ROCK STARS

For the ultimate duet, Cathy Waterman’s ring designs are one-of-a-kind BY KRISTINA DECHTER

n a surprise Valentine’s Day trip to San Francisco, Richie Follin, singer and guitarist for the psych-pop group Guards, proposed to his love and keyboard-playing, singer bandmate Kaylie Church. The offering: an exquisite custom engagement ring by Cathy Waterman. Kaylie has known the jeweler ever since playing on her son’s Little League team. (Though she now sports long fingernails and exclusively wears dresses, Kaylie was the only girl on the squad.) “We had never talked about rings seriously. The fact that Richie remembered my mentioning Cathy years prior is a perfect example of the kind of person he is,” Kaylie says with admiration. When Richie approached Waterman—her California-based line touts an endless list of devoted celebrity clients, including the First Lady—he wanted, the designer recalls, “something that felt as important and beautiful as his love for Kaylie.” Waterman also wanted to get to know the groom: “Who is he; how did he grow up; what kind of rings did his mother have?” The result is a rose-cut diamond ensconced by a double leaf design that wraps all the way around to form the prongs, topped with a diamond tiara-like setting. “I would describe it as lyrical,” Waterman says of the musical motif. The tokens were exchanged at El Capitan, the stunning rugged campground on the Gaviota Coast. Kaylie wore a custom gown and electric-blue Céline pumps in what Waterman calls “the most personalized wedding I’ve ever been to—tended to with the charm and authenticity of the bride.” “In Guards We Trust” came out in February; the band is currently on tour.
