From the Artistic Director
Upon discussing with the singers why it might be that some parts of plays or movies are sung rather than spoken, many of the singers right away offered that in the context of something that is otherwise spoken, to sing part of the dialogue or story is likely for emphasis of some kind. This could be to emphasize something in the plot, or a character’s reaction to something in the plot that is about to happen or did happen. It could be to emphasize an emotion, or to allow a vehicle for a character to ponder something, or to deliver a message be it a literal one or within a metaphor or parable. Or perhaps to support, console, empathize or empower. Many of the lyrics have provided for wonderful opportunities for discussions around the question, “what are they really talking about in this song?” which has been so valuable as we prepared for a concert version of performances of these songs. Near the conclusion of our program today, I invite you to carefully read the beautiful text of the very thoughtful, image-laden Muusika. In fact, I discovered two translations and share both in this program, as the imagery is so vivid in both versions. It gives us much food for thought as we ponder why creating music with other people is so meaningful and can be so powerful.
Consider how our concerts bring us together. They unite the singers not only today, but throughout their months and years of preparation. The texts provide points of departure for interactive discussion and further thought. You, the audience share the listening experience and have collective reactions to the music and the performers. The composer of Muusika, Pärt Uusberg, endured some terrible hardships as a young man, and yet still sought out this poem, pondering how something so beautiful as harmony could be at all, and all of the places it could exist or from whence it could come. In an attempt to feature each graduating class somewhat differently, this year we treat you to listen to each of the members of our Solfa IV class sing a little bit as a solo voice somewhere in the context of this journey through stage and screen through the decades. In addition, please take special note of the written contributions by our graduation class to today’s program.
This year our singers performed at the Towson Library, went caroling in our CCM neighborhood, performed the national anthem for the Baltimore Blast soccer team, performed in Annapolis Opera’s presentation of Carmen, sang at a solemn mass at St. Joseph’s Church, performed a full concert at the Charlestown retirement community chapel and offer our final concert of the season for your today. Our students have contributed some of their Halloween candy to treats for troops, have packed food bags filled with food purchased with money raised from their participation in a benefit concert last year, for Blessings in a Backpack and our families have contributed ornaments for CCM’s first participation in the Festival of Trees to benefit the Krieger Institute for children. The notion of children helping children is something we have embraced at CCM and it is heartening to see these efforts continue.
Please do consider helping us to continue to make this curriculum and performance program and being part of our CCM community an opportunity possible for generations to come by making a donation to our Children’s Chorus and School of Music. If you are unfamiliar with our program, please know that depending on age, the children you hear sing today dedicate anywhere from two to nearly five hours each week, receiving both playful and formal training in singing, reading and writing music, music theory, and ear training. They form strong and lasting chorus friendships and together learn to perform challenging music with commitment to excellence, expressive artistry and a sense of fun while working hard together. Each voice is important and valued. Your gift, if it only helps one voice on their journey, makes all the difference for both the choir as a collective and, certainly and profoundly, for that one voice.
P.S. If you would like to try to identify the plays, operas and films from which today’s selections come, please know there is an “answer key” near the back of the program.

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS The Betty Bertaux Memorial Scholarship Fund CCM’s late Founder, Betty Bertaux, was committed to the ideal that no musically talented child would ever be turned away from Children’s Chorus of Maryland because of an inability to afford the tuition. When Betty passed away in 2014, a memorial scholarship endowment fund was created in her honor, to help CCM continue that commitment. Betty’s legacy lives on in the students she taught, the music she composed, the teachers and musicians she mentored, and at CCM—the school she created and nurtured for nearly 40 years. We welcome contributions to the Betty Bertaux Memorial Fund, so that we may further the cause to which Betty devoted her life—nurturing young musicians, helping them learn what they need in order to share their gifts with the world, and feeding their souls.
The Bill Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund The Bill Snyder Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2016 to honor the memory of Bill Snyder, the late, beloved Building Manager at Towson’s Cranston Building, the home of the Children’s Chorus of Maryland. Bill loved children, music and CCM. He was devoted to keeping the Cranston Building and its grounds, and CCM’s suite in the building, in excellent shape at all times, for the benefit of the students, staff and parents of CCM. Bill’s cheerful, professional disposition and extremely positive energy always spread a very bright light around the Cranston Building and at CCM, and he is deeply missed by all of us who relied on his skills and his unshakable good nature. We welcome additional contributions to the Bill Snyder Memorial Fund, so that Bill’s tender and generous care of CCM may continue, in the form of funding deserving students.
www.ccmsings.org/donate · (410) 494-1480 If you would like to commemorate a loved one by creating a memorial scholarship in their honor, please call us to discuss the possibilities. The objective of CCM’s Memorial Scholarship Endowment Funds is to maintain the principal in perpetuity, while the earnings are used to provide need-based financial assistance to CCM students. Scholarships may be applied to things such as tuition, supplies, uniforms, special events. study materials, and tour costs.

