meters. Born in a land hemmed by one the most beautiful mountain valleys; Hunza in 1987, Sirbaz took on his first ever expedition as an assistant cook for a K2 base camp when he was just in the ninth grade.

Although his first attempt at mountain climbing in 2016 failed, he fared a much better time the very next year when he summited Nanga Parbat. He went on to pinnacle the 8,516 meter high Mount Lhotse in 2019, the 8047 meter high Broad peak mountain in Pakistan, both of which he did without supplementary oxygen, and Mount Manaslu in Nepal which he became the first ever Pakistani to climb. He made to the top of four of the rugged peaks in and around the Nepal-China border, which he succeeded with three more in 2022 including the legendary K2, and took on the sixth highest mountain in the world, Cho Oyu located in Tibet in 2023 and the renowned Mount Everest in 2024 once again without supplemental oxygen.

Finally in October of 2024 Sirbaz earned himself his grand feat by summiting Shishapangma in Tibet.

Having bravely fared through the biting cold and flaying winds of the rugged giants, Sirbaz Khan serves as an emblem of inspiration and encouragement for future generations, simultaneously bringing prestige to his country. The journey his passion took him on to shape his bold career is a source of inspiration for us all.

USEFP SESSION

A session was held by USEFP representatives, organised by Cedar, to help students enhance their university search process. The session provided step-by-step guidance on building a CSS Profile and finding universities that are the best fit. Representatives also shared insights on life in the U.S., emphasising how the country welcomes international students and supports them with their studies and accommodation.

Furthermore, they demonstrated how to effectively use the Common App platform, a widely-used application system that allows students to apply to multiple universities with a single application.

Students from AS and A2 attended the session, where their questions were addressed to help simplify their journey toward studying abroad. Throughout the event, students were encouraged to ask questions, and the representatives provided thorough answers to help clarify any doubts, simplifying their journey towards studying in the U.S. The session concluded successfully, with an one-on-one Q&A segment that received positive feedback from attendees.

Overall, the USEFP session was a valuable opportunity for students to enhance their understanding of the U.S. university application process, motivating them to make impactful decisions for their educational futures.

We specially thank the representatives from EducationUSA, from the U.S. Department of State network, for their very informative session.

AS WELCOME BEACH BASH 2024 In a heartwarming display of camaraderie, Cedar College's AS batch gathered for a welcome event that will be remembered for years to come. The beach trip, attended by students from both the PECHS and DHA campuses, showcased the power of connection and community.

The event kicked off with students dressed in the vibrant house shirts – Galahad, Lancelot, Lamorak, and Tristan – coming together to friendships and forge new ones. Laughter and excitement filled the air as they posed for photos, shared stories, and enjoyed each other's company. The beach provided a picturesque backdrop for the festivities. As the day unfolded, the beach activities took center stage. Thrilling volleyball and football matches sparked friendly rivalries, while human Ludo boards and other games brought out the playful side of the students. A refreshing popsicle vendor provided a sweet respite from the heat.

However, the true highlight of the day was the Qawali session.

Featuring soulful renditions of classic songs, the performance had everyone singing along and swaying to the beat. The music transcended individual differences, uniting the students in a shared experience of joy. As the sun dipped into the horizon, painting the sky with hues of gold and crimson, dazzling fireworks display illuminated the evening sky. The breathtaking spectacle capped off an unforgettable day.

Cedar College's beach trip was a resounding success, showcasing the power of community and connection among its students. By providing a platform for socialization and shared experiences, the college fosters lasting relationships that extend beyond academics.

The event highlighted Cedar College's commitment to holistic education, recognizing the importance of social and emotional well-being alongside academic growth, creating unforgettable memories. As the students departed the beach, exhausted but exhilarated, it was clear that this welcome party had achieved something special. More than just a fun-filled afternoon, it had forged a sense of community that would last a lifetime.

UCL INFORMATORY SESSION On October 8th, representatives of the University College, London (UCL), visited Cedar College to conduct an informatory session regarding their undergraduate program. Their purpose was to guide aspiring students on the application process and to brief them about the university's assets. The hour-long session proved enlightening for those planning to apply to the UK. University College London has retained its spot in the ‘Top 10 Universities’ list since 2013 and represents a diverse student body with pupils from all around the world. The representatives also highlighted UCL’s strong research facilities and programmes as well as their dedicated faculty. Courses ranging from the departments of Arts and Humanities, Engineering Sciences, Social and Historical Sciences, Law, Medical Sciences and many more, are offered at UCL undergraduate. Admission requirements for prospective students and scholarships/financial aid system was also talked about in the session. Concluding the session, students were also informed about the regional insights in the area, London having many opportunities for graduating students. It also boasts a multicultural student population, an attractive element for international students.

The representatives, after ending the session, met with our Principal, CEO and senior counselors to discuss future collaborations and new and diverse opportunities for our Knights. This visit not only broadened our students’ vision for university choices, but also promoted future opportunities and likely benefits for our students, in collaboration with University College, London.

WELLNESS WORKSHOP

In an era where mental health has become a serious topic of discussion, Pakistani culture too is breaking down the walls of this taboo and slowly leaning into the discussion. Cedar College has taken a remarkable initiative toward enhancing and supporting its students’ mental wellness by launching the Cedar Wellness Programme, led by Ms. Perin Avari. This programme was designed to be accessible to all students at Cedar, with weekly in-person sessions on campus, as well as online sessions for those unable to attend in person.

