founder’s letter

ooking back on my wedding, 15 years ago this summer, I still love every minute of that magical Montecito evening. The ceremony and reception were perfect— orchestrated by the uber-talented Colin Cowie. Even now, friends and family say they remember my wedding with great fondness—that it struck a chord (was it the 20 violinists that serenaded us down the aisle?). And as a bride, that is all you really want…to have guests feel the love on that unique day and to have it shared in your and their collective thoughts as a special moment in time. For me, a complete daddy’s girl, I was lucky to have my father walk me down the aisle. Little did I know, it was the last year that my father would be healthy; the following year, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I feel so blessed to have that memory of him holding my hand as he walked me to the altar, giving me away to the man I love with his blessing and dancing with me at the reception. I am eternally grateful to have my father as witness to my wedding while he was alive. Marrying my best friend was truly the icing on the (Sylvia Weinstock) cake. And this is the point of the whole shebang: to celebrate your union. Making it fabulous and timeless and unforgettable is great as well, but it really comes down to the two of you. To help inspire your “happily ever after,” this issue of C Weddings fits the bill. With a focus on all things chic in nuptials, our editors have presented the best of the Golden State’s modern, romantic style in every element of planning. Check out some of our favorite weddings, with page after page of the most incredible days. And I promise, each reflects a couple’s unique spirit. Once you have found “the one,” cherish that love in the way you see fit. Formal and grand or simple and intimate, as long as the day represents you, your wedding will be a

GREG KALAMAR LIVE EVENT ARTIST

os Angeles-based fine artist Greg Kalamar paints colorful scenes of wedding celebrations in the likeness of a classic Degas or Monet. In addition to select high-profile events, Kalamar only takes on around 25 weddings annually. At each, he sets up an easel and finishes an acrylic on canvas in three to four hours. Couples can discuss size, color scheme and requests with Kalamar beforehand. Or, as a gift unbeknownst to newlyweds, it’s a most cherished surprise. From $3,000; gregkalamar.com.

erious shoppers stake out Des Kohan’s eightyear-old destination boutique for its exclusive designer inventory. For that one special day, they rely on her lesser-known, yet highly sophisticated, head-to-toe custom bridal services. In order to understand her tastes and pair her with the right designer, Kohan, who previously worked in Milan as a trend forecaster for Miu Miu, Prada and Gucci, first sits down with the bride (and her loved ones) at the shop over tea. The store has relationships with some of the world’s finest: Sophia Kokosalaki, Viktor & Rolf, Hussein Chalayan and Juan Carlos Obando, to name a few. Upon making a selection, Kohan’s team arranges a meeting with the designer and the client to review 10-20 runway looks and get feedback. “She tells us what she likes and doesn’t like, from shape, fabric, style, fit, color, beadwork. We sketch options while she is talking and explaining,” says Kohan, who has created more than 130 gowns over the years (including bridesmaid and mother of the bride dresses). After the bride approves a final sketch, the creative team searches for fabrics and techniques to present at the formal design meeting. Kohan continuously takes measurements while the dress is in construction to make sure it fits perfectly. The last one is taken just three days before the wedding. “Depending on how intricate they are, we have designed custom gowns in less than a month and obviously more elaborate gowns in over a year’s time.” Kohan strives to make pieces her clients can wear again. “All our brides have worn their gowns after, to summer garden parties and even one to the Met Ball!” Her services don’t stop there, either. In addition to supplying the bride with day-of styling, correct underpinnings, professional steamers, and shoes (often working with the Azzedine Alaïa atelier) and accessories, Kohan liaises with hair stylists at Mèche Salon and Andy Lecompte (close friends) and advises on makeup decisions (from nail polish to lipsticks and powders). “There are no warnings on the custom gown route—only that you will be pampered and served beyond your expectations,” Kohan explains from Brazil (she has homes in Mandeville Canyon and São Paulo, where her fiancé is from). Recently engaged, she’s starting to think about her own wedding. “Juan Carlos said he would never speak to me again if he didn’t design my dress. So, I will happily be in a JCO original. Probably on a Brazilian beach.” deskohan.com. •