What is the meaning of One Voice?
This is audition season at CCM. Sometime in the next few weeks a child will come to us, maybe 6 years old, with an angelic voice and a passion to sing. Her mom will say, “She sings while she plays, she sings while she draws, she sings herself to sleep, and I have to keep reminding her not to sing while she’s eating, so she doesn’t choke!”
If you are a CCM parent, you know this sort of child.
She will pass the audition beautifully, and leave full of smiles, eager to return. And of course we will invite her to register. But she will not—because her family does not have the resources to pay CCM’s tuition. It costs roughly $2500 to sponsor one CCM beginner for one year. That’s a lot of money, and we do not ask you to do it alone. As part of CCM’s “One Voice” campaign, you can bring together a team to sponsor one child. Do you belong to a giving circle, a community chorus, a faith group, a service club, who might collaborate to sponsor one young musician?
Through choral singing, your “One Voice” “Never doubt that a small student will learn skillful and beautiful music group of thoughtful, making, self-discipline, poise, leadership, committed citizens can confidence, and responsibility—not only for change the world; indeed, it's her own part, but for her musical team-mates, who are counting on her. She’ll learn that she the only thing that ever has.” has gifts that give joy and make the world a —Margaret Mead better place. She’ll discover other cultures and traditions, and learn about the vast variety of human experience, but also about the universal things we share as human beings. She’ll find dear friends who value what she brings to their collective endeavor. And she will learn about the power of a single voice—her own. Please consider reaching out to your friends, families, and colleagues, and joining together to create a “One Voice” sponsorship.

texts & translations Talk to the Animals Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse If we could talk to the animals, just imagine it Chatting to a chimp in chimpanzee Imagine talking to a tiger, chatting to a cheetah What a neat achievement that would be.
If we could talk to the animals, learn their languages Maybe take an animal degree. We'd study elephant and eagle, buffalo and beagle, Alligator, guinea pig, and flea. We would converse in polar bear and python, We could converse in fluent kangaroo. If people asked us, can you speak in rhinoceros, We'd say, "Of course-erous, can't you?"
If we could talk to the animals, learn their languages Think of all the things we could discuss If we could walk with the animals, talk with the animals, Grunt and squawk and speak and walk and talk with the animals, And they could talk to us.

Did you know…
• That a recent study shows that the average American listens to music four hours per day—which equals 60 full days a year, and 13 full YEARS of musiclistening in an average lifetime? • That childhood music training is associated with gains in spatial and mathematical reasoning and complex language-use, in addition to the joy and fulfillment of music-making? • That people who continue their choral singing into their later years report higher morale, more social engagement, fewer falls and less need for medication than their non-choral-singing counterparts? • That music is so beneficial to the brain and body that it’s used in the treatment of many neurological dysfunctions, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and stroke?
• That relatively few people are still engaging in team sports by the time they’re 40, but a high percentage of those who participate in group musicmaking as children remain involved throughout their lives? • That according to a 2014 study of nonprofit organization longevity, CCM has outlived the majority of nonprofits registered with the IRS, and has survived twice as long as the median NPO lifespan? • That despite these statistics, the nonprofit arts sector is suffering declines in public support, corporate, foundation and private donorship, and admissions revenue? • That ticket sales and performance fees make up only 5% of CCM’s revenue? • That tuition covers only 50% of the cost of a CCM education? • That for 40 years, CCM has maintained founder Betty Bertaux’s commitment that no qualified child would be turned away due to inability to pay?

