SPRINGS OF HOPE At the time of writing this article, I’ve been within the Catholic Community of Waukesha for just under a week. One of the first tasks when being new is to try and learn names. In my first week, I would have to say unofficially, that the name that seems to be the most common is…. Mary. Or, one of the different variants of the name, Maria, Mary Alice, Mary Anne, Mary Jane, Mary Jo. This is one of the signs that we are Catholic! We love the name Mary because it connects us to our Blessed Mother Mary, who connects us to Jesus.

On Saturday, August 15th we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into heaven. This day celebrates the reality that Mary was assumed into heaven body and soul. In the Holy Land there’s the Church of the Dormition of Mary, which commemorates the spot where Mary was taken up into heaven. Within the church there’s a particular unique painting of Jesus carrying Mary to heaven. It’s a startling painting because we’re used to the reverse of the picture, Mary holding baby Jesus.

Mary’s journey body and soul into heaven is meant to be a foreshadowing of the resurrection of our bodies. Unlike Mary’s Assumption, when we die, our immortal soul goes to the Lord while our bodies stay here on earth waiting for Christ’s second coming.

In the meantime, contemplating the Assumption of Mary, especially in decade dedicated to it in the Rosary, usually brings with it two powerful graces. First, it is a mystery that is meant to bring healing to our bodies since it anticipates the heavenly reality where our bodies no longer experience illness and pain. Lift up those who are in need of healing in this mystery! Secondly, meditating on this mystery, unlocks the fruit of a happy death. We pray for all those close to death that their soul might be accompanied by Jesus to our Father in heaven in the same way Jesus lead Mary to heaven.

En esta, mi primera semana, tendría que decir extraoficialmente que al parecer el nombre más común es…. María. O bien, una de las diferentes variantes del nombre: Maria, Mary Alice, Mary Anne, Mary Jane, Mary Jo. ¡Este es uno de los signos de que somos católicos! Amamos el nombre María porque nos conecta con nuestra Santísima Madre María, quien nos conecta con Jesús.

El sábado 15 de agosto celebramos la Solemnidad de la Asunción de María al cielo. Este día celebramos la entrada de María al cielo en cuerpo y alma. En Tierra Santa se encuentra la Iglesia de la Dormición de María, que conmemora el lugar donde María fue llevada al cielo. Dentro de la iglesia hay una pintura única de Jesús elevando a María al cielo. Es una pintura sorprendente porque estamos acostumbrados a una imagen diferente, por lo general vemos a María sosteniendo al niño Jesús.

El viaje de María en cuerpo y alma al cielo es un anuncio de la resurrección de nuestros cuerpos. A diferencia de la Asunción de María, cuando nosotros morimos, nuestra alma inmortal va al Señor mientras nuestros cuerpos permanecen aquí en la tierra esperando la segunda venida de Cristo.

Mientras tanto, contemplar la Asunción de María, especialmente dentro del Misterio dedicado a ella en el Rosario, trae consigo dos poderosas gracias. Primero, es un Misterio que tiene la intención de traer curación a nuestros cuerpos, ya que anticipa la realidad celestial donde nuestros cuerpos ya no experimentan enfermedades ni dolor. ¡Se levanta a los que necesitan curación en este Misterio! En segundo lugar, meditar sobre este Misterio abre el beneficio de una muerte feliz. Oramos por todos los que están cerca de la muerte para que su alma sea acompañada por Jesús a nuestro Padre celestial de la misma manera que Jesús llevó a María al cielo.

Con María, En María, Por María ... ¡Para mayor gloria de Dios!

This weekend we bid farewell to Andy Kukec, Associate Director of Liturgical Music and Adult Formation minister for the Catholic Community of Waukesha. For the past year, Andy has brought a lot of joy to the music ministry at St. Mary and the community. He has supported the collaborative efforts of the community and empowered musicians to share their gifts at the celebration of the Eucharist. Thank you Andy, for your hard work and dedication.

At the beginning of the month, Michael Thiele, Pastoral Musician at St. Joseph Parish left his position to begin a new career as a High School Theology teacher in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Michael worked extremely hard in the collaborative efforts of the Catholic Community of Waukesha, most especially with our bi-lingual efforts. Thank you Michael, for your hard work and support to celebrate the diversity in music ministry of our faith community.

Both Michael and Andy will be deeply missed by our community. At the present time we will fill the positions with substitute musicians as we navigate the waters of Covid-19 and the Catholic Comeback plan. Please keep Andy and Michael in your prayers.

“Thank God Ahead of Time” -Blessed Solanus Casey Have you ever seen the movie A Few Good Men? Maybe you’re familiar with that scene in which Jack Nicholson’s character yells out, “You can’t handle the truth!” Sometimes, it seems that God is telling us this very thing when in fact, God calls all of us to seek answers, to seek the truth.

Truth is often sought in the religious arena of life. We want black and white, not gray. We demand answers, not questions. Yet when it comes to issues of faith, it is the questions and the gray that allow us to move closer to our God. For people who may be new to seeking God, the Church has a process to help.

The first part of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) involves asking questions. These may range from, “Why do Catholics believe this?,” or “Why do you say or do that?” to “Why does God allow evil?” These questions help the seeker to define his/her desire to continue to seek God through the lens of Catholicism. Appropriately, we call this period of the process “Inquiry.”

The Domestic Church The Liturgy of the Eucharist is when our gifts are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. We bring up bread and wine to be transformed but we should also “bring up” all of what we are to be given on the altar to be transformed.

We need to make sure we have given our best to the one who gives us everything.

In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we also remember the meal that Jesus gave us and the Sacrifice he made for us. In addition, we are connected with the heavenly hosts – angels and saints (the members of our Domestic Church that has gone before us).

How can this part of our weekly Mass experience affect our lives throughout our week?

Join us for a fruitful discussion on how your Domestic Church can incorporate the Liturgy of the Eucharist into your week.
