Alumni Award

Christina Barstow [CivEngr’10, MS’10, PhD’16]

Christina Barstow is the chief operating officer for Bridges to Prosperity, a nongovernmental organization providing access to remote communities through the construction of pedestrian footbridges. In this capacity, Barstow is working across programs in East Africa and Latin America. Most prominently, she is overseeing the installation of a planned 355 pedestrian footbridges, a more than $25 million program reaching potentially millions of people with improved access to basic services. This program will be the first of its kind in the world and will connect more than 1.1 million Rwandese to healthcare, educational opportunities and jobs, all by 2024.

Shortly after earning her PhD in 2016, Barstow won the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) fellowship. She moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for two years as a water evaluation and behavior change advisor at the Millennium Challenge Corporation. In that role, she helped guide U.S. policy on improving the quality of global development programs, in particular, in Sierra Leone and Indonesia.

In 2012, she became the program manager for DelAgua Health in Rwanda, where, over a four-year period, she managed thousands of community health workers in 7,500 villages across the country while simultaneously working toward her PhD. This program reached nearly 2 million people and reduced diarrhea by 30% and respiratory disease by 25% among children under five, saving 90 lives every year. Barstow directly designed and managed the household training and community engagement that was fundamental to the success of this program, and the model she developed is now being adopted and scaled, in part, by the Gates Foundation and the National Institutes of Health in other cookstove and water treatment interventions in East Africa.

While at CU Boulder, Barstow successfully integrated her passion for international development into her academic career, developing leadership and technical skills while excelling in her coursework. While still an undergraduate, she was president of the CU Boulder chapter of Engineers Without Borders. Barstow remains engaged with CU Boulder as an alumna, through mentorship of several CU students, employment of CU alumni, participation in events including the CU WASH Symposium, and research partnerships with the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering. She also facilitated a funded research agreement for CU Boulder to directly measure the economic and health impacts of Bridges to Prosperity footbridges.

Nima Keivan [PhDCompSci’17]

Nima Keivan graduated from the College of Engineering and Applied Science in 2017 with a PhD in computer science. During his time as a student, his doctoral research was on the leading edge of robot perception and autonomy. The importance of his work was recognized by leading corporations such as Google, Toyota and DAQRI that recruited him to help envision the next generation of autonomous driving and augmented reality capabilities.

Keivan’s most noteworthy achievement to date is the co-founding of robotics company CANVAS Technology, for which he was chief technology officer and lead engineer.

After less than four years in existence, the company was acquired by Amazon in March 2019, an incredible validation of the value of the technology CANVAS produced. Keivan’s talent, vision and leadership drove the technical success of CANVAS. This included assembling a large engineering team; CANVAS reached around 50 employees, mostly technical, before its acquisition.

Since the acquisition, the CANVAS team has played an important role in the robotics progress at Amazon, a company leading in the field due to its highly automated warehouses and other applications. It also has become a large and important part of the robotics industry in Boulder and has helped make the city a major player in the field.

Nima recently joined Xplorer Capital as a Venture Partner. Xplorer is a seed and Series A fund that primarily invests in Business to Business startups that are transforming a traditional industry with robotics, AI, or software.

On top of a demanding professional career, Keivan has stayed closely connected to CU since graduation and has made extraordinary contributions as a recent graduate. He finds time to engage actively in robotics research at CU Boulder – working with and mentoring students, co-authoring research publications, giving guest lectures and promoting roboticsindustry employment opportunities in the area including at CANVAS-turned-Amazon.

Keivan is also a member of the Computing Advisory Board, where he makes active and insightful contributions to the department. Due to his leadership, Amazon Robotics is one of the founding members of the college’s Computing Corporate Affiliates Program. He is particularly dedicated to promoting diversity in the field and serves as a leading voice for equity and inclusion as an advisory board member.

DISTINGUISHED ENGINEERING Alumni Awards David Gupta [ArchEngr’85] Industry & Commerce

David A. Gupta founded SDI in 1996 and today continues to lead the firm as chief executive officer. The company is headquartered in Chicago with offices in Sacramento and Los Angeles and has served some of the largest and most complex utilities, government agencies and airports in the world. The firm has repeatedly been recognized as a Best Place to Work by Crain’s Chicago Business, the Chicago Tribune and BuiltIn Chicago.