(I don’t want to go to school) Just to learn to be a parrot, ( Just to learn to be a parrot) And recite a silly rule. (And recite a silly rule) If growing up means It would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree, I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up Not me! Not I, Not me! Not me! Never gonna be a man, I won’t! Like to see somebody try And make me. Anyone who wants to try And make me turn into a man, Catch me if you can. I won’t grow up. Not a penny will I pinch. I will never grow a mustache, Or a fraction of an inch. ’Cause growing up is awfuller Than all the awful things that ever were.

Tender Shepherd (count your sheep) Lyrics by Carolyn Leigh Tender shepherd, tender shepherd Watches over all his sheep. One, say your prayers, and two, close your eyes, And three, safe and happily fall asleep. Tender shepherd, tender shepherd, You forgot to count your sheep One, in the meadow, two in the garden, Three, in the nursery, fast asleep.
The Sandman’s Song Lyrics by Adelheid Wette/ and Children’s Prayer English by Katherine K. Davis I am the little Sandman, the kind and gentle Sandman. My step is soft and airy, I’m such a quiet fairy. And every night in ev’ry land, I fill the children’s eyes with sand
With drooping lids they fall asleep And soft they rest in slumber deep, Then, stars in heaven waking, A silver radiance making
A lovely dream will angels bring you while you sleep. Then slumber children, for lovely dreams the angels bring you while you sleep Sandman was here, now let us say our evening prayer. When at night I go to sleep, Fourteen angels watch do keep, Two my head are guarding, Two my feet are guiding,

Hushabye Mountain Lyrics by Richard Sherman and Robert Sherman A gentle breeze from Hushabye Mountain Softly blows over Lullaby Bay, It fills the sails of boats that are waiting, Waiting to sail your worries away. It isn't far to Hushabye Mountain, And your boat waits down by the quay. The winds of night so softly are sighing, Soon they will fly your troubles to sea.
So close your eyes on Hushabye Mountain, Wave goodbye to cares of the day, And watch your boat from Hushabye Mountain Sail far away from Lullaby Bay.

Madison, The voice of a beautiful angel, who has filled our hearts and souls with joy over the past 10 years. Congratulations! Love, Grammie, Grampie, Uncle Scotty and Aunt Sandy
Look around you today— You will see many people sporting various CCM pins. The oval “Sponsor” pins are given to honor those people who have made an extraordinary financial contribution to CCM, of five hundred or more dollars in any one year. CCM could not exist without their generosity. You may spot a child in the audience wearing a “Cricket” pin. These are children who have completed our pre-conservatory program and who may be looking forward to becoming one of the “big kids” next year. Finally, you will see many pins proudly worn by our choristers. Every pin represents a period of extraordinary commitment, on the part of the student and the family, to braving the elements, overcoming illness, and laying other opportunities aside, in order to achieve exemplary attendance at CCM’s classes and rehearsals. Good attendance is the backbone of a polished performance, and while perfect and near-perfect attendance isn’t always possible, we honor those students who accomplish it. And look how many have accomplished it again and again! Taken together, CCM’s pins tell the story of a tremendous commitment—of time, effort, funds, determination and talent—all of which come together to produce today’s concert. If you’re reading this program, chances are that some of that commitment has come from you. So thank you, to all who have made today’s concert possible. We couldn’t have done it without you!

In My Own Little Corner Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II I’m as mild and as meek as a mouse When I hear a command I obey But I know of a spot in my house Where no one can stand in my way
In my own little corner In my own little chair I can be whatever I want to be On the wing of my fancy I can fly anywhere And the world will open its arms to me
I’m a young Norwegian princess or a milkmaid I’m the greatest prima donna in Milan I’m an heiress who has always had her silk made By her own flock of silkworms in Japan!
I’m a girl men go mad for, love’s a game I can play With a cool and confident kind of air Just as long as I stay In my own little corner All alone In my own Little chair I can be whatever I want to be
I’m a thief in Calcutta I’m a queen in Peru I’m a mermaid dancing upon the sea I’m a huntress on an African safari (It’s a dangerous type of sport and yet it’s fun) In the night I sally forth to seek my quarry And I find I forgot to bring my gun! I am lost in the jungle All alone and unarmed When I meet a lioness in her lair! Then I’m glad to be back In my own little corner All alone In my own Little chair continued on page 25

