SCHOOL

A MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT DR. ERIN RATHKE

Summer is in full swing, and it’s been a productive season as we prepare to welcome students back into our schools. One of the most exciting moments ahead is greeting our incoming kindergarten class, the Class of 2038! Welcoming these youngest learners into the ECCS family is a powerful reminder of why we do this work.

REPORT

FINANCIAL UPDATE

At the June 23 school board meeting, based on community feedback, identified financial needs, and the ability to invest in strategic priorities that improve student outcomes, district staff recommended that the school board consider approval of a $742/pupil operating levy on the November 2025 ballot.

This version of the School Report went to print before the July 28 School Board meeting when a vote on the decision was expected to take place. Visit eccs.mn/financialfuture for updated information on the potential November referendum.

EASTERN CARVER COUNTY SCHOOLS CONTINUES TO BE A PLACE THAT CENTERS STUDENTS IN EVERY DECISION WE MAKE. EVEN AS WE NAVIGATE BUDGET REDUCTIONS, OUR COMMITMENT TO CREATING MEANINGFUL OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS HAS NEVER WAVERED. ECCS STANDS APART BECAUSE OF OUR FOCUS ON RELATIONSHIPS, STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING, AND A BELIEF THAT EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO WHAT THEY NEED TO THRIVE.

Earlier this year, the board directed district staff to move forward with a cost containment plan that targeted $5 million in cuts for Fiscal Year (FY) 25-26, $4 million in cuts for FY26-27, and $4 million in cuts in FY27-28. The initial $5 million in cuts were approved in March as part of budget assumptions for the 2025-26 school year. Every single one of these cuts is difficult, and the loss of positions and programs will be felt by the entire district community, especially our students.

Last year brought challenges, but it also gave us so much to celebrate. From student achievements to system-wide progress, we’ve had wins that we’re proud of and lessons that will guide our growth. We remain committed to learning from our experiences and continuously improving in service to our students and families.

Looking ahead, the School Board will be considering next steps to stabilize the district’s financial future, including the potential of a referendum. We’re grateful for a community that values strong schools, because we know that when our schools are strong, our cities are stronger too. Eastern Carver County isn’t just a great place to live — it’s a destination because of the investment our community makes in education.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming our students back soon, energized and ready for a great school year.

In Partnership,

Also presented were early draft strategies for the additional $8 million in cuts necessary in FY26-27 and FY27-28 should no additional revenue be added to the budget. These proposed strategies are not final, and would go through the same engagement process used earlier this year should they be necessary. Without additional funding, these cuts represent significant impacts to our programs and staffing.

If the board has approved the November referendum at the $742 per pupil level, it would bring almost $7 million a year in new revenue to the district. The tax impact on a $500,000 home - the average home value for our district - would be $23 per month.

$200,000 home value $9/month $111/year

$350,000 home value $16/month $194/year

$500,000 home value $23/month $278/year

$700,000 home value $32/month $389/year

$1,000,000 home value $46/month $555/year

STRATEGIC PLAN REPORTING: VISION CARD

The Vision Card is one of Eastern Carver County Schools' accountability tools that track progress on our strategic plan. The Vision Card demonstrates district-wide results and connects each department and school improvement plan to our overall goals. It displays key measures and metrics tied to one of our four strategic directions and shows their progress. In spring 2025, after three years of tracking, we redesigned the Vision Card to include trend data, and expanded information about student achievement, engagement, community partnerships, and finances. We update the Vision Card twice yearly and present it to the School Board in late fall and early summer. It's also available on our district website: eccs.mn/strategicplan

Highlights from the Spring 2025 Vision card included the 4-year high school graduation rate, the percent of high school students participating in school activities, and student rating of the Desired Daily Experience.

High School Graduation in 4 Years

Student Desired Daily Experience

Measured by: Percent of students in agreement on annual survey question: I am seen, heard, valued, trusted and respected for who I am and who I want to be.