Gupta is responsible for developing and implementing the company’s strategy and is particularly involved in strategic account development and relationship management throughout the Chicago and Los Angeles areas. Gupta also founded PGV Solutions, a full-service information technology systems integration firm based in southern California, which merged into SDI Presence in June 2016. Prior to founding SDI, Gupta was a senior vice president in the electrical engineering group at Environmental Systems Design, where he was responsible for the design of power and data systems for more than 10 million square feet of commercial real estate.

Gupta volunteers his time and expertise through pro bono consulting and hands-on opportunities as well. His volunteering focus is centered on children, education, economic empowerment, and science and technology and has graduated over 150 students through SDI’s internship and apprentice programs. He supports a host of charities including the Lake Forest Academy, Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, Chicago History Museum, the University of Chicago Graham School, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business Executive Education and, of course, the CU Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science. David has four children (including one CU Boulder graduate) and resides in Chicago with his wife, Dawn.

DISTINGUISHED ENGINEERING Alumni Awards Dena Lund

[ChemEngr’89] Industry & Commerce Dena Lund is the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Sterling Energy Investments LLC. In addition to her full-time job at Sterling, she is also an independent director for Anvil Corporation. Throughout her time at Sterling, Lund has taken the lead on several projects that helped turn the company around. In 2016 and 2020, she successfully led a facility consolidation and cost restructuring effort that buoyed the company through a difficult price environment. Throughout her career, Lund has developed a patent, has been published in Oil and Gas Journal for facility troubleshooting efforts and developments, and has been a featured speaker at the World LNG Fuels conference. She is well-respected across North America for her industry knowledge and professional contributions.

For her technical and volunteer contributions, she received a 2016 Top Women in Energy Award from the Denver Business Journal. It was the third year of this award, which honors 40 women per year in all related fields (exploration, production, engineering, finance, education, etc.). Lund makes it a priority to give back to the industry as well as develop, mentor and train her employees in meaningful and impactful ways. Lund is a supporter of the Women’s Oil and Gas Association, hosting their monthly growth topics and encouraging the women at Sterling to become actively involved. She is an active member of the Denver Petroleum Club’s mentor program and provides the next generation of industry leaders with insight, guidance and advice on their professional career development. Lund is a volunteer board member for the UCHealth Broomfield and Longs Peak Hospitals as well. She also served on the board of directors and as president of the Gas Processors Association Rocky Mountain Chapter. Through this organization, Lund led teams to establish industry events for networking and information exchange and raised funds to distribute as scholarships to engineering students.

Lund has also made significant contributions to CU Boulder since she graduated, and she has done so in a unique way.

Lund was a member of the Chemical Engineering Advisory Board in 1996. At her urging, the advisory board recommended that the capstone design course be radically changed and consider real projects from industry. The faculty took this recommendation to heart and completely revamped the course with great success. Lund and Amoco (where she worked at the time) were among the first to offer a project. Even with her substantial corporate responsibilities, she sponsored a senior design project this past year.

DISTINGUISHED ENGINEERING Alumni Awards Roger McNamara [MAeroEngr’86, PhD’95] Industry & Commerce

Roger McNamara’s notable contributions to the aerospace industry and community over his 40-year career include early research into and characterization of the hazards of orbital debris to space vehicles and operations, and potential mitigation strategies; improvements in space vehicle design and development, for both manned and unmanned systems; and most significantly, leadership in advancing technological innovation for the new era of human deep space exploration.

McNamara’s extraordinary leadership of the historic NASA Orion Exploration Flight Test-1 successful mission was a critical step in NASA’s long-range plan to enable human exploration of deep space. The success of the EFT-1 flight permitted the Orion program to validate several new technology developments and applications for both design and production (separation mechanisms, heat shield material, Van Allen Belt radiation environment, software innovations, and the Orion Test Lab simulation environment). NASA Administrator Charles Bolden summed up the importance of the EFT-1 flight by saying “EFT-1 is the first step to Mars.”

McNamara’s early research into space debris generation and the associated long-term effects in the geosynchronous region has helped to heighten the awareness and associated concerns of the hazards associated with space debris for geosynchronous orbit (GEO) satellites. McNamara’s research has helped to lead both the U.S. and European aerospace communities to evaluate on orbit refueling, re-orbiting and de-orbiting at end of life, and using debris storage orbits.

McNamara has served as an adjunct professor to the University of Denver in the Mechatronics Systems Engineering Master’s Degree Program, focusing on launch vehicles, orbital mechanics and space environments. This successful joint Lockheed Martin-DU program enhances the skill base of Lockheed Martin’s practicing engineers. McNamara has maintained close involvement with the University of Colorado through the Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences and the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research. He has given several lectures to CU classes, met with faculty regarding research and student support, and provided professional assistance to the student chapter of AIAA. He has invited faculty to attend major launches at Cape Kennedy and provided reports of his company’s space projects.

