The pandemic has brought everyone challenges that no one can imagine making things look gloomy. Despite this, Centro de Cultura carries on to provide light to the community. Like the flower described in the poem of Emerson, the school brings beauty and joy in this dreadful time.

As the health crisis in the country continues, we hear countless narratives of melancholy, devastation, and utter sadness. CDC rewrites these stories by being a catalyst of hope through academic excellence. With the cooperation of the administration, faculty and staff, learners, and parents and guardians, the school is able to fuel the dimming optimism of people belonging not just in the school community but also to the Filipino community in general.

This issue features the efforts done to improve the teaching and learning process. It also contains remarkable outputs of students, proving that there is beauty amidst this crisis.

CDC continues to be a trailblazer of hope and excellence as it commits to creating a new normal that is fair, joyous, and kind. Like the Rhodora, the school blooms to be of service to all in the bagong anyo ng buhay. This is CDC in banyuhay.

CDC CONTINUES TO CHAMPION EXCELLENCE TEACHERS CRAFT CURRICULUM MAPS FOR S.Y. ‘21-‘22

SCHOOL OPENS ENROLMENT; TEACHERS UNDERGO ONLINE TRAINING

As it aims to provide a better learning experience for the students, CDC teachers prepared curriculum maps from June 14 to July 16. This totals to almost a month of crafting curriculum maps, lessons, and other teaching materials.

Committed to providing quality education to Filipino learners, the school opened its early enrolment for the school year 2021-2022 last December 2020.

The curriculum maps made are projected to serve as teaching and learning guides for three years. They will also be revisited to be further enhanced to cope with the changing educational landscape.

The maps are based on the mandated competencies by the Department of Education (DepEd) as presented in the subject curriculum guides and K-12 Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCS) The preparation of curriculum maps is in line with the school’s improvement plan.

It has become a tradition of the school to have early enrolment and give an extra discount to clients willing to entrust their children's academic journey to CDC. As a result of the early enrolment and the ongoing one, a lot of students have already secured their academic year with CDC including several transferees from various public schools.

As the school’s population grows, teachers spent time training to use the learning management system called Aralinks last July 14. Collaboration of teaching techniques and strategies are also done every week.

CDC’s school year 2021-2022 is set to start on the 17th of August.

ADMIN IMPROVES SCHOOL’S FACILITIES True to its mission and vision, the school's administration went full blast in improving the school's facilities while the students are learning in the comfort of their homes. Materials and utilities necessary for students' learning are being readied so they can address the needs of the learners once the government allows face-to-face classes.

Tables were repaired, scraped, and repainted. To further address the need of the current health situation, table covers enough to protect the learners are already being installed. Teachers' tables are also being refurbished.

To provide a better experience to its clients, the school also put air-purifying plants along the hallway.

CDC HOLDS ITS FIRST DRIVE-THRU GRADUATION CEREMONY Despite the pandemic, the whole Centro De Cultura family rejoiced in this year's firstever Drive-thru Graduation ceremony held at Sillawit, Cauayan City, Isabela last June 26, 2021, with the permission of Cauayan City the Local Government Unit.

The program started with the welcome remarks of Teacher Melodie Sandra M. Magday where she reminded the graduates to always pursue excellence and to always have the drive to improve. Then Sir Romulo Condat presented and confirmed the class of 2021 as graduates.

The graduates together with their proud parents and guardians received meritorious awards for their exemplary performances during their stay in CDC. Throughout the ceremony, parents, guardians, students, and the school's faculty and staff followed all the health protocols mandated by the COVID-19 Inter-Agency Task Force.

The Cauayan City’s Public Order and Safety Division (POSD) also assisted the ceremony.

It may not be visible on their faces but you can see the happiness in their eyes as they successfully finish another chapter of their life and they can continue soaring higher with confidence and determination as they begin to trek a new adventure of their life.

Our brain has the capacity to store memories, retain information, and distinguish reality from fantasy. According to Spears (2019), our memory is located in the temporal lobe part of the brain which is responsible for the longterm memories, activities, and facts or information. This region of the brain is also what recognizes familiarity. In some instances, a person may feel when something happened that it has already happened before or may recognize familiarity in a place where he or she had not been before. This mysterious phenomenon produces an unsettling feeling to the person experiencing it because they know that they have not experienced that moment before, but their brain is telling them otherwise. It makes them feel that they have already experienced a situation before even if they have not. In other situations, one can predict what will happen next in certain circumstances which makes them feel that it has already happened before. These experiences such as recalling a memory that has not yet happened or predicting what will happen next as if it has happened before can only lead to one particular phenomenon which is Déjà vu.