Marriage Material e never thought we’d be working together,” says Diana Perrin, “but we really couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” Two years ago, Diana and Josh Perrin were planning a bohemian black tie wedding at Culver City’s Smog Shoppe and wanted something different: mismatched antique silver flatware. Diana, a food stylist, and Josh, an architectural photographer, began collecting from estate sales and sifting through vintage markets across Southern California. The couple acquired all the flatware they needed, plus a plethora of polished brass vases and one-of-a-kind dishes. “After the wedding, our vendors wanted to know if they could buy our plates and trays, and that’s when we decided to launch Casa de Perrin,” Diana remembers. A westside warehouse now houses 50 curated suites that span from colorful Persian rugs, crystal

coupes, tumblers and goblets to 19th-century china and a rainbow of cake stands. The couple recently commissioned sets of 24-karat gold flatware; to accompany a vintage set of Florentine trays, they had 300 chargers made in Italy. “Not a day goes by that I don’t buy something,” says Diana, who counted more than 40 events on the books in the month of June alone. In addition to full-service table setting, Casa de Perrin also offers custom sourcing for events and decorating/staging of private china cabinets. New this summer, clients can register for or purchase the singular treasures from the site—use for your wedding and take it all home with you at the end of the night. casadeperrin.com casadeperrin.com. •

or Molly Guy, creating Stone Fox Bride was a way of re-envisioning the extravagant wedding industry and making a big day a little more relaxed. The Chicago-born anti-bridezilla (she walked down the aisle at her own wedding barefoot) describes herself as “genetically coded for cold weather with an affinity for California.” Using the Golden State’s late-1970s rock era as her style inspiration, Guy’s N.Y. venue for unfussy brides-to-be provides all the details: custom-made veils, Art Deco jewelry, even organic beauty products. “Every bride that comes into my showroom wants that natural Stevie Nicks or Bridget Bardot look on her wedding day,” says Guy. With that in mind, she sources crowns, headpieces and vintage accessories that speak to a casually chic clientele. In true Stone Fox Bride fashion, Guy hasn’t forgotten about the perennial attendant: her Bridesmaid Survival Kit comes fully equipped with a canvas tote, Judy Blume books and Nag Champa incense (and a few naughty tokens). stonefoxbride.com stonefoxbride.com.

ROCK STARS

For the ultimate duet, Cathy Waterman’s ring designs are one-of-a-kind BY KRISTINA DECHTER

O

n a surprise Valentine’s Day trip to San Francisco, Richie Follin, singer and guitarist for the psych-pop group Guards, proposed to his love and keyboard-playing, singer bandmate Kaylie Church. The offering: an exquisite custom engagement ring by Cathy Waterman. Kaylie has known the jeweler ever since playing on her son’s Little League team. (Though she now sports long fingernails and exclusively wears dresses, Kaylie was the only girl on the squad.) “We had never talked about rings seriously. The fact that Richie remembered my mentioning Cathy years prior is a perfect example of the kind of person he is,” Kaylie says with admiration. When Richie approached Waterman—her California-based line touts an endless list of devoted celebrity clients, including the First Lady—he wanted, the designer recalls, “something that felt as important and beautiful as his love for Kaylie.” Waterman also wanted to get to know the groom: “Who is he; how did he grow up; what kind of rings did his mother have?” The result is a rose-cut diamond ensconced by a double leaf design that wraps all the way around to form the prongs, topped with a diamond tiara-like setting. “I would describe it as lyrical,” Waterman says of the musical motif. The tokens were exchanged at El Capitan, the stunning rugged campground on the Gaviota Coast. Kaylie wore a custom gown and electric-blue Céline pumps in what Waterman calls “the most personalized wedding I’ve ever been to—tended to with the charm and authenticity of the bride.” “In Guards We Trust” came out in February; the band is currently on tour. The bride’s Cathy Waterman recycled platinum and ethically sourced diamond Leafside engagement ring and Half Ribbon wedding band. Love Notes For newlywed Natalie Portman’s

role as Miss Catherine Dior in La Vie en Rose, the actress didn’t have to look far for inspiration BY CAROLINE CAGNEY

PMD has been dubbed the ultimate exfoliator— a hand-held machine dedicated to minimizing fine lines, pores, blemishes and wrinkles. a Vie en Rose, the short Sofia Coppola film shot last October for Miss Dior’s new fragrance campaign, opens with an elegant siren wearing a Christian Dior Haute Couture dress by designer Raf Simons. She is traipsing across L.A. during a weekend rendezvous with her mystery man, splashing about in a fountain with clusters of voluptuous florals—no doubt a nod to the fragrance’s Turkish and Bulgarian rose notes. The film stars Natalie Portman, who teamed up with the celebrated director for a second time. “[Miss Dior] has definitely matured, gained depth and sensuality,” Portman says of her latest portrayal. As has Portman, who returned from her Yifat Oren-designed wedding in Big Sur just two months prior, where, in a sweeping Rodarte dress, she married choreographer Benjamin Millepied. “[Miss Catherine Dior] lives in a world of happiness.” The same may be said of Miss Portman. Glow With It

Skincare expert Gina Marí offers her one-year countdown to getting picture perfect

W

hat do you want to look like on your big day? A full year before your wedding is the ideal period to get aggressive with whatever skincare

concerns you may have. Address any current acne issues, old acne scars, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. Also, don’t forget about your body—décolleté, arms, hands, back, knees. We all want to look amazing from head to toe on our wedding day—and, of course, on the dreamy honeymoon.