Nature’s Embrace Intermediate III class The Intermediate class composed this piece from the beginning. The only parameter was that it needed to utilize the Pentatonic scale (5 different notes). The feeling they wanted to impart in this song is one of being embraced by nature, through the ethereal sound of the voices themselves, the lyrics, and the instrumentation. Hear the wind, it whispers Feel the breeze, it’s moving you Listen to the ocean Nature’s embrace

You’ll Never Walk Alone
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of a storm There's a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown
26 Children’s Chorus of Maryland
Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
Into the Woods: A Suite of Highlights
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Into the Woods
I wish, more than anything, more than life, more than jewels, more than the moon, more than riches I want a child, please I wish we might have a child/ (Jack to his cow: I wish you’d give us some milk or even cheese), I wish Into the woods, it’s time to go, it may be all in vain, you know Into the woods, but even so, I have to take the journey Into the woods, the path is straight, I know it well, but who can tell? Into the woods to lift the spell, Into the woods to visit mother Into the woods to Grandmother’s house, The way is clear, the light is good, I have no fear nor no one should The woods are just trees, the trees are just wood. No need to be afraid there, There’s something in the glade there! Into the woods without delay, but careful not to lose the way Into the woods who knows what may be lurking on the journey? Into the woods to get the thing that makes it worth the journeying Into the woods to see the King, to sell the cow, to make the potion To see, to sell, to get, to bring, to make, to lift, to go Into the woods, to go to the festival! Into the woods, then out of the woods and home before dark! I Know Things Now
Mother said, “straight ahead!” not to delay or be misled. I should have heeded her advice, but he seemed so nice. And he showed me things, many beautiful things, that I hadn’t thought to explore They were off my path, so I never had dared. I had been so careful, I never had cared And he made me feel excited—well, excited and scared. continued on page 29

And I know things now, many valuable things That I hadn’t known before; Do not put your faith in a cape and a hood They will not protect you the way that they should And take extra care with strangers, Even flowers have their dangers, And though scary is exciting, Nice is different than good. Now I know; Don’t be scared. Granny was right, just be prepared Isn’t it nice to know a lot! And a little bit not. Giants in the Sky
There are giants in the sky There are big, tall, terrible giants in the sky When you're way up high And you look below At the world you've left And the things you know Little more than a glance Is enough to show You just how small you are
When you're way up high And you're on your own In a world like none That you've ever known Where the sky is lead And the earth is stone You're free, to do Whatever pleases you Exploring things you'd never dare
'Cause you don't care When suddenly there's A big, tall, terrible giant at the door A giant? A big, tall, terrible lady giant sweepin' the floor And you think of all of the things you’ve seen And you wish that you could live in between And you’re back again, only different than before, continued on page 30

After the sky There are giants in the sky There are big tall terrible awesome scary Wonderful giants, in the sky! No One is Alone
Mother cannot guide you Now you’re on your own. Only me beside you, Still, you’re not alone No one is alone, truly Sometimes people leave you, Halfway through the wood. Others may deceive you, You decide what’s good. You decide alone, But no one is alone. I wish…I know Children Will Listen
How do you say to your child in the night Nothing is all black but then nothing is all white? How do you say it will all be alright When you know that it mightn't be true? What do you do? Careful the things you say Children will listen Careful the things you do Children will see And learn Children may not obey But children will listen Children will look to you For which way to turn To learn what to be
Someone is on your side, our side Someone else is not. While we’re seeing our side, Maybe we forgot They are not alone
No one is alone. Hard to see the light now, just don’t let it go Things will come out right now. We can make it so Someone is on your side, no one is alone.
Careful before you say "Listen to me" Children will listen
Careful the wish you make Wishes are children Careful the path they take Wishes come true Not free Careful the spell you cast Not just on children Sometimes the spell may last Past what you can see And turn against you Careful the tale you tell That is the spell Children will listen…

