Welcome to Magnifying Abilities

Magnifying Abilities is a social/recreational program for persons 16 and older with intellectual and physical disabilities. The program is designed to enhance community involvement and lifelong learning of people with disabilities. Individuals who participate in the program reside within Carver and Scott County.

Transportation

Magnifying Abilities provides very limited transportation to our events. Occasional bus/van transportation may be offered from our facilities to a field trip location. Participants in need of transportation are encouraged to contact local transportation agencies to arrange individual transportation. The following transportation agencies are for reference only:

Due to privacy concerns, we ask all participants, attending staff and family members to refrain from sharing photos of or tagging other participants on social media without their direct consent.

Exploring Art: Mosaics

Dive into a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes and explore the mesmerizing world of mosaic art! In this class, you will use cut paper and a variety of template choices to unleash your creativity and piece together your very own masterpiece. Participants needing significant assistance to participate should be accompanied. All materials provided. Register/cancel by: May 29

Town Ball Baseball

Come out and enjoy America’s favorite pastime with your Magnifying Abilities friends! Feel the excitement in the air, the crack of the bat, and the cheer of the crowd at one of the best amateur baseball parks in the state, the Mini Met Ballpark in Jordan! Watch the hometown team, the Brewers take on the Chanhassen Red Birds. The Jordan Brewers have generously invited Magnifying Abilities participants and one companion to attend for FREE! Please register to reserve your free admissions. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on and cash to purchase any desired concessions. The Pulse Community Education program (middle school youth) and Magnifying Abilities invites you to drop-in for food and games at Pioneer Ridge Middle School! Bring money to purchase a delicious meal from Rusty Taco food truck. Make new friends and join together for backyard games such as Cornhole, Ladder Golf, giant Connect four, and Bocce Ball!

Cooking with Sandi: Popcorn Toppers

Learn how to take plain popcorn from “meh” to Gourmet! Instructor Sandi will teach participants to make 3 different popcorn topper recipes, simply using common spices and pantry ingredients! Participants will prepare “Popcorn Flights.” Each bag of popcorn will be topped with a different gourmet seasoning recipe, such as Cinnamon Sugar, Smoky BBQ, and Parmesan Garlic. Puzzle Party

Calling all puzzle fans! Give your brain some exercise as you choose your favorite puzzle style to enjoy with your MA friends. Try a group crossword puzzle or choose from a variety of other jigsaw puzzles, word puzzles, shape puzzles, and other brain-teasers! Maybe you have a puzzle or game that you don’t want anymore? Bring a gently used puzzle or game for a puzzle swap with your MA friends. Take home a new-to-you puzzle or game from the swap! Swapping not required to attend. The Little Mermaid at Staring Lake

In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Don’t miss the Eden Prairie Players production of the classic story at the Staring Lake Amphitheater in Eden Prairie. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. There is no fee to attend but please register. Consider making a voluntary donation to the Eden Prairie Players at the event! Participants must be accompanied throughout the evening. Exploring Art: Fireworks Painting

Let this month’s Exploring Art class help you celebrate Independence Day! This class will feature a unique method of painting fireworks. “Spark” your creativity as we explore everyday household items as unconventional paint brushes to see what interesting textures we can create to make our own fireworks art. Daytime Move & Groove

Bring fun and fitness to your Wednesday afternoons with this special daytime fitness experience, featureing a variety of activities that will get you moving and grooving such as yoga, active games, and dance workouts. All 4 sessions will be different so you won’t want to miss any! Registration includes all 4 sessions. Bring a water bottle and your own yoga mat if desired. Shockwaves Water Ski Show

Join your Magnifying Abilities friends and see a FREE Water Ski show by the Shockwaves Water Ski Team. These amazing water skiers will perform pyramids, ballet, barefooting, jumping, wakeboarding and many other crowd-pleasing stunts! Seating is on a hillside so bring a blanket or chair for seating. This is a VERY popular event! Arriving at least 20 minutes early to find parking is recommended. All participants should be accompanied throughout by a companion (no drop-offs). Disney’s Finding Nemo Jr. is a celebration of true friendship, bravery and the love between father and son! Nemo and Marlin remind us to ‘Just Keep Swimming’ in this epic adventure through the ocean. Cooking with Sandi: Fruit Smoothies

Learn to make a healthy, cool and creamy snack! Instructor Sandi will teach participants a basic smoothie recipe with the core ingredients and how to customize the recipe to use your favorite fruits, flavors, and other healthy add-ins! Arboretum Nature Discovery

Enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Arboretum’s Japanese Garden: Seisui-Tei, “Garden of Pure Water”. Join the Arboretum’s Nature-Based Therapeutics staff on a scavenger hunt for symbolic elements in the garden and discover their meaning. Compare Minnesota nature to Japan nature and practice a style of Japanese garden that does not have any plants! Attending companions must also register. Register/cancel by: July 11

Fire Station Tour

Here is your chance to get a closeup look at the operation of a Fire Station! Take a guided tour of the Chaska Fire Station, learn about emergency vehicles, and talk to our brave community firefighters. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about fire safety and emergency tips from the experts! There is no fee for this event, but participants and companions are asked to register to reserve a spot. The Summer Olympics will be starting soon! Get in to the olympic spirit at the MA Track & Field Games! Meet at the Chaska High School Track Stadium and join a team to compete in a variety of friendly races and teamwork games. You might even win a medal! Summer Picnic and Cornhole

Nothing celebrates summer like an outdoor picnic! Join your MA friends for a summer picnic featuring BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, coleslaw, drinks and cookies for dessert! Be entertained by live guitar music from talented musician, Kevin Siefering! Challenge your friends and family to Cornhole and other backyard games! Family, friends, and staff are all invited to attend but must register. Register/cancel by: July 16

Hiking Club

Explore 3 beautiful parks in the area with your Magnifying Abilities friends! This 3-week course will meet at different park locations each week to hike the park, complete a scavenger hunt, and earn a prize! Hikes will be approximately 1 to 2 miles in length. You may register for each hike separately. Hikes will be held at Cleary Lake in Prior Lake, The Landing in Shakopee, and Carver Park Reserve in Victoria. Individuals needing assistance keeping pace must be accompanied. Register/cancel by: July 25

You won’t want to miss all that Big Stone Mini Golf in Minnetrista has to offer! Considered a regional hidden gem, this mini-golf destination has a cleverly designed 14-hole mini-golf course, a remarkable sculpture garden, not to mention their adorable farm animals that roam and graze. Accompanying companions must also register and pay the admission fee. Participants are encouraged to come with family or staff via their own transportation to Big Stone, however a few transportation spots will be available departing from the Family Learning Center in Chaska. Register/cancel by: August 5

MN Twins Game

Twins Fans, join your MA friends in cheering for the MN Twins as they take on the St. Louis Cardinals! Registration includes a ticket to the game and bus transportation to and from the game. Board the bus at Chaska High School at 11:45 am. Game time is 1:10 pm. Bring $$$ for snacks & drinks (credit or debit cards only). Plan to attend rain or shine. Participants needing ANY support MUST have companion who must also register for a ticket to attend. Return time will be approximately 4:30 pm. Register/cancel by: July 31

Exploring Art: Yarn Butterfly Magnets

Don’t miss our final Exploring Art class of the summer featuring fiber arts! You will create a charming yarn butterfly magnet to brighten up your space. Choose from a variety of yarn colors to transform into happy little butterfly wings and create a handy magnet to keep for yourself or use as a great gift for friends or family! All supplies included. Get ready to jive and twist at an electrifying dance class featuring the iconic tunes of “Grease”! Art in the Park

Let nature be your inspiration at Art-in-the-Park with Magnifying Abilities! Meet at Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park for a unique art class that will start with a scavenger hunt to find items in nature. Participants will then create clay imprinted medallions to enjoy nature year round! Not only will you have a blast unleashing your creativity, but you’ll also get to enjoy the great outdoors with friends. All supplies included! Register/cancel by: August 14

Bingo Theme Night

Don’t miss out on the fun at Magnifying Abilities Bingo Theme Night! Join friends once per month for bingo, snacks and prizes! Each month has a different theme...Outer Space Bingo in June, Team USA Bingo in July, and Foodie Bingo in August. Play several rounds of themed bingo followed by traditional bingo. Saturday Bowling

Meet your MA friends at Shakopee Bowl for friendly competition and funfilled bowling! One session will be offered each month. Your registration fee of $10.00 per session includes one hour of bowling and shoe rental, if needed. Bring extra $$$ to purchase snacks and drinks from “The Bowl’s” delicious menu! Per Shakopee Bowl policy, NO outside food or beverage containers allowed. Participants needing significant support should be assisted by a caregiver. Register early as space is limited! Bowling begins at 10:15. Please, no arrivals BEFORE 10:00 AM. Shakopee Bowl does not open until 10:00. See you at “The Bowl”! Register/cancel by: June 19, July 24, August 14