We all recognise that our mental health should be our priority but many of us are often unsure of how to do it and where to start. Teenagers who are anxiously transitioning from one phase to another, never stopping to take a breather and just rest. We are so busy worrying about the future that we forget to live in the moment, too overwhelmed by the unrealistic standards we set for ourselves and the self-critical angle we view ourselves with. Sometimes all you need to feel better is to give yourself a moment of a breather and sit with your thoughts. This is exactly what Cedar Wellness Program aims to do, with the mindfulness activities they have in the itinerary.

The Wellness Program aims to: - Foster mindfulness-based self-awareness & nervous system regulation - Manage stress and enhance motivation and productivity - Improve self-worth and self-image - Enhance focus and productivity - Cultivate a healthy relationship with thoughts & emotional regulation There are a lot of upcoming interesting activities by the Cedar Wellness Programme that would make you feel at rest. Although with the exams, deadlines of homework assignments, and personal matters, it is challenging to find a moment of peace but you don’t need more than thirty minutes (max) for each session. Additionally, if you are part of the digital Wellness Program, you can watch the online sessions at your convenience.

AQS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM AQS is a student-led media and journalism non-profit organisation, with two of our Knights, Al-Hamd Khalid and Zunaira Badar leading the said organisation. It caters to the coverage of Pakistan’s social and political causes/ issues and as part of their initiative in social responsibility, AQS recently organised a community service initiative, drawing enthusiastic participation from the students of Cedar College.

The volunteer programme, focusing on goodwill and positivity, arranged a visit to the “Edhi Orphanage Home.” Volunteers actively engaged the children in various sports activities, including throw-ball, football, and tag. The spirit of collaboration and meaningful work was enhanced with the inclusion of art and music. The young artists were given coloured pencils and stencils to creatively focus on their work.

The program also encouraged the students to harness their talents through musical instruments, where they played drums and the piano to music of their choice. Additionally, volunteers led a storytelling session, engaging the kids in an activity that strengthened their memory, focus, and listening skills.

From fiction to reality, horror to wholesome, the volunteers each engaged groups of students in a series of stories with purposeful endings, encouraging critical thinking and reflection.

Concluding the visit on a positive note, the volunteers distributed goody bags among the students, putting smiles on their faces. The day wrapped up with a certificate ceremony, recognizing the volunteers’ efforts and fostering a hopeful spirit for similar future visits. This memorable experience not only impacted the children but also left a lasting impression on the volunteers themselves.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WORKSHOP In a month dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, Cedar College collaborated with SOCH (Serve Our Community Health), a welfare organisation founded by the hardworking students of Dow Medical College, to conduct a workshop for Cedar students.

The sessions, conducted on the 7th of October at the PECHS campus and on the 8th at DHA, highlighted important themes regarding breast cancer such as its symptoms, breast anatomy, types, and early detection methods, aiming to kindle awareness about the disease especially among young women in the hope that the community’s joint efforts may contribute to eliminating the disease to some extent.

Raising awareness is vital for young women as it inhibits certain social taboos when trying to diagnose or prevent it, and deals with people’s underestimations regarding its risks. It is important to note that with the proper knowledge and the right steps in the right direction we can work together to increase the survival rate, as breast cancer proves less harmful the earlier it is diagnosed.

Best Art Interpretations from Bulletin 8 Firstly, the title itself is a beautiful highlight of the journey of selfdiscovery, the term ‘sunrise’ being a metaphor for our inner transformation and new beginnings. The vivid colors remind one of the light and hope after the struggle, much like the sunrise after a long night, the sun representing one’s inner light while the wavy brush strokes evoke a surreal atmosphere yet showing fluidity which perhaps encourages the idea of growth, change and transformation for the greater good.

Engstrom usually has a lady figure in her art pieces, yet the devoid of such in “Internal Sunrise” may allude to the painting being an introspection of one’s own self, or the viewer being the ‘lady in the art’ hence the portrayal of human emotions. The shaky hills and overall appearance may also symbolize one’s struggles and inner turmoil yet the rising sun gives reassurance and hoper, making “Internal Sunrise” a poignant depiction of resilience.

“WE HAD A TEST??!”

ART CORNER With the use of pigmented beeswax, clay, and human hair amongst other materials, Edgar Degas presented this sculpture in 1881, naming it ‘Little Dancer Aged Fourteen’. Although it was deemed ugly and wasn’t well-received by the critics, this sculpture went on to become one of the most beloved bronze casts, innovative and unconventionally demonstrating astounding realism. Dressing her in real cloth, it is said that the ballerinas of Paris Opera Ballet influenced Degas, Degas specifically was inspired by Marie Van Goethem, and while such dancers were called "petits rats de l'opéra," translating to “opera rats”, this art piece portrayed the terrible reality of such ballerinas who were often also a target of the “male gaze”, as it portrays a girl aged fourteen as she struggles for dignity with her head held high, despite the physical and mental difficulty she’s in, expressed through her facial expression and maybe the medium used as well. Degas represents the working class through this artwork, the sculpture coming under the idea of contemporary realism.

Concluding this week’s Bulletin we’d like to give everyone a friendly reminder to enjoy the beginning of the warm and familiar season of October to their fullest.

Especially so, now that the tests are over and we can resume life at its usual, unperturbed pace before we once again busy ourselves up with the midterms. We also truly hope that this Bulletin is a nice, lighthearted read where it covers the relished ‘AS Welcome’ and University fair but also a salient one where it talks about the Breast Cancer Awareness.
