An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

Read the Label When Working with Pesticides

Pesticides are chemicals used to prevent, kill, or repel pests. Pests can be insects, rodents, weeds, or even some germs. People can be exposed without their knowledge to pesticide residue in their home, school, or workplace environments. Pesticides can get inside the body in several ways—eating, drinking, breathing them in, and through skin contact.

Although pesticides can be useful, they also can be dangerous if not used with care. California Poison Control System (CPCS) advises that using pesticides safely depends on many things. Among the most important are selecting the appropriate product, using that product properly, and reading the label to use that product the right way to reduce the risk of problems.

Infants, young children, pregnant women, elderly, and people with pre-existing conditions are the most vulnerable to pesticide poisoning. These groups should be protected from pesticide

exposure as much as possible. Agricultural workers are also at risk of excessive pesticide exposure. Worker exposure to pesticides can occur during preparation and application, by drift from neighboring fields, or by contact with pesticide residues on crops, soil, or spraying equipment.

“If you use pesticides, always read the label first and follow the directions to the letter. Be especially mindful of the precautions and restrictions listed,” says Rais Vohra, Medical Director for the Fresno/Madera Division of CPCS. “Also, don’t use more than the label directs. Twice the amount will not do twice the job.”

When used properly, pesticides help to decrease harmful or unwanted pests in the environment. However, used improperly, pesticides can harm people, pets, and the environment.

Creating Safety Plans for People with Autism

April is National Autism Acceptance Month. When it comes to identifying safety risks and preventing emergencies for an individual with autism, you and your family are the best advocates, and most likely the people responsible for taking the necessary steps to develop a safety plan.

A safety plan should include key participants—school personnel, daycare providers, neighbors, caretakers, and extended family; anyone involved in your network that has daily contact with the person at risk. It is critical to take the time to evaluate what your family member needs to be safe and protected at home, school, and in their community.

Top safety risk for individuals with autism include wandering or eloping from safety, pica, drowning, household toxins , and misunderstandings related to communication difficulty.

Safety Plan Checklist:

• Does the person with autism tend to wander, run away, or get lost in a crowd?

• Have your home, school, and community activities been evaluated for safety? Have preventative measures been put into place in each of these areas?

• Does the person always wear identification with a contact number listed?

• Have you let your neighbors and community know about your child with autism?

• Are safety skills included in the Individual Education Program in your school district?

• Have you contacted your local 911 call centers?

Use the printable forms and handouts in the Autism Safety Kit (autismspeaks.org/tool-kit/autism-safety-kit) to develop a multifaceted safety plan specific to a person with autism's unique needs. Remember, a person with autism's safety needs can change as they get older or when there is a sudden change in routine, so the safety plan should be updated on a regular basis.

Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibilit y”

To be “ eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients)

Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualif y?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230 -2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.

O Top Ten Tips for Gardening with Kids

ne of the best things you can grow in a garden is a life-long gardener. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when gardening with kids:

1. Be Prepared to Pivot

Gardening with kids requires flexibility. Most kids prioritize exploration and discovery in the garden rather than appearance or production. You might have a planned activity, but they prefer to focus on the grasshopper they just found. Rather than corral them back to the task at hand, try talking to them about the grasshopper, sharing their wonder and excitement, and then finding a way to connect it to your activity. Remember that positive associations with gardening are the goal. If they walk away with those, you’ve succeeded, and they’ll be back to learn more.

2. Let Kids Choose What to Plant

Offer guidance and guarantee some sure-success plants are among their picks—and if they want beets, roses, and petunias, why not? Giving kids agency over what plants they grow also gives them the incentive to continue engaging with their plants over time. Don’t forget that gardening isn’t confined to a raised bed or backyard. You can grow a multitude of plants indoors, on windowsills, porches, or balconies, you name it!

3. Choose Garden Projects that Work for Your Needs

To set yourself up for success, always consider projects or activities you might want to try through the lenses of the kids’ age and ability levels, your budget, available space, available time, safety concerns, and growing conditions in your area.

