CCSU Blue Devils 2015-16 Year in Review

Greetings from the Director of Athletics Dear Blue Devil Family and Friends, I invite you to enjoy the attached Annual Report for CCSU Athletics which highlights some of the most notable moments of the 2015-2016 school year and tells the compelling story of the exceptional young men and women in our program. I am in awe of what they accomplish on a daily basis and so very proud of how they represent us with positive energy, character and class.

On behalf of a grateful CCSU Athletics Family, I thank you for joining nearly 1,600 alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, friends and corporate partners who committed close to $800,000 for Blue Devil Athletics during the 2015-2016 fiscal year. This was a record setting year for us in both categories, resulting in Athletics accounting for nearly 35% of all donors to CCSU this past year. Since 2010, your individual and collective generosity has resulted in a 295% increase in annual donors, a 74% increase in annual giving and an 84% increase in corporate sponsorship support for our student-athletes and programs.

The chosen theme for Blue Devil Athletics this past year was #BeReady. It served as a daily reminder to our student-athletes and staff of our high expectations and as a guide to achieve our core objectives. The accomplishments of our student-athletes this year are testament not only to their character and skill but to the culture of excellence that we continue to foster as an athletics program. Among the many highlights from this past year were a record number of student-athletes on the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll, three Northeast Conference team Championships and close to 3,000 hours of community service.

Our primary objective is clear: develop our student-athletes into champions; in the classroom, in competition, in the community and ultimately in life. They live it and prove it every day as they achieve and exceed our expectations. But their ability to excel correlates directly with the unwavering support from you, our Blue Devil family.

While we continue to achieve unprecedented success across the board in each of the aforementioned key areas, I truly believe our best days are just ahead and within our grasp.

Mission

The mission of the Intercollegiate Athletics Program at Central Connecticut State University is to contribute positively to the personal development of students by providing a wide range of opportunities for participation in sports at a highly competitive NCAA Division I level.

The Intercollegiate Athletics Program contributes to the vitality of campus life by providing entertaining, highly-competitive sporting events for the campus and community at large. In this sense, it serves as one of the principle centers of campus life because it contributes to the development of campus identity and sense of community.

Athletics are an appropriate and important component of the Central Connecticut State University experience because they embody many of the intrinsic values and goals of education at our University, in particular, the striving to achieve excellence in all manifestations of human life and the enrichment of the human spirit.

The mission of the Intercollegiate Athletics Program is inextricably tied to the mission of the University. Therefore, as Central Connecticut State University aspires to become one of the best public, comprehensive universities in the nation and the finest in New England, the Intercollegiate Athletics Program similarly aspires to become one of the best athletics programs among comparable universities in the region and nation.

Six-Year Blue Devil Snapshot • Our fundraising and revenue generation efforts have resulted in record-setting numbers and unprecedented success in each of our core objectives. Central Connecticut’s private gifts and corporate sponsorship has risen dramatically since 2010-11.

• The number of donors has nearly TRIPLED and is UP 295%.

• Donations have risen by over $200,000 since 2010 and are UP by 74%.

• Since the 2010 fiscal year, Corporate Sponsorship has RISEN by 84%.

• Athletics set a RECORD in 2015-16 for Donors and total amount of Donations.

• During the 2016 Blue Devil Double Dare Challenge, Athletics donors contributed over $55,000 and accounted for nearly 48% of the total number of donors.

• For the 4th consecutive year, Central Connecticut had programs recognized with an NCAA Public Recognition Award for scoring among the top 10% in its sport with respect to the team APR score.

CHAMPIONS IN COMPETITION • The Blue Devils have won 16 Northeast Conference titles since 2010-11, marking the most successful six-year span in CCSU athletics’ Division I history.

• Since 2010-11, CCSU’s 16 Northeast Conference team championships is THIRD amongst the league’s current membership.

• Central Connecticut’s 5 championships during the 2014-15 year was the MOST among all Northeast Conference schools.

CHAMPIONS IN THE CLASSROOM • CCSU student-athletes accumulated an average GPA of 3.10.

• The number of CCSU student-athletes on the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll (3.20 GPA or better) has risen from 129 in 2013-14 to 168 in 201516. Furthermore, 28 Blue Devils earned a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2015-16 after posting a GPA of 3.75 or better.

• 219 (50%) Blue Devil student-athletes achieved at least a 3.0 GPA during 2015-16.

CHAMPIONS IN THE COMMUNITY • CCSU student-athletes have performed close to 27,000 hours of community service.

Student-Athlete Experience Activities & Accomplishments: • Held 6th annual Student-Athlete welcome back event where we distributed the t-shirt of the year with the theme, #BeReady.

• Student-athletes attended educational workshops including: • Dr. Derek Greenfield, “Confronting Ourselves: Promoting Diversity, Cultural Competence, and Inclusive Excellence” • Don McPherson, “You Throw Like a Girl”: Discussion on language, gender and violence. The presentation focused on nurturing positive language and understanding of masculine identity.

• All freshmen and transfers attended a presentation by Interval House on domestic violence and healthy relationships.

• Partnered with the Ana Grace Project to promote love, community and connection for every child and family.

Collaborated with Fleet Feet to help with this mission and hosted students from Chamberlain Elementary School. CCSU student-athletes distributed sneakers and CCSU water bottles to 5th graders during a day of fun and exercise.

