Dear Members, Partners, and Friends of the New Jersey Turfgrass Association,
As we step into a new year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the incredible achievements of our association and the broader green industry in New Jersey. The recent NJ Green Expo was a testament to the passion, innovation, and collaboration that define our community. But more than that, it was a celebration of the camaraderie and family spirit that make our industry so special.
The NJ Green Expo once again proved to be a premier event, bringing together industry professionals, educators, and students to share knowledge, showcase cuttingedge technology, and celebrate the advancements in turfgrass management, landscaping, and environmental stewardship. The energy and enthusiasm at the Expo were palpable, and it was inspiring to see so many of you come together to learn, network, and grow.
What stood out most to me, however, was the sense of togetherness that permeated the event. Our industry is more than just a profession—it’s a family. Whether we were exchanging ideas in the exhibit hall, sharing stories over lunch, or cheering each other on during demonstrations, the bonds we share were evident. This camaraderie is what sets us apart and strengthens our ability to tackle challenges and seize opportunities together.
As we reflect on the success of the NJ Green Expo, I am thrilled to look ahead to our next events, which promise to continue this tradition of learning, networking, and community building. Mark your calendars for the Rutgers Golf Classic, May 5, 2025 a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a day on the greens while connecting with colleagues and friends. Following that, we have the highly anticipated Rutgers Field Days July 29th & 30th 2025, where we’ll dive into the latest research, techniques, and innovations in turfgrass management. These events are not just about professional development—they’re about coming together as a family to celebrate our shared passion for this industry.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the NJ Green Expo—our dedicated volunteers, sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, and attendees. Your commitment to excellence and your willingness to share your expertise are what make this event so impactful year after year. And your kindness, generosity, and sense of community are what make this industry feel like home.
Jason Osterhoudt NJTA President
As we look ahead, the NJTA remains steadfast in its mission to support Rutgers University as well as advance the turfgrass industry in New Jersey. We will continue to provide educational opportunities, advocate for our members, and promote the importance of healthy, sustainable turfgrass systems. But we will also continue to foster the spirit of family and camaraderie that makes our association so unique. Together, we can ensure that our industry thrives and that we leave a positive legacy for future generations.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the New Jersey Turfgrass Association. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to seeing you at the Rutgers Golf Classic and Rutgers Field Days. Let’s continue to grow, learn, and celebrate as a family.
Wishing you a prosperous and fulfilling year ahead, surrounded by the warmth and support of our NJTA family.
Warm regards, Jason Osterhoudt President, NJTA

On Monday, May 5, 2025, the 29th Rutgers Turfgrass Research Classic will be held at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club, Bedminster, NJ. This site has been our host for most of those 29 years. It is a magnificent location. Everything about the club is extremely professional and the three golf courses are always in tournament ready conditions and are challenging but fair for every level of golfer. The club’s three courses offer us the opportunity to host very large fields. In 2024 we had 408 golfers and we expect to match that number in 2025!
The reason for our optimism is because this Golf Classic has become the “can’t miss” event. Attendees come from all over the states and Canada. People attend this event because of what it does for the turfgrass industry. It is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who, in conjunction with Cece Peabody and the New Jersey Turfgrass Foundation, plan and execute everything that is scheduled for the day. That includes an inclusive breakfast, lunch from the grill on several locations on all three courses, a truly Grand Reception, team golf prizes, a massive Silent Auction, a 50/50, and perhaps the best raffle for golf prizes that I have ever seen to end the day. Last year’s prizes were valued at over $11,000.
Through the years this event has raised over $2 million dollars and from that the NJTF has been able to give $1.8 million dollars to support the Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science. A major reason for its success is the dedication and participation of the turfgrass scientists at Rutgers. Their efforts, combined with the NJTF’s leadership, has created what many consider to be the best and biggest one day turfgrass fundraiser in the country!
There are many levels of sponsorship starting with Premier Sponsors, followed by Eagle, Birdie, Par and Hole Sponsors. Teams and individuals are welcome as are individuals who may only attend the Grand Reception after golf.
Use the registration form inside this issue or contact Cece Peabody for more information and to sign up. Join the list of Premier, Eagle, Birdie and Par Sponsors and we look forward to seeing you on May 5, 2025.