Magnifying Abilities welcomes volunteers! Our events are typically less than 2 hours, primarily early evenings and occasional weekends, and are a lot of fun!! No experience needed, just a friendly attitude and a willingness to get to know and support amazing people with disabilities in your community! Advisory Committee: Wed, May 8: 6 PM

Do you have feedback about the MA program? Consider attending an MA Advisory Committee Meeting (MAAC). This group meets quarterly to provide feedback and share ideas to promote and enhance Magnifying Abilities programming. Committee members may be Magnifying Abilities participants, parents or other family members, staff of participants, or anyone within the Carver and Scott County communities with an interest in promoting quality, enriching experiences for adults with disabilities. The next MAAC meeting is at the Family Learning Center in Chaska. If you would like to attend, please reach out to the Magnifying Abilities Specialist, Susan Meyer at meyers@district112.org or (952) 556-6434.

We want the Magnifying Abilities program to be accessible to everyone! Through generous donations from community partners, scholarship funds are available to offset some registration fees for those experiencing financial need.

Magnifying Abilities Policies and Reminders

First Time Participants

Participants ages 16 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult at all events. Participants age 18 or older must be accompanied by a staff or family member for the first few events.

Some participants may need a family member or home staff to attend with them indefinitely due to medical, safety, or behavioral concerns.

Guidelines for Participating in Activities

The following guidelines have been developed to ensure participants’ safety and enjoyment. The Magnifying Abilities staff supervising each activity will enforce these guidelines.

• Show respect to other participants, families, and staff by using appropriate language and respecting personal space at all times.

• Be able to navigate in a large facility or crowd if attending independently.

• Be respectful of and responsible for the facilities used for events/ classes.

• Avoid activities that may hurt or injure other participants (physically or emotionally).

• Be able to take care of personal hygiene.

• No consumption of alcoholic beverages is allowed at any MA events by participants, family members or staff.

If concerns arise regarding participants, the supervising Magnifying Abilities staff will discuss the situation with involved parties. If needed, families, home staff, or other individuals will be contacted regarding the incident. If issues cannot be rectified, individuals may be required to attend activities with a supervisor or will be asked to not attend the activity for a period of time.

Expectations of Participant’s Staff

• Assist with any medical/emergency concerns that arise with your participant.

• Cell phone on silent mode.

• Assist your participant with bathroom breaks.

• All district properties are tobacco and alcohol free.

• Assist with any behavior issues.

• Assist your participant in any way that is needed.

• Speak respectfully to all participants.

• Notify Magnifying Abilities staff of any issues with other participants.

• Only give permission to your participants regarding restrooms/leaving activity.

Dietary Concerns

Please share dietary concerns with the Magnifying Abilities Specialist prior to attending events. Magnifying Abilities cannot guarantee all diet requests will be accommodated at our events, but we will attempt to provide alternatives if possible. Participants with special diet concerns are also welcome to bring their own food to any MA event at which food is provided, unless otherwise indicated.

Changes and Cancellation Policy

All Magnifying Abilities events are subject to changes and cancellations. In the event that MA needs to change or cancel an activity, we will notify registered participants via our facebook group, email and/or phone. A full voucher refund will be provided for the event if canceled by Magnifying Abilities. Cancellation decisions made by outside vendors (i.e. trips, tours, sporting events) will not be subject to refunds. If the event location needs to be changed, but held on the original date, no refund will be provided. Cancellations or changes are made before 4 pm for weeknight activities or 2 hours before the event on weekends.

If a participant needs to cancel his/her registration prior to the cancellation deadline, please call (952) 556-6434 for a full voucher refund. Cancellation deadlines are listed with each event description. Magnifying Abilities cannot issue refunds after the cancellation deadline.

Drop Off/Pick Up

For the safety of our participants, staff, parents and care providers are required to accompany the participant to and from the activity area. Please arrive no sooner than 15 minutes prior to the start of events, or as indicated in the course confirmation email. If dropping off participants, please pick up promptly at the scheduled activity conclusion time.

A confirmation receipt will be emailed to you specifying the activities that you are enrolled in.

Registration deadlines are listed with each event description. Please register early! Some classes fill quickly. Participants may be put on a waitlist when capacities are reached. MA cannot guarantee a spot for any registration received after the deadline. Please note, Magnifying Abilities has very limited support staff at our events. Most events will require participants with physical or behavioral needs to be accompanied by staff or a caregiver. Attending support staff/caregivers may need to register separately as indicated in each event description.

Registration and Payment All participants must be registered for Magnifying Abilities events. We are not able to accommodate drop-ins. Payment for each activity is required at the time of registration.
