OVERTIME IS HAMMERTIME IN NORTH EAST WIN OVER ELKTON

NORTH EAST–Before the start of overtime of a UCBAC

Susquehanna Division girls` basketball contest against Elkton, North East head coach Matt Haack preached patience with the basketball.

The Indians got good looks at the basket in the first 90 seconds of the extra sessions, and

instead of being patient, they were aggressive with their shot selection and scored seven quick points en route to a 42-38 home victory over the Golden Elks Thursday.

“The girls must have known something that I didn’t because I said ‘let’s slow it down and play our half-court offense,’ and they said ‘let’s just attack the rim and see what happens.’”

Haack said. “You know what, they were aggressive, and it paid off early. … I just credit their intensity. We talked to them about playing for four quarters, and they did it for four quarters plus tonight.”

When North East won the opening tipoff in overtime, the ball wound up in the hands of Katy Hammer, who attacked the basket, and she made a

layup to give the Indians the lead four seconds into the extra period.

After Reagan Hassell made a basket late in the first minute, Hammer made a three-pointer to make it a seven-point game at 39-32 with 2:30 remaining, and Hammer said North East just fed off the emotion of the crowd in overtime.

“I think we really fed off the

energy of the crowd and the game in general,” Hammer, who had five points, said. “We had a really clutch first minute.”

The Indian defense clamped down on the defensive end in overtime as well, as they did not allow a field goal until there was 15 seconds remaining in the extra period, and that defense in the final enabled them to hold on to the win.

Before overtime, the teams’ engaged in a defensive slugfest in which both sides had prolonged stretches of defensive dominance in which they did not allow a field goal for over 10 minutes.

NORTH EAST BASKETBALL JUNIOR

Luke averaged 30.5ppg against Kent County and North Harford last week then led his team this week to a huge 58-54 win over Perryville. North East has put together three consecutive wins for the first time this season.

North East has six games remaining on the season and four are against Cecil Teams.

Saylor had an excellent week for the Lady Indians, leading the team with 35 total points, to go along with 10 rebounds, 6 steals, 4 assists, and 2 blocks in games vs. Tri-State, Bel Air, and Elkton. She demonstrated leadership throughout the week and continued to improve her game and find more ways to consistently attack the rim. Saylor also stepped up big to sink two clutch free throws to send the game to overtime in a hard fought rivalry game win vs. Elkton.

NORTH EAST GETS WIN AGAINST ELKTON IN OVERTIME. 42-38

Elkton to just one point from the start of the second quarter until there was 5:39 left in the third quarter, turning a 14-8 deficit into a 22-15 lead.

The Golden Elks responded with a strong defensive stretch of their own when they held North East to just one point from 5:39 left in the third until 3:50 left in regulation, allowing them to take a 28-26 lead.

After Myaven Ewing gave Elkton a 32-30 lead with a basket with 1:28 remaining, Saylor

Bare got fouled with 24 seconds remaining, sending her to the foul line; and Bare coolly made both free throw to tie the game at 32-32, bouncing back after struggling from the charity stripe earlier in the game.

“She’s done that quite often. We don’t always get the numbers (from the foul line) that we want, but late in the game, we have made a few of them,” Haack said. “T was that mindset that we had a will to win.”

Saylor led North East with 15 points while Alania Foran and Abigail Cisneros had 9 and 8

points respectively.

Milana Redden scored 15 to led the Golden Elks while Aleigha Gangemi scored 11, and Elkton head coach Gabe Sherrod said his team needs to work on winning those 50/50 balls that decides games.

“Number one, we are still a work in progress. … We make mistakes that we shouldn’t be making. We give up some easy things, and our effort plays are so-so,” Sherrod said. “We have to get better at effort plays, and that was the difference tonight.”

West Nottingham building Girls Wrestling Team for National Competition.

COLORA - The WNA Wrestling program took its next steps toward becoming a nationally recognized home for Girls Wrestling when it travelled to Massachusetts to compete at their Andover Academy’s 9th Annual Girls Tournament.

