St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 1/A Newsletter 19 July 2016 the enriching opportunities that are being made available, so let’s make the very best term we’ve had.

Dear Parents

Michael Gallagher Principal

Daniel Delaney was an Irish Bishop with a particular dedication to Saint Brigid. So serious was he about his dedication that he established the order of religious sisters we know as the Brigidines as well as the order of religious brothers known as the Patricians. On July 9, the anniversary of his death, we remembered Daniel Delaney with particular gratitude in Cowra. Work continued at the school throughout the winter holiday – the refurbishment of four original classrooms of the secondary building has been all but completed. New signage throughout the whole school is in the process of being installed. The digital signage will come later after council deals with requirements. A broken hot water system at school caused considerable damage during the holidays but that’s not the story – the real story is about how local tradespeople and businesses mobilised to achieve and extraordinary turnaround in only a few days to ensure that the school would be able to start the term smoothly. Steve Watmore rendered safe the electricals of the situation, Sutherland’s plumbing dealt with disconnection and removal of the damaged hot water system, Jamieson’s Joinery sourced a replacement hot water system almost instantly, Ken Duffey inspected stabilised and replaced flooring and supports Carpet Court provided hardboard base and floor covering Sutherlands plumbing re-plumbed the new water heater Jamieson’s Joinery fabricated and installed new cabinetry Watmore’s finalised the electrical installation. Errol and Lee McAllister oversaw, laboured and orchestrated the whole performance As a school we thank these businesses which went above and beyond to support us and encourage you to support them in return. Looking ahead, Term 3 looks to be a rich learning time for children, parents and staff members. Kindy Start will commence, Year 11 Preliminary Courses will finish, Year 7 (2017) orientation will be held, Year 8 & 9 will select Elective courses for next year and Year 10 will have their Year 11 courses finalised. The main challenge seems to be to remain open to grasping all P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

Hospitality Hospitality is more than merely serving food. The essence of hospitality is presence. The truly hospitable person is one who offers the gift of their time, attention and interest.

Monday 18 Happy birthday to Nathan Lavender. Tuesday 19 Wednesday 20 Happy birthday to Phoebe Simunic and Maddy White. Thursday 21 Friday 22 Year 2 Historical Walk. Happy birthday to Ryan Hudson and Charlie and Digby rd Williams for 23 .

Secondary Mathematics News – “MATHS MATTERS!!!”

Year 7 – 10 ~ Hoping the holiday has been filled with lots of practical learning experiences. It would be great to hear that your child/ren had some down time from routine and technology – what were some of the activities that were created out of the “b” word BORED. Before the break, all Stage 4 and 5 had the opportunity to experience some STEM activities on the trip to Canberra. It was an unbelievable day, with students shining with such a positive attitude and commitment to the tasks that were attempting. (Many thanks to the organising teachers) As we get back into our daily/ weekly schedule of school and extra curricula, please make sure that your child settles into the practice of attempting some Mathematics tasks at home. Ask them about the Maths topic that may be the start of their term. This will assist in their review process, to help them improve their learning P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

opportunities. Without this reinforcement, the continuum to learn can become difficult. Imagine “learning” to be like a rolling snowball – slowly growing larger as it collects more small pieces to create the complete result at the end. Last term was the trial period for the introduction of Student Mathematics Portfolios, for this process to work, it would really be appreciated if you (as committed parents/guardians) could assist your child/ren in completing their first Self Evaluation of the topic that they are about to complete. Please send it with them to Maths class before Friday (of the even weeks – fortnightly), with parent signature. However, some of you have already signed a Student Self Evaluation – next time can you make sure your child has actually completed all necessary sheets. Having assistance from you as parents/guardians is so important – a Massive Thankyou in advance, for positive learning for all. So please, check the Mathematics work that your child/ren are doing (Written, interactive and visual). Again, if they are not keen to show you - then be aware of how much is actually being completed. Year 11 General Mathematics ~ continuing the topic of Financial Mathematics, we have covered earning and investing interest, now heading onto the Taxation sides of things. This is very appropriate to all of us, at this time of year with the financial year now turning around. If you do feel comfortable talking about tax time with your child please feel free, as it opens their minds to the reality of money matters. Reminder: Year 11 General Mathematics students, please make sure that your Driving Assessment Task is on schedule due early in this term. Last Week's Challenge Answer ~ 465 - Well Done Lisa Jones (on fire – love the commitment) This Week's Challenge Question -

If there are any questions about the Student Application Portfolios (not the Challenge Question), please don't hesitate to contact the Secondary Mathematics teachers. Mrs Cherie MacCabe Year 5 Hill End excursion Please note that the Year 5 excursion due to start tomorrow has been postponed due to expected bad weather. New dates will be finalised and parents notified as soon as possible. Thank you

Diocesan Secondary Netball Gala Day On Friday June 24, our opens netball team travelled to snowy Orange to compete at the Diocesan Netball Gala Day. We played in the year 11 & 12 competition against teams from Red Bend Forbes, James Sheahan Orange, St Matthews Mudgee and St Johns Dubbo. We had a narrow loss to Red Bend, a win against Mudgee and losses against Orange and Dubbo.

Congratulations to Matilda Proctor, India Johnson, Jess McLeish, Yvette Langlands, Kitty Brooks, Olivia Edwards, Michelle Grech, Anna McNamara and Madiee Sparkes who all played with excellent team spirit throughout the day. A special mention to Matilda who stepped up and was defending against (and beating) students who were 5 years older than her! I hope you warmed up when you got home!

