SPEAKER

SPEAKER

Mr Tan Cher Chong

Prior to joining the Academy of Singapore Teachers as the Master Teacher for Educational Support, Cher Chong was a Head of Department at Spectra Secondary School, NorthLight School and Damai Secondary School. His work mainly revolved around pastoral care and student development. As Master Teacher, Cher Chong supports teachers who are working with struggling students to connect them back to a safe and supportive school community, as well as provide the appropriate intervention to build up their internal assets and external resources so that they can overcome their challenges and return to healthy development. He also works with various networked learning communities to raise the professional competencies of teachers and promote teacherleadership among them. Cher Chong is a volunteer tutor at the Tanah Merah Prison. The inmates have taught him that education is always kinder, cheaper and more lasting than rehabilitation. He is also a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) for Big Love Child Protection Specialist Centre. The involvement in MDT helps him to learn about the approach and management of moderate-risk child abuse and neglect cases, and how he can better support students and families in need.

SYNOPSIS Ethics of Care (EoC) is adopted in MENDAKI Tuition Scheme (MTS) classes, which aims to ensure all MTS tutors care for their students’ happiness, well-being, and life beyond the classroom. This will enable them to create a positive atmosphere in the classroom that enhances tutors’ relationship with students and makes them feel important. The speaker will share ways to make students feel motivated to attend lessons, thus increasing the attendance rate and hopefully, producing better results in their pre-, mid-year and post-tests.

Pastoral Care – The H.E.A.R.T (Holistic Education and Resilience building Techniques) for students

Mr Ravindran s/o Rajasekaran

SYNOPSIS Besides meeting the students’ academic needs, how do we include care for their emotional and social well-being within the lesson time? A well-structured pastoral support would be a game-changer for many students and would in turn influence better engagement in class. Applying H.E.A.R.T to lessons aims to ensure students feel positive, supported and looked after. Through this session participants would get insights into how tutors can put together simple activities for self-awareness, social awareness and relationship management skills, which could be easily embedded into your daily lessons. Session would address root concerns such as mental wellbeing, motivation and resilience and help students to achieve their maximum potential.