Phillips Andover Academy are the defending National Prep Tournament champions and their event hosts some of the top ranked girls wrestlers in the country. Coach Kacey Michelsen and West Nottingham Academy committed to the reestablishment and development of the sport of Wrestling altogether at the Colora school while also ambitiously setting their sights on building a full girls program as part of their grand vision.

This weekend a local 9th grade wrestler, Reagan Ramadan, from North East and her teammate, Kiia Huovinen from Finland, stepped out on the mats and furthered that goal by each placing 2nd at this top flight tournament.

Reagan made the championship final after dominating her bracket and pushed last years 138 pound bronze medalist late into the third period down just 2-0. With the match there for the taking, Reagan went for gold resulting in a fall, but she certainly made an impression that won’t be forgotten when the Rams show up for the National Prep Championships in just four weeks.

tling Club with Coach Tim Taylor and is showing the strong base she got through that program very early on in her High School career.

Kiia Huovinen wrestled the defending 132 pound gold medalist in her final and narrowly missed hitting a lateral drop on a wrestler that is a significant favorite to defend her title this year.

Coach Michelsen said, “I am incredibly proud of Reagan and Kiia. Their strength, courage, and willingness to learn from this experience are exactly the foundations that we were hoping to develop in this program. I can’t wait to see what they are able to do for the rest of this season and what their example will mean to those that follow them as we

continue to go to big tournaments with high expectations. We had one All-American last year and we plan to at least double that this year. This weekend brought us a little closer toward realizing that goal”.

The WNA Wrestling Coach plans on hosting several girls specific wrestling clinics as well as other wrestling camps and events at the school because, “I’m committed to building wrestling at WNA, no doubt, but I am also fiercely dedicated to building girls wrestling and doing whatever we can do to contribute to what is an already rich tradition of tough wrestling coming from this county”.

Eagles score first road victory of season in 53-44 win against Titans

NORTH EAST - Full of angst

after the previous night’s loss against Rising Sun, Bohemia Manor claimed their first road victory of the season with a 53-44 win against Tome School Wednesday night.

The Eagles muscled their way to a 13 point lead in the first quarter. “We brought a

lot of angst and bitterness into today’s game. Last night was a hard loss”, said Bohemia Manor Coach Sandy Grimes, “We pressed more in the second half, I like to press but I don't always have the horses that want to press. Winning’s never easy, especially on the road. This is our first road win of the year. We didn't think we’d just come in here and

roll them. We have not won a game on the road this year and this was our first.”

The Titans fought back to erase the deficit, but fell short. Herald Beljour drained 14. Sam Booth and Warren Hersh added 8 respectively. For Bohemia Manor, Chris Harris knocked down 11 and Landon Horsey led all scorers with 16.

GARVIN SEALS A TIGERS WIN OVER C.M. WRIGHT

By Kevin Phillips NORTH EAST– Going into its final match of Friday’s UCBAC wrestling battle with visiting C. Milton Wright, Rising Sun held a precarious six-point lead, meaning if the Mustangs a pinfall victory could force a tiebreaker to determine the match.

However, Tyler Garvin

dispelled all worry about a tiebreaker as he pinned his opponent in 8 seconds at his match at 113 pounds, securing a 42-30 victory for the Tigers Friday night.

“I had to go out and finish the job. I had to put in my plan, get out there and get the pin quick,” Garvin said.

“That’s what I did.”

Garvin’s victory was Ris-

ing Sun’s sixth pinfall victory out of eight overall, and the key stretch of the match was when the Tigers scored three straight pinfall victories at 182, 195 and 220 pounds respectively.

With Rising Sun trailing the Mustangs 24-18 midway through the meet, Mason Testerman stepped on the mat for his match at

182 pounds, and he tied the meet at 24-24 with a pinfall victory in 1:47.