1 yearNow is the time to correct any brown and/or red spots, raised bumps and cellulite as well as overall skin-tone and texture. Extractions are recommended for current acne, pore refining and an even skin texture. Microdermabrasion over the entire face, neck, décolleté, elbows, knees, back… basically everywhere. For acne scars and heavily sun-damaged areas, I encourage heavier peels. Continue the treatments weekly for the first six weeks, then spread them out according to your results. These procedures should be followed with Oxygen Therapy to aid in the healing process. At Gina Marí Skincare, we offer LED Light Therapy for the face and body and an amazing LED Infusion Treatment, where we apply patented serums. Formulated to your specific skin type, these aid in collagen and elastin production, pigmentation concerns and the reduction of scars and cellulite. I encourage the LED Light treatments once a week for eight-to-10 weeks and then spreading them out accordingly. Maya Manshel was a vision in her Francesca Miranda gown.

9350 Wilshire Blvd., Ste. 204, Beverly Hills, 310-276-7601; ginamari.com.

and always sunblock to keep the process moving forward.

6 monthsContinue the above procedures. The level of intensity will depend on how quickly you’re seeing results. 3 monthsSelect a makeup artist. Make sure to perform a test to guarantee that your skin does not have any adverse reactions. If you do, there’s plenty of time to identify the problem and fix it!

1 monthNow is the time to switch from aggressive treatments to more gentle ones. Continue

microdermabrasion on the face and body, mild glycolic body washes and the LED Light Therapy. We would recommend one final light facial peel as well. Most important: stay out of the sun! After all the amazing work you’ve been doing, avoid damaging your fresh new look. Drink a lot of water and cut back on caffeine so you won’t have puffy eyes or face on the big day. Avoid using new products that might cause a breakout. Stick to what is safe.

1 weekStart the pampering. Begin microdermabrasion

on the entire face and body, one final LED Infusion Treatment, any last-minute extractions and our favorite: lots of vitamins infused with oxygen. At Gina Marí, we use Vitamins A, C and E along with hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and green tea. This O2 will plump up any fine lines and wrinkles and leave your skin glowing. Not only will increasing water consumption and decreasing caffeine intake help your skin, but it will also help you to be less stressed out!

1 day We call this one a “pretty appoint-

ment.” Use vitamins combined with collagen, a little steam and blast yourself with oxygen. You will be amazingly hydrated and officially have an all-over “bridal glow.” the fact that you look fabulous! •

Accents become instant heirlooms cherished well beyond the big day

GIA CANALI

When Jennifer Parsons, founder of L.A.based design studio Tiny Pine Press, married social media consultant Ben Upham, she brought her Appalachian childhood to L.A.’s Carondelet House. Parsons printed napkins in her studio and dyed them pale blue and gray. Her first grade teacher hand-sewed the runners, which would become a quilt. Family members made coasters with embossed leather and crocheted yarn. Wedding blogger Abby Larson says that brides like Parsons inspired StyleMePrettyLiving.com, her new interiors venture. “People want to bring home a piece of the wedding,” she says, whether it’s a chandelier, vintage cake plates (which Larson collected for hers) or linens. “They’re great reminders of that perfect day,” says Parsons. • WRITTEN AND EDITED BY CHRISTINE LENNON FALL WEDDINGS 2013

In San Francisco, Hudson Grace (415-440-7400; hudsongracesf. com) has quickly become a destination for couples seeking elegant porcelain, an exclusive line of white dinnerware, distinctive flatware and serving pieces, and crisp linen napkins in 21 colors with a modern edge. “We still get people looking for a silver service,” says co-owner Monelle Totah. “It’s just not their mother’s silver.” Totah and her partner, Gary McNatton, lend their expert taste, and compile an e-book of their selections to link to a wedding website.

