Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibilit y”

To be “ eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients)

Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualif y?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230 -2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.

Pumping Problems: Signs You’re Using the Wrong Flange Size

“When was the last time you checked your flange size?” is a question not enough lactation professionals are asking their pumping parents. You may be making the common mistake of only using the flanges that came with your pump. Most parents aren’t aware there are additional flange sizes available. Checking your flange size regularly is critical for pumping parents because your flange size can change over the course of your breastfeeding journey. Following are signs you are using the wrong flange size.

Color Changes: Is your nipple turning blue, purple, or white? This is a huge red flag that you’re using the wrong flange size. Your nipple should remain the same color throughout and after your pumping session.

Shooting Pain: Are you experiencing sharp, shooting pain in your breast? The incorrect flange size causes ineffective pumping which can lead to not ‘emptying’ your breasts effectively, causing pain.

Sensitivity: Do you have extreme nipple sensitivity? If you step out of a warm shower and the cool air of the bathroom irritates

Free Mental Health Tool Kit

There is no health without mental health. Statistics share that 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, and more specifically, one in five teens between the ages of 12–18 suffer from at least one diagnosable mental health disorder. It’s important to acknowledge that nearly everyone will face challenges that will impact their mental health.

This free tool kit supports positive mental health by providing teens, parents, clinicians, and teachers with information and resources designed to help them cope with mental health concerns in healthy ways—including how to move past the mental health struggles created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sections include:

• Dealing with trauma and trauma responses

• Cultivating self-care

• Being resilient during change

• How parents, teens, and professionals can help This tool kit acts as an interactive guidebook and highlights helpful information and important mental health statistics. You’ll also find practical tips and tools that everyone can use to boost their mental health wellness.

Visit paradigmtreatment.com/kit to download the free kit and learn more.

–Paradigm Treatment Centers

your nipples, you may be using the wrong flange size.

Swelling: Does your nipple swell or appear larger in size? Your nipple should remain close to the same size after pumping.

Tight Fit: Does your nipple get stuck in the flange? Your nipple should be able to move freely within the flange with minimal rubbing up against the sides.

Pulling: Is your areola is getting pulled into the flange? Your nipple should be taking up most, if not all, of the space within a flange. There should be little to none of your areola in the flange.

The side effects of incorrect flange size can vary by individual, but can include pain, nipple damage, clogs, mastitis, or reduced milk supply. These effects can be severe enough to push parents to end their breastfeeding journey.

If you think you’re using the wrong flange size, or need any assistance with pumping, reach out to a lactation specialist for help. Parenting is stressful, but pumping doesn’t have to be!

How to Teach Your Kids Critical Thinking Skills

Kids are inundated with information on a daily basis. So how do they learn to distinguish facts from opinion, fiction, and falsehoods?

Teaching kids to think critically is the solution. Good critical thinking skills are necessary to assess information and form logical conclusions. Here are a few ways to help your child develop problem-solving skills and foster critical thinking.

Ask your Child Questions

When your kid comments on or asks a question about a situation, turn it into an opportunity. Rather than immediately providing a definitive response, ask your child open-ended questions that require thought. For example, respond with, "What would you do to solve this problem?" or "I'd like to hear what you think."

Once your child answers, ask them—in a non-judgemental tone—to defend their answer. "Can you tell me why you think that?" or "What led you to this conclusion?" This provides them the opportunity

to consider how they arrived at their responses. The idea is for your child to discover faulty thinking and connect the dots to logical thinking.

Whether or not your child's thinking is correct or logical, offer praise for their effort to think the answer through. Then, if the reasoning is faulty, gently explain what you believe and how to correct false assumptions or misconceptions.

Encourage Outside-the-Box Thinking

Kids have the innate ability to think outside the box. This is known as divergent thinking. However, as we grow, thought becomes more convergent. A certain degree of convergent thinking is necessary, so we don't give the same weight to all possibilities. But divergent thinking is still crucial to solving problems.

When a problem arises, ask your child to think of all the possible ways to solve it. Also, have your child consider and weigh out the pros and cons of each solution to determine which is best.

Take Advantage of Everyday Tasks

Real-life opportunities to problem solve are an excellent way to hone kids' critical thinking skills. When your child does chores, let them do it their way a few times to try to figure out an efficient way to conquer the task.