After Elijah Farr won his match at at 195 pounds in 1:17 to give the Tigers a 3024, Kaleb Johnson followed that up with pinfall victory in 2:50 to make it a 12-point game, and both Farr and Johnson had to go down a weight class to help Rising

Sun complete their lineup.

“I think they are wrestling great. We had two guys come down and make weight 220 to 195 and heavyweight to 220, and they put in the work. Our 182 to 220 got us pins, got us big points for the match and allowed us to pull ahead,”Testerman said.

C.M. Wright won the next two matches via decisions,

setting the stage for Garvin’s decisive match.

The Tigers won the first four matches of the evening, starting with Xzavier Brown winning at 120 pounds via a 4-2 decision, and Tyler Henderson following that up with a pinfall victory at 126 pounds.

Austin Horn made it 15-0 with a pinfall victory at 132 pounds, and Zach Garvin capped off the hot start with a 6-1 decision at 138 pounds to make it 18-9.

The Mustangs won the next four matches to take the lead before Rising Sun’s heavyweights took over.

The win against C.M. Wright represented a bounceback for the Tigers as they fell to Steven Decauter 46-28 earlier in the tri-meet

“We knew we were looking forward to this next match, and it was a big match for us with it being an UCBAC match,” Seth Garvin said. “We told them that, ‘They

had to go out and wrestle each individual match like they know how to wrestle. Don’t worry about anybody else’s match.Wrestle your match.’ We didn’t want to give up bonus points. Make the match go the distance if you do lose. It was huge for us because we had a match go to forfeit.”

TIGERS FALL TO SEAHAWKS 46-28

NORTH EAST-In the second event of Friday’s tri-meet occurred between Rising Sun and Stephen Decatur, and in a highly competitive match, the host Tigers fell 46-28 to the Seahawks, who earned nine total victories.

Rising Sun earned five victories, four via pinfall, and they still had a chance to win the meet with victories in the final two matches, but

Stephen Decatur clinched victory with two pinfall victories, bringing their total of five total pinfall victories.

Tiger head coach Seth Garvin felt his team had a chance to pull off the rally, but they could not get the results they needed.

“It came down to a couple matches. In the 126 pound match, our kid was right in the match, but he got pinned. That was a nine-point swing,” Garvin

said. “There were a couple of matches that were close. In the 138-pound match, it was really close, and the kid we wrestled won the War at the Shore a couple of weeks ago and is ranked in the top 5. It was a good match but not the result we wanted.”

Rising Sun got pinfall victories from Tyler Garvin at 113 pounds, Connor Dube at 145 pounds, Mason Testerman at 185 pounds and Elijah Far at 120 pounds,

and Xzavier Brown earned a 13-1 majority decision at 120 pounds for the Tigers’ other victory.

The win over the Tigers was the Seahawks second of the evening as they defeated C. Milton Wright by the score of 61-9 as Stephen Decatur won 12 of 14 matches, including via pinfall.

Cecil Strive Elite conducting Open Tryouts for upcoming season

Cecil Strive Elite will be Conducting Open Tryouts for the upcoming AAU basketball season. Tryouts for boys ages 11-14 will begin on February 23rd, 2023. Tryouts for boys ages 15-17 will begin on March 6, 2023. This will be Cecil Strive Elite's 3rd year under Director Raheem Gatewood and Administrators Leroy Hill and Will Riddle.

Cecil Strive Elite provides youth athletes of Cecil County with an opportunity to take their drive and passion to the next level. The dedication of the staff is to provide athletes with an enriching program helping them turn their potential into performance.

Registration will remain open until February 21st. Tryouts will be held at Cherry Hill Middle School @6:30pm. Tryouts will be closed to the public, only

registered participants and parents will be admitted. There will be a 5th & 6th grade team for 11-12 year olds and a 7th & 8th grade team for 13-14 year old. Registration for high schoolers, 15 - 17 year olds, will also close February 21st with tryouts being held at Cherry Hill Middle School @6:30pm and closed to the public. There will be a 15u team for 9th grade and a 16-17 team for 10th & 11th grade.
