Schedule

eccs.mn/screening

The early childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening is a FREE and simple check of how your child is growing and developing. This is not a test. Your child will not pass/fail.

Between the ages of 3 and 4, screening can detect possible health or learning concerns, so that children can get help before they start school. Parents accompany their child through the approximate hour-long process. After the screening activities, the screener shares information on a child’s growth, development, and learning. Discover more about their development and learning, such as:

Thinking, language, and communication skills

Social and emotional development • Large and small muscle coordination

Height and weight • Vision and hearing • Immunization status

Upcoming Screening Dates:

January 6, 13, 20, 27 t February 3, 10, 17, 24

March 10, 17 t April 14, 21, 28 t May 5, 12, 19

Early childhood developmental screening helps a school district identify children who may benefit from district and community resources available to help in their development. Early childhood developmental screening includes a vision screening that helps detect potential eye problems but is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.

Help Me Grow is an interagency initiative of the State of Minnesota (Department of Education, Department of Health and Department of Human Services) partnering with all local service agencies. While all young children grow and change at their own rate, some children experience delays in their development and a referral might be needed. A referral through Help Me Grow as soon as developmental concerns are identified ensures the best outcomes possible.

After a referral is made to Help Me Grow, a local school district early intervention or preschool special education staff will partner with you to determine if a comprehensive screening or evaluation is needed.

Visit: helpmegrowmn.org to make a referral.

Special Education

Early Intervention Birth through 3 years

Provided within the child’s natural environments, these “Routines-Based Interventions” are based on the child’s daily life and are guided by your family values and priorities. Families are coached in strategies to help improve developmental areas such as cognition and communication, as well as social, motor, and self-help skills. The staff will work with the caregivers to provide training that allows those caregivers to develop their child’s abilities.

Preschool Special Education 3-5 years

Our program strives to help young children interact successfully with friends and family at home, in the community and at school. To achieve this goal, the ECSE staff work as partners with the parents and teachers. Eastern Carver County Schools provides a full continuum of special education and related services depending on each student’s unique special education needs and the goals determined by the student’s Individual Education Planning (IEP) team. Services are provided in the least restrictive learning environment which is appropriate for the individual student.

The Pyramid Model

The Pyramid Model is a framework of evidencebased practices for promoting young children’s healthy social and emotional development. All early childhood programs in Eastern Carver County Schools implement this practice for all learners.

Early Childhood Screening

Early screening is best. Screen at 3!

What is Early Childhood Screening?

This is a free check of how your child is developing and growing. Screening supports children’s readiness for kindergarten and can detect possible health or learning concerns so that children can get help before beginning school.

When should my child be screened?

The Early Childhood Screening program is available to children when they turn three years old. It is required before a child starts kindergarten. Although your child may be screened any time before kindergarten, it is best to do so between three and four years of age so that any health or developmental concerns can be addressed sooner.

Shouldn’t I wait until my child is closer to 5 so they perform better on the screening?

Screening is given based on the age of the child. A three-year old is only asked for what is appropriate for their age. A five-year-old will receive screening appropriate for their development. This is not a test that children will pass/fail. It will help to identify any possible concerns so they may be addressed before school begins. Screening at age three will allow time for extra support prior to kindergarten, if needed.

How do I prepare for an Early Childhood Screening?

You should bring your child’s birth certificate, immunization records, the names and phone numbers of your child’s pediatrician and any other health care providers. You can also bring notes about:

• Things your child does well

• Questions about your child’s health

• Questions about your child’s development such as learning, walking, talking

• Questions about your child’s vision or hearing