McNamara received his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and his master’s and doctorate degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder.

DISTINGUISHED ENGINEERING Alumni Awards Mark Strobel [MChemEngr’79] Industry & Commerce

Mark Strobel joined 3M Co. in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1979 after receiving his MS in chemical engineering at CU Boulder and his BS in chemistry from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He has spent his entire career in 3M’s Corporate Research Process Laboratory, leading the surface modification technology platform. His research interests include plasma, combustion, UV and corona (dielectric barrier discharge) surface modification processes, polymer surface analysis, adhesion phenomena and contact angles and surface energetics. Strobel has written more than 35 articles for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and holds 27 U.S. patents. He was elected to the exclusive 3M Carlton Society in 2012 for “his technical leadership in corona, flame and plasma processing leading to the Surface Modification Technology Platform.”

Strobel was promoted to 3M corporate scientist in 2013. Of the more than 9,000 technical employees in 3M, there are only 23 corporate scientists.

Strobel’s success is a reflection of the education he received as a CU student, but since his graduation from CU in 1979, he has worked tirelessly to establish deeper connections and a closer relationship between 3M and CU. These efforts culminated in the 2019 signing of a master research agreement (MRA) between CU and 3M that is expected to fund 5-10 research projects each year at CU, totaling up to $1 million in annual funding. Strobel was the genesis of this agreement, and it would not have happened without his vision and commitment to CU and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The MRA was built upon a 25-year research relationship between 3M and the combustion science group in the Paul M. Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Like many outdoor enthusiasts, Strobel and his wife, Joan, enjoy putting on their boots and, sometimes, their backpacks and heading out to a park or trail. Such was the case in 1985 when the Strobels first set their eyes on Pigeon Falls, Minnesota’s highest waterfalls then located on private land within the Grand Portage Indian Reservation. Over the next four years, the Strobels worked tirelessly with the private landowner and with tribal, county and state officials to ensure that Pigeon Falls was protected in perpetuity in what is now Grand Portage State Park.

Strobel didn’t stop at creating one state park. He continued to lead efforts to expand numerous Minnesota parks as vice president and land committee chair of the Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota from 1997 to 2005. He and his wife convinced 3M leaders to donate 310 acres at Crystal Bay and 160 acres at Carlton Peak so they could become key parts of Tettegouche and Temperance River state parks. For this environmental work, the Strobels were awarded the 2012 Ruel Harmon Award, which is the “hall of fame” for Minnesota state parks.

DISTINGUISHED ENGINEERING Alumni Awards Paul Brinkman [CivEngr’96] Industry & Commerce

Paul Brinkman graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. In 2005, he co-founded Brinkman Partners, an integrated real estate company, with his brother, Kevin, and together they led the Fort Collins-based commercial development, real estate and construction company to what it is today – a highly respected company with more than 150 employees and well over $250 million in annual revenue. In 2016, in an effort to attract, retain and reward their outstanding employees, the Brinkmans traded in their ownership stake in the construction company to make the company 100% employee-owned.

In 2018, their real estate company became one of four commercial real estate development companies in Colorado to become a Certified B Corporation.

While CEO, Brinkman was honored as one of the Top 25 CEOs in Colorado by ColoradoBiz Magazine, named the Everitt Real Estate Center Entrepreneur of the Year and to the Real Estate Hall of Fame, and one of BizWest’s Top 40 Under 40 professionals. The company received numerous awards including Best Start-Up Company of the Year by the Fort Collins Coloradoan, Small Business of the Year by the Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce, and Mercury 100 Fastest Growing Companies by BizWest Media. Brinkman created a culture of giving within the company manifested in BrinkmanGIVES – a community impact program dedicated to giving to nonprofit organizations that are, like the company, striving to build and develop stronger communities through talent, time and treasure. In 2020, Brinkman was presented the Excellence in Philanthropy Award from the United Way of Larimer County.

While he is engaged deeply in his local community, Brinkman also gives back to his alma mater. In addition to his personal philanthropy supporting the college and collaborative efforts with the Leeds School of Business, he also volunteers a significant amount of time to better the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Brinkman has served as a mentor for several students, assisting them in navigating the challenges of college and preparing for a career. He’s also been a longtime, active member of the college’s Construction Engineering Management advisory board and the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering advisory board. In recognition of his deep engagement and desire to see the college continue to improve, Brinkman joined the Engineering Advisory Council in 2019.