Background As defined by the New World Encyclopedia (n.d.), déjà vu is a French word meaning “already seen” and it is also called paramnesia which came from the Greek words “para” which means “near” and “mnēmē” which means “memory.” According to Wlassoff (2016), deja vu is the strong feeling of recollection or sensation of having experienced an incident in the past, but it is actually happening for the first time. It is characterized by a compelling sense of familiarity and a feeling of eeriness or strangeness. Emile Boirac, a French psychic researcher, first used the term Déjà vu in his book Revue Philosophique in 1876. The first recorded deja vu-like experience was in 400 A.D. and it was referred to Saint Augustine who described it as “falsae memoriae.” Wlassoff (2016) also stated that déjà vu was recognized by the scientific community 20 years later when F.L. Arnaud, a French neurologist, presented a déjà vu case in a scientific meeting in 1896 and proposed to use the term. He told the story of Louis, a 34-year-old man who developed amnesia after contracting cerebral malaria. Louis was said to have a vague sense of familiarity with everything he experienced after recovering from his illness, including incidents that were obviously unusual and had never happened before. According to Wilson (2020), this phenomenon is presumed to be very common with 60 to 80 percent of the population experiencing it.

According to Arthur Funkhouser, there are three main types of déjà vu: déjà vécu which is "already lived,” déjà senti which is "already felt,” and déjà visité which means "already visited" (New World Encyclopedia, n.d.). It was mentioned in the study of Berrios (1995) that in the late 1800s, medical opinion appeared to accept that déjà vu was only a memory condition or disorder, but it consequently became a “symptom without a psychological function.”

This notion is further reinforced by Baliga (2018) when he said that déjà vu can happen to anyone with or without any mental disorder. He also stated the two types of déjà vu in his article which are pathological, which is often linked with a neurological disorder of the brain such as epilepsy, and nonpathological, which is a sign of a stable individual with normal psychological symptoms.

Causes of Déjà vu.

rienced déjà vu, researchers can learn more about this phenomenon and its causes. Baliga (2018) enumerated and defined the possible causes of déjà vu; one of which is due to the seizures that occur in the temporal lobe areas of the brain and this medical disorder is called Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE). The brain cells are affected by the repetitive signals caused by the seizures which result in being unable to recall the memory. When the temporal lobe of the brain generates a sense of familiarity that is denied by the other parts of the brain due to insufficient and unclear evidence of a previous event, deja vu may occur for a few seconds. The symptoms of TLE are abnormal sensations, deja vu, and hallucinations.

Chapel & Thorpe (2018) discovered that a person with TLE is most likely to report experiencing deja vu just before having seizures.

The next possible cause stated by Baliga (2018) is because of a person’s memory, specifically the medial temporal lobe which is responsible for long-term memories. Since most people do not remember all the things that happened in a day, they may experience deja vu when confronted by the familiar environment or situation. When faced with something similar in the present, the memory or the experience that happened before is reprocessed which results in a feeling of familiarity or deja vu.

Wilson (2020) has the same perception about this idea because she also stated that many experts say that déjà vu is somewhat related to how a person process and interpret memories.

Baliga (2018) also believed that deja vu may occur due to the delay of neural transmission. This happens when the transferring of information from one part of the brain to another part got delayed for a split-second. For instance, if one part of the brain sends signals to another part of the brain, the information will travel twice to the destination region due to a delay in the transfer. This gives the impression that something has happened before or that an event has already occurred.

The other possible causes are identified by Chapel & Thorpe (2018) such as familiarity and

stress. They stated that a person may be more familiar than they think they are with the situation which leads to déjà vu. Déjà vu likely happens when the rhinal cortices are stimulated by familiarity but the hippocampus, which helps a person remember more concrete memory information, is not enabled. Another factor that leads to déjà vu is stress. The more stressed people are, the more they report experiencing deja vu. It may be because the brain is more likely to 'glitch' and have trouble aligning and synchronizing memory with reality when a person under a great deal of stress or is processing much information at once.

Theories about Déjà vu Although the term déjà vu was invented a century ago, there is still not much study about it so researchers were only able to make theories about the phenomenon. One of the theories that Baliga (2018) stated in his article is the Hologram Theory. It assumes that déjà vu occurs when people enter a new environment and has the same smell or sound that matches with the previous events. The human brain simultaneously links to the prior encounters and creates a hologram of the memory, creating an impression that the person is reliving the same situation.

