Columbia’s culture is rich in many difference aspects. From dancing to music to the food, the culture is incredibly diverse and special.

Sports are also very important to Colombia’s culture.

So if you’re into sports, maybe stop by a football game on your visit.

y r o t s Hi Colombia’s main language is Castilian Spanish since they used to be a colony of Spain. Many indigenous languages are spoken throughout Colombia as well including: Arawakan, Chibchan, Cariban, Tupi-Guaraní, and Yurumanguí. Its capital is Bogotá and the main religion is Roman Catholic. The people of Colombia are mainly from European, Indigenous, and African descent.

Colombia’s economy has been based off of many different things throughout its history.

Gold mining supported their economy in the colonial period but their economy now is more expansive. The country’s economy is now based off of agriculture as well as manufacturing goods for exporting and people’s homes

The ty i C t s Lo Steeped in history, La Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City) a sight to see for anyone visiting Colombia who loves to go on hikes. It’s the center of small villages belonging to the Tayrona people believed to be built around 800 AD. The people who lived there abandoned the city during the Spanish Conquest and it was rediscovered in 1972 and archaeologists worked carefully to restore the city in 1976. Visiting this hidden city is not for the faint of heart; it requires a five day and 44 kilometer hike which includes crossing rivers and going up steep mountains.

Environment

Colombia’s environment is very diverse and incudes rainforests, grasslands, deserts, and mountains. Since it’s located near the equator, the tropical temperatures don’t change much throughout the year and the the changing of seasons is not very noticeable. Efforts to help conserve Colombia’s landscapes and native species are being made by multiple groups. Exploitations of natural resources is very common in Colombia so it’s imperative that these conservation projects are taken seriously. But some progress is being made the more Colombia works on sustainability, combatting climate change, and conserving their natural landscapes.

Caño Cristales is located in Serranía de la Macarena National Park. It’s a 62.1 mile long river that’s full of color from June to November.

Plants called “macarenia clavigera” is a plant that causes these vivid colors in the river. This is the only river in the world with this colorful phenomenon.

This sight is only able to be seen during a very specific time period where conditions aren’t too wet or too dry. The plants need the perfect amount of sunlight and enough water to grow

y t e f Sa Unfortunately, Colombia is not that safe for United States citizens to travel to. The U.S. Embassy stated a level three travel advisory for Colombia to U.S. citizens. There is a lot of crime and terrorism as well as criminal organizations all throughout the country. Even though it may seem safe to travel there, attacks from terrorist groups could happen at any moment and any public or government location.

Attacks aren’t specifcally targeted towards United States citizens but it is still smart to stay alert if you travel there and take precautions. The U.S. Embassy urges for citizens to take these actions in order to stay safe: (1) avoid large gatherings, don’t bring attention to yourself, be aware of your location and what’s around you, and lastly, to be up to date with your personal safety plans.

l a i t n Esse stion Que Colombia’s landscape is one of the reasons why their economy is heavily based on agriculture. A lot of different crops can be grown in the country due to their wide variety of climates, which is why a lot of people are farmers. Sadly, people don’t treat the land kindly.

Deforestation is a large reason why Colombia’s forests are getting smaller. Cattle ranches are increasing in number and size due to an increase in beef consumption in Colombia. Efforts are being made to save the land by various organizations, but it’s clear that the land treats people better than the people.