Brinkman not only has had many successes in his business ventures but is also a dedicated husband, dad, and family man.

He makes choices in his life to spend quality time with his family. His innate way of balancing life with what is important is something to be admired. Brinkman lives in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, with his amazing wife, Chresta, and four kids: Isabella, Noah, Miela and Paul Greyson.

DISTINGUISHED ENGINEERING Alumni Awards Nancy Eckman Clanton [ArchEngr’75] Industry & Commerce

Nancy Eckman Clanton is a pioneer in the illumination engineering field. A 1975 CU Boulder graduate in architectural engineering and a registered professional engineer, she is the founder and CEO of Clanton & Associates, a prominent lighting design firm that regularly employs University of Colorado graduates and interns.

Clanton and her team’s work has earned national recognition from the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, National Institute of Building Sciences, International Dark-Sky Association, U.S. Green Building Council, American Institute of Architects, and others who have taken note of her deep and consistent dedication to the sustainability of the built environment.

Clanton’s work as lighting leader for the Greening of the White House, Greening of the Pentagon, and Greening of the Grand Canyon National Park are remembered as foundational moments in the history of sustainable design and led to the creation of the U.S. Green Building Council. With more than 30 buildings certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system and 11 buildings named by the AIA Committee on the Environment’s Earth Day Top Ten List, Clanton and her team have set the bar for engineers and designers in the field focused on energy and environment.

Among the greatest impacts that Clanton has made throughout her career is her leadership in developing lighting standards and energy codes with far-reaching and long-lasting changes that have moved the United States toward sustainability and reduced energy use. Her company supports development of energy code and standards such as California’s Title 24 exterior lighting section, the Department of Defense United Facilities Criteria Lighting Guidelines, and the General Service Administrations P100 Design Standards.

Clanton has served on IES, IALD, and ACEC board of directors, including as ACEC Colorado chapter president. She participates on committees with a focus on the quality of the built environment such as the NIBS Low Vision Design Committee, ANSI representative on the international ISO TC205 WG7, and the National Academy of Science’s Committee for the Assessment of Solid-State Lighting. She dedicates her time, both during and outside of work, to the field of lighting through these advisory boards, speaking and keynoting at national and international conferences, and mentoring her employees to do the same.

Clanton continually donates her resources, time and energy to the CU Lighting Program. She consistently guest-lectures in lighting classes, speaks at IES student chapter events, and provides support for the CU Solar Decathlon Team. She acts as a mentor for emerging professionals and students and serves as a professional advisory board member for the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering.

DISTINGUISHED ENGINEERING Alumni Awards Scott Hartman [AeroEngr’89] Government Service

Scott Hartman has had a multifaceted career, highlighted by distinguished service in the U.S. Navy and more than 25 years with NASA in the International Space Station Program Office, the Flight Operations Directorate and the Commercial Crew Program.

Upon CU graduation in May 1989 with a BS degree in aerospace engineering and participation in Navy ROTC, Hartman received a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy and served for five years aboard the USS ROARK (FF-1053) and the USS HORNE (CG-30) in roles of increasing leadership and responsibility. His contributions included roles as combat information center officer, anti-submarine warfare officer, navigator and test director for the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System.

In 2019, Hartman completed a 30-year career as a Naval Officer, including time in both active and reserve components.

During his 25 years in the Reserve, he was selected five times from a nationwide pool of candidates to serve as a commanding officer of Reserve units in Texas, Florida, South Carolina and California.

He made multiple deployments overseas, including being recalled to active duty in 2016, where he served one year as the chief staff officer for a Joint Special Operations Task Force in Djibouti, Africa. He led a staff of department heads supporting over 1,300 military and civilian team members dispersed across the Middle East and Africa. He was also responsible for building relationships with the State Department, local government officials, senior general and flag officers and other joint military commands. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his performance.

In his roles at NASA, he performed as an ascent/entry guidance and procedures officer for Space Shuttle launches and landings, monitoring guidance and navigation from Mission Control for more than 40 Space Shuttle flights. He currently serves as the entry, descent and landing lead for the Commercial Crew Program, NASA’s partnership to develop and fly human space transportation systems. He has worked with both Boeing and SpaceX to design and deliver safe and effective systems for flying astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

He also led several university recruiting trips to CU for the Mission Operations Directorate and participated in an on-campus aerospace senior design class, providing an overview of NASA activities. He has also been a resource for the CU Designing for Defense class.