PURE BLISS

Federico Pratesi, the dashing Florence-based chairman of the Italian fine-linens purveyor and great-grandson of its founder, knows how to make a beautiful bed. To him, the quality of the sheets you sleep on might be as critical as the person you choose to marry. Here, he answers some questions about the marital bed: C: What should a new couple consider? FP: You spend more than one third of your life together between the sheets, among the throws and the cushions. The bed is the heart of life where love, passion and dreams begin. C: Where to start? FP: Invest in a few sets of quality sheets. C: How long should sheets last? FP: It depends on how they’re cared for. Mild detergent helps! Basically from conception to graduation; in other words, a lifetime. 8405 Melrose Pl., L.A., 323-653-2425; pratesi.com.

oday, with dishes as diverse as handmade pastas, gluten-free rolls and edible flower salads, guests keep wondering, “What’s next?” When you have beautiful ingredients, explains Valleybrink Road’s Barrett Prendergast (valleybrinkroad.com), who specializes in dinner parties and showers, family-style simplicity and color is key: Caramelize Brussels sprouts with sherry vinaigrette and rosemary-tarragon breadcrumbs. Serve homemade ricotta and spread it on toasts with kabocha squash and mint. It’s not unusual to forego the multicourse menu altogether in favor of giant rustic boards of cheese and charcuterie. You might find similar offerings at A.O.C. in L.A. (323-246-0978), or pizzas from Madeleine Fitzpatrick and Evan Shively’s elusive mobile oven in Marin County. Says Waters Fine Foods & Catering (waterscatering.com) owner Mary Kay, whose 23-year-old company has long been on par with San Diego culinary trends, “Food stations and hand-delivered tapas plates are requested more than sit-down meals.” FROM LEFT Beet trio stack by Waters, S.D. oraged kumquat-white chocolate pudding with a rose geranium-scented tuile? As far as wedding feasts are concerned, sounds like a dream come true. But naturalists in S.F.’s forests really are hunting down candy-cap mushrooms, sifting the low-tides of mussel-lined shores (and plucking ripe kumquats). Since 2008, Iso Rabins has fueled a city’s hunger for hyper-local ingredients with ForageSF (forage sf.com), encompassing a roving supper club, classroom, kitchen, underground market and Wild Kitchen private events. Wild Kitchen’s options run from seven-to-10 light bites ($45-$55/person)—nettle soup shots, eucalyptus-huckleberryCampari ice—or more substantial pickled deviled eggs with horseradish-spiked crab. Three- or five-course dinners ($55-$80/ person) tantalize with ingenuity: fennel-dusted greens, Wild Bay-brined pork, and charcuterie plates with house-smoked and cured seafood. But the Forage Feast ($90/person) is the most serious progression: hors d’oeuvres, three courses of familystyle platters or plated dishes, and dessert that, if it’s the right season, could well be that elusive candy-cap crème brûlée. Meanwhile, at 51-acre Campovida (campovida.com), a dif-

ferent environmental wedding has taken root. The Mendocino County retreat is a loving restoration of the once-shuttered Fetzer Valley Oaks Food & Wine Center (plus a new East Bay tasting room). Farm-to-banquet-table finds expression with 25year veteran gardener Ken Boek, and chef Adam Weiss, former muralist and sous/pastry chef at Berkeley’s Gather restaurant. As Weiss describes, chic wedding brunches come to fruition “highlighting what I can find in the garden and showing new plants [you] haven’t experienced and didn’t know you could eat.” A recent menu: fresh pennyroyal chèvre pursed in sorrel and fastened with chives; nutty buckwheat gnocchi with the estate’s Viognier; ciccolini of Magruder Ranch wild boar and rhubarb mostarda; gooey cardoon-Gorgonzola gratin; whole wheat brioche alongside robust Campovida honey; and a figleaf panna cotta with sweet-tart mulberries stewed in Zinfandel. Weiss is almost overwhelmed by the lasting memories. “You can remember the honey; how goat and sheep from a hill or two over taste when they’ve been eating spring grass and clover flowers; how the first delicate strawberries taste…to tell the truth, it’s almost too much.” •

Founding forager Iso Rabins cooks with his finds, from elderberries to eel.

Lauren Levine and Alex Kassan celebrated their marriage with a weekend-long fiesta at Rosewood Mayakoba

IT’S IN THE DETAILS

THE DRESS Lauren wore a Monique Lhuillier gown and headpiece from Stone Fox Bride with a detachable veil.

IRA LIPPKE STUDIOS

“I didn’t want a classic white wedding. I wanted it to look like a jungle with lots of greenery and color,” says the bride, who worked with L.A.-based planner Mindy Weiss (as had both of Alex’s siblings).

TRADITION Nearly 200 guests danced the Hora. “We were both kind of freaked out,” says Lauren.

HUSBAND + WIFE “We worked in the same building. Alex saw me and did a little recon work,” says the bride, chief of staff for SLT (a fitness company). Two years later, Alex, who works in financial investments, proposed with an asscher-cut ring from Roxbury Jewelry in L.A. The couple now lives in SoHo.