Primary Rugby League On the last Wednesday of last term, ten Year 5 and 6 boys travelled to Dubbo to compete in the annual David Peachey Rugby League Finals Day. The boys had reached this Finals Day by finishing second at the Cowra Gala Day. Our first game was against Nyngan and the boys took to the field pumped and ready to perform. Captain Riley 'Mannah' Langfield crossed for three tries, whilst Daniel 'Gordon' Britten, Nick 'Scott' Brown, Eoghan 'Terepo' Killick and Sam 'Gower' Kelly all scored one. When the final whistle blew, the boys in green and gold had come out winners seven tries to nil. Second up was the tough Forbes team. In a seesawing game, Harry 'Robson' Thuaux and Daniel both crossed for tries, but it wasn't enough to get us over the line, with Forbes scoring four. Our final game was a must win match against the unbeaten Holy Family School from Bathurst. We went into this game knowing that if we could beat the Bathurst boys, then we could make the Semis based P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

on our points for and against. A couple of early tries against us was not the start we were hoping for, but the boys rallied well. A try to Harry and two to Riley kept our hopes alive, but sadly it was not to be. Holy Family ran out six tries to three winners. No other team had been able to score three tries against Holy Family, so the boys could be very proud of their efforts. In fact, Holy Family Bathurst made it through to the Grand Final, so our team did extremely well to get as close to them as we did. The great news for Cowra is that the eventual winners were the Mulyan boys from up the road. Our team of ten players had six try scorers mentioned above, however whilst not crossing for a try, Jackson 'DeGois' McLeish, Aidan 'Radradra' Bugeja, Mitchell 'Jennings' Pattingale and Maurice 'French' Brown all played well throughout the day. All of the boys supported one another in all of the games, wearing the school colours well. For nine of these boys, it could have been their last chance of wearing the green and gold St. Raphael's jumpers as a Primary student. You have served the school well boys. Special mention to all of the supporters who travelled to Dubbo that day, taking extra children if the need arose. Thanks. Congratulations boys on your performances this year. Keep playing the 'Greatest Game Of All!'

Collection of school information by the Australian Government under the Australian Education Act 2013 Dear Parent/Guardian Collection of information about schools The Australian Government provides funding to Australian schools under the Australian Education Act 2013. That Act and the associated Australian Education Regulation 2013 require that your child’s school provide the Australian Government with certain information about the school, its financial arrangements, and its student body, in order that the funding is properly calculated and accounted for. What information is collected by the Australian Government? The authority that operates your child’s school such as, a state or territory education department, a Catholic Education Office, or an independent school authority, will provide basic information about the school to the Australian Government, such as its name, address, contact details, years of schooling, and number and makeup of its staff. The authority must provide the Australian Government with information about the school’s finances, including annual audited financial statements and certification that Government funding has been used for proper purposes relating to education. In addition, the authority will provide certain performance information at an aggregate level, including student attendance rates, student results in the National Assessment Program, and for secondary schools, post-school student destinations; such as going into the workforce, vocational education and training, or higher education. The authority is required to publish much of this information, and it is also published by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) on the myschool web site at www.myschool.edu.au. The school authority must also provide information to the Australian Government about the makeup of the school’s student body during an annual school census. This is because Australian Government funding varies according to whether students are primary, secondary, receiving distance education, or are overseas students; and is calculated to provide additional funding, called ‘loadings’, for students at educational disadvantage. The authority must provide information about the number of students attending the school, including the number of: -time and part-time students

th low English proficiency

Who receives this information? Most of the information is provided by school authorities to the Australian Government Department of Education. Some of it is provided directly to ACARA. The Department of Education may in turn pass the information on to ACARA, state and territory education departments and authorities, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and the Productivity Commission. The department will also provide the information to other organisations if required or authorised by law to do so. Why is this information collected? The Department of Education collects information about schools under the Australian Education Act 2013 for the purposes of that Act, which include:

and providing information about schools to the public. The department also uses the information for research, statistical analysis, and policy development on school education for the Australian Government. Information passed to ACARA, state and territory education authorities, the ABS, and the Productivity Commission is used by those organisations for their public purposes. For example, the information collected from school authorities under the Australian Education Act 2013 forms part of the national statistical collection maintained by the ABS. Is my child identified in the information collected by the Australian Government? Where school authorities are required to provide the Australian Government with information about students, that information is aggregated statistical data that does not identify individual students. The information is not matched with any other information held by the Australian Government that can be used to identify individual students. However, from time to time the Department of Education engages contractors to audit or verify school records, to ensure that the information that a school provides to the department is accurate. The information previously collected by the department may also be passed onto these contractors for this purpose. When carrying out an audit, the contractors may need to access information about individual students from the school’s records. This information may be ‘personal information’ within the meaning given in the Privacy Act 1988. The contractors may pass this information onto officers within the department if there is a discrepancy in the data provided by the school and the school’s records and further investigation is required. There may be other circumstances in which a school authority will voluntarily provide information about individual students to the department, when seeking additional funding for those students. Most commonly, these are where a student has not been in attendance at a school during the annual school census but the authority wishes to receive funding for him or her, and where the authority believes that the demographics of the students at the school are not representative of the households in the ABS statistical areas serviced by the school. Other than in exceptional circumstances (for example, investigation of fraud relating to overseas students), the department does not disclose personal information to any overseas recipients. Contacts for further information If you have questions about the collection of information about schools by the Australian Government under the Australian Education Act 2013, please contact: The Recurrent Assistance for Schools team at: GrantsandData.help@education.gov.au. The Department of Education’s privacy policy is available on the department’s website at www.education.gov.au.