• Men’s/Women’s Soccer participated in “Read Across America” Day at Gaffney Elementary School in New Britain • Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Initiatives: • Smalley Academy Visitation - Helping the local community through education.

• Boys & Girls Club of New Britain Visitation - Helping the local community through recreation.

• Charity Dodgeball Tournament - Fundraiser for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation • Fresh-Check Day Volunteers - Engaging the campus community in mental health awareness and advocacy.

• New Britain Soup Kitchen Volunteers - Helping all find a hot meal and a home in New Britain, CT • Northeast Conference “Penny Wars” - Fundraising for Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation.

2015 Scholar & Donor Reception

On October 8, 2015, the CCSU Scholarship Recognition Reception was held in Alumni Hall. The generosity of donors make these funds possible, and the evening’s reception provided an opportunity for the donors to connect with the scholarship recipients.

Champions in the Classroom CCSU Student-Athletes Compiled a 3.10 average GPA in 2015-16 • The women’s basketball and women’s golf teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards • The men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s track & field, women’s lacrosse and swimming & diving teams posted a perfect 1000 APR score for the 2014-15 cohort year.

• The women’s soccer and women’s golf teams earned Northeast Conference Team GPA Awards for having the highest team GPA in their respective sports.

• A total of 168 CCSU student-athletes were named to the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll (3.20 GPA or higher) in 2015-16 - THE MOST IN THE PAST SIX YEARS • 28 student-athletes were named to the Northeast Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for compiling a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

• Northeast Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete Award - Evie Rentzel • 12 of 18 teams maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2015-16 school year.

• The men’s and women’s soccer teams earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award.

• The women’s volleyball team earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 9th consecutive year and Nicole Dean was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

• The women’s lacrosse team was named an IWLCA Academic Honor Squad and Elyse Malecki and Kelsey Murphy earned IWLCA Academic Honor Roll honors.

• The men’s and women’s golf teams earned the GCAA Team Academic Award.

• Men’s cross country and men’s track & field were named USTFCAA All-Academic Teams.

Champions in the Community • Among the community service activities our student-athletes participated in for 2015-16 are: • • • • • • •

Collegiate Athlete Peer Ambassadors (CAPA), in partnership with the Interval House, worked with and were trained to notice the warning signs in unhealthy dating relationship. The CCSU student-athletes gained knowledge of how to help and resources to refer students to in times of need.

Took part in reading programs and mentor programs with local New Britain elementary schools. Multiple teams and several student-athletes participated in “Read Across America Day”.

Student-athletes donated 124 gift-filled shoeboxes to Operation Christmas Child for Samaritan’s Purse.

The Football team organized and ran a campus-wide event, “Be The Donor,” to register individuals for the Be The Match bone marrow registry.

CCSU and over 200 student-athletes teamed up with The Ana Grace Project and Fleet Feet West Hartford to distribute sneakers to fifth graders from New Britain’s Chamberlain Elementary and have a day of activities on campus and on the athletics fields.

Men and Women’s Basketball participated for the 3rd consecutive year at New Britain’s Hoops for Homeless, a charity event to raise funds to address homelessness for New Britain families.

Several teams participated in a new initiative by attending mental health wellness workshops conducted by the athletics department.

• CCSU completed over 2,859 hours of service in the community and finished fifth in the NEC Building Communities Award presented by Bayer competition.

Central held its annual Senior Athletic Awards and Academic Awards Banquet on May 4, 2016. The evening honored the Blue Devils’ senior student-athletes along with athletic trainers, cheerleaders, dance team members and pep band members.

Seniors Makenna Lommori and Jamal Fruster were presented with the coveted Gail Rutz and Frederick M. Gladstone awards as the most outstanding female and male student-athletes, respectively.

The evening also included recognition for the academic accomplishments of CCSU’s student-athletes. Over 100 student-athletes earned Academic Awards, and furthermore 63 were named to the Travelers Athletic Director’s AllAcademic Team.

The Collegiate Athlete Peer Ambassadors (CAPA) group of student-athletes was also presented the Director of Athletics Award for exemplifying “what it means to be a Blue Devil.” The award is given only when the Athletic Director determines it has been earned during a school year.

Blue Devil Senior Reflections “Becoming a Blue Devil was an experience that has molded me into the individual I am today.

Being an international student I had no idea what the future held for me when agreeing to attend CCSU, however, I can now say with confidence that it was hands down the best decision of my life.

Not only have the students and faculty helped me attain my degree, they have guided, helped, and welcomed me into the biggest and most supportive family I have ever been part of.

With the student-athlete experience comes pressure to grow up, and mature, at a rate that sometimes may become overwhelming.

The road isn’t always smooth, but I promise you that the Blue Devil family surrounding you will push your through any struggles, they will be your rock to lean on, and you will be successful.

Dr. William Moore was part of the CCSU family for nearly three decades, serving most notably as the Director of Athletics from 1962-1982. he was an extraordinary man; a gentleman, a scholar, and a revered athletics administrator. With his passing in December 2013, college athletics lost a giant, CCSU lost one of its greatest ambassadors, and the Blue Devils lost one of their most ardent supporters.

The dignified manner in which Bill Moore conducted all aspects of his life served as a lesson to us all. For those reasons, in 2014, we announced that we would be changing the name of our annual golf tournament in his honor. On an annual basis, a portion of all proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Moore Family Athletic Fund in support of athletic department operations.