On the Steps of the Palace
He's a very smart Prince, He's a Prince who prepares. Knowing this time I'd run from him, He spread pitch on the stairs. I was caught unawares. And I thought: well, he caresThis is more than just malice. Better stop and take stock While you're standing here stuck On the steps of the palace. You think, what do you want? You think, make a decision. Why not stay and be caught? You think, well, it's a thought, What would be his response? But then what if he knew Who you were when you know That you're not what he thinks That he wants?
And then what if you are? What a Prince would envision? Although how can you know Who you are till you know What you want, which you don't? So then which do you pick: Where you're safe, out of sight, And yourself, but where everything's wrong? Or where everything's right And you know that you'll never belong? And whichever you pick, Do it quick, 'Cause you're starting to stick To the steps of the palace.
It's your first big decision, The choice isn't easy to make. To arrive at a ball continued on page 33
Of Stage and Screen Spring Concert 2019
Is exciting and all— Once you're there, though, it's scary. And it's fun to deceive When you know you can leave, But you have to be wary. There's a lot that's at stake, But you've stalled long enough, 'Cause you're still standing stuck In the stuff on the steps... Better run along home And avoid the collision. Even though they don't care, You'll be better off there Where there's nothing to choose, So there's nothing to lose. So you pry up your shoes. Then from out of the blue, And without any guide, You know what your decision is, Which is not to decide. You'll just leave him a clue: For example, a shoe. And then see what he'll do.
Now it's he and not you Who is stuck with a shoe, In a stew, in the goo, And you've learned something, too, Something you never knew, On the steps of the palace. Into the Woods (reprise) Into the woods you go again, You have to every now and then. Into the woods, no telling when, Be ready for the journey. Into the woods, each time you go There’s more to learn of what you know. Into the woods, then out of the woods… And happy ever after!…I wish…

O Dry the Glistening Tear! Oh dry that glistening tear that dews that martial cheek, thy loving children hear, in them thy comfort seek. With sympathetic care their arms around thee creep. For oh they cannot bear to see their father weep.
Dear father, why leave your bed, at this untimely hour, when happy daylight is dead and darksome dangers lower. See heaven has lit her lamp the midnight hour is past. And chilly night air is damp. The dew is falling fast! Dear Father why leave your bed when happy daylight is dead. Oh dry that glistening tear that dews that martial cheek, thy loving children hear, in them thy comfort seek. With sympathetic care their arms around thee creep. For oh they cannot bear to see their father weep!

Hence so great a Sacrament Let us venerate with heads bowed And let the old practice Give way to the new rite; Let faith provide a supplement For the failure of the senses. Kuskil peab alguskokkukõla olema, kuskil suures looduses, varjul. On tema vägevas laotuses, Täheringide kauguses, on tema päikese sära sees, lillekeses, metsakohinas, emakõne südamemuusikas või silmavees – kuskil peab surematus olema, kuskil alguskokkukõla leitama: kust oleks muidu inimese rinda saanud ta – muusika?
34 Children’s Chorus of Maryland
Translation 1: Somewhere the original harmony must exist, hidden somewhere in the vast wilds. In Earth’s mighty firmament, in the far reaches of swirling galaxies, in sunshine, in a little flower, in the song of a forest, in the music of a mother’s voice, or in teardrops – somewhere, immortality endures, and the original harmony will be found. How else could it have formed in human hearts – music?
Translation 2: It must be somewhere, the original harmony, somewhere in great nature, hidden. Is it in the furious infinite, in distant stars’ orbits, is it in the sun’s scorn, in a tiny flower, in treegossip, in heartmusic’s mothersong or in tears? It must be somewhere, immortality, somewhere the original harmony must be found: how else could it infuse the human soul, that music?
Everybody Says Don’t
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Everybody says don't Everybody says don't Everybody says don't, it isn't right Don't, it isn't nice Everybody says don't Everybody says don't Everybody says don't walk on the grass Don't disturb the peace Don't skate on the ice
Well I say do, I say, walk on the grass it was meant to feel I say sail, tilt to the windmill And if you fail you fail!
Everybody says don't Everybody says don't Everybody says don't get out of line When they say that then lady that's a sign Nine times out of ten, lady you are doing just fine. Make just a ripple, come on be brave This time a ripple, next time a wave Sometimes you have to start small, Climbing the tiniest wall Maybe you're going to fall But it is better than not starting at all. continued on page 37

Home
Lyrics by Charlie Smalls
When I think of home I think of a place where there's love overflowing I wish I was home I wish I was back there with the things I’ve been knowing Wind that makes the tall grass bend into leaning Suddenly the raindrops that fall have a meaning Sprinklin' the scene, makes it all clear Maybe there's a chance for me to go back there Now that I have some direction It would sure be nice to be back home Where there's love and affection And just maybe I can convince time to slow up Giving me enough time in my life to grow up Time be my friend, let me start again Suddenly my world has changed its face But I still know where I'm going I have had my mind spun around in space And yet I've watched it growing Living here, in this brand new world Might be a fantasy But it taught me to love So it's real, real, real to me And I've learned That we must look inside our hearts To find a world full of love continued on page 39