One of GCSAA’s invited speakers entered the trade show at Expo in December and stopped in his tracks, right in front of the NJTA booth. “It’s like the 1980’s!” he said to me, excited by the energy and strong sense of community pulsing through the room. Later, at the dinner we hold for our speakers, he continued that theme- “I speak at a lot of shows and this one is just special!”
His comments made the 27 people around him smile and talk about our conference and why they like coming to the Borgata Hotel in early December. They liked the interaction and connections, the chance to speak to an audience eager to hear what was new and how to solve their problems, and the overall vibe of our three-day show.
These comments echoed others I spoke with throughout the week. The Expo Committee works hard to provide interesting speakers and topics, and to also deliver the continuing education points needed to maintain our professional spray licenses. When we get it right, the days just seem to flow effortlessly, and we look on with satisfaction. And when we get it wrong (the time needed for onsite registration on Tuesday morning is a concern; delaying lunch on Wednesday by a half hour was a mistake) we take notes and go to work on next year’s program.
Next year’s Expo planning is already in progress. Three key speakers from out of state have been confirmed, consultations with trade show partners have taken place to understand their preferences, and an agreement has been made to extend the relationship with the Borgata team for the next three years.
Chris Carson, Green Expo Chairman
Our trade show experienced consistent activity throughout both days, with attendees engaging in networking and discussing their business needs, visiting with presenting partners to learn about new developments, and partaking in the food and drink available on the show floor.
The show had a high level of participation, resulting in many companies committing for next year, and requiring us to reconfigure our layout to accommodate several requests for additional booth spaces.
I trust you have expressed your gratitude to Cece Peabody, Angela Adamchak, and the rest of the registration team for their exceptional efforts. Their professionalism and dedication are essential to the success of our show.
We also extend our gratitude to the companies that sponsor our activities. Their support enables us to present a high-quality show and provide financial assistance to the Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science.
We hope that you enjoyed your time at Expo, and that you had the chance to expand your professional and personal network and open doors to new partnerships and friendships.
NJTA is committed to helping develop our thriving turfgrass community, and if you have a suggestion or comment that might help, please let Cece or me or any Board Member know -- we will add your thoughts to our planning for Expo 2025.

As March 1st quickly approaches, lawn care businesses across the Garden State are gearing up for the growing season. Are you spring-ready? From hiring to marketing and operations, there is still plenty to do and nothing is more important than compliance and safety.
Before the fertilizer blackout period ends, take some time to review these key compliance items.
Ensure your business pesticide license is current and up to date. Businesses must obtain a license for each office location, and all business locations must employ at least one licensed Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator.
Each location must have its own responsible Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator, as the same applicator cannot be listed for more than one physical location.
Before sending your technicians into the field, confirm that each employee has an up-to-date Pesticide Operator license.
Onboarding new lawn technicians this spring? Ensure your company’s onboarding and training processes are up to date with the Pesticide Operator license requirements.
Although no test is required, applicants must complete a NJ DEP-approved Basic Pesticide Training Course and 40 hours of on-the-job training. Once these requirements are met, you can submit Form VPA-028 with all necessary documentation to obtain a Pesticide Operator license.
In New Jersey, anyone applying fertilizer for hire— including lawn care professionals, sports field managers, and municipal groundskeepers—must obtain ProFACT certification. To obtain ProFACT certification, visit profact.rutgers.edu.
Note: ProFACT credits are also offered at NJTA’s July Field Days and December Green Expo.
Before making your first application, double-check that your client has had sufficient time to review and sign your Consumer Information Notice (CIN).
A CIN is a legally required document that the NJDEP mandates all commercial application businesses provide to their clients. This allows clients to make informed decisions and take necessary precautions before and after pesticide application.
This notice ensures transparency by including details such as:
• The pesticide name
• Active ingredients
• EPA registration number
• Potential application dates
• Possible health effects
• Safety precautions
Make sure a copy of your 2025 CIN is accessible in your office in case it needs to be provided during an inspection.
Making compliance a core part of your lawn care company’s culture is essential for long-term success, growth, and reputation. Using the downtime in the winter months to create, review, or improve your fertilizer and pesticide compliance procedures will ensure a smooth start this spring.

NJTA believes in supporting our allied associations and their shows. NJTA had a booth at the Total Pro Show the last week in January where we had the opportunity to meet and greet attendees to introduce NJTA and engage for membership, to share our events, and to vocalize how NJTA supports the turfgrass industry and our connection to Rutgers University, Center for Turfgrass Science. A win-win for all!
NJTA will also have a booth at the Landscape New Jersey Show, Feb 26th at the Meadowlands Expo Center, Secaucus NJ
Introducing Maxtima® fungicide, an advanced new turf-safe DMI that can be sprayed anywhere on your course for unrivaled broadspectrum disease control. Each year, representatives from many turfgrass associations gather to honor Rutgers Turfgrass students with the presentation of scholarships and a casual dinner. A gathering of students, professors, friends, professionals and family celebrate the achievements of students in turfgrass. The event is hosted by NJAES [New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station], Rutgers CTS [Center for Turfgrass Science], and Rutgers OCPE [Office of Continuing Professional Education].
The New Jersey Turfgrass Foundation presents over $10,000 in scholarships each year that honor many past NJTA presidents and industry professionals. We congratulate those students for their dedication and are grateful for their commitment to themselves, their studies, and the industry.