ALL IN THE FAMILY Lauren poses with her father and father-in-law. Lauren’s family is from N.Y. and Alex’s hails from L.A., so they split the distance. A Riviera Maya wedding accommodated family from both coasts.

RECEPTION Banquet tables, Moroccan and Chinese lanterns, bamboo place settings and lush centerpieces set the scene. “The flowers actually draped down off the tables.” ABOVE The couple’s niece and nephews.

Idyllic Idaho

Nicole Diaco and Michael Burgess leave their sunny SoCal home to exchange vows in the quaint town of Sun Valley

DESSERTS Cristina Ceccatelli of Cristina’s Restaurant and Bakery in Sun Valley prepared three varieties of cheesecake (traditional, chocolate, espresso), the groom’s favorite dessert.

FIRST STEPS “We did the tango to ‘Por una Cabeza’ as a surprise dance that nobody knew about— not even our parents,” says Nicole. They took lessons once a week before Michael departed to work on a film for four months. “We didn’t take another lesson until a couple weeks before the wedding, but it turned out amazing.” The bride wore an Asos dress and Zara shoes for the performance.

WRITTEN BY ALISA WOLFSON. HILLARY MAYBERY PHOTOGRAPHY

THE COUPLE Fashion buyer and stylist Nicole Diaco, in a J. Mendel gown, and director of photography and camera operator Michael Burgess share a magical moment in the backyard of the Burgess family vacation home. “We looked at so many locations, but this one felt personal,” says the bride.

TABLE SETTING “Mike is working on a movie called The Olive Sisters, and we’re Italian, so using olive branches was a way of incorporating our heritage,” says Nicole. COCKTAIL HOUR The bride and bridesmaids look through strips from the photo booth. My Home Furnishings created a sitting area. “We wanted it to feel cozy, like we were in someone’s living room outside.” Dinner and dancing soon commenced inside the tented space on the one-acre property.

THE CEREMONY Parasols were provided during the outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour. The bride and groom’s nephews walking down the aisle.

pon graduation from University of Georgia, Alabama native Beth Murray took a job on Capitol Hill and later became a producer in New York on NBC’s “Today” show. Her college pal, Ben Bricken, chased surf in Hawaii and eventually chose endless summers in Santa Monica, where he joined Douglas Emmett real estate firm. Not until a business trip from N.Y. to L.A. in her mid-twenties did the two reconnect. “We both just knew,” she recalls. “It’s like a switch turned on.” Within a few months, Ben and Beth took a trip to Rosemary Beach, an enclave they’d both visited as children. “He took me out on this magical boardwalk above the beach and proposed right there.” His family was at the shore. After six months and Beth’s cross-country move to Santa Monica, the future Mr. and Mrs. gathered again with their beloveds at Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards. Golden light poured in as the barefoot bride, in a frothy Vera Wang gown, and groom walked a lush pastel “carpet” of gardenias, stock blossoms and garden roses. Ben’s father, pastor Reese Bricken, officiated with Dr. Henry Cloud, and dear friend and bestselling author Donald Miller read an original poem he’d written for the couple. The vineyard was illuminated with votives in memory of Ben’s uncle, while Beth’s bouquet was wrapped with lace from her aunt’s wedding veil. “We wanted the ceremony to be the most

special part. The coolest was looking out...at everyone supporting us.” And though the guest list was 120, it was, in fact, larger; a cousin Skyped Beth’s proud grandparents, who were unable to attend but donned their finest for a viewing party in Birmingham. “The TV producer in me came out,” laughs Beth of the wellorchestrated soiree. Event designers Bash, Please explain the day’s youthful energy and elegance: “Beth wanted a traditional, sophisticated feel for the details, while Ben really wanted a good bourbon cocktail.” Whether the personalized olive oil bottles doubling as escort cards, Brown Paper Design’s vivid arrangements with first-of-the-season peonies flown in from S.F., or Pharmacie’s decadent drinks, the laid-back Southern couple indeed found that balance. All the elements flowed that evening: from the fresh lemonade presented at the driveway; down the path to the hilltop vows overlooking the Santa Monica Mountains; up the stairs for cocktails overlooking the vineyard (and Whoa Nelly! Catering’s fried chicken and waffles); to a poolside family-style dinner; onto the party floor with The Flashdance, and the wee hours, when provisions such as truffled mac and Old Bay fries arrived. Adds Beth, “We had everything: 360-degree panoramas and a stunning space for an intimate destination wedding. The best was that all our guests from the south would be together.” •

