Pumping Problems: Signs You're Using the Wrong Flange Size

“When was the last time you checked your flange size?” is a question not enough lactation professionals are asking their pumping parents. You may be making the common mistake of only using the flanges that came with your pump. Most parents aren’t aware there are additional flange sizes available. Checking your flange size regularly is critical for pumping parents because your flange size can change over the course of your breastfeeding journey. Following are signs you are using the wrong flange size.

Color Changes: Is your nipple turning blue, purple, or white? This is a huge red flag that you’re using the wrong flange size. Your nipple should remain the same color throughout and after your pumping session.

Shooting Pain: Are you experiencing sharp, shooting pain in your breast? The incorrect flange size causes ineffective pumping which can lead to not ‘emptying’ your breasts effectively, causing pain.

Sensitivity: Do you have extreme nipple sensitivity? If you step out of a warm shower and the cool air of the bathroom irritates your nipples, you may be using the wrong flange size.

Swelling: Does your nipple swell or appear larger in size? Your nipple should remain close to the same size after pumping.

Tight Fit: Does your nipple get stuck in the flange? Your nipple should be able to move freely within the flange with minimal rubbing up against the sides.

Pulling: Is your areola is getting pulled into the flange? Your nipple should be taking up most, if not all, of the space within a flange. There should be little to none of your areola in the flange.

The side effects of incorrect flange size can vary by individual, but can include pain, nipple damage, clogs, mastitis, or reduced milk supply. These effects can be severe enough to push parents to end their breastfeeding journey.

If you think you’re using the wrong flange size, or need any assistance with pumping, reach out to a lactation specialist for help. Parenting is stressful, but pumping doesn’t have to be!
