CBYRA Annapolis Race Week

4 Annapolis Race Week 2011

Monday September 5, 2011

Kristen Berry, who is part of the Ragin’ crew and also serves as director of the Downtown Sailing Center in Baltimore, loves the fact CBYRA has set up Race Week headquarters at City Dock and invited the general public to participate. “I think it’s the coolest thing going. We were coming into the dock, and I looked onshore and saw hundreds of non-sailors at the party,” Berry said. “That means hundreds of people are getting introduced to sailboat racing and learning what it’s all about. Hopefully, some of those folks will want to get out on the water themselves some day.” Velocity, another J/111 being skippered by Ken Comerford, will be difficult to catch in A1. North Sails professional Jeff Todd is calling tactics on Velocity, which has posted four bullets and placed second in the other two races in building a nine-point lead. “It’s been real fun to see these two J/111s out there doing battle,” Comerford said. “It’s a fast boat, and we’re sailing her really hard.” PHRF A2 is largest of the regatta with 21 boats, and Monkey Dust has built a comfortable 12-point lead on the competition. The Carroll Marine 33, owned by Craig and Dotty Saunders, has won two races and finished no worse than sixth in totaling a low score of 19 points. Elsewhere on Fleet 1, Peter Scheidt and his family-based crew on Maggie maintained their lead in J/35 class by winning two of three races on Sunday. Maggie has finished first or second in five of six starts and leads Medicine Man (Charles Kohlerman) by six points entering the final day of racing. Tenacious (J/105), Bebop (J/30), and Angry Chameleon have all sailed impressively in building solid leads on Fleet 2. Brothers Carl and Scott

Gitchell have sailed Tenacious to three bullets and a pair of seconds in the 15-boat J/105 class and have a six-point advantage over Inigo (Jim Konigsberg). “We’ve had great crew work, and Carl is really in the groove in terms of driving the boat,” said Scott Gitchell, who calls tactics. “It’s a real competitive fleet as usual with real close mark roundings. The key is finding clean air and clear lanes.”

Brothers-in-law Bob Rutsch and Mike Costello, who are seeking to capture first place in the J/30 class for the fourth time in five years, have hung up five bullets and totaled just eight points – half the amount of second place USA 90 (David McConaughy). Meanwhile, the husband-wife combination of Brian and Kristen Robinson has finished no worse than third in taking an eight-point lead in the J/80 class, which has drawn 14 boats.

One of the top performing boats on Fleet 3 has been Upchuck, which leads the Cal 25 class by nine points. Skipper Jimmy Praley has steered the boat to four bullets and credited the crew for that. Fred Wagner is calling tactics for Praley, whose father (Jim Sr.) is trimming the main and uncle (Mike Praley) is working the pit. Holger Hinch (main) and Aaron Galvin complete the crew. “We put together the A team for this regatta, so our boat-handling has been fantastic,” said Jimmy Praley, adding that Upchuck wanted to gain redemption

for a disappointing third place finish in the Annapolis National Offshore One-Design (NOOD) Series. “We’ve had two phenomenal days on the water. I think tomorrow we’re going to stay conservative and not get too greedy with the lead that we have.” Tom Walsh and John Potvin are on pace to capture first in the Catalina 27 class at Annapolis Race Week for the seventh time. The defending champs have won four races and finished second in two others in totaling eight points. PHRF N is sailing a distance course around government marks, and Marino Dimarzo

skippered Nembo to third on Sunday to maintain the overall lead after winning Saturday’s race. Sailing instructions call for no more than eight races, and Frey figures the race committees will have no problem completing the final two starts on Monday, as the forecast calls for 15-20 knot winds. “It’s supposed to really blow tomorrow,” Frey said. A good time was had by all at Sunday’s post-race party and awards ceremony with sailors and non-sailors dancing to the reggae sounds of longtime Annapolis favorite Mama Jama.

IT’S TIME FOR ALL OF US TO TURN OVER A NEW ONE.

IT’S TIME FOR A POWERFUL, NEW ANTIFOULING THAT IS TRULY CLEAN, GREEN AND COPPER-FREE. Turning over a new leaf has never been easier, or more satisfying. With Pettit’s Ultima ECO, boaters can indulge their environmentally friendly side while still enjoying the benefits of aggressive, multi-season protection against fouling and slime. With 50% more biocide than its closest competitor, Ultima ECO is the only multi-season bottom paint to offer a true alternative to copper. Unbeatable protection. A smaller environmental footprint. Isn’t it time you turned over a new leaf?