ilary Reinis and Arthur Sherman grew up half a mile from each other in Brentwood, but it wasn’t until they attended a friend’s 2009 birthday party that they officially met. “It turned out we had many mutual friends and probably crossed paths in high school,” says Hilary. After a 15-month engagement and no luck finding the perfect venue for their 225-person guest list, the couple stumbled upon Big Daddy’s Antiques on La Cienega Boulevard. “I knew immediately,” recalls Hilary. “Every time Arthur and I walked into the warehouse, we became giddy, and the owner, Shane Brown, was willing to let us be the first people to hold a wedding there.” Not only did Brown give the green light for the celebration, but he also built walls, painted the dance floor and let them redesign the space with the help of Robin Baab and Sarah Tivel of Gather Events. Coming from tightly-knit families, the couple felt strongly about incorporating their brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces, nephews and parents (28 in total) in the wedding party. Hilary’s eldest brother, an artist, designed the chuppah under which she and Arthur exchanged vows. A graphic artist for TOMS, Hilary designed the invitation suites herself, but when it came to the evening’s menu, Arthur stepped in. A manager on the opening team of the new Water Grill in Santa Monica, he was “very involved” in the food selection. Jon Shook of Animal restaurant cooked at the wedding, and the groom’s favorite sandwiches from Bay Cities in Santa Monica appeared as a late-night snack. “We had a bourbon bar and three specialty cocktails that we created with the bar director at Animal,” adds Hilary. Before departing for their Park City honeymoon, the newlyweds spent their first night as husband and wife at the Hotel Bel-Air. • Venue Big Daddy’s Antiques cake Sweet Lady Jane menu Animal Catering dress Lanvin florist JL Designs rings Neil Lane Jewelry entertainment The Flashdance, West Coast Music planner Gather Events rentals Classic Party Rentals, Found Vintage Rentals, Big Daddy’s Antiques stationery Hilary Reinis, Copper Willow Paper Studio videography Nicholas Andrew Films honeymoon Park City

or Alyson Weaver and Evan Nicholas, New Year’s Eve is now also their wedding anniversary. “New Year’s had always been anti-climactic for me, so this was my way of making it memorable,” says Alyson. The bride and groom met at USC, where she acted in and he directed a mutual friend’s play. They didn’t start dating, however, until years after graduation. Aside from geographic desirability (they lived three blocks apart in Santa Monica), Alyson explains, “We both had the Hollywood thing in common.” She’s a writer and producer; he’s a screenwriter. Their few years of courtship included two dates to the Los Angeles Theatre, where they took in classic films King Kong and Paper Moon. At Montecito’s starry hideaway San Ysidro Ranch, Evan proposed on Alyson’s birthday. “An hour after our engagement, we had the whole wedding planned in our minds,” she says. As a couple who loves drama (and supports the Los Angeles Conservancy), the two recalled their dates at the Los Angeles Theatre. “It has a history that isn’t as obvious as other places—it’s so authentic, down to the smell,” adds Alyson. Following an admittedly long ceremony at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, nearly 200 guests were shuttled to the iconic venue. Veteran planner Mindy Weiss and her team had transformed the stage and orchestra area into a magical ballroom. In true New Year’s Eve fashion, noisemakers and hats were distributed before gold, silver and clear balloons were released at the stroke of midnight. The bride boasts, “I insisted on having an exit! I changed into a Monique Lhuillier cupcake dress, and we left for Casa del Mar in a 1930s Packard.” •

Lauren Gores and Jake Ireland celebrate their long-awaited someday at a grand estate in Beverly Park BY KELSEY McKINNON PHOTOGRAPHED BY SIMONE & MARTIN PHOTOGRAPHY