If your child hasn't figured it out after multiple tries, ask them if they can think of a faster or better way to do it. You can also offer a tip and ask how that might help.

Use Play to Foster Critical Thinking

Play provides lots of learning opportunities! Encourage your kids to strategize when they play games. Have them think through their next move and also consider what their opponent might do. Building with blocks provides another opportunity. Have your child consider how placing one piece will affect the placement of others and, ultimately, the look or functionality of the structure. Play is a great way to sneak learning into their day!

Summer Camp 101 S

ummer camp is without a doubt something kids look forward to all year. Nevertheless, there are important issues you should address to ensure that your kids have a great time at camp. Based on my experiences as a parent of seasoned summer campers as well as conversations with other parents, I’ve pulled together a list of some of the most common issues.

Allergies

If your kids suffer from seasonal allergies, like grass or tree pollen, tell the camp physician and pack all the medication they need. It can be a real drag for them to walk around the whole time with a runny nose or watery eyes. If they suffer from more serious allergies, like animal or food allergies, inform the camp that your kids shouldn’t come into contact with those allergens. Our son is very allergic to horses. We didn’t think anything of it before we realized that his camp has alpacas, which can induce the same allergic reaction as horses.

Email, Phone, and Care Packages

Every camp has a policy about how they prefer you to communicate with your kids—whether by email or phone—how many care packages you may send, and what you can put in them. Know and follow those policies. Kids don’t want to be called out for not following the rules. It’s embarrassing, and it can hurt them socially.

Making Friends

Some kids find it easy to make friends, and others have a harder time. If your kids have a difficult time, ask if they can bunk with one or more of their regular friends from home. Most camps permit that. Explain to your kids that no matter how confident the other kids may appear, chances are that they are nervous too. Use yourself as an example and tell them what you did when you were a kid—it makes the situation much more relatable and manageable.

Homesickness

Your kids can still get homesick even if they’re rooming with close friends. It can happen to any camper, no matter how wellprepared and seasoned they are. Find out how the camp handles homesickness. Can you call your kids, even if there’s a no-phone policy? Is it possible to visit them outside camp visiting days? Pack some family photographs or a favorite stuffed animal with their belongings; it can help put them at ease.

Safety

You want your kids to have fun at camp, but you also want them to be safe. One of the best things you can do to prepare them—if they don’t already know how—is to teach them how to swim. Most camps include a swimming program with access to a pool. Another popular activity is hiking. Be sure that your kids have footwear with good traction. More generally, teach your kids how to have fun while still knowing and respecting their limits.

Emergencies

Despite your best efforts, emergencies can happen. Hopefully, it won’t be anything serious, and the camp nurse can take care of it. To be on the safe side, pack hard copies—front and back—of your hospital, medical, and dental insurance cards with your kids’ belongings. A hospital stay can be very costly without insurance.

Extra Trips

Many summer camps offer day or overnight trips to nearby ball games, amusement parks, or other special places for an extra fee. These trips can be expensive, so before you sign your kids up for them, ask the camp how many kids usually go on these trips and take a good hard look at what you can afford. If only a few kids are going and the trips are expensive, don’t feel pressure to sign your kids up. There are plenty of exciting activities for all the kids who remain at the camp site.

Really Lucky Shamrock Cupcakes

Make the Cupcakes

1. Heat the oven to 350°F and spray nonstick cooking spray in a mini muffin pan. Place mini cupcake liners in each cup.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

3. Using an electric mixer, beat the sugar and butter in a large bowl on mediumhigh speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Reduce the mixer speed to medium and add the eggs, one at a time, beating to mix each one in before adding the next. Beat in the vanilla, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

4. Reduce the mixer speed to low and add the flour mixture and then the milk in the following pattern: one third flour, half milk, one third flour, last half milk, last third flour.

5. Beat until the batter is just incorporated. (Try not to mix too much or the cupcakes will be tough instead of fluffy!)

6. Divide the batter between the muffin cups, pouring in about 1 1/2 tablespoons into each cup.

7. Ball up a little piece of foil and stick it between the outside of each liner and the pan to create an indent. Then place 2 small rectangles of foil (3 sheets thick) on opposite sides of the liners to create small hearts.

8. Bake until golden brown, about 12–18 minutes. Remove from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool completely.

• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