The prolonged dry spell took a significant toll on turfgrass. Unirrigated turf whether it be lawns, sports fields, or golf courses quickly showed signs of drought stress and dormancy. Turfgrass that did not receive supplemental irrigation before the end of the 2024 growing season remained in a weakened state, with minimal—if any— recovery before winter. Now, as we look ahead to spring, the long-term consequences of the drought remain uncertain. While winter has brought some precipitation, New Jersey is still classified as being in a drought.
Cool-season grasses—including bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescues—typically rely on fall fertilization to recover from summer stress, as well as help to increase root growth and shoot density heading into winter. However, with the lack of rainfall last fall, many lawns did not receive the water needed to activate the benefits of fall fertilization.
The U.S. Drought Monitor tracks drought intensity across the nation, using a classification system ranging from Abnormally Dry (D0) to the most extreme level of drought (D4). As of now, northern New Jersey is experiencing moderate drought conditions (D1), while the southern portion of the state remains in extreme drought (D3). These persistent dry conditions raise an important question beyond the initial impact we saw this fall, will these dry conditions cause bigger issues for winter turf desiccation than in previous years? This winter has had some significant temperature fluctuations and if soil moisture remains inadequate, turf plants could lose water faster than they can absorb it, leading to increased injury or even turf loss by spring.
Ryan Petitti, Green Lawn Fertilizing, NJTA Director
Key considerations as we enter the spring Will Lawns Recover This Spring?
Turfgrass recovery remains uncertain and will largely depend on the severity of last year’s drought stress in each area and the availability of moisture early in the season. Areas without access to supplemental irrigation will experience greater difficulty in restoring turfgrass back to health.
on
Ongoing dry conditions this spring may further hinder the soil incorporation of preemergent herbicides, limiting their effectiveness in preventing weed germination. Combine this with sparser turfgrass from the drought and it creates an ideal opportunity for crabgrass to thrive.
Annual Weeds: What to Expect?
The dry conditions last fall resulted in fewer visible winter annual weeds. Did winter annuals attempt to germinate but perish due to insufficient soil moisture, or did seedlings just remain dormant? If so, will we see a significant flush in winter annuals once soil moisture levels improve? Only time will tell.
While the full impact of the 2024 drought is still unfolding, proactive management will be crucial for turfgrass recovery. Turf managers and homeowners should prioritize monitoring soil moisture levels, implementing targeted irrigation practices, and adjusting fertilization strategies to support recovery this spring.
The excitement is building as the New Jersey Turfgrass Foundation’s Silent Auction kicks off with its rallying cry: “Bid Early, Bid Often!” NJTA’s Silent Auction committee is on a mission to energize bidders, turning every purchase into valuable support for turfgrass research and the groundbreaking work of The Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science.
As a cornerstone of the Rutgers Turfgrass Classic and the Rutgers Turfgrass Field Days, the Silent Auction offers attendees an incredible chance to snag an array of unique, high-value items—all while backing an important cause. Whether you’re eyeing a round of golf at an exclusive course, a piece of signed sports memorabilia, discounted industry products, or even a thrilling stack of lottery scratch-offs, every bid fuels vital initiatives like turfgrass research, economic surveys, scholarships, and grants at Rutgers University.
And the impact is real—since 2005, these auctions have generated over $312,000 for the Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science research! So, get ready to place your bids, score amazing deals, and support the future of turfgrass science in New Jersey!
Planning for the Silent Auction begins well in advance of the Rutgers Turfgrass Classic in spring and Rutgers Turfgrass Field Days in summer. Committee members actively seek donations from vendor representatives, NJTA members, and merchandise companies, ensuring a diverse selection of auction items to appeal to all attendees.
As donations roll in, item details are cataloged, starting bids are set, and fair pricing is determined. This meticulous process— spanning months—includes collecting, storing, and curating unique and exciting items for each event, keeping the auction fresh and engaging year after year.
Bob Shinn, Silent Auction Chair, NJTA Director
Auction Day: Let the Bidding Battles Begin!
The excitement kicks into high gear on auction day, but behind the scenes, meticulous preparation ensures everything runs smoothly. Items are carefully arranged, bid sheets are prepped, and eager bidders are registered and assigned numbers—then, the action begins!
As the event unfolds, attendees browse, strategize, and place their bids, each hoping to walk away victorious. When the final bids are in and the auction closes, the thrill continues as winners claim their prizes or arrange for delivery. It’s a fast-paced, competitive, and rewarding experience - all in support of a great cause!
If you would like more information or to setup a donation to the NJTA Silent Auction, please reach out to Bob Shinn via email at rshinn@savatree.com.