hen I would be heartbroken from missing him, he would always reassure me that we’d have our someday,” says Lauren Gores of her now-husband Jake Ireland. With an unbreakable bond, the young couple endured four years of long distance after graduating from Indiana University—Lauren moved to Missouri to pursue a career as a news anchor, while Jake landed in Phoenix to get a doctorate in physical therapy. On one of his many trips to Missouri, Jake proposed with a custom Neil Lane sparkler and their “someday” quickly began to take shape. Lauren took a job at Newsy and moved back to L.A. She and event planner Mindy Weiss started arrangements for a wedding at the Beverly Park estate of her father, Chariman of Gores Group, Alec Gores—the same setting and weekend her sister and maid of honor Rochelle chose four years prior. Of her father’s many business holdings, one of them is design house J. Mendel. The bride-to-be and her mother (who lives in Michigan) flew to New York five times over the course of the year for fittings with designer Gilles Mendel, who outfitted her with three exquisite white custom gowns (ceremony, reception and a dress for a family-only church service the following week). As Lauren stepped onto the wood-plank aisle, her father kept whispering, “slow down!” Overlooking the sprawling canyon, there certainly was a lot to take in: Jake stood under a magnificent 20-foot altar swept in white garden roses. Before exchanging vows, Jason Paige and Lucy Woodward performed a song Lauren had written for Jake called “Our Someday.” Following an emotional ceremony, 418 guests (a who’s who in social and fashion circles) walked down a manicured pathway, stopping for Nobu sushi and champagne, before entering the formal mega-tent that was erected on the neighboring lot. Sculptural floral centerpieces soared above courses of filet mignon and porcini-crusted halibut by Wolfgang Puck. During the reception, a father/daughter song was performed by son of Willie, Lukas Nelson (“We were all waterworks,” the bride remembers). Lauren’s father then surprised her with a set from Colbie Caillet. Around midnight, it was a shock to all when the back tent wall magically rose to reveal a second structure where the party continued. “Jake and I were the last ones there. We waited until every last person left and then went to the Hotel Bel-Air at 5:30 in the morning.” Guests met the couple at the hotel for brunch the following day. “No one was talking about how nice my dad’s house was or how nice the linens were. They all talked about how much love they felt, and I think that was the biggest compliment to Jake and myself. We felt it, too.” •

THAT’S AMORE MIA SEBASTIANI AND KENDRICK COAKLEY TOAST A NEW LIFE TOGETHER AT HER FAMILY’S PICTURESQUE SONOMA VILLA BY KELSEY McKINNON PHOTOGRAPHED BY MEG SMITH

ia Sebastiani may not have imagined her wedding as a teenager, but she knew she wanted to be with Kendrick Coakley. At JustinSiena High School in Napa, she asked him to a school dance, and during a summer home from college, she reached out to him on MySpace. “I know, not the most romantic,” she says, but it did the trick. After the couple graduated, they travelled the world—a two-month road trip around the U.S. and then a move to South Africa to work at Glen Carlou Wine Estate. Upon returning to Sonoma, Mia started the specialty foods business Mia’s Kitchen while Kendrick continued his career as a vintner (he’s now with Highway 12). They were home from brunch and playing tag with the dogs when Kendrick made a simple, unexpected—yet much wanted—proposal. Six months later, they exchanged vows in front of immediate family in a traditional Catholic ceremony at St. Francis Solano chapel in Sonoma, an edifice her grandfather helped build in 1945. The couple jetted to and from the ceremony on Kendrick’s wedding gift to Mia: a bright red Vespa. That weekend, 300 guests joined them at Mia’s parents’ villa overlooking Sebastiani Winery for a weekend of Italian hospitality. Guests could play bocce, take a cooking class at Ramekins or drive race cars at Sears Point. For the reception on the patio, “The most important thing was the food,” says Mia, who called on Tyler Florence and Paula LeDuc to pair burrata and caviar with Farmer’s Market 2010 Sauvignon Blanc (a Sebastiani wine company), beet carpaccio with Mia’s Playground 2006 Pinot Noir, Italian lamb pie with 2010 Treefort Cabernet (made by Kendrick) and Glen Carlou Chenin Blanc for dessert. After dinner and dancing, the couple cut a towering six-tier cake inside the marble foyer. The party continued in the wine cave. “The next day was the saddest day. I cried so many tears because I tried to keep it together for everyone on the wedding day, and was just overwhelmed with love.” A brunch at Sonoma Golf Club preceded swimming back at the house, an afternoon that rolled right into the family’s weekly Sunday dinner of—what else— pasta cotechino and wine. • VENUE Private estate CAKE Perfect Endings MENU Paula LeDuc Fine Catering, Tyler Florence DRESS Amsale FLORIST Kathleen Deery Design ENTERTAINMENT Golden Gate Strings, DJ David Rokeach PLANNER Laurie Arons Special Events RENTALS Classic Party Rentals STATIONERY A Day in May HONEYMOON Fiji