4. Embrace Failure

A garden is a wonderful place for kids to try caring for a living thing and being responsible for the success or failure of a growth cycle. When failures happen, it’s a space for kids to learn how to deal with an undesired outcome, grow their resiliency, and try again.

5. Leave Room for Good OldFashioned Digging

Many kids love to dig in the dirt, and digging and observing are excellent for their sensory systems, gross and fine motor skills, and practicing focus and empathy for small creatures. Leaving a designated dig space in the garden gives them a spot to search for worms and grubs and helps keep disruptive digging out of other areas of the garden.

6. Make the Garden a Joyful Place

Positive associations with nature early on in life give kids a sense of belonging to the natural world and responsibility for it. Help with the behind-the-scenes maintenance of kids' gardens so they continue to be an inviting space for them. Give them opportunities for responsibility, but don't turn gardens into a chore or punishment they would rather avoid. Embrace kids’ preferences, and avoid pressing them to taste, touch, or smell something they don’t want to.

7. Ensure Activities are Geared Towards Equal Access

Think through how to share a gardening experience equally with all your kids. Try collaborative gardening: one kid digs a hole, another sprinkles compost, another kid places a seedling in, and so on. This helps multiple kids be involved in smaller

garden tasks. Not all kids will physically be able to garden the same way. Consider the practical physical needs of the kids you are gardening with. For example, raised table-top beds or vertical gardens can provide access to kids using wheelchairs, and gloves can be helpful for kids who have sensory needs.

8. Not Every Minute Must be Filled with a Task

Set aside time when kids can explore the garden without an intended activity. Positive associations also come from moments when kids are allowed to observe, explore, and play in a self-led way. They might also surprise you with observations leading to fantastic teaching moments you hadn’t planned, unlocking areas of your garden knowledge you hadn’t thought to share with them.

9. Incorporate Play

Plants provide so many opportunities for play! Consider bringing toys into the garden so a bed of lettuce can turn into a magical miniature forest, some mud and cuttings can become ingredients in a pretend pie, and so much more.

10. Enjoy Gardening Yourself!

7 Steps to Start Growing Produce at Home

Growing your own produce is an all-around smart practice, from the money you’ll save at the grocery store to the contributions you can make toward a cleaner planet.

Maintaining a garden takes some effort, but it’s a project even a beginner can tackle with ease. Consider these tips to start growing your at-home garden:

1. Select a perfect spot. You’ll want to place your garden in an area where you see it often so you’re reminded to weed and care for it regularly. Find a flat area you can access easily, where erosion and other pitfalls—including hungry wildlife—won’t be a problem.

2. Choose between ground and containers. There are pros and cons to gardening in containers vs. the ground, and there’s no universal right choice. Rather, the best garden depends on your goals and preferences. A ground garden usually offers more space and may provide a better growth environment for roots. However, a container garden is often easier to maintain and may be all you need if you wish to grow just a few plants.

One of the most powerful teaching tools is the use of modeling. Don’t underestimate how impactful showcasing your enthusiasm for gardening can be on your kids. Continued on page 20

KidsGardening creates opportunities for kids to play, learn, and grow through gardening, engaging their natural curiosity and wonder.

Got Spring Fever?

Try These 12 Fun, Outdoor Family Activities

Make the most of this exhilarating season by getting outdoors to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine, and loads of fun with these family activities.

Visit a state or national park. Forests and parks come alive in the spring. Not only does the greenery begin to fill in, but wildlife abounds. So it's the perfect time of year for a nature hike. Be sure to take along your binoculars and a camera to capture newly blossomed plants, wild animals, and chirping birds.

Hold a garage or toy sale. Have your kids clean out their old toys and outgrown clothes. Then offer your kids a portion or all of the proceeds for holding or helping with the sale. Be sure to advertise it online and post signs on nearby corners and your main intersection. Not looking to hold a sale? Head out treasure hunting at other sales. Save money all while reducing your imprint on the planet by buying used. Before you head out, check for sale listings online. Then plan your route to make the most of your outing.

Fly a kite. A breezy spring day is perfect for flying kites. For even more fun, order a kite kit in advance for your family to design their own. Then, check out videos on how to fly a kite before you head out to ensure your adventure is a success.