THE ECCS DIFFERENCE

Measured by: Percent of high school students who engaged in district-sponsored or student-led activity

Families choose Eastern Carver County Schools for a reason. Maybe it’s the intentionality with which our communities built and supported a district of smaller schools – including two traditional high schools – that allows for more opportunities for students and closer relationships between staff and students. Maybe it’s the layers of support embedded in our schools, with specialists that allow for robust fine arts and music programs and media centers that are more than places to check out books, strengths in our district many of our neighbors don’t enjoy. Whatever it is –the ECCS difference is one we’re proud of.

We are kicking off a new video series highlighting the ECCS difference with community members: Denny Laufenburger and Bob Roepke, Colleen Hebert, Greg Anderson, Conor Johnson, and Elizabeth Martinez and Jonathan Martinez Carretero.

Watch the ECCS Difference video series.

ECCS PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE

Our work as a district is to prepare our students to be successful in a world that does not yet exist. Success has many definitions, and the work of our staff, at every grade, in every building, is to help our learners develop the academic, interpersonal, and life skills necessary to make a positive mark on their communities. They leave us ready not just for college or career, but to lead a fulfilling and impactful life.

Our portrait of a graduate came together thanks to a multitude of voices from our community: parents, business owners, community members, staff, administrators and most importantly, our students. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCES

It was a record-breaking conclusion to the 2024-25 school year for Chanhassen and Chaska studentathletes. In total, three state track titles were won; two in all-time state meet record performances. Chaska junior Joshua Schmidt started the Minnesota State High School League Track and Field Championships June 10 by eclipsing the bar in pole vault with a jump of 16 1/2 feet. His pole vault is the second highest recorded jump in a competition by a Minnesota high school athlete ever and a statemeet record. Joshua’s state title was the first for Chaska High School track and field since 2019.

Chanhassen senior Myles Woods set a state-meet record in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash, a time of 10.46 seconds. Woods would go even faster in the championship finals with a mark of 10.44 for the state championship win.

Myles is the first boys state track and field champion in Chanhassen’s 15-year history. The program’s last individual champion came in 2022 (Isabella Roemer).

On championship day on June 12, Chaska junior Noella Ross became the first Hawks girls state champion since Lauren Stelten in 2006 with a winning 800-meter time of 2:12.92. Noella posted one of the fastest all-time runs in the 800 in Minnesota history in the preliminary race with a time of 2:08.49.

In total, Chaska and Chanhassen had 23 state-qualifying efforts with seven podium all-state finishes

Chaska freshman Justin Greathouse posted a time of 49.75 for fourth place in the 400 meters. He also anchored a fourth-place 4x400 team that featured seniors Aidan McKeever and Caden Silus, and junior Charles Mueller

The Chaska team of Lily Gramith, Rebecca Ross, Sidney Fuhr, and Noella Ross reached the podium in the 4x800 relay in eighth place in a time of 9:41.20.

Chanhassen junior James Kopfmann medaled in three events, placing fifth in the 200 meters (21.82) and sixth in the 100 meters (10.99). He also ran a leg in the impressive 4x100 team of juniors Zadok Dodoo and Coleman Zielinski, and Myles Woods. They placed fourth in 42.49 seconds despite rainy conditions.

Storm sophomore MacKenzie Jensen reached new heights -- by a foot -- in pole vault, eclipsing the bar at 11 1/2 feet to place fifth in the girls competition.

Chanhassen senior Peter Hiebert qualified for the shot put finals, placing ninth with a throw of 50 feet.

RUNNER-UP FINISH AT STATE

Chanhassen boys golf put up two impressive team rounds of golf with scores of 292 and 290 to finish second in Class AAA with a 36-hole score of 582. It is the program’s top team finish in school history.

Chanhassen had players finish with all-state performances in Lucas Arntsen and Andrew Ballou. Both players were under-par in each of the two rounds, placing third and fifth, respectively, with overall scores of 141 and 142.

Brody Pluth went under par in his final round to place in the top-10 with 147 strokes. Cameron Stenzel (153), Zac Roecker (154), and Quinn Reding (161) made up the state team for Chanhassen.