hen future anesthesiologist Erin Kutay sat down next to future radiologist Neal Bost at Tulane Medical School orientation, she had no idea she was going to marry the Texan boy with the “great southern manners.” The two struck up a conversation, became friends and, six months later, began their courtship. A visit from New Orleans to NorCal turned into a proposal when Neal outfitted out a cottage at The Carneros Inn in Napa Valley with roses. “I asked him to propose again, so I could remember,” she says. The day was so special that Erin wanted to get married exactly 365 days later—but they settled for 366. The Pittsburgh-born Palo Altan had long known a place she loved. A middle school field trip to the Legion of Honor in San Francisco still remained clear in her memory. “I was so inspired back then by the architecture of the building and the artwork,” Erin recalls. On their special day, cloaked in fog on the lawn in front of the museum, Neal’s older sister officiated the nontraditional ceremony. Erin promised, among other things, to regularly make her husband barbecued chicken sandwiches. After the kiss, the couple’s 120 guests departed for the interior of the museum, where a seated Mediterranean-Asian themed feast from Paula LeDuc followed, and dancing to the Chuck Wansley band. endall Kerrigan and Hagen Gilbert met through mutual DJ friends inside The Roosevelt’s Tropicana Bar where Hagen, a graphics supervisor at visual effects company Mind Over Eye, was celebrating his birthday. “From then on, it was just all starry-eyed for me,” says Kendall, who was born in Chicago but grew up in L.A. The next evening, they had their first date at now-closed Beechwood in Venice. Kendall initially envisioned a European wedding. “As a young girl, I had always wanted to get married in Tuscany. Something about that region captured my heart—the green gables and old, darling villas. But it was very far away, and with all the family we wanted to attend, it just didn’t work.” Her father suggested Ojai for its Mediterranean feel. Kendall says she and Hagen,

raised in Crookston, Minnesota, loved its vast vistas and flowering lavender. The couple’s 14-month engagement culminated in a walk down the aisle to Cat Power’s “I Found A Reason” (Sigur Rós’s “Sæglapór” accompanied the bridesmaids and the couple’s infant daughter, Sterling, who was pushed by the groom’s sister Alyson in a vintage pram). Hagen selected “Can I Keep You” by Phillip Roebuck for the couple’s first dance, and, after dinner, attendees found a powder-pink pâtisserie and an equally lavish charcuterie and fromagerie spread—conjured by event planner Merryl Brown—for sugary and savory snacks. “I have a sweet tooth,” Kendall admits. “Hagen blames me for his candy addiction.” The band, Jump Start learned The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition” for the celebration, and guests departed with a CD containing the evening’s playlist. •

enet Ricketts’ now-husband proposed two times. The first was an impromptu declaration. The other was at home, then in Hancock Park, when Chris Grant was a little more prepared. He told her, “I have two things for you. One that you’re expecting, and one that you’re not.” In one hand was a 4-carat emerald-cut ring with trapezoid baguettes; in the other, a love letter that she couldn’t wait to open. With the bride’s Montana roots and the groom’s swank New York City style in mind, the former PR gal (now food blogger) and the CEO of the multimedia company Electus settled on The Carneros Inn for their fantasy wedding in Napa Valley. Dressed in a slinky lace Monique Lhuillier dress, Jenet joined her fiancé, in Tom Ford, under the chuppah while a string quartet played the “The Ludlows” (a sweeping theme from Legends of the Fall). Down the aisle walked her flower girls, bedecked in hues of gray, and the couple’s two dogs, a Golden retriever and a Cavachon. After the ceremony, the 60 guests headed to the Hilltop Dining Room and outdoor area for Montanans (a take on the Whiskey Sour) and New Yorkers (Manhattans). The evening’s sit-down menu focused on a crab amuse-bouche, butter lettuce salad and roasted rack of lamb, and jazzy music by the Leftover Cuties gave way to Chris Huvane’s iPod. The magical night ended with the couple’s crew of tight-knit friends retiring to a house on the property, where they feasted on In-N-Out. Jenet wanted to remember the moment the old-fashioned way. She bought a vintage mail-sorting cabinet and asked guests to pen letters instead of signing a book. “I could never pinpoint an exact phrase that Chris said that swept me off my feet. It’s in my heart.” •

J. Paul Getty, Sr. and Theodora Getty Gaston, 1951 Theodora Getty Gaston (or “Teddy”) was a torch singer at a nightclub in New York when she first spotted J. Paul Getty, Sr. He was twice her age and had already been married four times, and—despite her mother’s cautioning—they fell madly in love. This year, Teddy turns 100 and releases an autobiography of her storied relationship with California’s oil tycoon: Alone Together: My Life with J. Paul Getty (Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins, $27). Their whirlwind courtship in the Big Apple, a Roman elopement followed by her imprisonment in Italy, a big move back to the Getty Ranch in Malibu (next to where the Getty Villa now stands) and dozens of love letters exchanged across the Atlantic is the stuff of legend. “He loved me, that was for sure. I loved him, too, and gave myself to him completely, with no regrets.”