Make a yard ornament. Gather up your family to brainstorm a fun project to liven up your yard or landscape. Make a unique birdhouse, colorful bird feeder, artistically painted planter, mosaic walkway or welcome sign, fun sculpture, or musical wind chimes. Whatever you come up with, you can likely find design ideas, instructions, or kits online.

Go on a picnic. Pack some finger foods like sandwiches, cheese sticks, veggies and dip, fruit, cookies, and beverages. Then head to the park to enjoy some play, relaxation, and grub. Don't forget the bubbles!

Build a fort. If you have a stash of construction materials or old boxes lying around—put it to use by building a fort. Another option is to buy several sections of privacy fencing as prebuilt walls for your fort. There are many ways to build a fort. So search online for easy, low-cost ideas.

Play disc golf. These courses have popped up in parks everywhere and are fun for all ages. Just head to your nearby sporting goods store and pick up a few discs before you go.

Go for a peddle. Whether it's a ride through your neighborhood or on a paved trail system, a bike ride is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and in all the sights of spring.

Go on a scavenger hunt. Make a list of items that are found outdoors, such as an oak leaf, clover, piece of trash, chunk of gravel, dandelion, soda can, speckled rock, wildflower, and so forth. Before heading out for the hunt, set a time limit and any safety rules. Then split up into two teams and see who can bring home the most items on the list.

Attend an outdoor sporting event. Nothing says 'it's spring' like watching sports in the fresh air. Get some tickets to a baseball game, check the game schedule for your kids' school, or head to a public court to watch pickleball. Before you go, be sure to dress in the colors of your favorite team.

Plant a flower or vegetable garden. Gather up the kids, head to the nursery, and pick out flats of flowers or packets of vegetable seeds. When you get home, plan the arrangement and spacing of the plants. Then have everyone pitch in with digging and planting. To maintain your kids' interest in the garden, set up a watering schedule, and have everyone take turns throughout the season.

Take a country drive. Spring is the perfect time of year to roll down the windows and take a scenic cruise. Kick back, put on some happy music, and enjoy the blue skies, budding trees, and bursts of colorful flowers.

3. Understand the importance of quality soil.

You may think any dirt will do, but keep in mind the soil you plant in will be the primary source of nutrients for your produce. Not only that, but quality soil provides stability so plants can root firmly and grow healthy and sturdy to support their bounty. Quality soil also allows for ample drainage. Organic matter like compost, leaf mold, or aged manure all help improve soil quality.

4. Keep water close.

Lugging water can quickly eliminate the pleasure of tending your garden, so be sure you’re situated near a hose. You’ll know it’s time to water when the soil is dry about an inch below the surface.

5. Plan for plenty of sun.

A bright, sunny spot is a must, since most vegetables, herbs, and fruits depend on six or more hours of sun every day. Remember the sun’s path changes throughout the year, and as trees and foliage grow, they may produce more shade with each growing season.

6. Consider what you’ll grow.

Starting with vegetables you know you like is a smart starting point since you’ll be pouring sweat equity into making them grow. Over time, you might add new varieties, but early on, keep your focus on foods you know you like so you can see a meaningful return and avoid waste. You’ll also need to consider what you can grow to maturity within your area’s growing season. If necessary, you might want to start transplants you can nurture indoors before moving them outside when the temperatures allow.

7. Plant according to a calendar.

Knowing how long it takes different foods to mature will help you create a planting calendar. You don’t want to harvest everything at once, and if you stagger planting and replant what you can, you’ll have a garden that produces food for your family for a longer period of time.

Prevent Pesticide Poisoning

Follow these tips to prevent pesticide exposure:

• Store pesticides in their original containers—up, away, and out of sight of children and pets.

• Clearly label anything containing pesticides.

• Read the label and follow the directions every time you use a pesticide.

• Use protective clothing and equipment as directed by the product label.

• Wash your hands right after handling and using pesticides.

• Remove clothes and shoes that may have been contaminated with pesticides before entering your home.

• Wash potentially contaminated clothes separately from other laundry.