The person tries to recall the memory at this time, but he or she is unable to do so because the stimuli that triggered the hologram are concealed from conscious perception.

The next theory about déjà vu by Baliga (2018) is the Dual Processing Theory. From the start to the end of the day, a person experiences a lot of activities and situations. ART CRITIC BY BJORN CADIENTE, 12-YAKAN Rehimen, Elmer Borlongan’s callout to the dark regimes in Philippine Politics, took him to greater heights: fame, recognition, and respect in the contemporary painting scene.

As an oil on canvas painting that sprouted from the hope to gain more resources, Rehimen was rendered Borlongan’s entry in the 1988 Metrobank Annual Painting Competiton. Simply said, he created it to receive the clout to progress as a modern-day artist—one that needs resources such as money and recognition. Surprisingly to him, Rehimen won second prize, which gained him the necessary steps to move forward.

Rehimen stood out as protest art that recognizes the challenge of a democratic country wrought by a dangerous crony system. Borlongan took inspiration from the then Marlboro seal, a seat of power guarded by two lions on the side. At the time, the socially aware Elmer created the work as a depiction of the system of an emperor, protected by his pack of dogs. The worn out, gaunt figure below the pack of dogs, according to him, represented the marginalized Filipinos.

This work of art protrudes itself significant in the history and culture of the Philippines, given that the democratic system is—even at present—run by a ruler protected by his loyal, power-hungry cronies. It serves as a reminder to the Filipino population to protect the Philippine heritage by bringing down the oppressive pyramid that extinguishes the democratic essence of the country. In that sense, it promotes the preservation of Philippine heritage, and the integrity of the country as a democratic country.

Rehimen strikes me as an artwork that reminds me to always fight the good fight, which begins with mere awareness of the status quo. Moreover, it serves as a reality check on what we have right now—an oppressive system that takes advantage of the weak and marginalized. It wakes me up from my reality—that is, a life of privilege.

ART CRITIC BY ARIANNE UY, 12-YAKAN There is little information about this artwork by Sola Trexia. Perhaps, she wanted the audience to be the one to interpret this masterpiece. All is there to find is its title WhyIDon’tLookLikeMe?.

Despite its lacking information, this piece is very relatable to all, if not most, humans all over the world. For we are expected to act according to the societal norms and standards, we tend to neglect how we really want to feel and act and once we have realized it, then the succeeding question is “why I don’t look like me?”. This is prominent in the Philippines where certain brackets are expected to act the way the society has structured.

Once a person is perceived as different, he/she may experience continuous bully, judgement, or even harassment from co-Filipinos, especially in social media. Therefore, we have this culture of unconsciously being controlled by our surroundings that when we are alone, we can only question why we don’t “look” like our true selves.

This piece for me is so simple yet powerful. It has little information, but the art itself gives its ownmessage regardless if the artist put one or not. Through this piece, I was able to realize that “ahh, she’s right”. I have a look on me that none of the other people have seen and it’s because of the fear that people may not accept how I actually “look” like.

We will all always have a fake persona that we show to others; perhaps, our devil that we deliberately hide in the face of an angel. And faking this persona sometime can be tiring.

This artwork makes me want to be truer to myself even in front of others. How I actually get mad; how I actually perceive; how I actually am vulnerable; and etc. And as I practice that, I hope someday I would be able to confidently say that how you see me is how I really look like.

JUAN RODRIGO BIGORNIA, GRADE 10-TAUSUG When I was a kid, I used to copy images or cartoons, and draw them on my sketch pad. One time, my cousins and I were asking questions about what we want to be in the future. Being the youngest among the group, I had no idea, so I asked my mother what career suits me. She said that since I have skills in drawing, being an architect suits me the most—she’s right. To be an architect someday is a dream of mine since then. Currently, I’m into designing houses and buildings. Today, I want to take Architecture because I want to design buildings that would make life easier. I want to create infrastructures that would be disaster-proof and would reflect the Philippines' culture and arts.

I considered STEM under Academic Track as my strand since it could further develop my skills and abilities as preparation for my Architecture Major. This includes enhancing my communicative skills, knowing contemporary arts, learning basic mathematics for my chosen career, and more. In other words, I considered them as my track and strand as it is closest to the career I will take. I considered Architecture as my career, for it has been my passion since childhood, and being mature-minded, I want to contribute to society, to spread our culture through arts, and at the same time, to render eco-friendly designs. With my chosen career, I can make it possible through my strengths. These are thinking creatively and resourcefully, being a problem-solver, stepping up to be a leader, being a good team player, having persistence and determination, and being open-minded.
