St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 4/B Newsletter 4th August 2014 balanced life style. The excitement that surrounds Healthy Harold’s annual visit energises us all.

Dear Parents Today countries around the world commemorate 100 years since the declaration of World War 1 and they remember the sacrifice and courage, the waste and destruction that resulted. Interestingly, the anniversaries of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War 2 also fall in this week. We pray earnestly for peaceful resolutions in theatres of war around the world today. Cowra in particular celebrates tomorrow the good that continues to come from the POW breakout 70 years later. Even out of the violence of over two hundred deaths here and the tragedy of war on the larger scale, good can be made to grow if enough good people with enough courage and perseverance take up the cause … and that is what has been given to us to carry on.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand Matthew 14:13-21 You are the Lord ruling heaven and earth. You take care of us, You give us everything we need. Sometimes we doubt and think we will not have enough. We worry about having food, clothes, a place to live. Help us trust that You will always take care of us. We pray in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

Congratulations and thank you to the numerous students participating in community commemorations over these days; whether you are Youth Councillors, cadets, dancers, lantern paraders, wreath layers, musicians, hosts, exhibitors, you add wonderfully to the community in which we live. Netball NSW Schools Cup Regional Finals On Tuesday 29 July our Stage 3 and Stage 4 Netball teams travelled to Orange to contest the second round of the Netball NSW Schools Cup, the Western Region Finals. Stage 3 After an excellent performance at the regional carnival in Bathurst, our Stage 3 girls were excited to contest the regional finals of the Schools Cup. The girls started with a tough game against St Mary’s Orange, going down by a few goals. The second game was another tough game against St Mary’s Warren. After a close and hard-fought game the girls were eventually defeated by 2 goals. The other games saw the girls play St Laurence’s Forbes and St Matthew’s Mudgee, with convincing wins against both teams. Congratulations must go to the girls for their excellent participation and sportsmanship in both the regional carnival and finals. Thank you for your dedication and hard-work, you did us proud! A special thank you also to the support from parents and for transporting the girls on the day. The team consisted of Zara McKenzie, Ruby Frazer, Matilda Proctor, Mackenzie Bone, Natalie Banks, Kate Price, Emma Chalker, Olivia McNamara and Madeline Webster.

Stage 4 Our girls under direction of "new to Netball" coach @coachthos (yes you can follow Coach Thomas on Twitter) started the group stage of the competition very strongly with an outstanding performance against St. Matthews from Mudgee. With our team tiring late in the second half Mudgee started to expose some questionable decision making by our girls. Fortunately they had amassed a lead that was unreachable in the short period that was left and held on for the win. The other group stage games were against Walgett High School and Oberon High School. Now, not being one to boast, but the performance of these two teams could best be described as "comme ci, comme ca". Through to the Semi-Finals in first place! Matched up with our fiercest rivals, Cowra High School. With the CHS team sleeping in the sun and eating hot chips. @coachthos demanded more from the girls, from the grueling warm-up to the last whistle. The result, we ran rings around them. #proudcoach Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

With only moments before the Final, our team was visited by Mr Scott Hudson, he gave a short, profound motivational speech, our team found a new level of awareness much like Neo after he takes the red pill in the Matrix. Dubbo South, loaded with representative players and full of sass, started strong and led the final match after the first minute 3-1. The girls fought back, levelling the scores and going 4-6 up by half time. After the break St. Raph's kept fighting and never let Dubbo have a easy pass and it showed in the score line as the girls stretched the lead out to 13-6 by the end. Inaugural Western Regional Champions of the Netball NSW School Cup. #Sydney-bound Well Done girls you did St. Raphael's proud.

Bishop Michael’s visit Bishop Michael visited our school in Week 1. Part of his visit included a talk with the Year 6’s about their Confirmation this year.

“Passport to Paris” Bonjour all! One week left of preparations for our whole school "Passport to Paris" event! The primary classes are putting their final brushstrokes on their auction canvases. They are a delightful mix of Eiffel Towers, Van Gogh, Toulouse Lautrec, Tour De France and Even a kindergarten Monet! Please share in their enthusiasm and support the upcoming events. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

A reminder of the "Passport to Paris" happenings: Monday and Tuesday 11 and 12 August- Milkcrate events, from Sydney, will be workshopping with students to build an "Eiffel tower" out of milk bottles in St Raphael’s Hall. Year 5 and 6 are actively building and constructing. Mrs Finlay has created a roster for the whole primary to visit and have a "go" on the bicycle-power generators. Mrs Lil Wilson will be assisting with these two days. She will be explaining the proceedings and introducing our visiting artists to the visiting classes. Students get their "passports" stamped once they have seen the exhibition and watched the Eiffel Tower under construction. Wednesday 13 August- during the day students will be visiting the exhibition. Anyone from the community is welcome to visit after 12, especially if they are not coming to the opening. The opening is at 6pm that evening. Guest judge, Ann Morton, will be handing out prizes. These prizes have been sponsored by the P&F. This will be followed by the art auction conducted by St Raph's parents Patrick Waters and Jon Sullivan. Kindergarten French portraits, taken by Sonia Turner, will be on sale for $3. The tea towels that kindergarten and Year 1 have purchased will be ready for collection at the "tea towel wagon". Rebecca Bennett will be facilitating the tea towels on the night. Mrs Bischof and her food tech students are providing canapés. Mrs McCabe and her team will be providing some champagne, wine and soft drink. Entry is gold coin which enters you into some wonderful door raffles. We look forward to seeing you there and supporting our students and staff! Thursday 14 August is our "Le Cabaret" evening. An evening of entertainment has been organised by our talented Mrs Swansborough and her students. Be delighted by our own "Edith Piaf" and a visit from the "can-can" girls! It is a supper theatre format. After some initial canapés, you are seated and Mrs Bischof Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

and her team bring on a delightful 3-course French themed meal whilst you enjoy the entertainment. A lovely relaxed evening, hopefully our Eiffel Tower will be "lit up" and we will feel we are sitting in the streets of Paris. This evening is BYO. Tickets are on sale at the front office- $30/person. Outward Bound students will have their "monster raffle" for sale at the door and this will be drawn on the evening.