For Good
Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
I've heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason Bringing something we must learn And we are led to those who help us most to grow If we let them And we help them in return Well, I don't know if I believe that's true But I know I'm who I am today because I knew you... Like a comet pulled from orbit as it passes a sun Like a stream that meets a boulder halfway through the wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better? But because I knew you, I have been changed for good. It well may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime So let me say before we part So much of me is made of what I learned from you You'll be with me like a handprint on my heart And now whatever way our stories end I know you have re-written mine by being my friend... Like a ship blown from its mooring by a wind off the sea Like a seed dropped by a skybird in a distant wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better? But because I knew you, I have been changed for good. Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? I do believe I have been changed for the better And because I knew you...I have been changed for good.

Reflections FROM THE CLASS OF 2019 CCM has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—now finishing my 10th year, I can certainly say that I’ve grown with music ingrained in me. Ever since I started CCM, it’s been an amazing journey. I’ve made memories with friends I’ll never forget, and with teachers who have taught me lessons that I will carry throughout my lifetime. CCM has given me a new appreciation for achieving the most satisfying harmonies—not only in songs, but in my life, too. Having this commitment is no small feat. I have given the last 10 years of my life to this program, and in return it has given me a passion for music and everything about it—from singing with others and finding our perfect blend, to learning new things in theory class. This program has shaped me into everything I am today—CCM will forever live in my heart as the foundation to my love of music, and I can’t thank them enough. Without music, I don’t know who I’d be. —Madison Côté
I have been at CCM for ten years and these ten years have taught me so much about music, myself and others. I came to CCM when I was 5 and I just fell in love. I met friends and got to sing twice a week. As I got older I just added to my musical vocab and understanding. I am not gonna lie there were times when I didn't want to miss a sleepover or miss a party for CCM but when I heard those satisfying four-part harmonies or the dissonance between a minor 2nd I completely forgot about the sleepovers and parties. I can truly say that CCM has changed me for the better (as sung in the solfa 4 song). I have become such close friends with people in concert choir and also the people who are in lyric or even treble. I love seeing the little Crickets and I think to myself wow they have no idea how blessed they are to be in CCM. I will remember every concert, conductor, friend, melody, theory, challenge and reward CCM has showed me. I can truly say through CCM I have been changed for the better. I want to thank every conductor and teacher that has ever taught me at CCM. You have showed me so much about myself. You have expanded my mind and my heart and I will always be grateful for all you have taught me. —La’Mya Flowers CCM gave me a good understanding of what music can do when it’s been honed and perfected within time. Throughout the years it’s made me imagine that music can be so much bigger than all of us. I have been with CCM since 2010. Throughout that period of time I have worked to develop my skills reading, writing, and understanding how music fits together through the education process of CCM. My solo

song, titled “Almost There,” represents how I’m moving on through one section of my life and almost reaching the end to move onto another, but CCM is one part of my life that I will never forget. —Edwin Harmon
Being with a group of people who all share a love for the same thing is very valuable and hard to find. In my younger years, I was never able to fully appreciate this. Now that I have completed my final year, I have come to learn that not everyone can experience the feeling you get when you’re singing with your friends, and all of your energy is going to creating an amazing sound. I am so glad I have been lucky enough to have this. I am so grateful that I’ve found my people and have been able to sing with them for the past nine years. Although I am done here, I know I will always have a place to go back to and sing alongside people who have helped me find out how to truly make music. —Sophia Kessenich
I joined the Children’s Chorus of Maryland six years ago not knowing that I was opening a door to a part of myself that I had only just started to discover. Looking back now, I can’t see myself without this community in my life. The musical education I got from CCM has been a journey worth every minute of every rehearsal and every class, not to mention all of the amazing people that I shared it with. Through the program I had the opportunity to enjoy not just singing, but also learning. The music theory aspect of the program built on my experience as a musician and allowed me to find something that I truly enjoyed learning about. CCM isn’t just about singing. It’s about going deeper into the music, finding meaning in it, knowing what goes into it, and being a part of a musical experience alongside people who care about the music they’re creating, and who care about each other. —Charlotte Zang
